Walking through the doors of the Commodore is like stepping into a time machine. It's kind of freaky! The classic stools at the counter remind me of milkshakes as a small child when I had to climb to sit. Love this place. May be a dive on the outside but brings back a bit of nostalgia. Reminds me of bus stops from growing up as a kid. Greyhound use to always stop at little diners and many were run by mom and pop. The food is basic home cooked fair, pricing is reasonable and portions are good. Well it has only been two visits but I feel confident enough to say I am five star in love with this place. With all the trendy restaurants in Edmonton that have come and gone the Commodore has managed to remain a fixture downtown since the 40's by following the simple formula of offering home cooked quality food at reasonable prices. I have seen some people complaining about portion sizes but I was able to get a cup of soup,plateful of Chinese food,pumpkin pie,and a beverage when last I was in for under ten dollars so im not sure what more a person could possibly be expecting for those kinds of price points. I also find the staff to be delightful. One of my dining companions used to eat here when she was younger and the man serving us seemed genuinely interested in hearing the story and was curious what all if anything had changed in the restaurant since she last ate there. The interior definitely may feel a little outdated to some but I really appreciate that they value good food and good people here over worrying about creating modern "hip" ambiance. If you want the authentic classic diner experience look no further because that is what the Commodore is all about. read more

This place is a typical diner that would probably rate another star if it wasn't situated downtown Edmonton. I ordered the 'homemade clam chowder'. My Husband and I have been going to the Commodore since before we were married. This place is a true diamond in the rough of downtown. Don't expect fancy, pretentious, or expensive. This is a little piece of the past where everyone is welcome, young or old, rich or poor, alone or in a group. The food is always good- simple home cooking. Stick to breakfast, pie, or Chinese food. But once the menu is presented the addition of a selection of Chinese food says that this place is more. Great find on a weekend morning during a business trip to Edmonton. Been to Edmonton many times before but missed this place during those visits. I love small local diners. Walked in with co-worker and we were directed to find a seat which we did. We ended up sitting for several minutes before getting menus so was starting to wonder if we were actually going to get to eat. But we did get menu's eventually and shortly after our drink orders were taken. The orange juice was good, not the often watered down juice I find I'm served more often than not at other diners across North America, Florida included. We ordered and our food arrived a short time later and it was exactly what I had hoped. The bacon was just as I like it (a little chewy with no crunch) the eggs were cooked perfectly and the pancake was light and fluffy. The food was really good and the portion size was just right. Cost of the meal was appropriate. Just remember to take cash which is not something I always do so was glad I had some this day. There are signs letting you know it's cash only so it was not a surprise at the end but better to arrive prepared. I will go back for sure. read more

On my way from Office on a Sunday morning, I was looking for a place to eat. Did not hesitate as soon as I saw that restaurant. But I should have avoid it. First, the waitress just ask me if I want somethimg to drink. I took a Tea and then she asked me to wait and just came to me later on her way serving other people, a behavior that tells a lot to me... Second, the Breakfast was horrible and it was a very small portion. Third, this restaurant has so many things post and written in its windows that I did not see CASH ONLY. I wasn't sure I had enough money. The lady argue with me... and I just decided to shut up cause I knew I would never, never, never go back to this restaurant. It seems to me that if you are not a familiar face to the waitress and the owners, there is no way someone would take care of you. So don't go there even if you are ungry.... read more

The Commodore is inexpensive, I will give it that. The service was good, but the food could have been better. I ordered a Chinese plate, and didn't finish. Not awful, but not great. I would take quality over quantity any day. I do like diners though, but I think this place could be better. If it was, I would go almost every day. Shocked! My wife went to Commodores with her senior citizen father and had the following experience: in a slow restaurant with 3 staff they were not greeted when they walked in. She had to ask one of the waitresses who was standing there if they should seat themselves. My wife found a piece of hair in her coffee which the waitress replaced after my wife had to get up and find someone to get a new cup. The coffee was replaced with no comment or apology. She was then told by another waitress after she ordered her meal that her and her senior citizen father may have to move to a smaller table because the father didn't order a meal and the restaurant might get busy over lunch.....and when she did receive her omelette she bit into egg shells. The staff was so unfriendly and unwelcoming.... not once did she get asked how her meal was. To top it off she was charged for everything. We love small businesses and restaurants and wish we could support this one but it was a HORRIFIC experience and we will never go back. We DO NOT recommend this place at all!!!!! read more

Ugh! I am a looooong time customer of the Commodore and have always loved it!! Until today....SUPER DUPER GROSS!!! I went in today and ordered bacon and eggs. I wish that I would have take a picture as there was a HUGE Massive pile of grease under EVERYTHING! It was sooooo gross that I couldnt eat it and only ate my toast. (Before today I have never not finished a meal) No discount was offered....they did offer to take a napkin and wipe my plate ...ugh really??? The waitress informed me that they were too busy today and everything was just thrown off the grill so basically enjoy your grease! I guess the price is okay...but is it really if I paid $8 and only ate the toast and bacon!?!?! Well my friends, you just lost a looooong time customer! Never again! read more
