Indian food begs the question: "Should I pay $11 and eat all I can or should I pay $11 and get high quality Indian fare that can fill me up anyway?" I generally err on the former. Why NOT get 10 more plates than you would get if ordering the price of one. I digress, as I came for dinner here--no buffet. There are a couple of characteristics of an eatery that will not make it, assuming you are setting up shop near a highway: located between two exits that can easily be overlooked, a sign that does not reach over the highway walls, and just pure poor location. Other than the terrible point that this eatery sits in proximity to--no wonder the Estancia closed!--one of the most confusing intersections in Austin, the quality here does indeed fit the "nicer" scene, what with higher pricing (roughly $25 a head) and the "business casual" advertised via Royal India's OpenTable account. I have wasted far too much time talking logistics. The Aloo paratha had a raw flour taste, but this was overlooked by the ability to order fresh papadam, which was very cracker-like. The saag sauce here sits like a ton of bricks, as the small order (though $15) can satisfy even the heftiest eaters. Western palates are not used to such rich fats--see coconut milk--though we do eat much more processed ones. We got ours with lamb, and the cooks do a number to make this meat extremely tender. Unfortunately, our additions to the meal proved to be a waste of money. The raita offered an overly runny texture, and the pickles absolutely absorbed every drop of water from or mouths. I cannot quite gauge how Royal India compares to other eateries, but in my ignorance, I say... "isn't all Indian food the same?" Oh, they cook up some mean rice here, nice and fluffy, neither overcooked or gummy. read more

It was my first visit to this place, and to my disappointment its was a total flop. I went for a Sunday buffet and the restaurant was almost empty(Now i understand why). The food was pathetic, everything was cold with no taste. Being an Indian I can very well say its really important to keep up with the food taste/standards, as in past couple of years Austin has emerged with lots of Indian restaurant's. Service was mediocre. There was nothing I could really eat. The samosa's were over fried(totally burnt). They had dahi-wada in their buffet but the wada's were missing. I requested couple of times if i could get/or they could refile the same. But nor the food was ever refilled nor did some one came and informed me. I had asked for dosa, which actually came when we were about to leave(like after 30 mins when there was hardly anyone in the restaurant). Its OK if a restaurant is out of food, but they should at least come and inform their customer if they had requested. There was hardly anyone to pick up the plates either. It's really annoying to hear the kitchen staff yelling and shouting almost all the time I was there. Felt it was a total waste of my money. read more

We have been driving by Royal India for several weeks now, saying, "Let's try this place." So tonight was the night and when we walked in, we were greeted by a very nice Indian host. The restaurant was 98% empty, other than two booths. As we sat down at the table I noticed the plethora of chaffing dishes against the wall used for their lunch buffet. I told my husband that this place must be packed as a lunch spot. We decided to try the chef's recommendation's for two. That way we would get to sample a little bit of everything. The waitress brought us Poppadom immediately. I don't know what it's called, but I love the Brown, sweet-and-sour sauce that usually accompanies that bread. Their version is redder in color and is pretty watered down-no taste. We ordered everything pretty mild and the little. Dishes were brought to our table. I couldn't wait to try all these things as I really miss good Indian food like I used to eat back in the San Francisco Bay area. The samosa that came with the meal was pretty mediocre, and I asked for some raita to soften up the thick portion of the pastry at the bottom of the samosa. I LOVE raita, but theirs was very watered down and tasteless. Much goes for the same the rest of the meal. Nothing was outstanding, and nothing was horrible-except the service. The host never came back to check and see how we were doing and the two waitresses, i.e. bussers came to my table 3 times with the to-go box and I told her I am still eating my meal. My husband eats so fast and I eat slowly. She was really annoying; so finally, my husband packed up what was left, including half of my dinner plate, for my lunch tomorrow. As we were leaving, the host came by and asked how things were. I explained to him what happened and said, "I am now going home to eat the dinner that is in the to-go box". He said, "I am very sorry about that but they don't speak English that well". When I got in the car, I read their front door. Which said," lunch buffet, all you can eat". I can see why so many reviewers commented about the lunch buffet. It's not about eating something great and having good or great service, it's about getting value for the buck in a hurry. That is probably the best way to go if you decide to try Royal India. If you go for dinner, don't expect service. Personally, I will never go back there again. There are too many other eateries around town, which taste a lot better and appreciate our hard earned dollars. read more

