After hunting for a very particular color-changing satiny-fabric that changes color between blues, reds, and purples to match a fabric scrap I brought with me to 10+ different fabric stores, I finally found the closest thing at Fabrics Garden! There were 6 yards, and even though I originally needed just about 3 yards, they said they were willing to sell off all the yardages to me at a discount to take it off their hands, because it would be hard for them to sell any remaining yardages. We haggled, and they discounted the price from $25/yd to $22/yd for all 6 yards. Was happy with the purchase of the beautiful fabric. When I took it back, even the puppy wanted to snuggle with the fabric! I'm really happy that I found this here at Fabric Garden, and am very thankful for the helpful staff with helping me find it. read more

Fabrics Garden - Fabric Stores Near Me - New York, New York

I'm not sure why everyone seems to dislike this place so much. I ended up here because it's one of the few fabric stores in the area that's open on Sundays- a plus when you are just a hobbyist like me and only sew on the weekends. Fabrics Garden is large and has one of the biggest selections I've seen. Unlike a lot of other shops, it's quite open and well-lit, so you don't have to grope your way through dark aisles and can actually see what you're looking at. The fabrics are organized fairly logically and I was able to find what I needed quickly. (I'm sure the employees would have helped me, too, but I like to peruse myself and they did not hover too much.) I got some very decent silk for $15/yd, so I think the prices here are quite fair. The gentleman who cut the fabric for me (likely the owner) was helpful and also pulled down some other stuff for me to take reference photos of for later. Will return. read more

I do not like businesses that will intently deceive you to make a sale. Today i went into Fabric Garden looking for 100% black silk jersey fabric. I was instantly greeted by a storekeeper who ushered me to where the fabric was located. He then tried to sell me something that clearly was not authentic silk jersey (the drape was too stiff and it had way too much shine). I did not appreciate the fact that i had to re-assure the guy that the black silk jersey knit that he was pushing was not authentic. He then walked away, and had another staff member help me. Same scenario, but this time after going back and forth with you're right, I'm wrong, he laughed and finally admitted: "Ha-ha, you're right. Wow, you know your fabrics; which is good!" Then he tried to sell me a different color that was a different quality (authentic silk jersey). I refused and left the store. Leaving the store, it made me wonder at what price would they have sold me that silk jersey they tried to pass as authentic? At any rate, I refuse to do business with anyone who are liars, and deceptive with their products they try to sell as genuine. Advice:if you are looking for a specific fabric, shop around and compare prices and qualities esp. if you are unfamiliar with textiles. This fabric shop has some great prices, but there is a reason they're able to offer such deals: much of the fabric is trash. I recently purchased some wool there for a winter coat. Upon delivering the wool to my tailor, he held the fabric in his hands and gave it a tug. It ripped apart in his hands fairly easily. This was clearly a sign that it was of poor quality, and my tailor said I should return it. When I attempted to return the fabric, I was greeted with hostility by the store manager. He even went so far as to say that "of course it will rip if you tug on it really hard." I proceeded to rip it with my own hands in front of him, and yet was ultimately refused a refund. I ventured into store with my friend to pick up some interface. They have really good quality interface here for a cheap price buuuuuuut the guy that cut it for us was pretty creepy. We were talking a little with him until he got on the topic of boyfriends with my friend. I think he was joking but he kinda went too far by grabbing my friend and pulling her close to him which creeped her out. We didn't want to come back but we needed more interface and this was the only place we know where to get some good interface for cheap. The 2nd time we came back we made sure another guy was there to ask him to cut the fabric for us. He was nice and he kept calling us 'sistah' and we made sure he was around so the other guy won't get creepy on us again. Overall, it wasn't that bad as long as 'brothah' is around. The fabric quality here is good but it's a little bit on the expensive side for poor students like us. They are willing to give discounts though and you can bargain and push the price less than 50% of the original. That is, if you know how to bargain (my friend does). read more

I bought quite a bit of fabric at this store, paid $345 for it. When I shipped fabric to California and unpacked it, I realized that 3 yards piece of stretchy silk charmeuse had a lot of damage from hard pulls stretches, and the other 2 pieces of charmeuse have stains on them. When I tried to call the store, the guy who picked up pretended he can't hear me. I tried to call again - same story. I emailed them with pictures of damages attached and my email bounced. So, based on my experience, I'm going to stay away from this store in the future. If you do decide to shop there, be extra cautious and watch carefully for what it is they are cutting and packing for you! read more

Aside from these workers laughing at me upon entering my their store, I purchased $15/yard French terry cloth. After arriving to my studio to work on a project, i unfold my fabric and discover that there is a HUGE piece cut out from what i assume was swatching or something. I measured the fabric and was only given one yard without compensation to the +1/4 yard x 25inch panel that was cut from the piece. There is also a yellow stain, rendering 1/4 yard of the 1 yard that i paid for, useless. I realize I didn't buy much this trip but that seems pretty unethical, especially at that price point. After reading their reviews on this business, I guess I was in for it. I give the store 2 stars because they do have a wide variety of fabrics Just beware and do a burn test on anything they tell you is wool or silk and Inspect everything before you buy. read more

