    Chicken Nuggies.

Ok, I went to this location the day it opened and have continued to go back at least once a week or so since then. You just cannot go wrong with the tray/platter. Though I panic whenever I go through a drive thru, no matter how many times I've seen the menu. I appreciate that I have never gotten anyone on the other side show impatience with me even though they may be. I am unsure why, but I do, I panic and if I don't write it down ahead of time I blank as soon as they give the prompt for me to order. Worst still, I rarely get something different, meaning I KNOW what I want to order and I have it memorized but once I get to the mic, I blank. I usually get a tray with a Hamburger w/ cheese and a combination of corn dog and bacon wrap or chicken nuggets. It isn't too little food and not too much, though I'm sure some argue about the sizing regardless. I've not really had a bad experience here either with the food or the service. Whenever I go to the Taco Bell next door and get stuck in line I always look over and see Cook Outs line rolling along I immediately get envious of everyone on that side. I'm gonna dedicate this paragraph to the onions. At first I thought it was just luck of the draw, getting a big hunk of onion on the burger. You know that, "Do you want a side of burger with your onion?" kind of thing. It's the way ALL the Cook Outs do their onions, they do them thick, and they do them plentiful. My advice would be to skip the onions if it will make it difficult for you to eat the burger. Otherwise, if you're like me, you pick some off to be able to eat the burger then save what you picked for a snack after. They come off really easy and doesn't change the burger at all. If you need a fast in and out lunch or dinner that's decently priced and tastes good this is your place. I highly recommend. Stay safe out there!

Cheap food fast. Everyone does it. Good food fast is something that's few and far between. Cookout falls somewhere in the middle for me. Walked in and was greeted by Jesus music on the speakers almost as loud as the bars I go to play back home. I guess that's just the south? I digress, goodbye one star. The girl behind the counter was more worried about the other guy she was working with and making sure she looked good while flirting to say hello to my party. Whatever. I employ teenagers and know that's mostly all they're worried about. She took our order and it was right, so I'll get over that. They have these "platter" things that come with a miscellany of odd sides, like a bacon wrap and quesadillas. I partook in the Double Burger, with an bacon wrap and hush puppies as my sides. I also upgraded to a Cheesecake milkshake, and that was an awesome idea. The burger was pretty good. A step up from Burger King, but the price point for all the food was only $4.99, so it kind of blew my mind. The sauces were good and the veggies were okay, so their burger was a win in my book. Sides were sides. Bacon wrap was weird; two slices of bacon with ranch in a tortilla. Oh, and all the way at the bottom there were like three shreds of cheese. SURPRISE! It's a good idea, but could be executed better. The hush puppies were okay too. They looked like stubby fingers. But, again, I digress. If they tone down the Jesus in your face, and the angsty teens, this place would be awesome. But if you're into that stuff, enjoy. Happy Eating!!

Maybe it was the fact that I didn't order a burger (insane, I know) but I found myself in this part of town and I decided to partake again. I'm not sure how or why I never revisited the spot but I'm glad I did. One may balk at the price but in reality, it's really affordable, especially when you compare a 1/2 burger that's NOT fast food quality to that of the fast food burger chains. Have you even seen the price of a Value Meal at McDonald's now? I opted for the Mushroom & Swiss with fries and a drink and it was barely a few bucks over a McDonald's QP meal (which is my go-to) there. I think what makes the burger is the beef. It's expertly seasoned and not at all bland/plain like other burger places. You're getting a huge, beefy, delicious burger that you can't find anywhere else. I don't know what they use to season their beef, but it's definitely worth a try. I loved my mushroom and swiss. When you pair a beef patty with freshly grilled mushrooms and melted, ooey-gooey swiss cheese, you get a flavor profile that can't be beat.

But what I really love about it is that they always offer a chili as well as a soup of the day. My first visit was a tomato basil and the second was a chicken and dumpling. The soups are always very good and taste homemade. And I'm a pretty stiff critic. I was starving when I visited most recently so I opted for the salmon with a side of fried okra (and it also came with the salad bar). The salmon was good and came with your choice of ginger soy sauce or mango salsa. The salmon was a little undercooked for my taste but the ginger soy was good and the fried okra delicious. Some other highlights were the huge taco salad, chicken wings, and grilled chicken. They have good seating inside and also have a large outdoor section with tables, corn hole, and a beautiful view. When you sit outside service can be a little slower but they were also short-staffed when we came, and we weren't in a rush so it was just fine.

If you're going to put "Burgers" front and center on the sign at M. L. Rose Neighborhood Pub,…read moreyou're basically planting a flag. You're saying, this is our thing. This is what we do. Bold move. So I walk in thinking, alright, these folks have chosen their lane and they're cruising in it. Server comes over and asks how I want my burger cooked. Not prompted. Their question. I say rare. Now we're in business. Expectations go up. Burger hits the table. I build it out, get everything lined up, take the ceremonial first cut... Brown. All the way through. Not a hint of pink. Not even a rumor. This burger wasn't rare, it wasn't medium, it wasn't even medium-well. This thing had been thoroughly introduced to fire and then reintroduced just to be sure. I'm sitting there deciding if I just accept my fate when the server steps in, sees it, and shuts it down. Credit where it's due, she wasn't letting that slide. Manager comes over, apologizes, and asks again if I want it cooked through or with pink. Again, their question. I stick with rare. Let's run it back. Second burger arrives. At this point I'm less diner, more detective. Cut into it... and somehow, impressively, we have achieved the exact same result. Brown. Uniform. Committed. If consistency is the goal, congratulations, mission accomplished. Manager sees it this time. Offers a third try. I decline. I'm not here for a burger trilogy. I tell her I'll eat it as-is and we can all move forward with our lives. But wait, there's more. My colleague orders the bacon cheeseburger. Key word here being bacon. Not implied. Not optional. Literally in the name. Burger shows up... no bacon. At this point I'm starting to think the menu is more of a suggestion than a contract. Look, I don't get it. If you're going to ask how a burger should be cooked, cook it that way. If a burger has bacon in the name, maybe... include the bacon. Just a thought. Now to be fair, the fries were actually good. Crispy, seasoned, showed up and did their job like professionals. And the front of house staff tried. You could see the effort. They cared, they responded, they did everything they could to fix what was coming out of the kitchen. So here's where I land. Three stars overall for service, effort, and fries that understood the assignment. The kitchen gets one star. Not because they failed once, but because they proved, twice, that they can consistently ignore both temperature requests and basic burger ingredients.
