This is California's version of In and out or at least as close as it get. Covid change everything. It use to be that the server would come to your table but now.... You order on a kiosk machines when you come in. I had a little trouble but Arline helped me out. (I know I spelled her name wrong) but she was friendly and helpful. The service was awful. Came through the drive through at 9:30. Got about half way home to realize the food was wrong. Called instantly and told them what had happened, they said they would remake it if I got there before 10PM. Got there 9:56 she realized why we were there and told her the customizations. No problem with one car ahead right? Sat in the drive through 20 minutes, the guy in front of us didn't move at all due to him paying and not receiving his food. He got his shortly after10:20. But, not before acting quite upset they messed it up. When we got to the speaker the lady said a bunch of profanity. Stopped by the drive through at 10:30pm on a Monday night (April 17th) I ordered, and was quickly met with piping hot fries, a burger, and chili cheese fries. My order was 100% accurate down to the toppings on my burger (which I specified). I parked, ready to eat, and ended up I needing an extra fork, so I asked an employee who was walking other drive-thru orders out to customers. She promptly went inside to bring me one, even though they were still open inside and I could've easily gone to get for one myself (I realized after the fact). I even went back around the drive through because they left out my drink, and they happily gave me a large and comically pointed out how I didn't want to leave. Hahah Point being, both employees I interacted with during this visit were exemplary and sported joyous and helpful attitudes, even during a late night shift. Probably one of the worst experiences I've had at this location. Lets start from the beginning. Slow, nobody really there, we got seated and waited about 5 minutes for our waiter. Fine, whatever. Order our food and drinks and about 8 minutes roll by and we get our drinks. My sisters drink had something floating in it so the drink wasn't touched. I order the triple with a LG fry and and a side of onion rings, hers same no onion rings. Once he brought our food I was given a tiny plate with fries and my onion rings on the side of my burger. Charged me for a large as well and I got a small. Cut my burger in half and ate 1 half, once I was getting ready to eat my other half I noticed a huge hair hanging out of the burger, hence I already ate 1 half. Waiter no where in sight. Terrible experience! I don't think they believe in air conditioning because it was HOT in there! They also don't seem to believe in staffing. There was one solitary wait person working with 2 people busing tables. The fellow waiting was hustling! He said he had been working in the back, but they "thew [him] out" into the dining room because all the wait staff had left! There were gnats flying around my table and at the register where the cookie display is. If I could give this restaurant negative stars I would. However, that being said, the young man who was doing the waiting was hustling to meet all the demands of the customers and man the register. I gave him a 50% tip. read more

This location will not allow mobile app orders to be picked up in the drive-thru, and they never give me a receipt unless I ask for one. The last time I went there, I asked the lady for a receipt and she said it was in the bag. When I got home to scan into the app, it actually was not the receipt with the code, so no way to get credit for the purchase in the app for rewards. read more

Just came back from the drive thru at this location picking up food for a family member. When I received the food it was ice cold. I went into the facility and they attempted to tell me that they have a no cash back company policy and that they would remake the food. That food went in the garbage. I know for a fact that when you have a no cash back policy it needs to be posted and written on the receipts. I used to work at Burlington Coat Factory back in the day as a cashier. Went there for an easy order, double burger and 5 way chilli. The drive thru person opened the window took our money and pointed and i took a stab and asked do you want me to pull up? she nodded yes. So we pull up... fast forward to 20 minutes later. My wife suggests i call. I did.. no answer.. after the 10th car got their order we decided to go through the drive thru (since their lobby isn't open). So thankfully there were only a couple of people in line at this time. so the same person comes on the speaker and tells us to look at the menu and she'll be back... so after 5 minutes we just pull up to the window... and granted this is going on about 30 minutes... if i hadn't paid already i would have just left. anyway, she opens the window and i tell her what we ordered and how long we've been waiting and so she closes the window, with no apology. then she comes back out and has the nerve to ask me to pull up again, this time she actually talked, and i told her that i'd rather not because i've already waited 30 minutes and there's no guarantee that they'll remember us. She then proceeds to slam the door... let me take a moment here to say that I could have been a real d-head, but i always give people the benefit of the doubt (bad day, boss is being a dbag, whatever), anyway finally get our order, she says nothing, again no apology whatsoever. Steak 'n Shake has become our favorite fast-food burger joint. Though pricier than the big burger chains, their burgers are much better. My favorite is the pepperjack melt. Their french fries are cut very thin, so they cook up nice and crispy. But for a real treat, try the chili-cheese fries. They are delicious. And my vegetarian daughter loves their grilled cheese sandwiches. Don't forget to get a shake. Unlike the typical burger joints who have one flavor in three different colors, these shakes really taste great. They have a lot of different flavors, and even more combinations. They also serve breakfast, and my favorite is the bacon, egg, and cheese biscuit. read more

I've gone to this location since I moved out to Madison, and have had decent service. Here recently, it's been horrible! The food has been good, but the service has been slow. I went in with a friend to catch breakfast, and no one seated us.The worker we did come across was flippant and dismissive, therefore we seated ourselves. Several staff members walked by without so much as a glance. It took 20min just to receive drinks. It took another 30min to receive our order. It then took another 15-20min to receive the check, and pay! My friend and I could've easily walked out of the building without anyone noticing we'd gone! This was my first ever visit to a Steak 'n Shake, and it will likely be my last. I've never even written a review before, but I had to share my experience. I went through the drive thru, and ordered a burger and fries. I started in on the fries - which actually weren't too bad - when I noticed something foul. Stuck to the inside of the fry box, in a fat and greasy blob, was a dead fly. Now, this fly did not happen to die and fall into my fries, this fly died in the fry oil and wound up on my plate. How do I know this? Well, first of all...the fly was greasy. Its legs were stuck together. Hell...it was actually stuck to the side of the fry box in a little greasy blob. I have a strong stomach, and I'm not much of a complainer. I've eaten fast food for a good 25 years. I have occasionally found hair - which happens - and I'm able to brush it off. I've gotten wrong orders, or half filled fries...it goes with the territory. You're not eating at the Ritz Carlton. But I have never found deep fried bug. I retched. I spit out out my chewed up fries (several hours later, I am *still* spitting and feeling gross). I walked back in, and spoke to the manager (at least, I assume it was the manager...he had a tie). I told him I went through the drive thru and showed him the box, complete with fat, greasy french fly. He shrugged like "It happens. No biggie." I wasn't expecting horrified gasps by any means, but when a manager looks nonchalantly at a fly that has *clearly* been floating in the deep fryer - your restaurant has bigger issues. I asked for a refund, because at this point I wasn't going to be eating any of the food - it was going straight into the trash. To his credit, he did try to make it right - he brought back a new box of fries. He then told me "You can keep the old ones if you want." I stared at him. "Uh...no. No, that's okay." He looked at me like I was crazy. I don't know if they were having an off day or what, but I'd imagine there bigger issues at play in this location. I'm deeply revolted. read more

My friends and I from my school go to this restaurant multiple times a month when we are hungry. Every time that we go, it's a lady by the name of Angela that always is by herself.
