While more costly to replace the rack and pinion, had the pump been initially replaced, it would have not only added to the overall cost, but left me without a vehicle for several days. This is why I appreciate going to a garage that has experience. Zaps got my vehicle in, did the necessary repairs, and I was back on the road in record time. The mechanic basically told me that I would not have been able to fix it myself (I definitely could have). So, I just wanted my car fixed then so I let them do it. I waited in the waiting area because I knew it'd be a ten minute max repair. I waited for an hour, and in the last 5 minutes of the hour they replaced the part.