Just woohoo, this review is for their weekday lunch buffet, and it was as good as it gets (just like the 5 star rating states). Quite a variety of veggie and meat options presented beautifully on their buffet. They had most of the usual suspects (chicken tikka masala, saag paneer, naan, aloo gobi, daal, chicken biryani, chicken tandoori, samosas, etc.). What I was impressed with was the sheer variety of options and the overall quality of the food and pleasant presentation. I have eaten at nearly every Indian buffet in town, and this is probably my new favorite. And $9.99 is an absolute steal for lunch here. Also, don't pass up their iced tea, it was truly superb and had a nice hint of cinnamon or something that made me ask for a to go cup, which I never do normally do. Just go there if you like Indian food, buffets, or better yet both. read more

You know that wonderfully satisfying feeling you get after you've (over)indulged in a really fabulous Indian buffet? That blissful high you get after having experienced the creams and sauces and spices and seasonings, the tender morsels of yum with a soft side of perfectly baked naan? Well, that's not what you will get here. On the plus side - you will not over eat. I'm sorry but it seems as if I went to a different Coriander Indian Cuisine at 4894 Hwy 290. How could there be so many 5 star reviews for the place I just left 20 of my hard earned dollars? Was it because it was close to the end of the buffet time? My daughter is the opposite of picky. In fact, as long as something isn't spoiled and is passable for food, she's good with it. By the end of the meal even SHE was saying, "Okay mom, let's just stick with the Indian food places we know, um-kay?" The best items we tried were the saag and the samosa. Those were good. The chicken wings were flabby and sour tasting, the beef meatballs tasted frozen and had a weird texture, the butter chicken was sliced suspiciously too uniformly and was overcooked to the point that, even though it was submerged in a sauce, it was still dry. The aloo gobi was so mushy that you couldn't tell the difference between the potato and the cauliflower. The naan was stacked so tightly that it was moist and had the flavor of the inside of the metal warmer. The rice. How could the rice be bad? The rice was wet. How is that? Was it because it was stored in that metal warming container? So sorry. I love Indian food but this was just all around bad. read more

We had a really bad experience. I seriously doubt the restaurants hygiene and the importance they give to it. I found a strand of hair in the food and when I asked to get me some fresh replacement, I was told that the hair did not belong to anyone in the kitchen and it must be from customer and the staff refused to get me a replacement. This is the most ridiculous explanation someone can give you. They did not paid enough attention to the customers, they were not refilling the buffet and people were scrapping the food from the containers. Although most of the dishes did taste good, such attitude is probably the reason for the little attention they are getting. I WILL STRONGLY RECOMMEND AVOIDING THIS PLACE. read more

I was very excited to try this place, I love Indian Food. and I'm visiting here from California so I know good Indian Food, but after going to Coriander I'm bummed to say, I can not recommended this place at all. Did the Lunch Buffet, food was COLD!!! The burners under the food either were Not working or Not on. The Saag Paneer was way off, had a nasty kick to it, After 3 trips up yo the food line they finally brought out the Naan. I sampled just about everything they had, the only thing Hot was the Tan Dori Chicken, only cause they had just brought it out. I won't get graphic, but I got sick cause the food was not set at a proper Heating Temperature. I won't ever go back. 1 Star just cause the Service was good! read more

