M&J is one of those garment district institutions that's been around for nearly 90 years. They've always been one of the larger stores with a very broad assortment of sewing and design accessories--everything from hundreds of ribbons (may thousands), trims, decals, rhinestones, fabrics, supportive inner garment materials, buttons, hair/costume jewelry components, the list goes on. Agree with some other reviews in that it's one of the pricier stores though you pay for the wide variety--hard to beat their selection. The course of time hasn't been kind to local production. Back in the 1820s up until the early 1980s, when mass garment production stateside was booming in NYC, the garment district employed up to 46% of the city's industrial workforce. There was a need to design and purchase materials nearby, and the majority of Manhattan's midtown west side was dedicated to factories and design studios. Fast fwd to now, that statistic is much different and given the availability of online and global sources, not everyone needs to go into a physical store to purchase their needs. While many products have long moved to overseas sourcing, for anyone who's endeavored DIY arts and crafts, or even made any functional product by hand, it's much different seeing and feeling a material in person than on a screen. That's where in this past century, stores like M&J played a vital role in the fabric of the garment district. They are also a valuable resource to the numerous design students at FIT, Parsons, etc. During past decade many a longtime stalwart trim store have disappeared from the neighborhood and M&J is the latest casualty. This store has been running a "going out of business" sale for close to two years now. Same signs, same "everything must go" urgency, yet they're still open, still fully stocked, and their wholesale division is actively supplying major retailers like Walmart, TJ Maxx, and Burlington. A real closing sale has a legal time limit in NYC. This appears to be a permanent marketing tactic designed to pressure customers into impulse purchases. Don't fall for the fake urgency. Nice store. I went in yesterday to find buttons for an antique wedding dress I am trying to restore. They didn't have the fabric covered buttons but they did have Pearl buttons which will look great on this dress. I bought 30 of them. The young woman in the button room was pleasant. When I went to check out everything was 30% off because they are supposedly going out of business. In New York City, you never know if a business is really going out of business or not because they put those signs up all the time. All in all, it was a very easy transaction and I was done rather quickly. I was glad to find what I wanted, I had a very large selection of buttons, and a huge amount of trimmings. I've shopped at M&J for decades for sewing supplies: Ribbon, buttons, various closings (hooks & eyes and the like) trimming, stitch-on images, rhinestones and the like since the 1970s. My grandma--born in 1899--taught me to sew. She was a businesswoman; she and my grandfather owned a bar. He was the face and she handled the books. Stopped in last week and plan to make one more visit before they close. I'm not averse to buying online, but the great thing about shopping at M&J is that you just might find something you weren't expecting but realize you could put to good use. So yes, I think one last trip down there is in order. I shop online regularly and I'm pretty saavy when it comes to finding the things I need, but when it involves fabric and and other sewing materials there's nothing like finding something you had no idea you wanted/needed... including things for which you can't think of an immediate need but you just know might be useful in the future. M&J is a holdover from times when people bought clothing expecting it to last and assumed that they were going to keep it as long as it could be repaired, altered or hemmed up, not toss it within a year or two. And when clothing wore out, we saved the butons or other closings because hey--might need them one day--along with undamged fabric parts because hey, you might need them someday to patch or create something. I will miss M&J so very much because nothing beats seeing--and touching--sewing materials IRL. read more

I came here for my bridal shower favor decorations and found exactly what I needed! They have a specific bridal section, thankfully, and they have all the ribbons and lace in the world, of all colors and patterns. Their prices are pretty relatively high, though! For one of the lace trims I got, it was more than $13/yard. But if you want something unique and nice-looking, it's worth it. Their staff is always busy, but they are quick to help you out when you need it. Huge button selection in the back, too. If you're into arts and crafts, this is definitely a must-visit. M&J is like a gourmet candy store for sewers. The selection is pretty incredible with so many options you can't find in a chain fabric store. No one pestered me when I shopped in store and made it easy to get my selections cut, bagged, and tagged. I've bought sequined and beaded trims for costumes, ribbons and braids for a gown, and had so many different things on my wishlist. Yes the store is a little spendy but it's in a prime location in Manhattan and the quality is really nice. I love this store. My daughter and I come here whenever we need anything. In fact we've been coming here for years. She usually needs buttons or zippers. When you can sew and make your own clothes there's everything you need in every color at M&J. This store is so huge you could browse for hours. One time my daughter took so long they gave me a chair so I could sit to wait. They're nice like that at M&J Trim. You can see by my photo I had a huge variety of patches to select from. I had something in mind. The employee that assisted me was very nice. He gave me the explanation and tour then left me to decide. I didn't feel uncomfortable at all Shopping today. I've been shopping here for over a decade, back when I was in school. It's been a while since I last stopped in and looking at it with a new set of lenses. it a good store to shop, with lots of options, and if I could give 3.5 stars I would. However, since I can't, 3 seems fitting. Things I like: -A good assortment of authentic bouillon patches, averaging about $18each which seems fair. -You can get al your trimmings, buttons, ribbons, patches, appliqués, buckles and more -trims for apparel, accessories, furniture, home decor -"random" things like structures for making hats, feather boas -extensive collection of bridal lace and appliqués Things I don't like: -employees standing around and not