There are only three of us here in Hawaii, and we are picky eaters. We give our thanks for one another and for the life we are able to lead every day. Thanksgiving is not "just another day" for us, but it is "just another dinner." We don't eat turkey, aren't big fans of cranberry sauce or stuffing, and gravy has no place on my table. Dessert, though...Ah, dessert. Who would pass up the excuse to eat pie and cake and ice cream and blintzes and all of the other goodies that have been on my family table for generation after generation. The small problem here is that I don't bake. Thankfully, the NEX Commissary has a great, creative bakery to help me in my moment of need. At the end of the day, I did not bother to take photos of my Thanksgiving dinner. My cake, though? Oh yes! And my mainland family was amazed at the photos and suggested that I order another one for the next holiday feast. I shop there often, especially around the holidays. I love their selection of international brands, and thank them dearly for German curry ketchup, Swiss chocolate, and Korean instant coffee. These are staples in my kitchen, and without the commissary they would be so much harder to find. Avoid payday, and the end-of-the-workday rush. Don't bring a friend, unless that friend is also an ID card holder. They have a strict "no guests" policy. When I have needed to stop in at times when I have a friend along, I've sent the friend up to the food court to wait in comfort. No need for an ID card at the food court, and they are used to people hanging out for a bit. The veggies are fresher here than at some of the other commissaries on the island, simply because of their volume. Still, I often skip their fresh vegetables. Their frozen vegetable selection is extensive, and keeps my freezer stocked. Don't forget to tip your bagger. It is a luxury to not have to load your bags, and a dollar or two is the best way to say thanks. You can also skip them by going through the self check out line, but honestly, what fun is that? Be thankful every day that you are able to make use of this wonderful military resource. We are so lucky, not just to live Hawaii, but to be able to live Hawaii with so many extra benefits. Today, I was reminded why I rarely shop at this Commissary anymore and prefer the ones on Hickam and Schofield. If I wanted to experience Boot Camp all over again, I would go again. The self check-out machines shouldn't have prompts saying, "Please Wait, Help is on the way!" and should say, "Please Wait, A drill sergeant is on the way!" I have never felt humiliated, not only as a service-member but also as a human being in my entire life. I understand that the customer service industry can be very frustrating as I am in the same field outside of my military life. However, I have never witness so many unhappy people before, in a store. Now to be fair, there are amazing employees out there as well who are willing to help and are overall pleasant but there is something different about those who are assigned at the "self-checkout" area. If you wanted to be treated like a dog and get some scolding because for some reason, the machines are not working properly, the bottle of drinks you are paying for are rolling downhill, causing some kind of error on the system that you have no idea of, forcing them to keep going back to help you, check them out. This is the place for you. I had better customer experience in some of the Commissary stores in the mainland, and this is supposed to be the land of Aloha. Workers at Pearl Harbor commissary are rude. Seems to me a lot of them are filipino ladies with that attitude problem. Don't like your job then get out. I especially don't like that the workers who are not dependents or military affiliated can shop at the commissary and NEX. This should be a privilege for only qualified military. read more

This is where I do most of my grocery shopping. There is a restroom in there, I know I a lot of ppl don't realize it, it's on your right as you enter. There is always a great selection of fruit and veggies. The organic section is not that big, but at least we have one. The meat always look fresh and good, they swap them out frequently. You can get sashimi and poke too! Theres Fresh cut deli, a sandwich shop, Asian section, Mexican section and even Hawaiian! The only downer is huge crowds, avoid the days around payday, Sundays, right after work... It gets pretty crazy. Sometimes ppl run through the isles as they are about to turn the corner and I have to grab by son before he gets run over. That's why you avoid paydays, and they don't stock fast enough for payday crowds. Self checkout works sometimes, there a lot of produce that it doesn't like to read, so it keeps telling you to get assistant, which can be a bit annoying. There are lines for military in uniform 'head of line privileges' but its only during certain times. I have a mixed feeling about this place. First of all, customer service isn't great. They are super strict about ID check. One time I almost stepped out of the store and realized I forgot to buy something so I started going back to the aisles and they wanted to see my ID again. Really? I mean I was still inside the store with grocery bags...It seems a bit excessive and unneccesary. The check out lines could be a caos sometimes. The self-check out registers are inaccurate as always and takes forever. They do carry a good selection and prices are cheaper than regular supermarkets. But remember not everything is cheaper at NEX. Some products are about the same price or more expensive actually. So if I need only a few stuff, I don't bother going all the way to NEX. But this place is surely a big help if i am stuffing my fridge. read more

