After spending several thousand dollars chasing issues that didn't end up resolving the system, we agreed to pay $14,000 to replace it. Two short years later we received an error code and were told by several other companies the system wasn't installed well - who knows if that's true, but given the quick failure of the system, something definitely didn't go well. Because we lost trust with this company, we didn't ask them to come back initially and had another company attempt to install a fix. They warned us it could be a bigger issue due to install issues and sure enough, it was. There had been a humming sound coming from my vents whenever the HVAC fan turned on. After a few weeks of the sound becoming louder I reached out to a HVAC service company that I found through Yelp and was told that my unit had mold and needed to be replaced. I was provided quotes of bronze, silver and gold packages that had no information regarding the brands nor models that were being priced. I reached out to serval additional companies and eventually came upon Commonwealth Cooling & Heating, LLC. I was referred by a friend about 5 years ago when the company working with our whole house rebuild contractor came in extremely high when the scope got expanded to replacing our old unit versus reusing it. Brian and crew came in about $1,500 less, so we had them do the lower level install while the existing company retained the upper. Wish we could've had Commonwealth do the whole thing! Unreliable company. Charged $89 for diagnosing only which they would not count towards the repair bill. They estimated the repair bill as $700 plus the $89 (how could you fix something without diagnosing it) and refuse to give me a breakdown on it as parts and labor (after a research on the internet part is $150-$200 range meaning I am being charged about $600 for labor. On top of all those, it took me 7 days to get a hold of the technician whom he hang up the phone on me claims that he did not return my calls because he is the only one in the company, and he was very busy. Commonwealth installed a new Bryant AC system 4 years ago and it's been working fine until a panel fuse blew. A repair service put Noalax on aluminum wiring plus a new fuse and that solved it. Not sure whether Commonwealth installed the suspect wiring or not, I contacted them. The owner, Brian, personally came by to inspect the system to ensure his installers did everything to standard, showed me the wiring they replaced which was copper (highest standard) and showed me the wiring that goes into the home which was aluminum installed when we initially purchased our home and not wiring Commonwealth installed. Bryan ensured all connections were secure and tightened aluminum wiring connections on both of our systems which were noticeably loose (a tendency of aluminum wiring I understand). He did more than ensure his folks performed to standard, complimentary, and greatly appreciated. read more

I had Commonwealth replace my entire HVAC system. I directly and specifically asked the owner, Brian if permits were required for this work, I was new to the area and didn't know. He told me permits were not required to replace a furnace. I have since found out that that is NOT true, he should have put in for a permit and inspection. We were advised that the way he installed the units would not pass Fairfax County inspection and we are having to have some things re-done. I also don't believe that he installed the correct size unit as the home even with new windows does not stay warm in winter or cool properly in summer. When we presented him with the opinion of another HVAC company that the unit was indeed too small, that contractor later told us that Brian made threating phone calls to him. read more