offering to help -small selection of taping suitable for bridal collections (I wish they offered more, like Shindo -the store seems to be smaller, so guessing the assortment has shrunk too -employee uncertain of what they have. I came here on a Saturday around 2pm. I came looking for plain elastic to make elastic belts. They have some good options. A great assortment of ribbons, novelty and varsity letter appliqués, elastics, buttons, piping, pom-poms, lace & beaded trims. Sometimes I feel like they have lots of novelty options. Like fancy and unique trims. I wish they had more basic, simple trims in varying sizes and qualities. For example, I wish they had more different types of black elastic. More widths, thicknesses, in more varying qualities. There's also a Groupon deal sometimes available for $17 for $30 credit to spend. So if you come here often, take advantage! Do you need a button, they have them. Do you need ribbons, they have them. Do you need appliques....they have them and they will even iron them on for you. This place is a crafters heaven on earth. The store is bright and beautiful and you need some time just to take it all in. The employees were very helpful and had lovely demeanors. Prices vary from reasonable to expensive but depending on the project money may not be an issue. They had some unbelievable sequin iron on thingy that I totally loved but could not figure what to put it on. I am a glitter, bedazzle gal. G was circling the block so that I could run in and take a look so I did not want to take to long as he was navigating Manhattan traffic. This is definitely a place to visit without the car. Take the train or bus to this area as there is NO parking anywhere. Most streets are commercial vehicles only till late in the evening. There are other stores like this one nearby that you can also check out. If you sew or do any crafting and are visiting NYC you will love this store. Seriously overpriced. Exact same things online for 1/5th of the price. Please dont waste your money here. We paid $65 for three paper flowers. We were looking at another paper flower flower hair accessory which was reduced from $150 to $125 here. A quick search on etsy came up with the exact same thing for $26. Maybe you could shop here if it was an emergency, but if you can wait for shipping, go online. Also I asked the guy what the jewels were made of, he told me "real rhinestones" not plastic. I asked again, since rhinestone just means fake jewel, used to be made of glass or other stimulant and now mostly polymer. He just repeated that it was real rhinestones and not fake. One of New York's premier trim stores, M&J has amazing trim in a beautifully organized store. Their prices are a bit higher than some other trim stores, but they have beautiful, unique trims and notions that make this store a must visit if you're in the garment district. Any color rhinestones in the rainbow! They sell both hotfix and regular flatbacks. Enough Swarovski crystals to make you drool! Also a great selection of interesting buttons in the back! One of the best stores for buying interesting buttons. All beautifully organized by color! After shopping fabric stores in four states for the perfect ribbon trim I turned to the internet. Shopping at M&J Trimming on-line was a breeze. Eureka, I found just what I wanted to complement a project with their Jacqouard Ribbon. It is the true European look and quality with dainty flowers woven into the actual ribbon. After realizing how hard it is to find I ordered lots of extra ribbon. The day after I ordered they emailed me to notify me that the quantity of yards I had ordered was more than they had in stock. They gave me the option of filling my order with the seven yards they had or waiting for new stock to arrive. I jumped at receiving the seven yards as that was plenty for my current project. They promptly shipped it out and adjusted the charges to my credit card. When my package arrived I crossed my fingers that it would not be cheap looking or poor quality. Most trim shops on not on trend, and you will often have to make your own trimmings to create mood boards or garments to represent what is currently happening on the runway. However, with M & J trims everything is very current and they even have trim boards representing the latest runway shows or color palettes. The prices are a little higher than most places and they are always slammed with customers, but that is the price you pay for an open, clean atmosphere and quality trims. All cut items are sold by the yard only, unless they are over $20.00 and you can purchase a foot. I mainly go here for appliqués and buttons, since they have a selection of items that are more unique than most. That is why I come here to visit every time I am in New York. read more

I'm really impressed by the huge selection of iron on patches! Some were serious, some were sassy. I was looking to revamp a backpack and had a hard time choosing between so many great options. I went here during my lunch hour on an errand with my cousin, she needed to find an applique for shoes. She had a picture reference to show the attendant and he really helped on finding us the next best thing and he saved us money in doing so. We also were able to use the 10% Yelp deal which was great! It is so colorful in this store and it is well-maintained. The staff does a really terrific job of keeping everything orderly. The pieces and ribbons are so small and can easily be your worst nightmare but they are really great at keeping everything in place. They range from the basic colored ribbon, prints, lace, and lots of tassels. Some of them are seasonal too! The stock changes often enough based on my experience coming here a few times. M & J has been around for years. The building burnt down a few tears back enabling them to rebuild a bigger, more well organized store. If patches are your thing you are definitely in the right place. High quality patches of just about anything. They will even apply your patch to an article for $4. Ribbons, jewels and zippers abound. Walls of items to look at. Similar stores in the area but not as nice of quality as here. Most everyone is helpful. I agree with other reviews that a few young ladies in the store can be unfriendly but I believe it is more of a cultural difference than them being rude. I didn't know what I wanted to do to an old vintage hat I bought but I new I would find the answer at M&J. I love M&J because you can walk in and just start looking around and inspiration really is all around. If you get stuck hope that Atyia Seck is there because she knows what is in the store and she is wonderful at pointing out what you may not have noticed.
