Omg-I was honestly in heaven here!! Ever since I first saw this particular fabric store on project runway I've always wanted to go and grace their I aisles !! I can't believe it's literally three floors and row after row of fabric on every type of role there could be possible, trim, glitter, tool, leather, and vegan leather! Then don't even get me started on all the thread, buttons, and home decor! It's enough to make your head spin!! Everything is incredibly organized by section, textures and style of patterns or solids! I was thoroughly impressed and yet so overwhelmed. I spent 45 minutes, just looking at every fabric and touching everything in sight that I couldn't buy a single yard of anything!! There's a cutting station in a couple of different spot spots as well as stairs and an elevator in case you need to maneuver around, but goodness! I could live here and never get tired!! Now that I think about it, I never looked at the prices but one of the fabrics was $24 a yard. It was a soft jersey fabric, so I'm sure it was more expensive. I should've looked up more prices, but honestly, I was just so overwhelmed, and I wanted to walk through each aisle away! There were a number of employees on each floor, helping other people and restocking other fabrics. I didn't want to bother with asking any questions because I was so enchanted with the fabric store itself! I'm so happy to have graced mood fabrics presence in New York, especially since all the fabrics have gone out of business over here on the West Coast in California! I honestly cannot wait to go back and actually buy some fabric! Lol I will definitely be working on some sketches for a dress or something so I can go in to mood fabrics with a game plan besides being overwhelmed by everything! lol read more

Mood Fabrics - Omg I'm dying!!!! - Fabric Stores Near Me - New York, New York

I ordered a swatch of silk of 4 ply silk crepe to make sure of the color. I had the Miami store send the order directly to my dressmaker. The fabric they sent was not the same color as the swatch. The Miami store blamed the online department and the online department blamed the Miami store. Meanwhile I have a dress in the wrong color. Their customer service is horrible. They didn't seem to care one bit that they had sent the wrong fabric. I would not recommend making any online purchases from this store. read more

No complaints. Basically what you would expect in NY. The staff was great. The choices were for me overwhelming. We were visiting from out of State for strict fabric and vintage clothes shopping. Basically a store catering to up and coming designers. The prices are very very vast range. If you can't find it there I don't know what to tell you. 2 floors and rows and rows of fabrics. read more

A DREAM COME TRUE!!! I've wanted to visit Mood since I first saw Project Runway on TV in the mid-2000s. It finally happened in November of 2024!!! The staff was seriously so friendly and helpful! I went in on a mission with a few different fabrics I was looking for. Not only were they helpful in locating the fabrics, but they also made me feel welcome and supported as I bombarded them with many questions. I could've easily spent hours just looking at the bolts of fabrics that covered almost every inch of this place, but I only had one day to find what I needed so I cut my time short. Heads up: this store covers 3 different floors BUT you can only enter via its middle floor which is accessed via the elevator, which is on the right side when you enter the building. The other two floors can be accessed via the staircases in the store itself. Don't miss out on the top floor - it has boucle and tweed for dayssssssss! Can't wait to live in NYC so I can make a million jackets and skirt sets out of these beauties! read more

No wonder it's called Mood fabrics! The staff are rude and unhelpful and quite frankly seem like they pick kids off the street who know very little about fabric. read more

It's a fun place to visit, it's mood of course. Albeit in the fabric district there are other places that are better priced. They do have a very wide selection of fabrics, I'll give them that and the service was great as well. I'd be back to peek in if I'm back in the area. read more

I went Mood fabrics to pick materials and fabric to build slipcover covers. We were helped by an amazing lady who was juggling four clients at once and also manning the phone. Her name is Josephine, and I have to command her for doing such an outstanding job. She managed to help us with exactly what we needed, allowing our amazing seamstress to be able to build us slipcovers for our dining room. They are thick, white canvas. Thank you, Josephine for your brilliant help. I am amazed she was able to do it alone, but then again, it would be better if there were more staff to help in the furniture upholstery department. read more

