    Black cotton $20

I bought 4 yards of plain black cotton fabric for $18 per yard.. He wanted $20 dollars per yard. I thought it was over priced just for cotton. I asked why $20 per yard? Because I was wondering what's so special about it? And was it mixed with anything? The owner repeatedly said it is high quality cotton... Nothing much else. Hmm not sure if I'll be here again since I found other places with same quality with better price. However, the staff there was very helpful and kind. He would always check up on me and help me find the right color. Which is why I left some stars.

    look how this is cut

overpriced and cut in diagonal. rush me to make decision. very bad. never come again!

They've…read morealways been one of the larger stores with a very broad assortment of sewing and design accessories--everything from hundreds of ribbons (may thousands), trims, decals, rhinestones, fabrics, supportive inner garment materials, buttons, hair/costume jewelry components, the list goes on. Agree with some other reviews in that it's one of the pricier stores though you pay for the wide variety--hard to beat their selection. The course of time hasn't been kind to local production. Back in the 1820s up until the early 1980s, when mass garment production stateside was booming in NYC, the garment district employed up to 46% of the city's industrial workforce. There was a need to design and purchase materials nearby, and the majority of Manhattan's midtown west side was dedicated to factories and design studios. Fast fwd to now, that statistic is much different and given the availability of online and global sources, not everyone needs to go into a physical store to purchase their needs. While many products have long moved to overseas sourcing, for anyone who's endeavored DIY arts and crafts, or even made any functional product by hand, it's much different seeing and feeling a material in person than on a screen. That's where in this past century, stores like M&J played a vital role in the fabric of the garment district. They are also a valuable resource to the numerous design students at FIT, Parsons, etc. During past decade many a longtime stalwart trim store have disappeared from the neighborhood and M&J is the latest casualty. If you are interested in sewing or design notions, now's your chance to pick up items at their going-out-of-business sale.

This place has been going out of business for a while, but I'm grateful it's still open. Good place…read morefor velvet ribbons and other notions.

Omg-I was honestly in heaven here!! Ever since I first saw this particular fabric store on project…read morerunway I've always wanted to go and grace their I aisles !! I can't believe it's literally three floors and row after row of fabric on every type of role there could be possible, trim, glitter, tool, leather, and vegan leather! Then don't even get me started on all the thread, buttons, and home decor! It's enough to make your head spin!! Everything is incredibly organized by section, textures and style of patterns or solids! I was thoroughly impressed and yet so overwhelmed. I spent 45 minutes, just looking at every fabric and touching everything in sight that I couldn't buy a single yard of anything!! There's a cutting station in a couple of different spot spots as well as stairs and an elevator in case you need to maneuver around, but goodness! I could live here and never get tired!! Now that I think about it, I never looked at the prices but one of the fabrics was $24 a yard. It was a soft jersey fabric, so I'm sure it was more expensive. I should've looked up more prices, but honestly, I was just so overwhelmed, and I wanted to walk through each aisle away! There were a number of employees on each floor, helping other people and restocking other fabrics. I didn't want to bother with asking any questions because I was so enchanted with the fabric store itself! I'm so happy to have graced mood fabrics presence in New York, especially since all the fabrics have gone out of business over here on the West Coast in California! I honestly cannot wait to go back and actually buy some fabric! Lol I will definitely be working on some sketches for a dress or something so I can go in to mood fabrics with a game plan besides being overwhelmed by everything! lol

The team arrived on time (actually earlier than expected which I was happy about), came fully prepared, and handled the installation with impressive precision--especially given how high and challenging the windows were to access. I wanted a lining for a skirt I have and brought it with me for reference. The shopkeeper was beyond helpful- he saved me money too! First, I picked a fabric not realizing it was expensive. It was not me but him who checked that I was willing to pay for an expensive fabric to line my not so expensive skirt. I realized he was right, and he immediately directed me towards a much cheaper fabric that would suit my purposes. Then, I asked his opinion on how many yards he thought I would need. I told him I was thinking 3 or 4, and after taking a look at my skirt, he assured me that 3 would be plenty. He easily could have sold me too many yards of a fabric that was expensive. Instead, he took the time to help me with my individual needs, and did it with a smile. I had a little trouble understanding his accent at times, but whenever I asked him to repeat himself, he was patient with me. I can't wait to start my next project, just so I can come back to this cute little jungle of bolts.

Pricing is mostly as expected, you will pay a few dollars extra per yard as opposed to some of the discount fabric stores. Personally, spending the few extra bucks at B&J is always worth the trade-off because of the smooth and well-designed experience in the store. They stock high-quality materials and I have never been disappointed in something I've purchased. This store goes the extra mile and will provide you with up to (I believe) 15 free samples per visit. Their inventory is extremely well-managed and they put a bar code/ID sticker on each fabric sample they give you. This way, the process is extremely fast when going back to the store to make purchases. The employees can simply scan the sticker from any of the samples and cut you a piece to length. The whole process seldom takes more than 5 minutes once you have decided what you want. This beats the discount stores 10/10 times in my book, because I save so much time that it warrants the slightly higher price. I have not written any reviews for fabric stores because, frankly, my experience has been nearly identical at all of them EXCEPT for B&J. Along with my fabric purchases, I was looking for bag/backpack hardware today which they do not really carry. One of the employees (did not get her name) was kind enough to hand me a printed list of other stores and recommend a couple that would have what I was looking for. She was absolutely spot on, and I got everything else I needed from the other store. I really appreciated the tip, I have not had a comparable experience or been given this level of attention/help at any other fabric shop in NYC.

All fabric clearly fresh and new, not from a poorly managed warehouse, but obviously from a neat and orderly business. Thanks y'all! I'm in SC and found you online. I used to live in NJ and Staten Island. Some NYC fabric stores don't have adequate websites, but yours is not only adequate, but excellent! The only thing I would add is: care instructions on each product page. I am mystified as to how to launder the cotton guipure lace I purchased, and I conclude that I will do dry clean only to stay way on the safe side. Thanks again!