Went with a friend last night who had a Groupon. Royal India is a nice Indian food option in South Austin. There is plenty of parking in the parking lot and once inside the decor is really beautiful with plenty of seating. During the day they are known for their lunch buffet but at night you have to menu order as there is no dinner buffet. All of the meat on their menu is halal meat. Most dishes are chicken, lamb or shrimp. The rosemary naan bread was fantastic. Dishes with meat will be between $10-$20 so on the more expensive side but great quality and taste. The owner is usually there and comes around checking on the patrons which is nice. They have a nice full bar if you want to sit and drink. Only complaint was that they were skimpy on the rice that came with the curry dishes. It costs $2 extra to get more rice. Regardless if I want hassle-free, tasty Indian food I would come back. Portions were big enough for me to take extra home. read more

Hands down my favorite Indian restaurant in Austin! Even Husbae loves it! I love Curry Leaf as well, but because this restaurant isn't exclusively Vegetarian, I feel that Royal India has richer, deeper, more American-palette suited flavors. This doesn't mean Americanized, by any means, it just means that there are more great flavors for us to latch on to, in addition to the fantastic Indian spices! I've been for, both, the lunch buffet, and order-in/take-out. Delicious! **Lunch Buffet: 10/10!** Great variety of Indian dishes, as well as the most delicious meatballs! They have some staples that stay the same every day on their buffet, and then they have things that change. You may not always get Butter Chicken, but something else that is equally delicious will be in its spot, such as Chicken Tikka Masala! Chicken biryani is always available, as is saag paneer, naan, aloo gobi, daal, chicken biryani, chicken tandoori, and samosas! They even have fantastic desserts. **Service: 10/10!** They've always been nice when I go, and they're the sort of servers that will bother you only they feel you need something or if something looks terribly wrong. The manager isn't checking on people, and they're not asking how you're doing every time you take a bite of food. It's fantastic! **Take Out: 10/10!** You can call in or place an order online for pick up! The food is always hot and has the same quality as if you would have eaten in the restaurant! read more

I ate at Royal India last night for the first time, and I have nothing but wonderful things to say about it! The food was delicious, the service was great, and I also really liked the atmosphere. I went with my old standby - Chicken Tikka Masala - and my fiancé ordered the Chicken Saag. Both were excellent! We ordered them both as number 3 spicy (on their scale of 1-5), and for someone who can handle a pretty good amount of spice, 3 was perfect. We also ordered a Samosa appetizer, which was also completely on point, and their Garlic Naan was out of this world. The service was definitely better than what I see other diners have experienced - it's clear they are working on it! We had a nice young fellow who immediately sat us and made sure we had water and silverware, then the manager came by and took our order. It's clear he is proud of his restaurant - he came by many times to check on us (without it being too much), and he even divined that we wanted more rice without us even asking! As for atmosphere, it's pretty nice. Cozy and intimate for being a rather large restaurant. And you can tell the lunch buffet must be really nice by the way that side of the restaurant was laid out. I'm definitely coming back for that! Overall, a great dining experience. read more

My review is exclusively for the buffet, so I can't comment on the food ordered off the menu. As far as the buffet is concerned: I really enjoy the food here. There is a constant supply of fresh naan, and all the other dishes are well seasoned and of a good temperature for a buffet. They're fairly busy during lunch, so stale food isn't a problem. One other thing I can't comment on is the authenticity of the dishes, but I really like the large variety and everything I've had compares very favorably with other Indian restaurants I've been to. read more

