Coop's Place was one of those unexpected gems you hope to stumble across while traveling. After asking our bartender at Lafitte's Blacksmith Bar where to find some great fried food, this was the recommendation and it absolutely delivered. Our bartender, Kattai, made the experience even better. She was funny, engaging, and genuinely welcoming, creating the kind of atmosphere that makes you want to stay awhile. Great service can elevate a meal, and she certainly did. ( I hope I got her name correct because she definitely deserves the recognition!) If you're looking for white tablecloth dining, this isn't it. Coop's has that dive bar charm, and that's exactly what makes it special. We ordered the catfish po' boy, and it was phenomenal, crispy, perfectly cooked, and packed with flavor. It wasn't just the best thing we ate at Coop's; it was arguably the best dish we had during our entire Fourth of July getaway to New Orleans. Sometimes the best meals aren't found in the fanciest restaurants, and Coop's Place is proof of that. We checked some reviews online, and even though there were some alarming negative ones, people usually said the food was decent so we gave it a try. The place is small and was about 70% full when we walked in. Right away, the person behind the bar was pretty rude to us. We also didn't know everyone needed an ID just to eat there. One person in our group had to go back to get theirs, and they made the rest of us wait outside even though we had ours ready. When he got back, the person checking IDs was super rude and kept complaining before walking away. She showed us a table and even backed up to make room, but when we went to sit down, she told us she hadn't let us sit yet. At one point, it felt like being rude was just part of the gimmick. We didn't even get water before we decided to just head to a different restaurant. It was a frustrating experience. We heard such great things about this place, we decided to try it out for dinner one night. It's not much to look at when you go inside, there's a bar and some tables. We were seated immediately and our server, Adam came right over to take our drink order. When he brought us our drinks, he took our food order. I ordered the breaded mushrooms as an app and my husband ordered the fried alligator. For entrees my husband ordered the Rabbit Jambalaya and I ordered the fried chicken. The food was amazing! Everything was definitely on point. The chicken was perfectly fried, had a great flavor and was moist and juicy. My husband thoroughly enjoyed his rabbit jambalaya. Love Coop's! There's lots of over priced mediocre food in the French Quarter but Coop's is different. It's always good New Orleans style food that's & affordable. With all the construction around this area of the French Quarter during Easter weekend it was kind of crazy to get to Coop's Place, but I'm glad we were able to try it. Classic dive vibes for sure, it was so dark inside but the food was solid. Etouffee was the best thing we had here and the shrimp was cooked perfectly. Gumbo had a great kick and was slightly thicker than Dooky Chase's so I personally enjoyed it more - the inclusion of okra was great. Red beans & rice was solid. The rest of the Coop's plate was not our favorite since the jamabalaya was more tomato-based than we usually like, the shrimp creole was also super tomato-y, and the chicken was kind of dry, but a fun spot to grab a bite in the Quarter! read more

I had dinner here a few days ago looking for some fried chicken and Coop's Place is known for theirs. It is a dive bar on Decatur Street that also serves food and was relatively near my hotel. I ordered the 3 pc. fried chicken dinner that comes with cole slaw and rabbit sausage jambalaya for $20. The food came out in about 5 minutes and the night I visited the place wasn't busy at all so I guess they already had my chicken made which isn't a good sign. However my fried chicken was actually very good tasting. They gave me a wing and two breasts so it was alot of chicken. The meat was juicy and flavorful and I enjoyed it (4). Coop's chicken reputation is justified. I liked the cole slaw as it was cool and creamy (3.5). The jambalaya was dry and I didn't finish it (2). I will give an overall score of a 4 but that jambalaya must be improved or perhaps you should ask for a different side dish. My absolute favorite spot in the French Quarter. Literally the first place I go everyone I am in Nee Orleans. Very authentic in every way. You will know you are in New Orleans the second you step inside. The bartenders and servers are always friendly and I have never had anything to eat here that wasn't great. A big thank you goes out to all my aviation friends on this recommendation. It was recommended last year as one of the must go tos but with the epic snow storm last year sadly they were closed. This restaurant appeared on a recent must visit list for flight crews so we knew we had to check it out. I will warn you this is not a fancy place by any means and is a dive but it has the best Southern Fried Chicken and Jambayla. If you want a truly authentic creole meal this is the place to go. In my experience, some if the most amazing food can be found at dives. The service here was amazing and the staff were warm and friendly. No tablecloths or linens just some amazing southern cooking with a side of that good ole southern hospitality. Prices were reasonable as well. Make sure you bring your license as it is a must have to get in with the establishment having a bar. But made me feel so good to be carded that was an extra plus for me... LOL !!!! read more

First time trying étouffée and this place did not disappoint! It was so flavorful and packed with shrimps and crawfish. It had a pleasant kick to it and was perfectly cooked. We also ordered the shrimp creole, which was different, but delicious nonetheless. This dish was also packed with tons of shrimp. We liked that it had a sundried tomato taste to it, which was refreshing while eating it alongside the étouffée. A small, divey restaurant close to the French Market with a lot of Creole food options at affordable prices. I had the rabbit and sausage jambalaya. It was my first time having rabbit, and it was pretty lean but tasty. My husband had the shrimp creole and it wasn't as flavorful as the jambalaya, but I think he still enjoyed it. A small cup of the jambalaya was still a pretty big portion and I got full from it. My husband and I always come to Coop's Place when we are in New Orleans. He brags that Coop's friend shrimp is the absolute best shrimp he has ever had in the entire world! I must agree. It is obviously fresh, breaded just right, and juicy and sweet when you bite into it! They do it right by removing the tails so that you can just pop them in your mouth. Coop's cocktail sauce has a respectable bite and the tartar is also exquisite with a fresh creamy taste. Coop's is always busy and the service is really fast and good. Coops is one of my very few go-to spots in the French Quarter. They serve the best fried chicken in the quarter and it is typically accompanied by rabbit jambalaya which is very good. It comes with coleslaw too but I'm not a coleslaw person. When I told them this they said that's because you never had good coleslaw. Maybe so! Still didn't eat it. This is actually the only "creole" jambalaya that I like (made with tomatoes). If you suffer from heartburn try a different side. Inside Coops is very small but there's probably 12-15 seats at the bar and tables to sit at and it can get busy during peak days. Pass on the gumbo they don't know what they're doing with gumbo no offense. They serve a variety of Abita beers which is cool too. Love Coop's, give them a try. read more

This place is one of the best joints for good ole Creole dishes in a little spot on Decatur. Definitely not hipster, just great service and food. Funky decor and rock make this a fun place for a good meal and a fair price. They actually make their jambalaya supreme with the usual ingredients (chicken, sausage) but also add rabbit, shrimp, crawdads and smoked Cajun ham called Tasso. Absolutely the best in town...in my humble opinion (after trying about 6 different versions in 5 days!!). Also had their fried oysters which came out well seasoned and perfectly fried.
