M&J is one of those garment district institutions that's been around for nearly 90 years. They've…read morealways been one of the larger stores with a very broad assortment of sewing and design accessories--everything from hundreds of ribbons (may thousands), trims, decals, rhinestones, fabrics, supportive inner garment materials, buttons, hair/costume jewelry components, the list goes on. Agree with some other reviews in that it's one of the pricier stores though you pay for the wide variety--hard to beat their selection. The course of time hasn't been kind to local production. Back in the 1820s up until the early 1980s, when mass garment production stateside was booming in NYC, the garment district employed up to 46% of the city's industrial workforce. There was a need to design and purchase materials nearby, and the majority of Manhattan's midtown west side was dedicated to factories and design studios. Fast fwd to now, that statistic is much different and given the availability of online and global sources, not everyone needs to go into a physical store to purchase their needs. While many products have long moved to overseas sourcing, for anyone who's endeavored DIY arts and crafts, or even made any functional product by hand, it's much different seeing and feeling a material in person than on a screen. That's where in this past century, stores like M&J played a vital role in the fabric of the garment district. They are also a valuable resource to the numerous design students at FIT, Parsons, etc. During past decade many a longtime stalwart trim store have disappeared from the neighborhood and M&J is the latest casualty. If you are interested in sewing or design notions, now's your chance to pick up items at their going-out-of-business sale.

This place has been going out of business for a while, but I'm grateful it's still open. Good place…read morefor velvet ribbons and other notions.

Omg-I was honestly in heaven here!! Ever since I first saw this particular fabric store on project…read morerunway I've always wanted to go and grace their I aisles !! I can't believe it's literally three floors and row after row of fabric on every type of role there could be possible, trim, glitter, tool, leather, and vegan leather! Then don't even get me started on all the thread, buttons, and home decor! It's enough to make your head spin!! Everything is incredibly organized by section, textures and style of patterns or solids! I was thoroughly impressed and yet so overwhelmed. I spent 45 minutes, just looking at every fabric and touching everything in sight that I couldn't buy a single yard of anything!! There's a cutting station in a couple of different spot spots as well as stairs and an elevator in case you need to maneuver around, but goodness! I could live here and never get tired!! Now that I think about it, I never looked at the prices but one of the fabrics was $24 a yard. It was a soft jersey fabric, so I'm sure it was more expensive. I should've looked up more prices, but honestly, I was just so overwhelmed, and I wanted to walk through each aisle away! There were a number of employees on each floor, helping other people and restocking other fabrics. I didn't want to bother with asking any questions because I was so enchanted with the fabric store itself! I'm so happy to have graced mood fabrics presence in New York, especially since all the fabrics have gone out of business over here on the West Coast in California! I honestly cannot wait to go back and actually buy some fabric! Lol I will definitely be working on some sketches for a dress or something so I can go in to mood fabrics with a game plan besides being overwhelmed by everything! lol

The team arrived on time (actually earlier than expected which I was happy about), came fully prepared, and handled the installation with impressive precision--especially given how high and challenging the windows were to access. The final result is absolutely stunning. The shades completely transformed the space--adding both elegance and functionality. They fit perfectly, operate smoothly, and elevate the overall look of the room in a way I didn't even anticipate. What really stood out was the attention to detail and care taken to ensure everything was installed flawlessly. The installers were respectful of my home, efficient, and clearly experienced in what they do. Highly recommend this company if you're looking for high-quality work and a beautiful end result. Worth every penny!

The second walked in, I was greeted so warmly and I knew my luggage space was in trouble. They have a great selection and amazing prices with the bottom floor having some silk blends for $4 the yard! I highly respect this place and can't wait to be back when I visit nyc.

I wanted a lining for a skirt I have and brought it with me for reference. The shopkeeper was beyond helpful- he saved me money too! First, I picked a fabric not realizing it was expensive. It was not me but him who checked that I was willing to pay for an expensive fabric to line my not so expensive skirt. I realized he was right, and he immediately directed me towards a much cheaper fabric that would suit my purposes. Then, I asked his opinion on how many yards he thought I would need. I told him I was thinking 3 or 4, and after taking a look at my skirt, he assured me that 3 would be plenty. He easily could have sold me too many yards of a fabric that was expensive. Instead, he took the time to help me with my individual needs, and did it with a smile. I had a little trouble understanding his accent at times, but whenever I asked him to repeat himself, he was patient with me. I can't wait to start my next project, just so I can come back to this cute little jungle of bolts.
