I love this little art studio and can't wait to take more classes here! I participated in a Dutch Pour Class (offered through Artown) and had so much fun making a set of coasters. The class size was perfect for this activity, allowing for the teacher to adequately share instructions, demonstrate the process, and work one-on-one with students as needed. The instructions were organized on a print out with all the materials and supplies needed to replicate the activity at home and referenced during the instruction portion of the class. The materials for the class were well-maintained and organized at each place setting for each student. I've taken other art classes elsewhere and I felt like this was a step above with regard to organization, instruction, and take away materials. I loved the experience so much that I'm going to take another class in October, and this time I'm bringing a friend! In addition to the art classes and studio, Copper Cat also has a delightful little art/gift shop with items made from the artists in studio. Most are in the front shop, but some pieces are scattered throughout. Take your time looking at all the wonderful pieces... so many great art gems for sale at very affordable prices. Finally made it out to visit Copper Cat Studio! What a beautiful shop; so much larger than I ever expected. Spacious and well-lit classroom space. I'm not a mosaic or stained glass artist, but even to my eyes, the supply they carry looked amazing. Also local artists' works (including the owner Katie's) throughout; perfect for gift shopping. Yes, original art makes great gifts, while supporting a local woman-owned business! Everything is so tastefully, lovingly displayed. Just very lovely space. Hope you'll come visit. read more

Woohoo! Finally made it to a mosaic workshop and it was SO fantastic! Before I say more - go here right now for holiday shopping!! I didn't realize there were so many great items for sale here too - some Nevada themed, if you're looking for that - at super reasonable prices for beautiful/funny/unique artisan crafts. Copper Cat Studio is owned by Katie Packham and she taught the mosaic workshop I went to this weekend. It's 3 hours long for a small project (depending on size of substrate, or material you're building the mosaic on) or 5 hours for the big project option. So 10 am to either 1 or 3 pm. I thought that sounded like an eternity! and opted for the small project. Well, The first 45 minutes or so are instructions/an overall guide to how to create mosaics, including a super thorough written handout from Katie to refer to. The rest is creating the mosaic, and you go back on a later day to grout so the glue has time to dry. I ended up doing the larger project and the time FLEW by! Like, I can't even believe how fast it went by. There are tons of great materials to choose from to make your mosaic and I loved my finished mosaic! Well, I still need to grout it but then it will look even better. Katie was a fantastic instructor and walked around helping us as we worked - she was kind and helpful and had great insights and advice that made my mosaic better. I could write a book about how great Katie and this place are but let me just say - check out the website, peruse the (large!) offering of classes and workshops, and try something new - or just go there and SHOP! Copper Cat has been around for years. I first heard of her over a decade ago, she had a stand at a craft fair or farmers market where she sold her mosiac tile displays, of which I bought some gifts for myself and for my MIL. She was doing some small private classes teaching mosiac styles at that time. Fast forward a few years ago, after following on social media, saw she had moved to a new space off East McCarran, and had some expanded classes taught by other artist creators in the area. My sister saw a glass fusion yard art class and asked if I wanted to join, and I did. We spent a saturday late morning learning how to score and cut glass, and made ourselves some cute cats to put in our yards. We learned it's hard to mess up those things, because they really come out cute no matter the combination of glass you use. Additionally, Donna the instructor was patient, funny, and helpful for the smaller class size of I think around 8 to 10. The smaller class size helps so everyone gets attention when needed and you're not lost in. the crowd. My undiagnosed but definitely have ADHD personality means, I have interests in about a billion things, but only enough time to focus on one thing for shorts amounts of time. I have an entire room of crafting supplies, sewing macine, die cutters, paints, calligraphy, candle making, needlepoint, crocheting... I can keep going. But I have always wanted to try stained glass making, and saw thats a newer class offered at Copper Cat by local artists A Glass Fantasy! Signed up and went and thoroughly enjoyed myself. I think most artists are just creative people who