Great place to go food shopping!! You need a military ID to enter. It is located next to the NEX on the ground floor. There is lots of parking in front. They have a large variety of fresh organic fruits and veggies. They also have an ethics aisle that has some great authentic Italian items imported from Italy ie. pastas, sauces, tuna, and cookies. The ethics aisle also has Indian items, and Asian items. They have a lot of specials that are marked down so you can get a full price item for over 50% off, this includes seasonal items. They have self check out aisles, and aisles where someone bags your items for you. The baggers work for tips so we always tip them. read more

This is the only commissary I've ever heard of that requires every single person to have their own physical military ID present to even set foot in the store, they won't accept a picture on your phone of the front and back of your military id or drivers license or allow you in as a guest if you're with someone who has their physical ID. Don't go unless you and every single person with you has their ID because they will NOT let you in. read more

Today was my final straw this with this commissary! I will never go here again. Went in and everything was fine, grabbed what I needed and went to checkout. When at checkout my card declined (due to lack of funds in my account and I knew that) however the lady helping me refused to listen when I told her to take off an item and MADE ME TRY MY CARD TWICE MORE telling me in her "20 year career" it's always the self check out machines instead of listening to me. Finally when I told her I wanted a supervisor she took the item off and guess what my card went through!!!!! Omg I knew my bank account better then she did! You'll be lucky if you find a parking close to the door, luckily for me I don't mind parking far. The people who check the iD's are super friendly!!! The place is usually packed but you have to know what time to go, I normally go right when they open or right before they close. Try to avoid lunch hours! I love the cashier at the regular checkout lanes, they're so friendly! The cashiers at the self checkout seem miserable sometimes but everything is so cheap compared to the stores outside so that makes up for it. Oh and there's a male coworker at the deli who always has an attitude and doesn't even make eye contact. I've gotten subs here s few times and he always sighs with irritation when I order! Large shopping center. Honestly I was surprised by the prices for many of the food items. Fresh fruit well priced. Meat organic and local very reasonable but other items not great. The complex is quite impressive and I was pleased by the selection. Coming from the mainland I was not prepared for general stable items to be so much higher. However I also had a grocery trip while in Maui and I spent twice as much for fewer items. So the costs are very reasonable when compared to shopping at the local grocery stores. Keep in mind they are shipping in products and that e tea shipping costs is factored in to items. I can't believe that I've never written a review for this place! What can I say? Great PRICES! Great selection on just about everything. The lines can get very long but they usually move fast! The deli is smaller than other stores but they have the basics. Go during the week if you can, weekends are busier. I'm fortunate to be able to shop there. If you are.able to get in, it's a great place to get the deals. Military perks. However, if you are being sponsored in, you still do not have the privilege of making the purchase yourself. My advice, take out the cash so your sponsor can do the paying as that's the only way you can "shop". It literally has a little or a lot of everything you need. I don't see why those id holders should go anywhere else as their main grocery. It's always busy and gosh forbid you come on a payday. Eek. Lines are serious. Customer service is non-existent. Last time I was in there a lady assumed I was going to exit at the entrance when really I was heading to the bathroom. She made my blood boil a bit because of how She communicated it to me, her body language, and the fact that she seemed like such a bitter snoot. Oh, and that she assumed where I was headed. Had I not been the guest being sponsored in....she would've gotten the wrath. Anyway...ive digress. Parking nearby is always going to be out of good timing aka pure luck. Save yourself the headache from burning your gas going in circles and circles by just parking at the closest spot you can find. Unless...youre not in a rush and super patient then go for it. If you're concerned about customer service, be aware that this is bottom-of-the-barrel and NOTHING more. That being said, The plus side is that these are easily some of the cheapest groceries on the island and if you are entitled to this benefit, I recommend the Pearl Harbor commissary due to it's size and the convenience of being close to NEX, car wash, NEX garden/pet store, NEX furniture store, etc. When I come here, it's typically a one-stop shop off Nimitz and I get everything done that I need for two weeks on this road. Unfortunately, the days surrounding military pay-day are always nutso and inventory will be depleted by a considerable amount. Another star taken away for concern regarding produce. Once, when my husband and I bought a three pack of corn on the cobb to take home and grill, we found a worm inside of the packaging. Unappetizing to say the least. Will all of this in mind, I will say that I'll continue to use my benefit until my ID expires due to reasonable pricing and convenience. However, I would ALWAYS prefer to shop at Whole Foods, Down to Earth, or Target simply because the people make it a more pleasant experience. read more

