I received a gift card for CookUnity. First order went okay - food was fine. Second order was a disaster. NYC's first big snow had been predicted for days to start on Sunday. My order was scheduled for Monday delivery by 4pm. Tuesday morning I received an email that the delivery was postponed to that day. I contacted customer service twice, 3:30 and 6:30, asking to cancel the order and receive a credit. No response. The attempted delivery was after 8pm and I refused it. Because of the storm this food was most probably prepared before the weekend. I believe paying $76 for 5-6 day old food is wrong and unprofessional for a "fresh" food business. Plus it was out of refrigeration for many hours before they attempted to give it to me. This does not seem to be proper food handling. Think about the consequences this could lead to. The fact that I've been Yelping for so long about places like fast food joints should hint that I am not exactly a good cook... or that I even cook at all. Mind you it's not just for me... I am shameless and order extra so that I can "cook" for the special person in my life. I even go so far as to "prepare a lunch" which is just a cookunity box with a little note from me to personalize it... It's the thought that counts! Plus the food is better than I'll ever make...Don't you judge me! There are so many interesting dishes! They even have protein only plates that have two servings of protein. This is great because I don't usually eat an entire meal in one sitting and can often halve one of my vegetarian dishes and then pack up the other half with a piece of protein for another meal. Frugal! The cost seems like a lot if you cook, especially if you cook intelligently. But like I said, I don't do any of that. I usually spend over the cost for lunch and for sure for dinner, so the cost breakdown is pretty good. Especially because these meals are healthier than what I usually get... if I get a mixed bag salad and pair it with my cookunity dish I am eating well! It is not a calorie cutting service though... I also don't trust the calorie counts listed. Some seem wayyyyyyyy off. So if you are strict on that kind of thing then this might not be for you. Delivery was on time, website is easy to navigate, and I like how they give you visibility into your past orders because it makes it easy to reorder dishes you liked if you can't remember the exact name or chef. Dishes naturally vary in taste and portion size, but generally I found them to be good to excellent and filling across the board. Much more so than Factor imo. And significantly better macros. Faves: 1. Mexican Shrimp & Chorizo Paella with jalapeño cream sauce - absolutely fabulous, so much flavor, somehow nailed the soccarat despite being a ready made meal 2. Soy ginger roasted chicken with wonton noodles and bok choy - just really yummy flavor, noodles were a good consistency, not gummy at all 3. Turmeric & Tamarind Glazed Salmon with rice and roasted zucchini - not the most exciting meal but the salmon was fabulous Dislikes: 1. Chicken in Mole Poblano - chicken was dry and the mole was not good at all 2. Chili-Roasted Shrimp with fresh corn grits - shrimp was good but overall it was just such a heavy meal. I admit, I caved after seeing so many ads on Instagram and they were running a pretty big discount. After the first shipment, I've been using Cook Unity for almost a month, and so far it's been a better option than Factor (and seems 'fresher'). I also like that the delivery is a hand off vs just having the driver drop at the mailroom (avoiding stolen deliveries). The Good: -The meals (so far) have been extremely tasty and well packed. Portions are good for lunch, but most of the meals wouldn't be enough for dinner -Ordering in app and the on the site is easy. I like that you can save your favorites, order a week or two in advance, AND edit your order -Those in high cost of living areas and/or cities may benefit the most, when you compare how much delivery can be per meal (ex: Seattle with the added taxes and fees before tip can be at least $40-50 per delivery order vs with Cook Unity each meal comes out to at least $15) The Meh: -The menu is a bit tedious to scroll through. Yes, you can filter the search (cuisine, protein, etc.) but it'd be nice if there was a filter for just new items. Would also be nice to have a filter to remove the premium options (meals that are extra) -Menu variety is a bit more than other services (ex: Factor) but the rotation averages a few new options but mostly it's the same menu each week. Because of this, not sure how long term I'll stick with Cook Unity -The gigantic brick/ice gel pack so far has done the job with keeping the orders relatively cool (even for orders where there were 20 stops before mine). However the brick can be a pain to get rid of, and once the pack was slightly damaged. That gel, even the tiniest bit, can (a) get everywhere and (b) be a pain to get rid of (think the slimier version of the packing foam peanuts). If you have some, recommend using gloves to remove -Day of tracking needs improvement. The app shows a tracker, which opens in your phone's browser vs in app. The tracker doesn't reload so you have to manually refresh, and you don't get a map view until the order is 1 stop away or it's your turn (sometimes it'll show the driver is outside my apartment within seconds of the refresh). Hoping the company improves this, not only to streamline but for any customers who may need that concise delivery range if they need additional time to get to their front door/lobby. read more

The selection of meals is broad and most of the meals are generally tasty but the per-meal cost (including tax and delivery) is quite pricey and it depends on what the meal contains: About 72% of the meals are "standard" (poultry, pasta, salads, veggies, etc) and cost almost $15.00 Around 18% are "premium" meals (with meat or fish) and cost more than $20.00 About 10% are "Add and Save" items which are discounted less than $2.00 and cost around $13.00. Some of the "sting" of the cost is offset by their convenience (almost all of the meals are microwaveable for 3-4 minutes).