I'd actually like it to be a 4.5-star review. My parents and aunt and uncle ate there last night. The food was absolutely delicious. The garlic naan had a ton of garlic and was thin and crisp around the edges....as good as lasuni naan gets!!! My dad's vindaloo was very flavorful. Mom and aunt had korma which they loved but I didn't try. I ordered chicken tikka masala very spicy and that's what I got. All of the curries were rich and tasty. We ordered two saag paneers and an aloo gobi for the table. Best aloo gobi I've ever had and the saag paneer was as delicious as my other favorite restaurant, Asiana, and that's a big compliment. This is definitely the Indian restaurant to come to if you'd like nice ambiance, as well. It's lovely. The manager or owner, I'm not sure who he was, was very friendly and checked in on us. My only peeve(s) were: I kinda like typical Indian music and I realize music for a restaurant is very difficult to select, but I didn't like the "spa" music we listened to last night. It was distracting. I applaud them, however, for not picking classical, love songs, or "elevator" versions of pop ;) Also, I'm sorry to say that the service was certainly prompt but utterly lacking in personality or friendliness. Perhaps our waiter was painfully shy, but I could barely hear him standing right next to me. I was ordering a lot for our table and he suddenly darted away, mumbling something that I couldn't hear. It turns out his pen had run out of ink, but I had no idea why he suddenly bolted in the middle of my ordering bc I couldn't hear him. There was also a female runner or busser working and she wasn't super personable, either. The most disconcerting thing was catching each of them blatantly staring at me while I was talking. I'm not that hot and I'm not famous LOL. I wasn't being loud, either. So I don't know what that was about but I didn't like it. None of that is enough to deter me from going again and again. I imagine the buffet is fantastic and I will try it. read more

I really liked this place. I was going to order on Postmates but decided to get out of the house. I ordered the chicken biryani and the jalapeño & cheese naan. The biryani has a great flavor. My only complaint would be it had way more onion than I like. So next time I'll ask for no onion and extra raisins. (Also, not specific to this restaurant at all, but I wish you could choose dark or white meat because I think dark meat would be perfect in this dish.) The jalapeño & cheese naan was UH-MAZING!! I will go back there just for this. It had just the right amount of both ingredients and the naan was cooked perfectly. YUM! Will absolutely be visiting again. read more

I gave this place four stars because the food was excellent! The service not so up to par yet. Which is probably why I saw a ton of pick up to go orders on the bar. I felt a little confused by my server. He didn't seem to know what to do. I was also worried because at 7:30 pm or so we were the only people there besides one other table on a Friday night. It did pick up though. They also have a great Belly Dancer that was super nice. Seriously, she seemed to know more about what was going on than anyone there including who I assumed was the manager himself. I would like to come back and try the Buffet though at some point. So in all, I would say give it a try. Food is great! read more

This is my new favorite Indian Buffet. I like that it is south and they buffet is always fresh, the place is super clean, the service is great. They serve mimosas for .$50 cents on the weekend. They make this on the spot hot bread on a griddle in the serving room on the weekends - it is really good. the desserts here caught my attention first, the halwa was spot on, brought me back. they are kid friendly, as well, our kid made a bit of a mess and they couldn't have been more gracious. read more

I had never heard good things about this place but still thought of giving this place a try. We went there for the Saturday brunch. They were quick and courteous to get us seated. There were around 6-8 customers in there. The facility looked clean and well maintained. As we started trying out the food, thats when our dining experience started taking a steep downward dip. I tried every dish they had in buffet but apart from dahi wada there was nothing which I found appealing. Things like aalu baigan was bland and was missing basic spices, chicken in chicken tikka masala was rubbery which meant it was from an old batch, tandoori chicken was so red (because of food color) that it just threw me off, sambhar was awful. I then requested the dosa which was part of the buffet. They ended up giving it to the wrong table and ultimately they brought it to us but almost after 20-25 minutes after requesting, when we were done with our meal. My wife had also requested them TWICE to refill the dahi wada since it was empty but to our disappointment it never happened. We could also hear the kitchen people shouting n abusing when they were asked to make the dosa since earlier it got sent to a wrong table. Overall we were very disappointed with both food and service. They manager from his end tried to fix their wrongdoings but again clearly there wasn't much support from the kitchen staff and the argument n abusing went on! read more

