Only yarn store in Manhattan selling yarn by Caron, Red Heart, and Lion brands. Cashier is friendly and helpful if you ask. Only uptown yarn store. Yarn is on second floor. I've been a few times and will go again. It's great when you want to actually see the colors and feel the yarn. And yarn is reasonably priced. This store has reasonable prices but the fabric is not the best. It's not as organized as it should be and labeling for each of the fabric does not help a beginner who is buying anything. The guys that cut your fabric for you are very pleasant but both of the cashier women are kind of rude. There's an upstairs for crafters and the cashiers upstairs are very pleasant and helpful. I always try to stop by whenever I'm in the area! They have 2 floors. The 1st is fabrics, thread, patterns and notions while the 2nd is arts and crafts. The fabrics here are a lot cheaper compared to other fabric stores (and especially compared to the stores down in the fashion district). The prices for some of the fabrics are even cheaper than the fabric stores in my neighborhood (and the fabric stores in my neighborhood is usually the cheapest). There's a variety of fabrics and they're great quality, but at the same time there's a chance that you won't be able to find exactly what you're looking for. But other that, the selection is very decent! They even got patterns too! Butterick patterns! And they're really easy to understand! Grab one to practice if you're new to sewing! The craft section upstairs have a huge variety of stuff and super spacious! The downside is the staff. It seems like whenever I visit, the staff aren't as attentive or in a foul mood. I feel that's something they should really improve on. You don't need to be Bffs with customers but at least try to be attentive and give them a positive experience! read more

I was hunting around for fabric stores and I stumbled across this one. My friend has dragged me to soho/chinatown fabric stores before and while Save A Thon doesn't have as many different selections as the ones in soho/chinatown, Save A Thon is inexpensive and I found everything I needed for my project. The people who work there are very friendly, though sometimes it takes a while for them to come cut the fabric for you because there are usually about 2 people working the store. Outside the store they have $1/yd fabric they are getting rid of, pretty sweet. I got a combined total of 12 yards of fabric in diff materials and colors and the grand total came out to $40. That is pretty good if you ask me since my friend spent $6/yd for fabrics down in Jem Fabrics. read more

Sav-A-Thon was recommended to me by a friend for repair of my sewing machine. I was about to ship it across country to an authorized dealer but called them instead. They are busy with sales, but very accommodating both on the phone and in person. They gave me a quote for cleaning it and stuck with that price. My machine was fixed on the day promised and I picked it right up. So far it works beautifully. I haven't tried out everything (like the embroidery attachment) but the problem I had just getting a straight stitch is gone. I'd definitely recommend them..! read more

I was very disappointed when I went, there was not cotton fabrics with designs on them. It was very scarce. Years ago there used to be so many cotton fabrics to choose from, so not sure if Covid has to do with it or poor management. But it does have a lot of yarn and crafting things. a really cool fabric store in east harlem on 3rd ave and 105th st that sells a endless supply of fabrics that along with a sewing machine and a little skill will make you a home personal designer. the main floor is all the fabrics , sewing machines , acessories and in the back of the store is where the expert gives lessons on how to make magic on the sewing machine. upstairs was my favorite secti9n as it has a bunch of homegoods and plenty of other cool arts and craftys stuff. what was just a 10 minute visit to pick up some fabrics for my goddaughter turned into a 30 minute browse around and i enjoyed the extra 20 minutes . good prices , nice helpful workers and really cool fabrics in east harlem made a errand into a fun trip. read more