Not a bad commissary experience. They've added a bit of flare with a nice cheese selection and they have a decent poke counter, as well. The store is clean and well laid-out and the shelves seem fairly well-stocked (though the freezer aisles seem to be raided pretty quickly). read more

The lines are always super long on the weekends, and the guy at the door is usually rude BUT the store usually has what I need in stock and the meat guys are awesome. Prices are much cheaper than local super markets (Safeway or food land, etc) Particularly staple items, such as meat, diary, eggs are significantly discounted. The produce section is larger than Schofield's commissary. But everything else is comparable to Schofield's commissary. Negative: towards the end of the day, especially late on a Sunday, food begins to run out and the shelves won't be re-stocked, at times. Also, the seafood section isn't the best. I have been coming to this commissary for a while now with my family. There was a lady in the front door of the entrance and she had the WORST attitude EVER! I guess two guests were only allowed. She practically shouted at my grandma saying "only two guests!" While everybody was watching. When she checked our ID's she also gave the nastiest face. My mom asked if the store policy changed and she responded "it's always been like that." With an attitude. Rude! Do better!!!! She was dark skinned with black hair. read more

Wish I still had military privileges!!! But, you can still check out their food court outside and upstairs. All the favorites there, including Popeyes chicken and many other fast food places. This commissary would get 5 stars but their no guest policy makes me laugh. I can't bring my mother with me once every 2 years to get groceries together but people who have clearly no military affiliation can run rampant with their 50 kids? Sounds legitimate. THIS commissary should have a no guest policy strictly enforced, and those of us who go over to Hickam should be able to bring our mom once a decade with us since the ID is checked at the gate. The employees are nothing special. I got my foot ran over by a produce guy one time who blatantly told me I was in his way and then stared me down while I grabbed my lettuce. WTF? Yes, I reported it. This commissary is generally pretty clean, it's usually stocked. I normally only come here if and only if it's right before closing and I know they aren't buried in people. I'd much rather go over to Hickam where even on payday, you aren't going to get filthy looks from local families acting like YOU shouldn't be in the commissary. Edit: On March 2, 2013, there was some crazy woman soliciting donations out in the parking lot. My husband didn't even get his car door open and she was asking for money!! When I notified the supervisor at the commissary she said to call base security (Who don't come because it's not behind a gate.) On top of that, that's not my job, I don't own the damn store!! Selection wise I would give this place a 5 star, but as Adrienne said..... oh my Gawd.... between getting ID checked several times by some of the rudest people I've ever encountered and the craziness of the produce section, then checkouts from hell I feel like I need Xanax to even shop here. I come super late now to avoid other people with their uncontrollable children. Trust me, I understand. I have a child. But she also knows how to act in a store. I am glad that I am privileged to shop here. Way cheaper than most places on the island. I do have to share my story of the day I almost lost my cool. My husband is away on orders, I have my daughter with me, we just moved here, I'm sick, she's sick, I need in and out. (Keep in mind she's only two at this point) We walk to the front and I show the employee my ID. She looks at my daughter's sippy cup ( which has pedialyte not like it's vodka) and says, "no drinks in the store." Me: "yeah well she's two." Employee: "still no drinks in the store. You have to take that out to your car." Me: "are you serious!?!?" I leave and go to Hickam commissary AND they are OUT of what I needed. I'm about to scream. I drive back to the Navy Exchange commissary and leave the sippy in the car. I go back in and the lady literally looks around my cart. She might as well strip searched me. By the time I got home I thought I was about to collapse. So learn from my mistakes and don't you dare bring your baby a bottle or sippy cup or you have to play find your car and deal with that mess. read more

