It is not a bakery. It is a wanna be Panera. The place had a lot of dirty tables. The mac and cheese was lacking the essential cheese part. So this is the second time eating here and I found it the second time the same way I did the first.... by looking for some place else! Lol only difference is I forgot the name of the place and I took a long shot and had hoped that I'd find this place again! That being said let's get started on review yaaay! Setting: the place is nice and cozy, super clean, and great for family, groups, or just you and yourself for lunch. There was plenty of seating if you had time to sit and eat and if you like to people watch while doing so, the bar seat area is right at the window . Staff: there was an absolutely gorgeous woman there who was pretty patient with us when we were ordering, so kind, and the kids absolutely adored her! Food: the food is filling, last time I had a salad and sandwich my best friend who was with me had a salad, I had a sandwich along with the kids. I highly recommend getting desperate condiments as they don't provide enough, or none of if it's not stated in the food description which I don't have a problem with. We went to this well known chain to get a meal on a Sunday afternoon and it was a big disappointment. The food took a long time to be served while the restaurant wasn't busy. I've been coming here for years, but since the remodel, this place has gone downhill. The good employees must have went somewhere else while the cafe was closed. I ordered via the app for a to-go order on 10/7/19. I paid extra for the prime rib sandwich. I brought my order back to my office, and there was NO MEAT in the sandwich (see picture). I reached out via the Corner Bakery'a contact is page and FB messenger with no response. A phone call got no answer. It's been a week with no response. I just finished up with an early morning meeting here, and this is a pretty decent spot for catching up with someone, whether over work or just dishing with an old friend. Note that this Corner Bakery Cafe is located -inside- the National Press Building on the ground floor. I missed the signage, coming into the National Press Building from F Street, but it's right on the corner of F and 14th. I only figured out where it was from one of the directories inside the building. I imagine that this spot gets packed during the lunch hours, but somewhere between 0900 and 1100 the patronage is pretty sparse, and there's ample seating to go around. A small number of power outlets dot the walls, so bringing a laptop and getting work done during the off hours is quite feasible. I'm completely hopped up on the coffee, even if the mild was -amazingly- mild. As in, it almost didn't taste like coffee. Virtually the only indication that it's coffee is the fact that I can feel the caffeine jacking my system up. Whee, coffee high! read more

In almost three years, the terrible service here has not improved at all. I try to avoid this Corner Bakery location whenever necessary, but I've been dragged in by friends and colleagues. Regardless of the time of day, whether there's only 3 customers or 30, the service is consistently terrible. My most recent visit was one day this week when my boss suggested we get lunch here before heading to a meeting next door. We had almost 40 minutes to order and eat before our meeting. I ordered the chili because I knew (thought) it was going to be fast. First, my boss' sandwich and soup came out, but they got his order sandwich wrong. Then, they brought him the correct order but with no utensils. After 15 minutes, they finally brought my food, but it was also the wrong order! I immediately asked to speak to a manager who promptly gave us refunds. I hope more customers demand the same for their poor experiences. Perhaps the corporate office will take notice. read more

