I love this store and and its employees. I was looking for a particular fabric. One store I shall not name, but trust me, you've heard of it, was selling it for fifty dollars a yard. YIKES. But I'm new, so I thought that must be a fairly normal price. Then one day, I was at Sil, and happened to wander into Fabric House because they had a gorgeous silk in the window I wanted to stare at. While I was there, I wandered over to the fabric I had bought elsewhere. They had a cool color, but I was scared to ask the price. The guy said, "$15 a yard." I said, "ah, fifty." He said "No. FIFTEEN." SOLD. lol. They have a good selection of really pretty fabric and their prices are apparently excellent. The employees are always friendly and helpful as well. Any time I'm now looking for fabric, this shop is my starting point. read more

Beautiful fabrics here, but many of them, especially the handmade ones, are well over $100. The fabrics imported from are more expensive than ones from East Asia. The staff isn't the most polite, they were kind of curt and followed me around and kept asking me what I want. I chose a pink lace fabric that costed $35/yd. One of the staff cut the fabric for me, but then proceeded to dragg the fabric on the floor, and didn't listen to me when I told him not to do that. Really?! For such expensive fabric, you'd drag it along the floor?! What the heck! Thanks for dirtying up the beautiful fabric I agreed to buy from you! Right after leaving, when I explored another fabric store close by, I instantly felt buyer's regret because I saw a similar fabric, but prettier and more cost-efficient. I wish I hadn't bought from Fabric House, but maybe I'll just use what I bought for a future project. read more

Verbally assaulted me for asking for a quote The owner verbally abused me for asking the price of a potential alteration. I walked in asking for a quote on some small alterations jobs, including replacing the waist elastic on 2 simple cotton dresses. He said that he doesn't know sewing himself, but estimated the that work would be around 50 bucks per dress. When I told him that that's about four times more than the job would usually cost and asked if I could run the quote by his tailor, he said no, she's busy right now. When I asked if I could get her number to call in later, he told me no, he wouldn't do business with me anyway. When I said, "this is not the way to treat a customer," he sneered "I don't want cheapskate customers like you. 25 years in business!" By my estimation, even people on a budget deserve to be treated with dignity. There are far nicer ways to decline a job.... but also, most shops would bother to give an accurate price quote before turning down a customer, no? Do yourself a favor and steer clear of this rude crook. read more

Ali and Yelly are the absolute best! I worked with them to have a dress custom made for a friend's wedding. After calling to ensure Fabric House did custom evening wear, I went in to meet with Ali and browse fabrics. He immediately suggested Yelly as the designer, I sent her pics of dress ideas and made an appointment to meet with her the following week. Upon meeting with Yelly, we reviewed my dress pics, selected the best fabrics to achieve the look and she took my measurements. There were a few text exchanges in between, but my dress was pretty much ready within weeks as only one 'official' fitting was needed. The dress turned out even better than originally envisioned and I received so many compliments at the wedding (the dress was actually quite the topic of conversation). Because Ali and Yelly are consummate professionals and so easy to work with, I will definitely trust Fabric House with my future needs for anything custom made. read more

I want to thank them so much for fixing my dog's bunny. When I brought it to them it was torn, the stuffing was gone, and it was beyond my repair skills. Lucy is very attached to it and although it was a small request the staff understood the importance and did a wonderful job. It was my first time buying anything from Fabric House fabrics and I'm 100% blown away by the amazing quality and service that was provided during my shopping experience. Not only was the staff helpful and knowledgeable, but the product was excellent quality and beautiful. The fabric that I selected was actually on one of their new dress displays in their window. I thought it was pretty cool and interesting to know that a fabric store host fashion shows and benefits to help organizations such as the ASPCA. One of the staff also mentioned that the showroom was still a work in progress and to come back to check out the fun additions that they will be adding. This spot carries costume and designer fabrics (wholesale and retail.) It's the kind of place where you select everything you want in your head before asking for it to be cut -- then talk the down a little by adding more items to the pile BEFORE cutting. Non-silk Chinese brocades average $7/yd while Silk Chinese brocades average $12/yd. They also carry linens and heavily beaded laces and chiffons. It's the kind of place you'll need time to hunt for the best things. Mail order is welcomed by them. read more

