Cooper's Hawk (CH) is a new place in Surprise. From the outside, its appearance is rather nondescript: contemporary and, honestly, a bit cold. Step inside, however, and the first thing you notice is that you are standing in a wine tasting room, complete with tasting bar and wine store, with the stemware and myriad wine bottles arranged beautifully. Shelves of wine bottles and accessories adorn nearly every wall, and the tasting atmosphere is warm.
We had 4:45pm reservations on Thanksgiving, and the restaurant in fact was very busy, far busier than I had anticipated. Although we arrived about 10 minutes early, we did end up having to wait an extra 15 minutes beyond that (until about 5pm). We were finally escorted to a fairly private table in the back room, where we were immediately greeted by our server. While we perused the menus (standard, Thanksgiving, and wine), he shuffled off to fulfill our drink order and brought us some fresh pretzel-type of bread and freshly whipped butter that were fantastic.
Although CH is a chain restaurant that is corporate-owned, that in no way detracts from its culinary quality; both the food and the wines are exemplary. There are nice varieties of both, and nearly every food item, from the appetizers to the soups, pastas, entrées and desserts, has a recommended wine pairing.
I had visited the CH website beforehand and noticed that they also offered a separate menu with chef recommendations, of which none of the items were on the standard menu. I asked our server for and received that menu. We began our CH experience with a chef-recommended appetizer, a wild mushroom flatbread. It arrived on a serving board and was absolutely delicious. We then tried the crab / shrimp / lobster bisque. Although I have had better (in Massachusetts, a high bar), this bisque was better than most and quite flavorful. Because we find it hard to pass up a good risotto on the menu (CH offers *3* of them), we then shared a roasted chicken risotto that was savory and filling. For our entrées, my wife selected Dana's Parmesan-Crusted Chicken, which was moist, tender and flavorful, adorned with a small dish of Betty's Potatoes (shredded, au gratin-style), small basil-soaked tomatoes, and garlic green beans that were delightful. I selected the chef-recommended surf 'n turf: filet medallions with a winter truffle crust and blue crab-stuffed lobster tail, with lemon butter on the side. The filets were also very tender, the truffle crust phenomenal, the lobster tail delectable. Accoutrements included Mary's Potatoes (mashed with butter and cream) and roasted broccolini, both prepared to perfection. I also decided to go with a glass of the recommended pairing for the surf 'n turf: the house lux meritage, which was a great choice.
For dessert, we shared a slice of banoffee pie. I had never heard of it, thinking it was a CH creation. But apparently it is a thing, as it was at the top of searches in Washington, DC for Thanksgiving pie recipes (see https://www.realsimple.com/top-searched-thanksgiving-pies-by-state-google-trends-8402424). In any case, it was astonishingly good!
In addition to the slight wait for the table, the service was a tiny bit spotty; it did take a while between courses for our server to return. That said, we never felt rushed or that we were running out of beverages. We only ordered each next course after the previous one was delivered (or finished). One thing we hate is to have to order everything up front, only to have a new course arrive before we've barely started the previous one in an effort to turn the table as quickly as possible. We never felt pressured to do that here, and we thus appreciated the ability to take our time and enjoy the evening. Our server also checked with the kitchen a couple times to confirm that no food allergies would flare up and was otherwise attentive to our needs.
Our bill, including taxes and before tip: $175. On the surface, it might seem like a lot, but that included an appetizer, two cups of soup, risotto for two, two entrées, dessert and a glass of wine, nearly all top-notch. All things considered, we thus didn't consider the bill exorbitant. A full 3-course Thanksgiving dinner for about $35 was also an option (soup, full turkey dinner with all the trimmings, and dessert), very reasonable (and from the looks of it at the table next to us, well worth it).
There are few restaurants in Surprise of the caliber established by Cooper's Hawk Winery and Restaurant. It's a great addition to the area, and one which will most certainly see our continued patronage. read more
