Rita was a big help and was willing to show me endless varieties of fabric, but this was the perfect choice.

Omg-I was honestly in heaven here!! Ever since I first saw this particular fabric store on project…read morerunway I've always wanted to go and grace their I aisles !! I can't believe it's literally three floors and row after row of fabric on every type of role there could be possible, trim, glitter, tool, leather, and vegan leather! Then don't even get me started on all the thread, buttons, and home decor! It's enough to make your head spin!! Everything is incredibly organized by section, textures and style of patterns or solids! I was thoroughly impressed and yet so overwhelmed. I spent 45 minutes, just looking at every fabric and touching everything in sight that I couldn't buy a single yard of anything!! There's a cutting station in a couple of different spot spots as well as stairs and an elevator in case you need to maneuver around, but goodness! I could live here and never get tired!! Now that I think about it, I never looked at the prices but one of the fabrics was $24 a yard. It was a soft jersey fabric, so I'm sure it was more expensive. I should've looked up more prices, but honestly, I was just so overwhelmed, and I wanted to walk through each aisle away! There were a number of employees on each floor, helping other people and restocking other fabrics. I didn't want to bother with asking any questions because I was so enchanted with the fabric store itself! I'm so happy to have graced mood fabrics presence in New York, especially since all the fabrics have gone out of business over here on the West Coast in California! I honestly cannot wait to go back and actually buy some fabric! Lol I will definitely be working on some sketches for a dress or something so I can go in to mood fabrics with a game plan besides being overwhelmed by everything! lol

No complaints. Basically what you would expect in NY. The staff was great. The choices were for me…read moreoverwhelming. We were visiting from out of State for strict fabric and vintage clothes shopping. Basically a store catering to up and coming designers. The prices are very very vast range. If you can't find it there I don't know what to tell you. 2 floors and rows and rows of fabrics.

M&J Trimming - The end of an era, M&J Trimmings was one of the main purveyors of novelty sewing notions in the garment district since 1938

M&J is one of those garment district institutions that's been around for nearly 90 years. They've…read morealways been one of the larger stores with a very broad assortment of sewing and design accessories--everything from hundreds of ribbons (may thousands), trims, decals, rhinestones, fabrics, supportive inner garment materials, buttons, hair/costume jewelry components, the list goes on. Agree with some other reviews in that it's one of the pricier stores though you pay for the wide variety--hard to beat their selection. The course of time hasn't been kind to local production. Back in the 1820s up until the early 1980s, when mass garment production stateside was booming in NYC, the garment district employed up to 46% of the city's industrial workforce. There was a need to design and purchase materials nearby, and the majority of Manhattan's midtown west side was dedicated to factories and design studios. Fast fwd to now, that statistic is much different and given the availability of online and global sources, not everyone needs to go into a physical store to purchase their needs. While many products have long moved to overseas sourcing, for anyone who's endeavored DIY arts and crafts, or even made any functional product by hand, it's much different seeing and feeling a material in person than on a screen. That's where in this past century, stores like M&J played a vital role in the fabric of the garment district. They are also a valuable resource to the numerous design students at FIT, Parsons, etc. During past decade many a longtime stalwart trim store have disappeared from the neighborhood and M&J is the latest casualty. If you are interested in sewing or design notions, now's your chance to pick up items at their going-out-of-business sale.

I stopped by about half an hour before closing to ask about getting a recently bought pouch resized to fit my laptop. Even though I truly felt like a chicken walking around without it's head, the owners treated me with kindness and respect. While I felt sheepish about my request and my lack of of familiarity with all things sewing, their warmth helped me feel at ease. The shop itself is small, as is such with most mom and pop establishments, with Hossein working his magic in the back, buttons a galore in the front, fabrics in the middle, and ribbons scattered throughout. I could spend some time inspecting and exploring each and every texture and color available but didn't want to dilly dally too much before they were to go home. Overall, they were able to take on my sewing request--it was reasonably priced (I think!) and I helped myself to some paracord for a little craft project of mine. Very comfortable space with some people who are experts in their field and provide a very calm and reassuring energy. I'll be back to pickup some bits and bobs here and there rather than taking my business to a big retail store like I usually do. An east village gem!

I…read morehave another fabric store that I frequent for supplies but they did not have anything that would work with the other fabric I already had. I was making pants for the first time and they were different colors, so the materials had to work well together as far as weight and appearance. This is a family-owned, Black-owned, women-owned, small business in the Bronx and they don't stop at just offering fabric, trimmings and tailoring. They also host sewing camps for kids and adults. They have various types of machines thta you cna come in to try out and see what might work for you. The prices of their fabrics are reasonable. I did purchase some shears that I was able to find for less money elsewhere, and I was able to return them in exchange for store credit. This policy did not bother me because I plan to return for more fabric, as our cosplay is quickly becoming an annual tradition, but be advised that you will get store credit in lieu of a full refund. Owners, Clarissa and Nadine, are very knowledgeable and a wealth of tips and suggestions. If you're just starting our, they are perfect to answer any questions you may have. I'm fairly new and went in not know what I could do. I basically just explained my dilemma and was directed to the best fabric for what I wanted to construct. It was the first time I ever made pants, two-toned no less, and they came out amazing. When I visited, I had my kiddo with me and she was gifted with some scrap fabric and an elastic band, and a quick tutorial to construct a simple scrunchie. She was super ecstatic and I hope she takes to sewing as I have. I will definitely be regularly visiting for my cosplay construction needs.

Here, she bought all her threads, Singer machine needles, zippers, etc. With a minimalist Pinterest inspiration for a small beige linen curtain for my new half-bathroom in mind, my mom and I searched for the fabric. Similar to Chester Sewing, Blossom Holness still remains the lone survivor in the world of family-owned fabric stores as I previously described in my Chester Sewing review. Now, with brand new owners, Nadine and her ladies are bringing a new mix to their model. She's included 6? 8? 10? portable sewing machines for sewing classes. What a wonderful idea and addition to their shop to bring the community together. You'll find the silks with silks, cotton with cotton, upholstery-type fabric with like fabric, etc. Except, out of all the colors available, beige was non-existent, so settled for a cotton (not the feel I was going for). Do know that Blossom Holness has a delightful selection of gorgeous notions, buttons and trims- so definitely check it out. Service was incredibly pleasant and as for the old, 'Chester Sewing Center' awning that still remains, Nadine is awaiting the name change that's been put in place already.