I used to be jealous of the little old ladies knitting and crocheting on the train. I wasn't jealous because I wanted to be able to knit and crochet (indeed, I'm a crafty gal who knows how to do these things). Rather, I was all, "I want your acrylic yarn! I'm not motivated or rich enough to take care of fancy schmancy wool and I'm allergic! Three cheers for yarn that's machine washable!" Thus, for years, because NYC lacked suburban staple craft stores like Walmart, Joann, Michael's or Hobby Lobby, I either ended up ordering my Red Heart and Bernat online, or crossing my fingers that an Alphabet City dollar store would have a few skeins. Then, I learned about Save-A-Thon, and I've been crocheting and knitting blankies and scarves like an old lady ever since. The first floor of Save-A-Thon's East Harlem location (or Upper upper east side for all you yuppies) is almost entirely sewing stuff, with some sale items and holiday specials thrown in there. I don't sew, so I can only tell you that their prices look to be much more reasonable than some of the ridiculous fabric stores in Soho/LES. However, you may be able to get similar prices and a bigger selection in the garment district. But look, I'm here for the yarn. I come in and stock up on Caron and Bernat, occasionally picking up a few skeins of some fancier brushed mohair for pretty scarves. While I have not been to the recently opened Michael's on the UWS, I can say that Save-a-Thon has the best prices I've seen for yarn in years. The second floor also has some other crafting kits (wood stuff, soapmaking, latch hook), but I've got to dock a star because there didn't seem to be cross-stitch kits anywhere, and that dampened my spirits just a little bit. I'm willing to forgive them, though, and return the star, because I love the people who work here, and the owner (maybe owners?) seem to be around the store a lot. There's none of that pretentious snobby yarn boutique nonsense (I almost got laughed out of Gotta Knit! for mentioning Lion Brand). Also, Save-a-Thon stores throughout NYC give different types of classes--this location seems to hold a lot of cake decorating classes. This place has awesome prices for fabric! They have a lot of accessories too for sewing. I also crochet and have been here to pick up yarn! Also great prices! What's amazing is that they have these great warehouse sales once in a blue and the prices are crazy cheap! Can't wait for that! The place can be a bit overwhelming at first but all you need to do is ask for help. First floor is fabric and sewing. Second floor is crocheting and cake making and other crafts. This place doesn't get enough credit. There aren't many craft stores in Manhattan. Wish they would open more locations (like maybe one on 125th Street! ;-) They even have free classes at their different locations! I'm heading to the free sewing class! They're way less expensive than fabric stores in the Bronx, downtown Brooklyn and Queens. The people who work here are friendly and really helpful. Usually I really love save a ton for it's prices and often try to support local businesses in my neighborhood over larger chains . However today's experience was pretty shitty , I got there around 6:54 and the doors were locked despite the hours on the actual doors and online saying open until 7 pm. Since I work downtown until 6 -6:15 pm I wasn't voluntarily showing up that close to closing . And in fact took an 23$ Uber from above union square to make sure I can get there before 7. So I get there( before closing time) and the doors were locked . I wait until I see someone inside and called the store , I explained to the woman who answered that what I needed was behind the front counter and I wasn't there to browse. She cuts me off and yells "IT DOESNT MATTER WERE CLOSED GO AWAY " so I ask her why it says open until 7 if she's going to shut the doors early and she yells "GOODBYE" and hangs up on me. I could have just stayed downtown and went to mood or somewhere else in the garment district to save the headache of being mis treated by a business I went out of my way to support closer to home . Also a side note , the reason why I needed an item from there in the first place was because the item I bought from them was NOT what was advertised on the packaging . As if some of the product was taken out and repackaged . This is the third time this has happened and usually I over look it but please ppl save your money and time and just buy from a company that doesn't have shitty customer service. read more