We went to Fabrics Garden to find the perfect material for my daughter's pageant dress and we found it here!! They have large selection of wonderful fabrics. They also have a dress designer, Maria Marzilli who was enthusiastic and knowledgeable about the fabrics. She helped us select the perfect material for our dress and made wonderful suggestions for the design. I will definitely come here again in the near future. read more

No stars, but one star because they make you give at least one. The guy that runs this place is an actual thief. Avoid at all costs. Made sure to be very clear on the price before my material was cut, then the guy went ahead and charged me more per yard than we had just agreed upon! I told him, 'excuse me, you just told me the price was [x].' and he denied us ever having the conversation! He then started shouting, calling me a liar, and saying I was trying to rob him. Excellent for dressy Colors, Selection, Price & Advice: I shopped at 13 Garment District and suburban fabric stores looking for Mother of the Bride dress fabrics in lace and chiffon. I loved B&Js, but even they only had winter dark tones for an early September wedding. I was desperate for pretty colored fabric. Then on 8th Ave., between 37th-38th, I bumped into the far less fancy than B&Js - NY Elite shop. Elite it is not, it is more like an Indian, Arab or African marketplace, where the diverse workers had walls crowded with rich, gorgeous and beaded colors in formal fabrics. I was then sent to the main store - FABRICS GARDEN - a larger, similar experience, and found tons of selection, including 5 choices of royal blue silk chiffon from Italy. PLUS, they have an unmatched asset - a remarkable Costume Designer - Maria 0 who is there daily free of charge, to advise on design and materials. She was a fantastic find!! I never would have known to choose light color liner fabric for tonal richness and nude spandex under the lace without MARIA. They had everything I needed and at the BEST prices. Ask for the lovely MIZAN - who is wonderful by email too. He let me know exactly what was in stock in advance so I didn't waste my trips. If you are a person who can deal with the adventure of a foreign marketplace experience, along with some bizarre customers, then FABRICS GARDEN is a true find, and Maria a marvel. While I was there she had a steady flow of customers to design and sew dresses for, including brides, mothers of brides, Broadway theater, Venice Carnivale and other interesting clientele. This is probably the biggest fabric shop in the district and while I was wowed by their grand selection, it can be a bit overwhelming because they have so much to offer. They are distinct for they carry their more print cotton fabrics than most other stores. I remember buying denim from them years ago. Their print fabric is a little pricey from $8-$12 a yard but as far as I know, they have a bigger selection. I got the pretty Imperial floral Robert Kaufman fabric. Granted there was a great fabric selection but nothing had a price tag which really annoys me! My friend that was with me said that that just means the price is negotiable. Go figure. When I tried this to negotiate, the guy started talking really fast & asked me to name a price according to how much I would buy. I said $5 per yard for 4 yds of a striped knit. He said $10. Dude that's not a 'good deal'! There were better prices at other stores. I was visiting from Chicago so I had plenty of time to visit a lot of stores in NYC. This is by far the best fabrics store on the block. I've being shopping at this store for over 8 years and was never disappointed. I will go to the other so called "big fabrics stores" but don't find what i need, but whenever i go to FABRICS GARDEN I always find what i need. The new staff is really helpful and the boss really approachable. The have great selection and great price, but you just have to negotiate. You will always get a better price for great fabric quality compare to the other "Fancy fabrics stores". read more

great fabrics. but watch it! the guy tried to charge me $8 for 11yds of standard $2 tulle. First, he cut the wrong number of yards. Then, at the register he quoted me $98. I was like WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT. He proceeded to tell me that what I got was a higher quality tulle (which was certainly not true). I have purchased from there before. He was rude and told me I had to CALM DOWN when I started to get agitated. He said "I already cut it. I told you $8 a yd" He certainly did NOT. I finally talked to the nice man in charge and he said to charge me the $2 price. I have shopped here MANY times. I usually have a friendly exchange with the cutters but this guy was pissing me off. He is the same man who quoted me $65 per yd for a beaded lace. I said OK i need ONE yard. He says "OK. here i'll give you a yard and a half". Me, assuming he meant as a nice gesture. He charged me for the extra 1/2 yard I didn't ask for!!!! I ended up paying so much more for a fabric I only needed a small amount of. BE CAREFUL!!! read more

They helped me so much.. So friends and gave me a great price for my pageant dress. They are very nice and friendly. They have an in house designer whos makes beautiful dresses. They have nice laces in silks and stuff. Kinda expensive but worth it because they have custom laces u wont find many places. I dnt know about these nasty comments but i like them. I didn't want to give fabrics garden any stars but I had to in order to comment. This is the worst fabric store I ever been to. They sold me a material with stains and did not want to refund me my money. The Indian short guy with glasses was very rude and put his hands in both me and my boyfriends face and was cursing at us. The Indian guy with glasses and the elderly Indian man told us to get the fuck out of their store. I don't understand how ppl run a business talking to people with no form of respect. There is a great selection of fabrics. The employees are very helpful and even Suggest the best materials for sewing projects. They are very informative about fabrics and they even have a designer who specailizes in costumes designs and wedding dresses.