are always encouraging, stained glass is obviously a talent that requires lots of practice, yet they make you feel like a pro. The mother daughter duo are enthusiastic, funny and great instructors. I'm signed up for another class, and thinking of another already. While at Copper Cat, I realized how much its grown and expanded in what it offers. Of course it has local artists goods for purchase, as well as, tons of craft supplies. Added even more class types from felting to resin pouring to quilting and more. AND offers yoga and reiki. The space is clean and organized considering it offers so many types of crafts. But walking in, you feel inspired by all the creativity and color everywhere. Seeing supplies and tools get me excited to create! We are so lucky to have this in Reno, be sure to check out the class schedule for offerings if you like trying new things, need refreshers on old hobbies, or just want help! I attended a silk scarf water marbling workshop and loved every moment. The studio has a comfortable and welcoming vibe and very inclusive to creative rookies (like me!). I love that their workshops are dotted on different days and that there is quite an assortment of workshops you can attend. Check out their website and see which workshop strikes your fancy! Some looked to be for an advanced learner but the owner is super responsive to emails and will tell you more about the level of difficulty. I look forward to attending more workshops soon! read more

Loved, loved, loved my Silk Painting Class here. It was an expensive class, so there was some hesitation about signing up - but it was the class my mom wanted to attend, so I sucked it up and forked up the money. Very happy I did! A couple days before class an email was sent with instructions e.g. lunch, arrival time - a planner such as myself always appreciates these touches. The class walked you through on silk painting from step 0 to steaming. Louise Noel the instructor was a very talented teacher and equally likable person. She patiently walked each person through each step, spent more time on a person if they asked for help, and made certain that we understood logic behind the basics of each step. She made the class more lively, by amusing stories. I loved how she also supplied each of us with walk away supplies and a typed list of where she got those supplies along with type instructions on the procedure. They have a small gift shop also, with some very nice gifts - where you can also see the results of different potential classes. My mom and I browsed through it during our lunch hour and got inspired to try more classes and I even purchased a lovely gift. Also, during lunch one of the other staff members gave us a quick tour of the location. Very friendly staff. Lastly, Copper Cat's online registration system makes signing up for a class super easy. This is the building with a big 300 in the front. It was bit tricky to find due to the signage only being on the door. My mother inlaw purchased a gift certificate from the owner Katie. via phone and the receipt plus certificate was available for printing and physically mailed to the recipient. From there you can go on their website and a call/email to reserve class. Once you get inside the instructor welcomes you and gives you a tour of the classroom, shop, resident studios and points out the yoga room. The yoga room would have been nice to walk into, but it was closed off. They owner teaches the yoga and offers tai chi in this room. We had our art instruction in the center of the place with high tables surrounded by materials. Our instructor Donna was the resident there, and she had her art showcased in the other private classroom. She was very informative about Copper Cat workshops and her upcoming events. We made junk heart necklaces, using "Diamond" glue and special wiring techniques..great for all levels of art experience. Donna explained small businesses to purchase art supplies and made sure everyone understood each step of the process. She is very supportive of your pieces and will give input to make your art setting easier. The class consisted of five people and we are encouraged to look at each other's projects which would further enhance inspiration to add to our own pieces. This is a good family activity and it is pretty therapeutic as suggested by the artist! read more