The guy that works at the front - i think he's the owner or the son of the owner - was unfriendly, didn't break a smile, and looked at me like I was crazy when I told him I was looking for natural fiber fabrics. I was ready to spend more than $1k in fabric. I did spend more than $1K a few hours later , a few doors down at Paron Fabrics. The guy at the front door wouldn't smile, didn't seem eager to help. Fabric House does have a great selection, but the fabric business is competitive. A smile and interest in your customer go a long way, and I don't want to spend money with someone who doesn't value my business. He seemed much more interested helping other customers who were buying small quantities. Also, when I went in the day after to tell him I spent $1600 across the street because he was rude and unhelpful, he said that he didn't care about my business. I'm surprised they've been on 39th street for as long as they have. Don't give mean people your business, when the landlords raise his rent, I won't be sad to see him gone. read more

Great place for costuming and finishing materials for puppets. Wholesale and retail. I'm new to shopping in the garment district, but this this definitely a place to negotiate price per yard. You'll get extremely different numbers from each of the sales people, so it's important to understand the average cost of what you are looking for. Example: the grumpy old guy started at $60 per yard for a particularly elaborate textile and another sales associate started at $30per yard for the SAME textile. If you're not sure if it's a fair price, walk away. read more

My daughter brought in a chain mail dress for alterations. She didn't have an appointment, but was recommended to Yelanis. We were grateful that there was space for her to have a consultation. During the fitting, my daughter was told the needed alterations were possible. This was on 9/7/22 and we needed it for her birthday celebration on 9/25/22. The tailor said she could do it. That same day, my oldest daughter had a falling out with the owner, by Friday the "falling out" reached its breaking point and the owner said that the dress would no longer be worked on, and to "collect" it. That was impossible to do because the tailor had possession of it. The tailor was contacted and she said she would still work on the dress, as the owner had no authority to say that. She promised it would be ready the next week. My daughter saw her in person, and then made several attempts to pick up the dress. The tailor stated she was super busy. We were fine with getting the dress as it was and taking it to another tailor. Yelanis was told that Saturday had to be the pick up date, if she was going to tailor it. She responded with "I'll see". I had to contact her, myself, in which she seemed not pleased, in order to get a time for her to allow us to pick up the dress. She held on to this garment until the day before; but it seemed like she was attempting to not return it until after the date. When we received it, it had 2 sloppy thread stitches, as she said the material was too delicate to do any adjustments. Absolutely unacceptable. This seems to have been done intentionally, as a way to show the last bit of controlling middle finger towards my family. We didn't ask for any favors, we didn't ask for anything for free. We intended to be full paying customers and to be treated as such. But alas, petty supersedes professionalism. read more

Fabric House has got to be my favorite store in the garment district! Always helpful. Always polite. Always willing to work with me. One time when I was shopping there, I bought 3 yards each of 10 colors chiffon. Because I was getting so much, I accidentally left one piece behind. It took me 2 weeks to get back because I was so busy. When I walked in the door they immediately remembered me and said they had saved the fabric for me. When they couldn't find it, they cut me new fabric for free! Ever since then I always go there. I tell everyone I know! read more

Stopped by this store looking for brocade based on the previous review. Small store with small selection of everything. Brocades here are $15 per yard straight across the board. Not a large selection as next door at Ayazmoon. The 3 guys working here were assisting other people and were helpful, not pushy. read more

I'm putting on a senior collection for school and needed massive amounts of red velvet (40 yards). I searched up and down the garment district looking for the best deals and came to Fabric House first because I had been before. Originally I was told 12$, then 10$ bottom bare minimum. When I explained to them I would need way more and really need 40 yds, they went out of their way to not only GET me a fresh, in the box roll of silk velvet in my color, but they gave it to me for 8.50$! I couldn't be happier with them, even though I went 2-3 weeks between getting the 8.50$ quote and actually buying the fabric, they were true to their word and were so wonderful. I would absolutely come back and buy from them again! read more

Loved the Fabric House. I agree with others that help is not friendly but that did not stop me from purchasing fabric here. I purchased fabric to make summer tops. They are my favorite summer tops and the fabric is cool and comfortable. The price was very affordable compared to what I can purchase at home in Michigan. I would definitely recommend shopping here. I went in for a very specific type of fabric (similar to an Indian throw) to hang on my wall. After describing what I was doing with the material they brought out several bolts of exactly what I was looking for! I almost bought something similar at a street fair but it was about $200, I got a yard of this here for $35. They were super helpful! read more

I forgot a bag of very expensive swarovski trimmings at this store .. i bought a few things there and left.. i was all the way back on the east side when i reaslized i left the crystal trimmings there.. I called and they were closing in 2 minutes... I really needed the things i left there NOW! the man was kind enough to wait for me in terrible traffic to get back there and then would not acceot any money for waiting for me! i have to say that deserves 5 stars.
