Let's start with how busy this place gets. The line is literally out the door so that's kinda crazy. I really wanted to love it! Now for the breakfast menu. There is alot to choose from. I opted for French toast with butter and syrup since they ran out of the mascarpone option. The toast was dry and barely battered. My son had the blueberry pancakes (whole blueberries in the batter) he didn't really enjoy it. It was very bland. Everyone else on our table really seemed to like what they ordered. I learned that their savory items are much more delicious then the sweet. The avocado toast and fried egg sandwich were huge hits. The one thing that really got to me was the price. My total for pancakes (3 small), coffee, coffee and two pieces of French toast was nearly $40. It just seemed a little crazy for breakfast/brunch. read more

Commonwealth cafe reminds me of brunch in New York, somehow. There are two lanes when you walk in, take-out and dine-in. That's a neat setup. You order at the counter and then get seated. They will deliver the food to your table. The menu is typical brunch stuff such as pancakes, omelets, and sandwiches, but with their twists, such as a shitake omelet or vegan banana pancakes with homemade Nutella. Beautiful presentation of the food. Whether you want sweet or savory, they got you covered. Andd generous portion. I ordered the goat cheese quiche, and my friend got the shitake omelet. The quiche was a big block of eggy goodness served with a side of dressed arugula salad. The crust was thin and tasted like a baked tortilla than a pie crust. I enjoyed it, though. The egg mixture was silky smooth and reminded me of Chinese egg custard. The goat cheese topping adds a nice tanginess. It was quite a filling meal. The shitake omelet looks pretty and is served with avocado slices on top and a side of celery salad. I didn't try it, but it was a popular menu, too, because many tables around us ordered that. Healthy eating....yes this is a good place. However, they are tip hungry. If you're not careful a cinnamon can cost you $12. I paid for my meal not knowing that gratuity was automatically added. The cashier flipped over the payment pad and it asked for a tip. That was an additional tip and it was not made clear. My latte and omelette was $30 after the gratuity and extra tip snuck in there. A little greedy in my opinion. read more

I really like this place! It's becoming one of my go-to's for breakfast. Great coffee, great food, pretty fast to get you in, ordered and seated, really really nice people, but slightly pricier than other places. Interested in going yet? Let's start with coffee. When this place opened years ago, this was their bread and butter. All different roasts, slow drips, etc. Simply, really good coffee. They've expanded to really great food workout sacrificing coffee. They're coffee is really really good. It'll be hard pressed, get it, to find a blend that doesn't fit you. All five dishes I've tried have been absolutely great. They're great in portion size and amazing in flavor. The fried egg sandwich, almost looks simple but it'll surprise you. The bread is so hearty and crunchy with seeds, the over easy eggs burst when you bite into it, the blend of guacamole and hot sauce elevates the flavor even more. For the oatmeal, I enjoy it too much that if I could have it each time I would. It's filling, sweet, and delicious. I forgot to snap a pic of their yogurt, bummer, because it was so so good. The flavor alone is fantastic, add their fruit and granola to it, you have a spectacular dish. Don't be surprised by the green salad with the breakfast. I wasn't used to it, but it really works. It's light, fresh, and refreshing. I'm torn in giving four stars or five. They would lost a star because of price. It's slightly pricier than other places, but since the food is so good, I'm happier to pay for it. If I'm spending more money, then I would like great food and service, which you get. I feel guilty taking away a star for their hard work in being creative in their food and executing excellent dishes with great service. read more

Came here for a late brunch on a cold, rainy Sunday thinking not too many people would be out, but I guess bad weather doesn't keep people away from Commonwealth because the line was out the door. Went fairly quickly and didn't have to wait too long to place an order. Their menu isn't super elaborate, but I have enjoyed everything I've tried. This time I ordered my usual, which did not disappoint: the fried egg sandwich and an almond milk latte. Another favorite of mine is the breakfast burrito but it's pretty filling and I wasn't hungry enough for it. The place has a casual but also hipster vibe, but the space is beautiful. They have the garage-type windows that can open up, and couple with their outdoor patio, it's a great place to come spring/summer. In town for business and guess where I had breakfast everyday? Commonwealth! I would have done lunch too but I think they would have found me creepy at that point haha. Coffee was great, of course! Food was bombdigity. I tried the fried egg sandwich, the quinoa breakfast bowl and the spinach omelette. My favourite would have to be the omelette. It was creamy and perfectly cooked. The egg sandwich is a close second! Very filling and packed with flavour. I found the quinoa bowl a little dry. I was trying to use their hot sauce to add moisture but it wasn't working! And I was also losing taste buds at that point haha. But speaking of the hot sauce, it was so good. I would have bought one if they sold it! I'd probably actually rate this 3.5/5. My overall impression of the place was pretty good. The space is beautiful, and I learned a lot bigger now. They have really good pastries and coffee and the staff was super friendly. Where I dock a few points is the breakfast dish I ordered. I ordered the quinoa breakfast bowl which wasn't bad but it was kind of bland if I'm being honest. The bowl has quinoa with a few roasted vegetables in it and then two poached eggs on top. I had to add a lot of hot sauce to it to get some flavor. I think if they added some kind of spice or tomato base of something it might be a lot better. But, I don't want to sound too harsh! I did eat almost the whole thing! My friend ordered their beans and toast breakfast and that was absolutely delicious. I highly recommend getting the C Latte and definitely check out their pastry case! They have some superbly yummy stuff in here. I will have to come back and try more things! read more

