Service and product is great! My friend and I arrived early and the store wasn't open yet; however the owner opened up for us and invited us in. I don't know much about yarn, crocheting or knitting, but the owner was extremely helpful and very friendly. Her selection of yarn is beautiful, plus she offers hooks, needles, cases etc. She is very very talented and it shows in her work and her professionalism. Called the store today regarding a knitting question... Barbara was pretty rude. She told me that they were having a trunk show today and that she couldn't help me now which I understood... The next question was - was the yarn purchased there... I told her that it was purchased long before her store opened but that I would gladly pay for instructions.... Its sad that the only criteria to shop at her store was for me to purchase yarn there... I also told. her that I would make a yarn purchase but she was not interested... Let me start with basics. Me? I'm Not a knitter by any accord. My wife? She is though, and I go places with her, all the time. I am, however, a nerd. Big Time, and I am intimately familiar with certain types of behavior and I'm afraid I found it at The Knitting place. You know that feeling you get when you walk into a place and you know you're not welcome? Ya. that's the one. That's what we got, as soon as we walked in the door. I felt, as soon as we walked in, like I was walking into someone else's bedroom/den, and it was apparent we weren't welcome-that oh yes, they'd *talk* to us, sure..but it would be sort of inconvenient to them and annoying, and we should feel sorry for interrupting their oh-so important work. I searched on line for a hard to find yarn. The Knitting Place had it and I ordered late afternoon on a Monday. The yarn was in my mailbox on Thursday before noon. Now that's fast! They're in New York and I'm in California. They processed and mailed it out and it arrived in less than three days. I'd call that 5 star service. read more

So Very Disappointed! No idea at all as to what customer service is, I have gone there a few times with girlfriends. It's embarrassing how they always made me feel as if I have offended them, there doing me a favor, while I'm choosing yarn and than they taking my money. It's a sin,they have no common sense. Port Washington is a great town. I myself don't live there, but I'm a constant visitor because my daughter lives there, my trainer is there and, of course, The Knitting Place is there. "It" happened the first week in May - "It" was totally unexpected and surprised me beyond belief! I had just completed my workout and was on my way home, when I passed The Knitting Place, a little shop tucked away in a small row of other small shops, hardly noticeable at all. I suddenly found myself parked directly in front of that particular shop, as if some unknown force caused my car to turn. I sat for a moment and thought to myself, "What the heck am I doing here?" But then, I had an epiphany. I realized that I had needed a boost in my life, but wasn't quite sure what form that boost might take. "Knitting may be the answer!" I thought. "O.K," I said to myself, "Here goes nothing!" I admit that the first thought that went through my mind when I walked towards the door was, "Boy, I hope you don't have to be "dressed" to walk into this shop!" Remember. I had just come from working out -- I was hot and sweaty, and definitely not looking my best. As I hesitantly opened the door, I was overwhelmed by the sight of riotous colors of yarn overflowing their shelves...yarn stuffed into baskets, yarn, hanging from hooks...finished projects on hangers, others laying across loveseats... and yet others being worked on at a large table in the center of the room. I blinked, and when I opened my eyes, I SAW "IT! " THE ENDLESS POSSIBILITIES OF WHAT I COULD CREATE! I felt right at home, literally sighed with relief and announced, "I think I need to lean how to knit!" I have been knitting for about nine months now. I've created over thirty-five great projects with no plans to stop in the near future. The heroes of my story are the shop owner, Dina, who is as gracious as she is sweet, and who is also a knitting maven extraordinaire; and Joan, Pam, and Irene, who know all there is to know and who are wonderful. I highly recommend The Knitting Place in Port Washington. Both Pam and Dina are helpful beyond words. I recently started lessons and am already knitting up a storm. They are incredibly helpful and encouraging. They take their time to explain things and make me feel welcome and part of the "knitting family". If I could give this place 0 stars, I would. This place is incredibly racist. Like early 1900s racist. C'mon, ladies, it's 2014. Have you never met an Asian person before with an accent? They have a promotion where they claim free help as long as you buy their yarn and their patterns, fine. Loads of yarn was bought along with a book of their patterns. Yes, at first free help was received, but slowly, day by day... There were dirty looks, rude and snarky comments about ethnicity- not directed to me, but I was sitting RIGHT there, and suddenly I had to pay for lessons? What happened to "free help"? I've been there numerous times and even though I maybe the first waiting in line for help, I was always the last one helped. I thought I had found the perfect yarn store, but this place is the furthest thing from that. I can't believe people like this still exist in the world. Please find a different yarn store. Really. OH- and if that doesn't get you, they're really pushy when it comes to buying stuff in the store. Worst kinds of sales people. read more