Visited on a rainy Saturday morning to go fabric hunting. I brought a very particular satin-y fabric scrap that changed colors between blue and maroon-red to try to match. Really appreciate the staff members trying to help me! We searched through different shelves and sections of the store, and everything we found was either the wrong color or the wrong texture. Even though we couldn't find what we were looking for, I really appreciate the effort they showed. This is a huge fabric store in the garment district. I could see why this would be a very popular fabric store. They also have a huge display of buttons, and really fun costumes and outfits on display on dress forms. It's very well-lit and feels very welcoming here. If I ever needed to come fabric hunting for future projects, I would definitely stop by Mood Fabrics again. read more

While the fabric selection us amazing and you are in NYC shopping at the famous Mood, I will not be back. For the second time, the customer service was deplorable. Tried to find a specific fabric that I found on their website. I even showed them the webpage but they only pointed me to the aisle where I "might" find it. I was confronted by a huge selection of stacks of bolts of fabric up to the ceiling. I did a quick scan and left. They don't need my business. read more

Knowledgeable, helpful staff and mind boggling selection. I would give more stars if that was possible

I ordered 4 yards of discounted ponte fabric from the Mood website and received only 1 yard. Since then, I've spent significant time calling, emailing, and chatting with customer service--sending photos, receipts, and explanations--yet the issue was never properly resolved. Despite clear proof of my 4‑yard purchase, I was told the price was a "glitch," refunded, and left with a single unusable yard of fabric. This has been frustrating, time‑consuming, and deeply disappointing. I expected better accountability and customer support. Let's hope you'll never need their online customer service, as you won't get it. read more

The customer service my daughter and I received at Mood was outstanding. Although all the store personnel were helpful, Noel went above and beyond to assist us,particularly once he realized how badly we needed his guidance. He turned what could have been a disaster into a positive fabric shopping experience for us. read more

How have I never reviewed Mood? My first time ordering a decade ago I purchased like 20 yards of a knit fabric. That had giant gash marks in the middle of it. Emailed CS and they said "manufacturers do that also they can color check by putting an old roll under it"... Okay, no heads up though? Someone had to have seen it while measuring, but no. So, clearly we started off with a rocky relationship. My first in-person shopping experience was a couple years later and the store itself is big. Multiple floors, shit everywhere, but for real the only good experience I had with a human being was with the doorman downstairs. The people working there didn't want to/couldn't really answer questions and didn't want to be there. I don't need people to be peppy, but if you can't point me to where certain types of fabric might be? Yikes. I filed this memory away for a while until I shopped in person again when living in the area. Same thing. Weird passive aggressive attitudes and not super helpful. Yes I got my stuff cut, went to the register and was cashed out, but it's like the store could straight up be self-serve and have a better time. Over the years I mail-ordered small bits and pieces because I'm a compulsive fabric hoarder, and it's been fine. Nothing terrible happened, nothing was seriously damaged. But then I had the most frustrating client tell me she wanted a specific shade of silk taffeta and silk chiffon, and she ~found it online at Mood~ I tried so hard to get her to switch to my preferred silk suppliers. Nope. I told her it was almost 2x the price of what I can source. Nope. Ordered it and found the taffeta had enough flaws that were large enough that I had to cut around them and I hated my life. And then the weight and quality was a fraction of what I buy from other suppliers. It was overpriced for a subpar product, but my burn test did at least show it was silk. Lastly, the website can be chaotic in how you search/display things and I've had it crash my browser a couple times. And if you're considering their free patterns, treat them as if they're a beginner designer's first try in getting a pattern graded and digitized. I've had a legging pattern have legs for someone 6'+ with zero mention of what the finished inseam is (or an accurate fabric requirement, or the size chart at all) among other funny things that you don't see until you print them and piece the paper together. It's cool that they're free, but definitely treat them with the skepticism they deserve. TL;DR: Mood has a lot of stuff, not all of it great, a lot of it over priced, and the people working there might hate you for simply existing. Project Runway probably ruined the experience. read more