Whenever I go in there are lots of staff members milling around yet the coffee area is a disaster. Nobody seems to want to serve customers in an elegant or efficient way. Soups, salads, sandwiches, baked goods - all at a reasonable price. My co-worker and I both had a hard time deciding what to order - and a harder time not snatching up one of their pre-made cakes for sale. Step up to the counter and place your order. If you're dining in, take a seat and stick your number in the little placard holder. They'll bring the order to you. Otherwise, shove yourself into the crowd waiting for their to-go order. We ordered the ham sandwich on pretzel bread and a spinach salad. My co-worker was very happy with the salad. It was nice and bright green and everything was nice and fresh and a nice size. My sandwich was great, but a little smaller than I had pictured it. That said, it was a good size for a lunch - enough to sate my hunger without overstuffing me. Still loving the breakfast! They have some grilled panini sandwiches, one of which is the Anaheim Panini. It's a scramble of bacon, avocado, tomatoes, green onions, and cheddar on grilled slices of sourdough bread. You can also get those ingredients as a scramble plate with potatoes and toast, the Anaheim Scramble. My favorite is still the Commuter Croissant but this Panini is a close second! Usually not too crowded around 9 AM on a weekday, but it's not as fast (or as cheap) as Mickey D's, but that's probably why you didn't go there in the first place. At the $5 mark these breakfast sandwiches are great quality but probably not an everyday breakfast if you're on a budget. I was visiting D.C. on a Sunday (my mistake), and the restaurants along 14th St were all closed. Corner Bakery Cafe was the only place open in the evening and starved as we were- my boyfriend and I ventured inside. The waits to order and for our food were moderate and we saw that there seemed to be only one or two people working in the kitchen. The man that brought us our food, however, was extremely jovial and definitely made up for the wait. We both got the half-sandwich/soup combos. Mine was a chicken pesto sandwich and broccoli cheddar soup. The soup was creamy with visible chunks of broccoli- just the way I like it. The sandwich, however, was mediocre. The pesto was not flavorful enough and was also very sparsely spread. My boyfriend's spicy Thai coconut soup was phenomenal! It hit all the right notes of spicy and sweet and savory. We also got pumpkin cookies, which were baked to perfection- soft and chewy and sweet. Tourists and families kept trickling in well past the advertised closing time and it was clear that the kitchen and staff would not be able to respond to them all and cook everything in a timely fashion. read more

I should have turned away when I saw the pair of teenagers making out in one of the front tables. But no, I was famished and needed just a little something, and besides, I've been to other Corner Bakery Cafes and have been a fan. This one isn't as good as others. By about 2 pm, there were pretty slim pickings when it came to the baked goods. Maybe I hit it on an off day...? Staff is slow. Food was a disappointment. Their cheesecake brownie (I know, I know, so much for New Year's resolutions!) was calling my name so I ordered one. It looked so nice and inviting there in the glass display case - a decadent brownie with swirls of creamy cheesecake ribbons throughout. Well, what I got looked (and tasted) pretty awful (edible, yes, but nowhere near the quality I expected). My "cheesecake brownie" was cold - like someone had taken it out of a freezer a few minutes before - and was comprised of three layers smushed together. On the top and bottom, chocolate Texas-sheet-cake style cake, and in the middle, "cheesecake" that had none of the zing or zest that I would expect. Super slow service, order wrong, cashier confused, etc. I called to place our order and were placed on hold for over ten minutes. I hung up and called again. The phone rang for about 4-5 minutes and no one picked up. We wanted to call because we had a special order (changes to the menu item). So we placed our orders online and walked over. Once inside, the place was practically empty and there was no line. I told Vanessa, the cashier, about the pick ups and that something wanted to be added to one of the orders. I told her three times and she was still confused. One of the orders had a dessert with the order. Prior receiving the to-go bags, I asked if the cake was inside. Vanessa said yes. There was no cake inside. She seemed confused again and asked what the issue was, taking the bag. I asked for the cake and she pointed to some cakes saying those were for lunch. It shouldn't matter, we paid for it, put it in the bag. Now there was a line forming behind me so she told me she would take the guy behind me. She took his order and two more people's order and I interjected politely asking for the cake again. She finally went to get the icing to put on the cake abd came back. She handed me the cake but forgot to give me the bag. I had to ask for and eventually point to the bag for her to understand. Smh. There was another woman working the bakery but she wouldn't take orders even though she saw that the line was long. I give the restaurant 1 star for cleanliness. Leftover food, plates, and cups were sitting on several tables. One table even had the basket that's used for clearing tables still sitting on the table. Food was on the floor. It was just gross. Why can't they just do what Panera does and have trash cans and a place for people to put their dishes? The food was just meh...I ordered a ham sandwich and Caesar salad. The sandwich didn't have any lettuce on it and was just dry! I opened it up and saw that the Swiss cheese was dried out like it has been sitting out a while. The lettuce in my salad was super wilted and turning brown. My daughter couldn't even eat the Mac n cheese because it had a weird after taste. The sausage looked kinda funny but tasted okay. They always get my order right and the staff is super friendly. Only place I can get honey & lemons for my tea.