Number one brunch spot. I go there all the time whether it be with my friends or even by myself. It's really easy to focus on work or just people watch while enjoying some casual alone time! The food is also super filling, I'll go after my 2 hour boxing and kickboxing session and have breakfast and won't be hungry again until maybe late dinner or have it as my only meal of the day. I want to start off by saying that I've been going to commonwealth for years. I've always enjoyed the staff, the coffee, and the environment. A few years ago my wife and I went to commonwealth twice within a week. Both times we found a piece of hair in one of our dishes. My wife didn't want to go anymore but I continued going. Like I said, I really enjoyed the place. It took me a few years, but I finally convinced my wife to have breakfast here again. As we were eating, I kid you not, she found a piece of hair in her food for the third time! The fact that this happened over the span of 3-4 years cannot be a coincidence. When we told the waiter what had happened, he didn't even apologize. He only offered for to have it remade. By then my Wife and I were done. She kindly asked for a refund of her meal. We didn't hear back from the waiter, so I went to speak to the manager. Even after explaining to him the situation and how this has happened to us repeatedly, he offered a half hearted apology and said I refunded your meal. Truly this isn't about the money. It's about the fact that I've supported this place for so long and felt like my concerns as a customer were dismissed. It pains me to say this, but I can't come here again. I question the cleanliness of the food and the response by the staff makes it seem like it's a known issue but nothing has been done to fix it. read more

Commonwealth latte is my go-to drink. Grilled cheese is phenomenal. Lox plate, too. Every time we have tried the Commonwealth Cafe, we have been disappointed with the food and the service, but we have always found an excuse to come back to try new items. We discovered that the water bottle and two glass cups were filthy and smelly the last time we were here! After asking the waitress to change them, they were again smelly, as if they had been washed with a nasty sponge or put in a stinky dishwasher! We finally got a bottled water with two plastic cups on the house! Its 15% mandatory gratuity and low quality food don't really justify the price. There is no way we will return to this place in the future and it is not something we recommend at all! read more

One of my new favorite local brunch spots! I love that they have all these healthy and lighter menu items that I never walk out feeling gross like from traditional brunches that are overly heavy and greasy. I've fallen in love with their shiitake mushroom omelette and sourdough banana pancakes that I've essentially ordered them almost every time I visit. Their quinoa breakfast bowl is also another good option that my boyfriend really enjoyed. Upon entering, you get in line and order at the cashier, and you'll be handed a number to place on your table before finding yourself a seat. I went to Commonwealth around 10 am on a Saturday. The line was out door to order food to dine in, but it moved pretty quickly (under 10 minutes). I came with a large party of 8, and the staff was very gracious in helping us gather tables together to create room for a party of our size. I started with the Chocolate Banana Bread, which was very moist and tasty, although I wish it had more chocolate in it! I also had the breakfast quinoa bowl with chicken. It was very filling and tasty. It was a lot of food with the chicken - I almost didn't need it but I was extremely hungry when I arrived! $45.10 for a Mediterranean salad with tuna, side cup of tomato soup, ginger and lime tea, mocha and grilled cheese and tomato soup combo. Hoping this blows us away for the steep prices here. The tomato soup is very plain and boring, not creamy at all and tastes like it came out of a Campbell's soup tin. There is discarded food and nasty smashed food all over the floor between patrons. Looks like it hasn't been cleaned at all and it's nearly 2pm. The side of tuna as extra to my Mediterranean salad was itself a salad with onions and mustard and seasoning, had to scratch the idea of throwing it on top of my salad. The salad with the olive dressing was just okay, but I can get a much better salad and $5-6 cheaper from holiday market with whatever I want in it and a great dressing on top of it. The grilled cheese sandwich was simply average, the bread was too thick and too much bread in the grilled cheese ratio. I couldn't taste any ginger in my tea and a faint hint of citrus. It wasn't worth the money, but I can say I tried out this less than spectacular and overrated joint in BHam now. read more
