Cook's Arts & Crafts is definitely a rare gem in a city that is churning out chain after chain of big-name-stores. It's a family owned and operated shop that is brimming with all kinds of arts and craft supplies. They cater to all skill levels here, and even offer some great classes for different crafts (they update their website frequently). They are located right on Myrtle, by the expressway and several bus lines. It's a great area and more convenient to get to than I expected, even though there's no direct train. So I learned how to knit a plain rectangle about 10 years ago and had long since given up on ever learning to make anything beyond that - I couldn't read patterns, couldn't keep my knitting straight, and didn't understand why there were so many kinds of needles (where do they all go!?). I met and spoke with the owner of Cook's Arts & Crafts, Michelle, a couple of times before I went for it and asked for a lesson (check their website, lessons are very reasonably priced!). She was so fantastic, and talking to her inspired me to pick up knitting again. She took note of my budget and skill, quite accurately I might add. She looked at what materials I already owned and advised me on how I could proceed with that, never pressuring me to buy anything I didn't actually need. Michelle was a spectacular teacher- she was patient and showed everything to me slowly (because obviously I'm a slow person). She was also encouraging. Walking away, I really regret not doing it sooner! I'm looking forward to joining their social knitting meetups at the shop and around Queens- I really wish that more of these mom & pop shops were still around because you really cannot put a price tag on such stellar customer service. read more

I have been riding past Cook's Arts & Crafts for over six years now almost everyday going to and from work but never had a chance to stop in. Finally after wondering around one of the craft mega-stores in the area I decided next time I needed anything I would check Cook's out first. Well Friday I needed a few new colors of some DMC floss for a new project I was starting (a 3D cross stitched Weighted Companion Cube from Portal) and stopped in. The place is totally awesome. It is a small store but jam packed with different crafting supplies, but in a way that still leave you with room to walk/browse. The woman working there was super friendly and helpful and was able to find me everything I was looking for in about two minutes. She also said if I needed anything they didn't have on hand she could order it for me. From now on Cook's will be my first stop for all my crafting needs. read more

I just returned home after taking my first (ever) knitting class with Michelle and felt compelled to write about what an amazing experience it was. I was scheduled for a 10a-12p beginner's knitting class, but I didn't leave until nearly 2p.m. Michelle was so astoundingly generous with her valuable time and so patient with this newbie, I hadn't even realized how late it was until her next client showed up. I came in to the class expecting to feel overwhelmed and unsure and left feeling really amazed by how much I learned today. I highly recommend taking a class with Michelle, she's knowledgeable, friendly and patient. Before I left, I also checked out the great selection of goodies the store offered and took home some beautiful coloring books and pencils. Michelle has a lovely assortment of wares for the creatively inclined. A Yelp search for local knitting classes brought me to Cook's Arts & Crafts, and I'm SO glad it did. First of all, $25 for 2.5 hours of one-on-one instruction AND materials that you get to keep?! Absolutely unheard of. Most other places that I researched were charging $50-75 for a 1-hour group class! Michelle was SO kind and patient- truly a wonderful teacher and she was really informative about local area meet-ups that she hosts for crafters (she teaches a myriad of crafts- not just knitting). I didn't stay long to browse the wares much, but at a quick glance, the store seemed well-stocked with crafting essentials. One thing I would definitely recommend is to call or email in advance to find the best way to get there. I took the L and J from Williamsburg and ended up in a sorta sketchy area of Queens with a far (and also confusing because of a highway and golf course in between) hike from the train, when I could have just taken a quick Q55 bus directly outside her shop. Since moving to Ridgewood I discovered the benefits of mom and pop stores. This being said I decided I wanted to take up crocheting. I have only attempted to learn through YouTube videos and had pathetically failed. Yelp brought me to Michelle's quaint little shop, a 10 min Q55 bus ride from my home. I got there, unsure of the day of my appointment. Of course I went on the wrong day. Luckily for me her 1pm appointment didn't show so she was able to see me. She explained the class was going to be one on one, and she just pulled up two chairs in front of her shop and we began. She had her very cute dog prancing about but when he seemed to be too distracting, let him sleep behind the register. I didn't mind the dog though...he was super cute!!! I tried crocheting first, but after having a hard time executing the first stitching and Michelle explaining it was the harder of the two, she let me switch over to knitting. That was really nice of her! I'm always so flip floppy with stuff like this! When we starting the knitting, she was very sweet and patient with me, letting me learn the basics on my own before moving on to the next thing. The beginner's class was 2 and a half hours (3 and half because of idle conversation and Michelle's patience!) with all materials included (yarn, sticks, helpful printouts) for about 25 bucks. She even lets you come back for free with any follow up questions. Who can beat that deal? In Cobble Hill they were trying to charge me 75 bucks and it wasn't even one on one! This is my new favorite craft store. I will not be shopping at the huge craft chains again since I've found this place. The owner and manager, Michelle is a gem. She's the nicest person you'll ever meet and answers all questions that you may have regarding whatever crafts you are working on or want to take up. What an amazing place! I purchased an offer for knitting/crochet class on Living Social and it was the best purchase ever. I bought classes for me and my Mom thinking we can do the class together. When we signed up, the owner, Michelle, was actually trying to only teach each of us individually, one-on-one. But Michelle graciously took us both at the same time and patiently taught us to crochet. My Mom knows a little more crocheting than I do, so we were at different levels, but Michelle still managed to give us each her time and guidance. After this wonderful experience, I will be going back to learning knitting. There is also so many hidden treasures in this shop as well. If you are looking for something but it's not available, Michelle will order it for you. I actually needed a birthday gift for my 2-year old niece, and Michelle recommended a puppy dog doll that you can color with washable markers. And it was the perfect gift because my niece wouldn't let go of it after she opened it up on her birthday. As the other reviewers stated, this place is one-of-a-kind and is a true mom & pop store that we should all support. While taking the class, the customers that came in were given such great assistance from Michelle and she makes sure everyone leaves happy and satisfied. I moved to Queens and some serious culture shock! This was my first time picking up a needle and I left knowing and feeling confident that I could knit my own ruffled scarf!