DON'T COME HERE IF YOU WANT BAD FOOD! After eating at another Indian cuisine place for the past few months, my wife and I tried this place. This is absolutely hands down the best Indian food I have ever had. The chicken tikka marsala was full of flavor, the chicken was tender and the heat was just right. I got the "medium" amount of heat and it was enough to wake the senses, but not enough to overpower the flavor. The garlic naan was amazing. They use fresh garlic and a lot of it. Luckily for my wife and I we love garlic! So. Good. This place is a must try! We are definitely going to be regulars here and we can't wait to come to the $8.99 all you can eat lunch buffet. read more

I'm glad they kept the gorgeous interior. I used to visit this location back when Estancia was still here and always loved it. Now for the food... I opened my menu and I will admit, there was some "sticker shock," but this was a special occasion and I shrugged it off, hoping it was well worth it. Of course, it was! We got these chickpea-battered fried veggies that were absolutely amazing, delicious papadums with two sauces on the side and ordered some garlic naan for an appetizer. This naan... WOW! It was the size of a medium pizza and beautifully garnished and flavored. Definitely worth the $1.50 more than regular naan. The four of us couldn't even finish it. We sampled around each other's dishes which included butter chicken, lamb biryani and vindaloo (hot curry). Everything had incredible flavor, the portions may have appeared small but all of us took home full cartons of leftovers, it was -so- filling! Our service was great but the restaurant was sadly quiet, but that location has always had little crowds. Our drinks were constantly topped off and we never had to wave anybody down for anything. All in all, this was a very pleasant experience and I look forward to visiting again. read more

This review is tough. What happened to the lunch buffet??? I just walked into and shortly after away from a mess. The choices were limited, picked over, and cold. The salad bar had 3 inserts. It was only 12pm. This was beyond disappointing as I used to look forward to having lunch here. I have referred countless friends, but no more after today. The gentleman in charge couldn't refute or speak to/explain even one critiscism. I am accustomed to a much higher quality standard from Coriander. I guess it may have changed hands, I'm not sure. I walked out as did the table next to me. They should just shut down the lunch buffet rather than offer up such an awful experience.. read more

Horrible! Trash! Rip-off! This will be short and simple. Having tried them on numerous occasions, I give up, and I can state that they are a failure. This used to be a Brazilian steak house, now it's "Royal" India, and soon will be another venture, because this "Indian" restaurant won't last, either, and good riddens! Hopefully the next place at this address is a long overdue success. Note all the 1 star reviews, I concur. - Inconsistent. - Undercooked. - Inedible. - Overly spiced (as if they dumped a cup of Cayenne into the small dish). - They have recently cut their portion sizes in half. 8oz entrées for $14 is a rip-off. - Have to say it again, inconsistent! - Most recent experience: $50 for "food" down the drain, everything went in the trash where it belonged. Tip: Don't waste your money or time here, go elsewhere. read more

Let me start by saying Coriander used to be Royal India restaurant. I do not know if they had a change of ownership or just a change of business name. Regardless, the quality of food stayed the same, it is great!!! Everything on the buffet selections are simply delicious! They have the usual tikka masala, chicken curry, vegetable curry, saag paneer, tandoori, potato and peas, sautéed lamb, etc.. And the servers are always nice and friendly. Vegetarians could be happy here and a variety of chicken dishes. They also have a nice looking bar and wine selection, although I didn't get anything. Place looked nice too. Tv at the bar. As the saying goes. I only gave this place one star because I couldn't give it zero. My friends and I were looking for some food close by before our flight out of AUS Bergstrom, after some light searching this place was suggested. We ordered the biryani and butter chicken. Biryani first came out super spicy even for us. They took it back to the kitchen and calmed it down. It was chicken biryani and the chicken inside was like rubber you couldn't even chew it... The butter chicken was blan and the chicken inside it had a little better consistency than the biryani chicken however it was cut up like fajita meat. I'm no expert in Indian food, however I've had better Indian food cooked by white folks. I asked where the chef was from they said Punjab. Perhaps he is a good cook. Our food came out super fast ... I noticed we just missed the buffet cutoff. Had me thinking we got served what they didn't want to throw away. For the price, speed (always ready very quickly), location, service (everyone is very nice and helpful) & consistent quality, etc. this is the best Indian I have found in Austin, so far. We almost always do takeaway, but the twice I have eaten in the restaurant all of these held true. The restaurant was clean, well decorated & noise level pleasant (not awkward quiet, not too loud). Another plus - lots of easy parking. My boyfriend and I always get the Palak Paneer & Butter Chicken - both are excellent. We occasionally try other dishes, but these two remain our favorites. This is not a super high-end swanky Indian restaurant, but for what it does, it does exceptionally well. read more