Their scheduling was fuzzy but they did work with us and apparently rearranged some folks to get to our furnace issue. They charge a flat $150 diagnostic fee. Prices may be a bit too high for work so check around and I took advantage of a Special on their website. Tech honored coupon on the spot when I showed him on my iPhone... Sometime back I hired this company for a preseason heating checkup. Agreed discount price $60. Furnace checked out but I needed a new water filter in the humidifier. He had one on the truck and sold it to me and installed it. He said all was working fine. Well a day later the humidifier would not work. He would not come out to check it unless I paid for another complete trip at $70+. I said forget it and did not use my humidifier. I found out recently when I had my pre season checkup and told my story to another company, the technician showed me that the filter was in backwards. And no extra charge. One hot night in June a few years back the old air conditioning unit in our townhouse made this horrible screeching and banging sound (like an old car when it throws a rod). I called countless heating and cooling companies, both big and small. If they showed up for an appointment at all, not one of them would take the job. One company even told me that the job wasn't big enough and they wouldn't waste their time. I saw a Commonwealth tech getting into a van in our condo parking lot and got his business card. I called the next day, got a reasonable quote shortly thereafter and was up and running again with a new system in no time. We also got a maintenance contract with them. We've had an HVAC contract/inspections with them for over 14 years. We finally needed a full replacement system. 'Priority service' for install was a week after our request. This is not the main issue but should have been a clue for what was to come. We personally obtained a permit through Fairfax County as it is a gas furnace and it was several hundred dollars cheaper for us than going through the company. Technicians came by and installed system. They were professional and completed the project. AFTER project was completed, technician informed us the flue (expels old gas outside house) was rusted and needed replacement. He stated we would need to call the office for estimate. We had the system inspected by Fairfax County. It failed inspection due to 1. system over fused (40 amp fuse, should only be 30 amp), 2. locking nut was not installed on outside system (prevents theft of refrigerant), 3. Company did not submit a chimney flue certification (document the company submits to the county that states they have inspected the flue and it is proper and free of any faults or defects). Commonwealth provided an estimate to repair the listed deficiencies. I contacted the company to discuss the estimate. Brian texted me and offered to meet half way with the electrical disconnect. He did not comment any further on the gas flue. After speaking with other HVAC professionals and with county inspectors, the company should have corrected items before they completed the install. If there was more cost involved, they should have provided an estimate prior to completion and allowed us to decide on course of action. I informed Commonwealth of this and they had a technician come out to correct the electrical disconnect (over fusing) and the locking nut. They did not complete the flue. The technician replacing the locking nut said "had I known you had a permit, I would have done this when we installed it". So apparently it's fine to do it incorrectly if the customer doesn't know and there is no permit. I contacted Commonwealth and asked about the gas flue and they re-sent the original estimate. I notified Commonwealth they needed to submit a flue certification to the county. I received an email a couple days later that the flue certification was submitted to the county. The document was signed by Brian Johnson. He had never been in our house prior to that certification. The County inspector failed inspection because of the rusted flue. I finally sent an email to Commonwealth, and I cc'd the county inspector and county zoning officials, notifying them the flue needed to be corrected and it should be done at no cost to us. I received an email from Commonwealth to contact them to schedule an appointment and the owner would come out to correct the issues. Brian arrived, looked at the flue and made a comment about our not expecting to pay for the repairs. I informed him no, we do not expect to pay for them. He then stated he felt like he was being taken advantage of. I told him I felt taken advantage of and notified him of the statements his technician made regarding the locking nut and the permit. He also stated the estimate was given a year ago. I informed him it was approximately 6 months ago and, according to three different professionals, at different times, the rust has been there for 'decades' and should have been noted during estimate. Once he completed the repair, he said his thumb went through the flue when he touched it. I never claim to be an HVAC expert but I did speak with several individuals regarding the issues on this install and all agreed, it should have been completed correctly the first time, whether a permit was obtained or not. After several visits by the company and inspections with the county (extra time off), we can put this portion behind us. read more

If I could give them 0 stars, I called them to service our unit since the prior owner of my house was using this company, our system was working great until their technician came and out of nowhere our motor wasn't working (according to him ) we decided to don't do anything at the moment, because it was working just fine before he came, they didn't finish serving the unit bc it wasn't working properly ( according to him) and proceed to give us a quote for the repair. I called 2 months latter because the unit wasn't working properly and asked if the quote that they gave me was for piece that needed to be replaced, and the labor, and they confirmed that it included everything, I told them that they quoted me for the wrong piece (I verified the cost of the piece for my unit model and brand and realized they quoted me for a piece that doesn't belong to my unit) and gave them all the information again and they told me I was right, that they don't know why I was given a quote for a different piece, the owner (Josh I believe) called me and told me that the piece that goes in my unit was a bit more expensive, that it wasn't going to be $450 as they originally quoted me, but $680 (ok it is 50 degrees inside the house, so I don't care at this point), gave them my credit card and billing information and scheduled for the next day (wish is the soonest they cool) 1 hour later I get a call from Tanya (assistant) saying that the quote was wrong, and that was going to be $980, at this moment they are blaming Carrie (the company that is selling them the piece). Needless to say I'm taking my business somewhere else, I don't care if it cost me more, I found it unbelievable the amount of crap that we have to go through and how much of a rip off they are. read more

