This is your basic cute little neighborhood fabric/craft store. It's remarkably clean and well-lit inside, a nice change from having to paw through piles of poorly-marked fabric in dim corners. They're rarely busy from what I've seen, and will let you browse without hovering over your shoulder. In addition to your basic clothing and home decorating fabrics, they have a variety of notions and craft supplies - some yarn, thread, hot glue guns, googly eyes, velcro, ribbon, sewing scissors, seam rippers... I only have two complaints. First, they only sell fabric by the yard - or at least, they did when I tried to buy a quarter of a yard of white vinyl for a project. Now I have lots of extra white vinyl. Second, their hours are somewhat...erratic. They're not open Saturdays. Sometimes I walk by when they're supposed to be open (say, 2pm on a Sunday), but they're closed. A little more reliability would be welcome. Overall, a very handy local alternative to trekking to the garment district. read more

This place has awful customer service. My husband and I walked over there on a Sunday around 11 am (sign says the store opens at 11am on sundays) but the store was closed. I looked it up online once I got home and a read a review stating how it's always close. I called around 2pm and a gentleman picked up. I asked what time the store is open til and he said unitl 4pm. I went over there for the second time that day to buy a few military patches. When I arrived at 3:10, the store was again closed. I called while standing outside and the man said he will be right there to open the front door. I was taking my time picking out a patch and the man came to me to say: 'are you buying something because I am closing up' -- IT WAS 3:15!!! read more

Half of the store was sewing supplies, and the other half knitting. LOADS of basics including wool, cottons, felt, and suiting. The usual craft prints and some outdoor/furniture upholstering fabric. Not too many cool prints, though. Every notion and supply one can think of... wasn't quite sure about the prices since there weren't any clear signs and sometimes the fabric covered the cardboard where the prices were written in marker. The old man who ran the store seemed like he took pride and knowledge in fabrics and his store. Just. One. Thing..... upon entering the store, it hit me like a truck. I don't know why but it smelled like poo. Like a dirty diaper that was placed on top of a heater in dry heat. By the time I was 1/3 of the way through the store, my stomach was starting to clench and I just gave up on looking and left the store. Maybe someone stepped on something and trekked around the store in it. I'll definitely revisit though, and hopefully that was a one-time-deal. read more

NEVER AGAIN!!! I can't give this a 0 star but this place deserves to be outed for his HORRIBLE business practices. A few days ago I went into the store and found some fabric. The bolt said $6.99/Sale $4.99. I took it to he front and as he began cutting he said, $6.99/yard. I told him, "the bolt says $4.99/yard." He then became belligerent and yelled, "No, $6.99!!! I didn't write that. It's not even my handwriting. I won't make any $." I responded, "Well I didn't write it and it's not my fault. But you should honor what is written." He yanked the fabric away and said, "No!" Other customers were there and they said nothing. I was humiliated. I left. I told a friend who called from another state and told the owner the customer should always be right and he should honor that price. The man agreed and said he would. My friend then paid for the fabric over the phone with a credit card. I arrived moments ago to pick up my fabric. He said, "your friend's card didn't work. I tried 3 times..." I said, "ok. I'll pay." The total was more than expected. I read the receipt. "Wait, why are you still charging men$6.99/yard? We've been through this. You agreed to $4.99." "No! I didn't. I'm not going through this with you again. Get out. I don't want to sell to you." Again, customers were in the store and again, no one said anything. Despite me explaining what was written and displayed. I don't want to say it's because I'm a black woman, but it's frustrating to always be treated less than and to have people just stand by and say nothing. read more

