Found the closest Cookout after a night out in Raleigh, which actually wasn't that close to downtown, but hey it was worth the drive for the shake and hush puppies. The shake was borderline ice cream, which I love. I couldn't finish it so I just popped it in the freezer and had dessert the next day! They have an astounding amount of different flavors so you're bound to find something you like. Ummm...they serve other things here like cheeseburgers (awesome actually!) and fries (thankfully they are natural cut, one of my favorite styles) but why would you care when what they are really known for is 40 delicious flavors of milkshakes!? This was my first time visiting a Cook Out, I tried the Peanut Butter shake and it was SOOOO good that I seriously considered moving to the Triangle just so I could try all other 39 flavors! Sometimes their food needs to be cooked a little longer, too medium rare at times.I had to tell them several times at drive thru to ensure the meat is cooked well done. The guy at the counter was helpful in suggesting the "tray" option which is basically the "meal" version of this place. What $10 got me: regular sized cook-out style burger, cook-out style hot dog, a peanut butter fudge milkshake, a side of nuggets (4), and a side of hushpuppies (8). Not bad at all. My friend Evan's sales pitch for Cookout is simply "A corn dog is a side!" In fact, at the Cookout, a corn dog is considered a side item. This location is open REALLY late (4am on weekends I believe) and serves hamburgers, hot dogs, chicken sandwiches, and milkshakes to the drunken masses. They have two drive-thru's attached to the restaurant (which itself is the size of maybe 8 parking spaces) and they usually have a line wrapped around the building both in cars and on foot after 2am every Friday and Saturday. If you go I recommend buying a "platter" where you choose two sides. I usually go for two sides of fries, but you can in fact choose a corn dog to go beside you're burger if you're feeling particularly adventurous. read more

In general, I try to avoid fast food. Heavens only know what Cook Out puts in their food. It does seem less plastic-y than McDonald's, but I've never asked for an ingredient list. Like all of the Cook-out locations in the area, this haven of delectability will give you a quick, inexpensive meal that is miles beyond any other fast food joint, even into the wee hours of the morning. Unlike most other locations, this one is right in the heart of Wolfpack country, just a couple of blocks from campus and is pretty much always busy. Even with the crowds, though, this Cook-out has consistently had the fastest service in my experience. Both drive-through lanes are generally 3-4 cars deep, but you'll almost never wait more than 5 minutes from pull-up to drive-off. The quality is on par with the other locations I've tried: fresh and hot. As busy as this place gets, they couldn't let food sit around if they wanted to. No matter your age, coming to this particular Cook-out late night will always get you something extra with your delicious pile of artery-hardening goodness. If you're an NC State undergrad, show up around 2:30am and you'll probably leave with some new friends. If you're a 20- or 30-something who thinks you're hip because you were out til 2 at the martini lounge, you'll leave with a glaring reminder that you're not so young anymore. Now I understand this unit is generally a late night stop for drunken state students so wasn't expecting much . Those milkshakes though.. I know everyone knows about the Cook-Out milkshakes, and they are the real deal. I have yet to have a bad one, but the watermelon, banana pudding and peach cobbler are my favorites.The only downside (or upside, really) is that there are no Cook-Outs in California, where we live. I was in North Carolina this past weekend and someone who is close to me told me we must eat cookout when we go to NC . I told them I never had cookout so I am open to try!
