A DREAM COME TRUE!!! I've wanted to visit Mood since I first saw Project Runway on TV in the mid-2000s. It finally happened in November of 2024!!! The staff was seriously so friendly and helpful! I went in on a mission with a few different fabrics I was looking for. Not only were they helpful in locating the fabrics, but they also made me feel welcome and supported as I bombarded them with many questions. I could've easily spent hours just looking at the bolts of fabrics that covered almost every inch of this place, but I only had one day to find what I needed so I cut my time short. Heads up: this store covers 3 different floors BUT you can only enter via its middle floor which is accessed via the elevator, which is on the right side when you enter the building. The other two floors can be accessed via the staircases in the store itself. Don't miss out on the top floor - it has boucle and tweed for dayssssssss! Can't wait to live in NYC so I can make a million jackets and skirt sets out of these beauties!

I went Mood fabrics to pick materials and fabric to build slipcover covers. We were helped by an amazing lady who was juggling four clients at once and also manning the phone. Her name is Josephine, and I have to command her for doing such an outstanding job. She managed to help us with exactly what we needed, allowing our amazing seamstress to be able to build us slipcovers for our dining room. They are thick, white canvas. Thank you, Josephine for your brilliant help. I am amazed she was able to do it alone, but then again, it would be better if there were more staff to help in the furniture upholstery department.

Visited on a rainy Saturday morning to go fabric hunting. I brought a very particular satin-y fabric scrap that changed colors between blue and maroon-red to try to match. Really appreciate the staff members trying to help me! We searched through different shelves and sections of the store, and everything we found was either the wrong color or the wrong texture. Even though we couldn't find what we were looking for, I really appreciate the effort they showed. This is a huge fabric store in the garment district. I could see why this would be a very popular fabric store. They also have a huge display of buttons, and really fun costumes and outfits on display on dress forms. It's very well-lit and feels very welcoming here. If I ever needed to come fabric hunting for future projects, I would definitely stop by Mood Fabrics again.

Huge fabric store on the 3rd floor. Staff was so incredibly friendly and helpful, from the moment you entered. Large selection of everything! Moderate to Pricey but worth every cent!

I adore the variety of fabrics and related items you can find at Mood, but the customer service here can be seriously lacking. There were a couple times during recent visits where I was asking staff some quick follow-up questions, and the various staff members seemed to act like they just could not be bothered. Very off-putting. Going to Mood is an experience, for sure... but there can be a serious lack of service here. The recognition of Mood from Project Runway seems to come with the negative aspect of the personnel in the store feeling like people will visit anyway... whether or not they're welcoming or service-minded. If/when you visit, just hope you find a member of the Mood team that cares about you finding what you need, answering your questions, or helping during the completion of the sale. TL;DR Variety is a big plus, but there are also plenty of stores in the Fashion District that can get my business because of their service-minded manner of operation.

How could I not love visiting Mood Fabrics? It is slightly hidden in that one must enter a stark lobby and go via elevator to find the store. A nice person at the 'door' (the elevator exit) checked my bag for me. I came here as a spectator, to see the real thing I have watched on Project Runway so many times. My grandmother worked in a sewing factory in the garment district where Mood is located, and I thought of her during my visit. I loved walking up and down the aisles and seeing all the different patterns and fabrics. What an insane plethora of textures and colors! Mood is a feast for the eyes that I enjoyed just as much as being in an art gallery. I think it's important to see where clothing might begin, and I love feeling even slightly empowered about sewing and making my own things. Yes, I visited all 3 floors and cooed over the pup. I really appreciate that the staff was so generous to the obvious spectators who weren't necessarily going to buy anything besides some patches and a Mood tote bag.

They've…read morealways been one of the larger stores with a very broad assortment of sewing and design accessories--everything from hundreds of ribbons (may thousands), trims, decals, rhinestones, fabrics, supportive inner garment materials, buttons, hair/costume jewelry components, the list goes on. Agree with some other reviews in that it's one of the pricier stores though you pay for the wide variety--hard to beat their selection. The course of time hasn't been kind to local production. Back in the 1820s up until the early 1980s, when mass garment production stateside was booming in NYC, the garment district employed up to 46% of the city's industrial workforce. There was a need to design and purchase materials nearby, and the majority of Manhattan's midtown west side was dedicated to factories and design studios. Fast fwd to now, that statistic is much different and given the availability of online and global sources, not everyone needs to go into a physical store to purchase their needs. While many products have long moved to overseas sourcing, for anyone who's endeavored DIY arts and crafts, or even made any functional product by hand, it's much different seeing and feeling a material in person than on a screen. That's where in this past century, stores like M&J played a vital role in the fabric of the garment district. They are also a valuable resource to the numerous design students at FIT, Parsons, etc. During past decade many a longtime stalwart trim store have disappeared from the neighborhood and M&J is the latest casualty. If you are interested in sewing or design notions, now's your chance to pick up items at their going-out-of-business sale.

I wanted a lining for a skirt I have and brought it with me for reference. The shopkeeper was beyond helpful- he saved me money too! First, I picked a fabric not realizing it was expensive. It was not me but him who checked that I was willing to pay for an expensive fabric to line my not so expensive skirt. I realized he was right, and he immediately directed me towards a much cheaper fabric that would suit my purposes. Then, I asked his opinion on how many yards he thought I would need. I told him I was thinking 3 or 4, and after taking a look at my skirt, he assured me that 3 would be plenty. He easily could have sold me too many yards of a fabric that was expensive. Instead, he took the time to help me with my individual needs, and did it with a smile. I had a little trouble understanding his accent at times, but whenever I asked him to repeat himself, he was patient with me. Pricing is mostly as expected, you will pay a few dollars extra per yard as opposed to some of the discount fabric stores. Personally, spending the few extra bucks at B&J is always worth the trade-off because of the smooth and well-designed experience in the store. They stock high-quality materials and I have never been disappointed in something I've purchased. This store goes the extra mile and will provide you with up to (I believe) 15 free samples per visit. Their inventory is extremely well-managed and they put a bar code/ID sticker on each fabric sample they give you. This way, the process is extremely fast when going back to the store to make purchases. The employees can simply scan the sticker from any of the samples and cut you a piece to length. The whole process seldom takes more than 5 minutes once you have decided what you want. This beats the discount stores 10/10 times in my book, because I save so much time that it warrants the slightly higher price. I have not written any reviews for fabric stores because, frankly, my experience has been nearly identical at all of them EXCEPT for B&J. Along with my fabric purchases, I was looking for bag/backpack hardware today which they do not really carry. One of the employees (did not get her name) was kind enough to hand me a printed list of other stores and recommend a couple that would have what I was looking for. She was absolutely spot on, and I got everything else I needed from the other store. I really appreciated the tip, I have not had a comparable experience or been given this level of attention/help at any other fabric shop in NYC.

All fabric clearly fresh and new, not from a poorly managed warehouse, but obviously from a neat and orderly business. Thanks y'all! I'm in SC and found you online. I used to live in NJ and Staten Island. Some NYC fabric stores don't have adequate websites, but yours is not only adequate, but excellent! The only thing I would add is: care instructions on each product page. I am mystified as to how to launder the cotton guipure lace I purchased, and I conclude that I will do dry clean only to stay way on the safe side. Thanks again!