I adore the variety of fabrics and related items you can find at Mood, but the customer service here can be seriously lacking. There were a couple times during recent visits where I was asking staff some quick follow-up questions, and the various staff members seemed to act like they just could not be bothered. Very off-putting. Going to Mood is an experience, for sure... but there can be a serious lack of service here. The recognition of Mood from Project Runway seems to come with the negative aspect of the personnel in the store feeling like people will visit anyway... whether or not they're welcoming or service-minded. If/when you visit, just hope you find a member of the Mood team that cares about you finding what you need, answering your questions, or helping during the completion of the sale. TL;DR Variety is a big plus, but there are also plenty of stores in the Fashion District that can get my business because of their service-minded manner of operation. read more

My experience today was excellent, largely due to the outstanding assistance I received from Alex in the home section. Her deep knowledge, patience, and helpful attitude made navigating the extensive fabric selection much easier and more enjoyable. read more

My happy place. Truth: the first place I go when I land in NYC. It exhausts my greed and that is saying a lot. As someone else commented, I too am sorry this place became common knowledge via Project Runway; it was wonderful to have it as a fantastic insider secret, known only to Parson's/FIT -et al- students and designers at all levels. But the quality has thankfully remained as high as it ever was. Prices range from reasonably low to triple digits, and you do get what you pay for. The high end fabrics are just spectacular, and if nothing else, you can usually get a half yard of those works of art unless it's too heavily beaded/jeweled/sequined or is sold by the panel (a pre cut single piece with finished edges). Lots of them are from big name designers. It is a shame also that Mood cannot show all it has on it's website for online shopping...that would be impossible. You simply must go and see the array of treasures for yourself. Three floors. Buttons, trims, silk velvet burnouts, luxury men's suiting fabric folded and kept on polished wooden shelves, feathers, real and faux furs, real and faux reptile skins, suedes, knits, every form of silk, cashmeres, cottons, jerseys...and just to drive you even more insane, Mood also has a separate home fabrics shop next door. Yes, there are other pretty great fabric stores in the NYC area, but none are as big or extensive in range. Service is harried, but I have never had cause to complain. You may also buy wholesale if you have the correct credentials. I strongly suggest you hire wheels since it will be sheer hell to lug the inevitable bulging bags you will leave with, around Manhattan. Expect to encounter the owner's Boston terrier and house mascot, Swatch, who is usually splayed somewhere napping. He is also listed for sale on Mood's site; price: $1,080,962.96 read more

How could I not love visiting Mood Fabrics? It is slightly hidden in that one must enter a stark lobby and go via elevator to find the store. A nice person at the 'door' (the elevator exit) checked my bag for me. I came here as a spectator, to see the real thing I have watched on Project Runway so many times. My grandmother worked in a sewing factory in the garment district where Mood is located, and I thought of her during my visit. I loved walking up and down the aisles and seeing all the different patterns and fabrics. What an insane plethora of textures and colors! Mood is a feast for the eyes that I enjoyed just as much as being in an art gallery. I think it's important to see where clothing might begin, and I love feeling even slightly empowered about sewing and making my own things. Yes, I visited all 3 floors and cooed over the pup. I really appreciate that the staff was so generous to the obvious spectators who weren't necessarily going to buy anything besides some patches and a Mood tote bag. read more

Mood Fabrics - so many beautiful rolls of fabrics - Fabric Stores Near Me - New York, New York