Well, I guess it's now my Indian food restaurant of Note in Austin. It's not conveniently located near me, since I live in the center of town, but I'll definitely be making the trek back out there. We just had a couple of appetizers, chicken 65, the aloo tiki, and the kashmiri naan. All were delicious. I would say if you order the chicken 65, you should also get rice to place it on as it's somewhat oily. The flavor is outta sight. The atmosphere is very nice, the place is extremely neat and clean, the service is perfect, and they have a full bar as well. Highly recommended. read more

So my husband and I just finally experienced the wonderfulness of the buffet. OmG delicious! So for 10.99 you can choose from two different rices and about 7 main options. Three or four of them are vegan/vegetarian .. Which the other is goat and chicken. Also they had spinach pakoras and naan bread to pick from. Also had a cold small buffet with option.. which i never tried AND soup and something else? The service was good and they were as happy as one can expect at some Indian places (no racism there.. Just culture difference)...... I now love this place and have had three separate experiences here and can finally say.. Worth every dime! read more

I live near here and love Indian food but I always wondered why the parking lot was never full or even close to full. Even during meal times when it should be at least half full. I figured it was bad food. But with the reviews here I decided to try it with a friend. We went during the lunch buffet. I liked everyone of the vegetarian dishes. Dal, potatoes, saag, everything was excellent. The saag was a bit salty but I prefer it over salted than under--because you can always use naan to sop it up and even out the taste, right? They had a coconut chutney that you don't see in most Indian places that was really good--you could tell someone hand grated that coconut and that it was fresh. I wasn't as crazy about the meat dishes. The goat curry and the chicken tikka masala were both on the bland side and the tandoori chicken was slightly dry. But i have found this to be true in at a lot of Indian buffets--the vegetarian dishes are much better than the meat. The chicken biriyani was pretty good though. I love kheer but they didn't have that--instead they had mango pudding--very well done--and those cheesy balls in syrup (I can never remember the name). Both excellent. Service was good, my water was constantly filled and they were quick about getting rid of the plates we had finished. I hope that this restaurant thrives. Maybe they make their money from take out. There was a trickle of customers during the lunch hour but for the quality of this food, it's sad that there is not more. Just had a great meal at Coriander's. We've eaten there many times and the food is consistently good. The Saag chicken was delicious. Meaty chunks of chicken breast in a spicy creamy spinach sauce. The fresh naan is wonderful. I like the Kashmiri naan which is stuffed with a sweet filling. The garlic naan is great, too. The wait staff is very attentive. The preceding was written 8 months ago. We have eaten there a couple of times recently and the ownership seems to have changed hands. Or maybe I should say that the wait staff is not the same. The new people are not as attentive as the previous crew. The food, however, is every bit as good. read more

Staying at the Holiday Inn Express and was pleased to find this Indian restaurant right next door. I ordered some samosas, chicken korma, rice and naan through the Yelp app and it was all ready in about 15m, and walked down and picked it up and back to working while I ate. The food was hot and tasty, and price was reasonable for the amount of food, to the point where you sort of wish for smaller portions if only to try more items. The Gulub jamun dessert was maybe a tad sweet for my taste, but not sure what else I expected from something doused in honey. Only minor complaint if I had to come up with one..., I ordered the korma "spicy" and to be honest it wasn't, maybe opt for the "very spicy" option instead if you want a little heat. I would definitely order again for dinner, and probably will one more night while I'm here! read more