I started private lessons with Pam a few weeks ago and love the store and its staff. The store does get very busy, but Pam is very prudent about time spent during the lesson focused on teaching me the skills I need to move forward in my project. I started with a pattern I already had and yarn I already had. I was not pressured to buy anything at all. During my lesson, I realized I would not have enough yarn to complete my project. Pam encouraged me to keep my yarn and tried to brainstorm ways to make it work with my existing yarn and pattern by altering the stitches a bit, but in the end, I decided to purchase a new skein of yarn. I had taken a private lesson at another nearby shop and was very disappointed. I'm so grateful to have found a warm and welcoming local yarn shop. If you need a lot of specific help with a project, it's best to purchase lessons as the store does get busy. They are very reasonable for a private one-on-one lesson. As per the previous negative review on here and claims of discrimination, as an Asian-American, I have never felt discriminated against in the store. On the contrary, from every interaction on the phone and in person, Dina and her staff have always been warm and welcoming. read more

I went to the Knitting Place today with a treasured pot holder. I explained repeatedly to staff I had purchased it over 40 years ago at a midwest garage sale and it is my favorite pot holder. I was looking for help learning how it was made so I might be able to duplicate it. An employee/owner? asked another person (employee/customer?) to help me. This person examined it for a minute. Then without asking if it was ok with me, she unraveled part of the pot holder, gave me an overview of what I'd need to duplicate it and then handed me back my now damaged item. Others in the place verified it was very difficult to produce & I should take care of it. NO ONE offered to repair the damage. AVOID this place at all cost unless you are a skilled knitter or don't value your possessions. read more

The best knitting store on Long Island! I've only been knitting for a few years and have become a knit-aholic...With Dina's elegant taste and skills, i knit a Chuppah (wedding canopy) for my son's wedding which is now a family heirloom. I do not go anywhere without something in my bag to knit. I even knit while walking down the street and believe it or not, in the dentist's chair. Upon walking in the door of the Knitting Place, one is always greeted with a warm, friendly welcome. They are always ready to help and are extremely patient. This is a response to Judy K's review. I am also Asian and I have brought my Asian friends here. They are not racist at all. What I believe you experienced is a busy store. They are trying to accomodate customers who know exactly what they want and simply are there to purchase yarn or patterns and leave. Simultaneously they are trying to help people but there is a limit to what can be done to help someone. If you need real lessons then you need to sign up for that which will give you dedicated time and attention. This store has so many loyal customers and the line you experience can attest to that. If this store was as aweful as you state, how would they ever stay in business? There are many different levels of knitters and this place is so proficient - good luck to you trying to find another place like this. The only part of your complaint I agree with is how busy they are. This only solidifies how special this store is. When you get your turn, they treat you as if you are the only person in the room! Be patient and enjoy the knitting and while you are waiting your turn, look around at all the beautiful projects you can do next. Not only is the management nice, the customers are equally nice and conversing with the person sitting next to you will find new friends and maybe they can help you with your knitting. It is not a place you can expect to blow in and out of. The environment is like a friendly family who care about your projects and your life, if you give it a chance.