A multi level fabric shop in Manhattan on West side that has a endless supply of fabrics for any type of project from beginners to experts .stopped by to pick up some velvet trimmings and linen cloth for a friend's daughter's school project and glad the gal who works here was able to help me cause I don't know much about fabrics and a person could get lost inside here with all the stuff they have available. The Mood Fabrics apparel store is on the 3rd floor of what it looks like a hotel or office lobby. Take the elevator upstairs and you can feel like you're part of the Project Runway scrummaging through all the fabrics. There are 3 levels where the top floor is more of the wool and suit material 2nd level being lace, sequence, satin, and etc and bottom floor being cotton and leather. The number of fabric options were plentiful but for an amateur sewer like me, it was just so overwhelming since everything is stacked on top of each other that it was hard to really look through. Definitely more props needed for the Project Runway contestants in finding the perfect fabrics for their designs. In the end, I've chosen a fabric that stood out the most but not 100% satisfied as I had late discovered the bottom floor afterwards. So word of advice, take plenty of time to explore all floors. Most of the fabric pricing are steep that be sure of what you're looking for beforehand as well. As for me, the fabric that I had purchased will probably be collecting dust until I can somewhat create a top. And once I can master a dress, I have my eyes set out on vera wang fabric on the 3rd floor that I would be making future visits. read more

It is more expensive than a lot of the stores in the Garment District, and the selection is not better for it. It can be difficult to find out what the content and provenance of the fabric is because the price tag is usually tucked inside the bolt roll and not always easy to get to. The staff are used to tourists and are unusually friendly and polite by NYC standards, so if you like nice service, it's a non-intimidating place to visit. But don't make it your only stop in GD. read more

Buyer beware! You may not know what you are actually buying. I still dont. Here's my story: I was looking for upholstery fabric. They have a decent selection. After identifying something I liked in the store, I made an expensive purchase of that fabric, costing in the many hundreds of dollars, online. The sales person was helpful. However even after numerous emails back and forth I was unable to get the name of the manufacturer from Mood's sales person. When you go into the Manhattan store, there's no info about what you are buying, maybe "100 % cotton" if you are lucky but not even that, on the fabric tags. The online sales folks do not automatically tell you if it is stain resistant treated, what the "rub count" is, or any other details. After ordering I gleaned from email back and forth that it was made in Turkey, not treated for stains, and a very low rub count for upholstery fabric. Now, upholstery is labor intensive and hence expensive to do, plus requiring many yards of fabric, so I wanted to get the product number, see the spec sheets (this exists for upholstery fabric), and to know if and how the fabric was stain protected, if it had "quick dry " and other things. I asked if indeed this was actually upholstery fabric and they said, yes, and as proof said because it was listed on the Mood website as such. Which proves zilch. Here's what they wrote, without documentation. It is double speak: "We completely understand that you want to know more about the fabrics you are using for your upholstery project(s), to make them the best that they can possibly be - and we love to support our customers! Unfortunately, we cannot accommodate your request for core, proprietary company information that we work hard to build and maintain. And..."The supplier has advised that: Unfortunately they do not have the flame test results for Mimoza but they can verify that it passes CA117. Also they do not have a copy of the formal documentation" I could not find using Google: Mimoza, velvet, CA117 and made in Turkey. So if you care about flamability, fabric content, and generally what you are buying, ask before you buy. Not consumer friendly. I am hoping my sofa doesn't go up in flames. Mood Fabrics, if you are reading this, I'd still like to know what I bought. read more