Bought a $175 for $100 yelp deal for Save A Thon Stores. I shopped at the East Harlem location. The staff was incredibly patient while I meticulously spent down my voucher (you must spend it in one visit). This is my all-time favorite place to shop for fabric. They carry very inexpensive home decorator fabrics and some decent apparel fabrics. It is my go-to store for Halloween costume supplies. I never miss a Warehouse Sale. The only downside is that the classes are held in the back of the store which is a little grubby. Unfortunately the open house I attended was facilitated by a not so well-versed 'teacher'. I went to their sewing open house on Saturday, I found out that they have beginners and advanced sewing classes for a $15/hour ( $ 150 for 5 weeks). I sat in the class for a while. The students were making pants from a commercial pattern which was cool. As a designer and DIYer, I am always looking for chic and inexpensive fabric and notions for my projects. I use to shop for my fabric on Fashion Ave near Times Square until I discovered Save-A-Thon. They have crepe jersey, poplin, knits, twill, African prints etc. for 1/3 of the price of other fabric stores. I am a very selective and picky customer, I am very vocal about the level of customer service that I received. The staff at Save-A-Thon are friendly, helpful and patience. I was in the store today for more than 2 hours today looking for fabric. I constantly changed my mind about my fabric selection, while at the cutter table mind you and they were still awesome to me. The man even came from behind the counter to help me find stretch fabric. They try very hard to pleasure the customer here. Oh! they have replica fabric similar to Stella McCarthney's Spring 2013 collection. Oh! the notions department is dope! Recently visited this location in Harlem. The prices are very good. But the selection is lacking-kind of hit or miss. I do recommend you stop by and see what catches your eye. I was looking for material for a dress and found nothing that caught my eye. But the have some nice selection just wish they had more variety. Did get a few odds and ends but nothing that I was looking for the projects I'm currently looking to start. The upstairs is mainly crafts. They also have some nice Wilton products but again I didn't find what I needed. Pros: -Prices -Great place to browse. The other reviews on here scream FAKE. This place was a total disappointment. I came in here for four (4) buttons for my wool coat. This run down establishment bragged of cheap, shiny polyester and nylon fabrics strewn all over the racks--lots of it. The button section was about 2 feet wide by 3 feet tall. Gaudy, impractical buttons with glitter and stripes. NO plain black buttons, or white for that matter. I ventured upstairs, hoping there would be more stock to choose from. Wrong. Just more cheap fabric, sparse items scattered about, half-stocked shelves...and more cheap fabric. I came to this place for one of their workshops, it was not too bad. Of course the workshop is free so really limited and they are basically just trying to sell you some more stuff, lessons or fabric. The fabric is really cheap for the starting prices and they have a lot of choice. Service was not really great, but oh well. They have a lot of space - hence the choice. They also have promotional offers for specific leftover fabrics outside the shop. Would probably come back to one of their shops if I needed more fabric. read more

I love this place. I needed to pick up a few things for my cosplays for Comic Con and it was really difficult to leave without getting more than I had gone there for. This is definitely my favourite fabric store in Manhattan! My 'must-go' place every weekend! I am not ashamed to say that I have just started learning how to sew at the age of 30, and Save-A-Thon is seriously a lifesaver for an amateur like me who is very afraid of 'wasting' fabrics during my practices! From cotton fabrics starting from $1.99 (per yard), and stretchy fabrics starting from $3.99 (per yard), one can definitely purchase tons of fabrics without burning a hole in their pocket! Also, do keep an eye out for their clearance sales! Discounts can be up to 70%! The one tip I would share is, if you have any questions or is looking for something in particular, look for Mr Kane (store manager, I believe). He is friendly and very knowledgeable. The one reason why I am not giving a full 5 star is because, other than Mr Kane, the rest of the staff often look like they really don't want to be there, and depending on their mood, their service quality is never consistent. I've shopped at Save a Thon for years even before the El Barrio neighborhood became" Upper Yorkville." I recommend it for its fabrics and craft supplies. Once, I even found several yards of "Pierre Frey" designer fabric that normally costs over $150/ yard at just $1/yard... just because the remnants had a couple of waters stains (they disappeared with a good washing haha). Look at the main supplies as well as the bins with remnants; you will find great bargains. read more

This is a great place for odds and ends for your sewing and crafting projects, but I personally wouldn't come here looking for anything specific. The fabric quality offered is on the low end of the spectrum. I went there just looking for plain black canvas fabric and they didn't have any. The upstairs area is where all the baking and crafting supplies are. I was baking a last minute cake and they did have an inexpensive Wilton baking pan on sale. I will probably only get a couple more uses out of it. They do offer inexpensive sewing lessons in the back of the store which I may take advantage of in the very near future. read more