We've been customers for many years and trust this company. They installed a new HVAC system and water heater last summer at a reasonable negotiated price. My new water heater leaked last week through the temperature/pressure relief valve. Within about an hour of my call, Brian, the owner, arrived and diagnosed the problem correctly as a failed water pressure control valve in the water line entering my basement. It was stuck in the open position allowing dangerously high water pressure in my lines. We live in a high pressure area (according to Fairfax Water and verified by their onsite inspection) where pressure at the hydrants and coming into houses is 130-140PSI. It must be stepped down to 50-60PSI by the pressure valve to avoid leaks and other problems. It is a home owner responsibility to assure this is done. John and Craig, two of the most experienced techs in my experience arrived and replaced the failed pressure valve and installed an expansion tank to better manage water pressure variations in my three story townhouse. They did a very professional job and suggested I contact Fairfax Water to check and verify outdoor water pressures. I did this and now have a much better understanding of how important controlling home water pressure is. These techs are skilled, experienced and very customer friendly. I highly recommend them. Brian followed up with a visit to inspect and certify the work. From start to finish I was very impressed and am satisfied. These type repairs can be expensive...attain estimates and work with a company you can trust. read more

The fan on my AC unit outside stopped working. I could hear something trying to run and buzz but the fan wouldn't turn. I did some googling and checked out Youtube about the problem and saw it was a job that I could probably do myself but honestly I wasn't 100% sure that the problem was what people were saying but I was a good 80%. Instead I contacted Commonwealth Cooling and Heating and just wanted it taken care of. This company replaced my whole AC and heating unit a few years ago. After today im thinking that I should have just shopped around instead of trusting the owner of the company because he lives across the street from me. 5/21/13 a tech came out to look at my unit. In a few minutes I was told that to fix my unit it would be approximately 400 dollars!!! I asked what was wrong and he said that I needed a dual capacitor that he was going to charge me 185 dollars for and I needed to have my coils chemically cleaned which was going to be 165 dollars. Doing those two thing with service was gonna cost me almost 400 dollars!!!! I kindly told the guy I would like to pay for him coming out and that's it. I called Trible's to see how much for a dual capacitor and my mouth dropped when they said 18 dollars!!! Yes 18 dollars!!!! This guy was gonna charge me 185 dollars for something I got for 18 dollars!!!!! They were great at Trible's!! I picked up some foam coil cleaner which I was told to use to clean my coils. I got 2 cans for 6 dollars each. That's 12 dollars for a chemical clean which I was gonna be charged 166 dollars for. So in 20 minutes I was able to clean my coils and fix my A/C Unit and it cost me 30 DOLLARS NOT 400 DOLLARS!!!! It was as easy as changing a freaken light bulb. I can't believe that people can be so dishonest just to make a buck. I wouldn't let these people clean up my dogs poop. If I didn't educate myself Commonwealth Cooling and Heating would have charged me 400 dollars for something that cost me 30 dollars and 20 minutes of my time. Beyond disappointed. Make sure you educate yourself or they may try to get you. read more