My cousin and I walk in looking for a specific item. The attendant asks us if we need help. She asked for the item and he flat out without hesitation said, "They don't make that." Her response was to pull out the package she JUST bought a couple of days ago. He then states, "We don't carry it." How pathetic to lie about something so small. If you would like to be scowled at and treated like dirt, then you have found the place. I have received terrible customer service here before, but having worked in customer service for years I thought I'd give it another try. I get it, sometimes people have off days. But this time was the final straw. I walked in, looked around and approached the owner (who was reading a magazine) to ask a question. "Excuse me, do you...." "NO... WE DON'T DO NOTHING.... Went here yesterday with my friend on her birthday week to find a sheet. We were the only ones inside and the man looked tense, as we asked a couple of questions and finally get to the register, he cuts the piece and upon pay realize we're a dollar short and tell him we'll come back. He immediately gets angry and yells at us that we "wasted my time" and said how "I couldn't have cut that" when we clearly SAID WERE GONNA COME BACK. I felt hurt and apologized and once we got outside I was near tears, and my friend consoled me saying that it was alright. Never again will I come to a store, to be disrespected, its wrong to treat potential customers with disrespect especially after explaining themselves. Sir you are mean!!!! read more

This place is what I imagine all stores used to be like before the big box store came into being. That's not a bad thing, but yes, it's a little disorganized, no there's no one greeting you at the door, and no, they might not have everything you could want. But as someone just getting back into knitting and not wanting to shell out $15 for a skein of yarn to practice on, this is definitely a place I'll be returning to. They have a rather large selection of basic yarns, from cotton to the softer, more expensive stuff. And I picked up 4 skeins for about $32. Not bad. The guy at the front was perfectly pleasant, so I didn't have any customer service issues, but I could see how the inconsistent operating hours could be confusing. If you're looking for crafting supplies but don't want to pay an arm and a leg or trek all the way up to the UWS for Michaels, definitely come here. read more

I live close to the store and like to occasionally make sewing projects. Having finally made it to the store I regret that I did not do so sooner! I found all the little knickknacks I needed to make a complicated dance costume. (There was only one very specific trim I went to M&J in NYC for, but the base fabric, all the threads in the particular colors I needed were all available at D&R, which was amazing!) friendly service. They'll cut a fabric to measure if that's what you need and they have great advisory side notes and suggestions for new designers/sewers. read more

I am not into sewing or embroidery. I just went to this store because my mother needed some simple ribbon to decorate her chairs. Little did we know that we would have the worst customer experience in all our 14 years living in NYC! My mother of 70, with limited economical means, would of course look for non-expensive ribbon. We asked the owner about a ribbon she liked and he said it was $2.99 a yard. She needed 5 yards, so it sounded a little expensive. After looking for less than a couple minutes through the shelves, full of dusty ribbon rolls on top of each-other, with no visible prices, we found another one she liked. At that moment, the owner came and in a rude tone said: "Listen! You can't touch the merchandise! You are here to buy, you must ask me, no touching!" Well, no way to see the prices without touching, and we carefully touched only three rolls, while kneeling on the floor. He deserved a response as rude as his words, but instead, I didn't react at all and pointed to the ribbon we liked, saying "Ok, how much is this?" It was under a dollar and we bought it. Maybe because he didn't get the response he deserved, maybe because the owner is used to yell at the women in his life and they start shaking from fear and we didn't, maybe... who knows why, but he got very angry. Unfortunately, we didn't realize it, so we went to take a look at some pillows for my daughter this time. I was surprised to see non standard size pillows and since there were no prices on them either, I didn't touch them, instead I asked him about the price. He was talking to another customer. He turned my way and in a very ironic voice said "They are VERY EXPENSIVE! You can't afford them!" I asked him "Sir, are you ok?! I'm just asking for the price" and he said "They are not for you. Get out of here and stop giving me your garbage!" The customer talking to him was shocked and told him "She is just asking for the price. This was so rude! I'm not buying anything from here!" And she left. Of course, I also lost my cool. I told him he was an idiot and we left too. I am sorry for this long review. I am a person who doesn't like complaining in general, but I wanted to say that in this very deverse community, we represent our background and our countries with what we do and with how we act. And that man, with that kind of behavior today, made a very, very bad representation of his country. God help the people that live in the same house with such a rude, inconsiderate, disrespectful, narrow minded, ignorant "businessman". read more