Mood is a fantastic fabric store to begin with, but the staff make the experience review worthy. While I've never had a bad experience with any of the team, I can't stress how helpful Brian, Tyler, Lena, and Ruth have been. They all went above and beyond to help me, especially Brian and Tyler. Brian is incredibly knowledgeable and an absolute pleasure to talk to. Every single one of my thousands of questions that I've asked him, he had an answer to. He didn't rush me and he took his time to really explain the answers to me, rather than just providing a response. Tyler dedicated so much of her time to helping me with my incredibly specific search criteria, and I really couldn't be more appreciative. I am a Canadian and ordered from Mood in March of 2023. My order arrived, I paid for it, no problems. In September I randomly looked at my CC statement and saw a charge for approx. $200 from Mood. I emailed the company right away who told me my order from March (6 months previous!) was not paid for. I checked my CC statement and confirmed that I absolutely was charged. This situation infuriated me for a couple of reasons: 1. How do they have access to my CC info after purchase? I work for 2 retail companies and we can not look up CC info from past customers. Aside from the last 4 digits, the CC number is blocked out. 2. No communication was sent out in advance, or at the time of the charge. Had I not looked at my CC statement, I would not know about the charge. 3. They initially told me the charge would be cancelled out - but of course it wasn't. Mood agreed to refund me (also, this is a no-brainer because they were entirely in the wrong). Once I received the refund, there was a difference of about $11 because the exchange rate at the time of charge was different from the day of the exchange. I messaged Mood mid-October and they said they'd refund me the difference. 3 or 4 weeks went by and I hadn't received my refund so I contacted them again. They apparently changed their mind and told me they are not responsible for the exchange rate being different and very condescendingly "explained" to me how exchange rates work and they are only responsible to refund in USD dollars. I am aware of how exchange rates work. I was infuriated once again, because: 1. They told me I'd be refunded the difference and then just expected I wouldn't notice, or forget, when they didn't refund me? 2. This entire charge was their fault. I did not authorize the charge or approve it. They will not take full accountability for it. So while they claim to not be responsible for the difference in exchange rate, I am definitely not responsible for paying out of pocket for their mistake. I sent a couple of messages back to try and dispute this and they aren't budging. This entire situation has been the worst customer service I've ever received and I am appalled. I've been dealing with Kristina Bekdas, Customer Care Supervisor. read more

Mood Fabrics - Fabric Stores Near Me - New York, New York

Something I've wanted to do for sure on my trip to New York was come to Mood Designer fabrics and check out the place where designers from my favorite reality TV show (Project Runway) come to get their stuff. I sew as a hobby and I am always looking for, and buying fabric. It should've been like heaven for me. The place is absolutely overwhelming. There are multiple floors with fabrics literally from floor to ceiling. You absolutely cannot see it all! In fact you cannot see most of it because the bolts are packed so tightly, you cannot get them out to see, you have to get help but there isn't a lot of help going around. This is very famous place and it is in fashion District so naturally is always packed. I was here for about an hour and a half and I barely put a dent on it. They have fabric for every budget. I believe I saw some as low as $9 dollars a yard, and as much as $275 a yard. But most of it does not have price tags. I thought I would really love it but I actually didn't. I take my smaller fabric stores anytime, even if they don't have us much selection I rather be able to see everything they offer than having too much choice but not being able to see it. I didn't end up buying anything but zippers that were dirt cheap. It is quite an experience, though, but you need to know where everything is, and you need to come in with plenty of time. read more

I find it rare in the U.S. to find a fabric store still standing that's individually owned and operated by family members. While my review is from my personal experience over the past five years, I can certainly understand how incredibly challenging it can be to perform every day for customers and vendors equally. I have grown to appreciate the hard work the employees at Mood Apparel Fabrics do on a daily basis to keep things running so smoothly. Especially Helen, Kristina and Holly. I first heard about Mood from a fellow pattern making student at Apparel Arts in Oakland in 2017. Every order I've received has been carefully packaged and sent very quickly to me across the U.S. (east coast to west coast). The fabrics I ordered online were of great quality. This included silks, satins, metallic lames and velvets. Out of several orders (under 100), I only once or maybe twice run into a snag, and the customer service team quickly ironed out the issue and exceeded my expectations. So thank you, Mood team. This review is overdue and I hope others will learn to continue to rely on Mood for their future sewing projects. Attached is one of my favorite dresses I recently made with their products. read more

Basically an echo of what everyone else has said. A fantastic array of fabrics with fair prices, with a BIG downside being the lack customer service. We spent at least 15-20 minutes standing and waiting as the two staff members were too busy arguing and trying to pass the buck on who had to help us.