I've been using Commonwealth Cooling and Heating for a couple of years now. I've found them to be honest and receptive. They kept my old system up and running until I was ready to replace it, making a couple good diagnoses/repairs that could have easily been missed by solidly experienced HVAC techs. For the total system replacements, they worked around my schedule and were accommodating to a few requests I made. I'm a pretty handy guy and know a thing or two electrical/plumbing/HVAC. I'm also a bit of a nut when it comes to making sure things are done the right way, so I was very happy when the install crews went above and beyond making sure I had a proper and clean new system installation (shoutout to Hoi and Robert for the great work). Most HVAC installers would probably not pull a permit for a direct system replacement like mine, but Brian obtained a permit for the job and it passed inspection with flying colors. Here is a representative summary of the phrases the county inspector used: "Looks good. Nice and clean. Good job there. Most people overlook x, but not these guys. OK, you pass." We have used Commonwealth Cooling & Heating to service our HVAC units for several years now and love their service. They have fair pricing, knowledgeable technicians and have always stood behind their work and service contracts. At my previous residence, I used a different company and while the service was ok (not great, just ok), I never felt like they valued my business much, so I was looking to make a change when I got to my new place. After getting settled in, we got a recommendation for Commonwealth, made the change and have not regretted that decision since. When available, Commonwealth usually try send the same technician which allows the technician to provide a more personal touch, gives him familiarity with and in my opinion, the feeling of a personal stake in my particular HVAC unit. When we have had issues with our equipment, Commonwealth has always been quick to respond. In one particular instance, a small wire got crimped during the re-installation of a cover during a routine check, and it ended up causing a problem a few weeks later. Commonwealth came right out to look at it. The technician quickly determined the problem was due to the accidental crimping, fixed the problem, explained what happened and said there would be no charge for the service call. Quite a few of my neighbors also use Commonwealth and I have heard nothing but positive comments about their experiences with the company. In fact, when someone on my community's email list-serv asks for HVAC company recommendations, Commonwealth is always recommended by more people than the other companies combined, and often is the only one recommended. Nice enough people (owner and his wife), but not satisfied with pricing. $110/lb of refrigerant + service charge - they say competitive pricing due to refrigerant shortage. Maybe so (if other HVAC companies also price gouge), but $700+ for 6 lbs of R410 (Puron) to recharge a system to capacity when each lb includes "labor" is kind of a joke when total time spent was less than 1 hr (don't look up amazon/ebay for how much a 25 lb tank costs...trust me, you will cry when you realize profit margin!). Do what they suggest (in response to other comments) and shop around for pricing. They did respond (initially) to my feedback via email, so I give them credit for that. But needless to say, I will be looking elsewhere for future HVAC servicing. Still hurting from paying all that $$$, but when its hot you make crazy decisions! read more

Not reliable. Called on Monday to schedule an estimate to have a new AC system put in my grandmothers home. A nice lady answered the phone and got us scheduled for Wednesday between 8am-10am. My grandmother being elderly, and myself living 30minutes away with 3 young children of my own, I decided to stay the night at her place Tuesday night so that I may be present for the estimate in the a.m. Come 10am nobody had shown up, nor had we received any calls. I called the company where the nice lady answered and started to tell me the man was on his way before she stopped herself and asked me to hold. Upon holding very briefly the woman got back on the phone to tell me the man would be calling me right away. After about 10 more minutes I still never received a call from the man and my grandmother asked me to cancel the estimate at that time. I called the woman back and cancelled. About 20 minutes afterwards the man, very nice, called and said "I know you had called to cancel your estimate, but I can still send you one via email if you'd like?" I declined the offering. Point is, time is valuable. And both myself and my grandmothers time was wasted waiting on this company to fulfill their promise of service. They simply weren't reliable and a courtesy call was never made to communicate any possible tardiness etc...I will add to this review that we have already received 6 estimates from other local AC companies this week and every single one of them did not only arrive within the window of time frame given, every single one also gave a 30 minute heads up courtesy call to let me know they were en route to our home. Things happen, but this was not attended to professionally in my opinion. If something like this happens for an estimate, who knows the reliability of the actual install or service calls would be. Had Brian come out and replace a capacitor. He did not carry the proper part so he needed to gerry rig it. Tried to get me to replace a perfectly good part because he said it needed to be replaced. He told me that the part I needed was a special order from Trane when in fact it was manufactured by GE, when I called him out on it he made up a bunch of BS. When I asked for the part he replaced he told me I should not take it because of the chemicals in it, turned out it was just mineral oil. Brian owns Commonwealth, he is not someone that I would ever trust or recommend to anyone. If I could give him zero stars I would. read more