I've attended Mosaic 101, a leash holder mosaic class, and most recently I created a mosaic birdbath using a recycled roof satellite dish. The owner/operator, Katie Packham Weaver, is extremely helpful yet accommodating to students' preferences. She will help you if you want and need suggestions but is happy to let you go down your own path. The studio space is not intimidating and is nicely arranged with plenty of space to create. There are a wide range of offerings to suit everyone. The studio also has the cutest gift shop to pick up unique gifts or purchases, and regular featured artists' work in the gallery. This past Sunday I had the opportunity to take the Intuition & Creativity all day workshop at Copper Cat Studio in their new space! At first blush I thought a little yoga and a lot of mosaic. Sounds great! Well this is what happened.... The day started at 8AM with 45 minutes of gentle yoga at The Yoga Center. Then we walked over to Cooper Cat Studio (just across the parking lot). Denise Sheehan lead the group through the neuroscience of intuition & creativity and accessing intuition including tools to do that. We laughed, we cried and got in touch with our intuition. Breakfast and lunch was provide by Creme. Perfectly light yet hearty. Breakfast: Quiche & Brownies. Lunch: Butternut Squash Soup & Salad. YUM! I must check out Creme for breakfast/lunch soon! After lunch we had till 4PM to create a mosaic piece based on our experiences from earlier in the day. Katie Packham explained the basics of mosaics for first-timers and those (ok me) who needed a refresher. All materials (glue, bases, cutters, etc.) are included plus tesserae from Katie's personal collection - glass tile, metal tiles, rocks, glass gems, shells, marble, stone, ceramic tile, stained glass in every color of the rainbow. The workshop ended with a 1/2 hour+ of yoga back at The Yoga Center. The group said their good-byes and went on with their day. I'm not sure if I'll see them again but they were an amazing tribe of gals to spend a Sunday with. I can honestly say this workshop might not be for everyone but if you're on the fence about it. I say just do it. When you do the workshop it will be the right time for you with the right group. The Studio itself is great! Walking in its set up like a little gallery with works from local artists. The walls are lined with all kinds of tile. Some are included in the cost of classes/workshops and other are sold by sheet/1/2 sheet or piece. In the center of the space, there are work tables that can be configured to meet the group's needs. If you're not into the soul searching via mosaic they offer: Mosaic 101, Glass Fusion Jewelry 101, Large Garden Mosaic Workshops, Accent Table Workshop. I took a mosaic class here with a couple of friends yesterday and it was tons of fun. Although I am not at all confident about finishing the grouting part on my own, Katy was a great teacher and a lovely person. The materials were varied, plentiful, and interesting. Copper Cat has lots of different classes in many different medium so check out the website for a full class listing to find one or two for yourself. I plan to take some sort of glass class next and if the grouting goes OK, I would enjoy another mosaic as well. Katie Packham-Weaver is a great teacher of glass arts, in specific, mosaics, but she also teaches stained glass but is not limited to that. She has her Copper Cat Studio at 300 Kresge Lane in Sparks off McCarran. To get on her class list, which she sends out monthly, Phone: (775)453-0753 and the email is coppercatstudio.com. The studio is modern, neat. and has a calming vibe. Tables for schooling and artwork are around the middle of the studio. She also has guest artists who teach at her studio Sales of mosaic tiles and mosaic needs are all around the studio. She usually has smaller classes so she can pay attention to all her students who are in all stages of creation such as starting by cutting and gluing the art glass or tiles on to the substrate (wood, stone, or even satellite dishes). Then grouting soon to be finished pieces. This is my second class with her and I made a bird with blue, green, and yellow in the background. I thought I had ruined it but when she showed it to another student, I said, "wow, that's a nice one". Then realized it was mine! She's really careful about people getting cut and teaches us safety rules. Now I have to wait at least a day or maybe until next week. Because she wasn't familiar with glueing glass to a mirror. It may take a little more time to be ready for grouting. (Whatever she thinks). This the place to go to buy mosaics supplies as they don't have many mosaics supplies at Hobby Lobby or Michaels. She has moved to a larger studio on the other side of town at 300 Kresge Lane. Ample parking. Classes are reasonably priced. read more

I signed up for the Mosaic 101 class, not really knowing what I was getting myself into but wanting to get out of my comfort zone (I'm not typically a super artsy person). If you're like me, sign up for one of their classes! I had such a good time and left totally relaxed! Katie goes over all the basics and is there the whole time giving suggestions and making sure to answer any questions you have during the process. The studio is beautiful and well organized with tons of options for your art piece. The price for the class was fair (especially because all the supplies were included and the class I signed up for took 4 hours) and you leave with a custom work of art that you made yourself!