It's a grocery store so nothing super duper exciting about that! I'll touch on a few tips that can help a brother or sister out... TIP#1 Avoid... the 1st and 15th of every month. Trust me. Unless you like to shop bare shelves, crowds, and long lines TIP#2 ID... Must.Have.ID (no exceptions! Hubby who works on Hickam forgot his and had to sit outside while I had my ID and went and did all the shopping...or was that really an "Oops, honey, I forgot...?!? LOL! TIP#3 Parking... is massive. Might have to walk a bit further on some days like holiday weekends or busy weekend hours, but it's because it's connected to the NEX with other stores, but it makes it really convenient too for shopping TIP#4 Bags?... The Commissary will double bag nearly every item over 2# so don't worry about bringing your own bags unless you want to or don't want 50 brown plastic bags. Meanwhile the NEX will charge you for every plastic bag you need...use and reuse! TIP#5 Scavenger hunt...For newbies or those who only come here once in a while...good luck in finding stuff! Once you are able to locate the product, good chance it won't be there next time you need it. While the overall store is neat or tidy, there's a huge difference with common sense in product placement... TIP#6 Size. The Commissary on Hickam is much smaller, not as much variety and not much better in locating items since the rearrangement TIP#7 Tip. Out of courtesy please tip your baggers. I have been coming to this commissary for the last 6 months and I am baffled by some of these reviews. It does get crowded, yes. Avoid the place on the 1st and 15th and you will be fine! I love their produce selection and I have never had an issue with produce not being fresh. There are some misbehaving children in here but that is going to be found in any grocery store. If you take away stars because of that, you are an imbecile who generally doesn't belong out in public. And as for people being upset about them checking your ID numerous times and also complaining about long lines and crowds, way to be completely contradicting. I feel a sense of security every time they check my ID because it shows that they are making sure that the proper people are shopping at the store, which includes the serviceman/woman, their families, and those supporting them. If they didn't check, everybody would be coming in to take advantage of the lower prices. I love the commissary here and the staff has been as friendly as possible. If you expect them to be completely courteous to you during their busiest times after working an 8 hour shift, you must not have ever worked in retail before. This is the only place I go grocery shopping. The prices are dirt cheap. Every time I go to a Walmart or Longs I always pick something up and then put it back because the commissary has the same product for waaay cheaper. This place is also huuuuge and I like that they have a decent Asian food section. My only gripe about this place is the produce. Everything is either green or on the verge of rot. The apple bananas is picked way too green and they never ripen. Oranges and grapefruit are never sweet, only sour. Items that are hardly ever touched like the jicama and dasheen are moldy. Before, they would get great stuff like Korean pears (actually from Korea), Kula strawberries, or Big Island oranges. But now they just get Green Giant "asian pears" that have no flavor and strawberries from California that are green. I'll happily pay an extra buck or two for produce that actually tastes good. All in all, I'll do the bulk of my shopping here because of the prices. If I'm jonesing for papayas or apple bananas though, I'll go somewhere else. read more

This is the only place I'll do my grocery shopping besides Costco. It is a military PRIVILEGE to be able to shop here. This place gets extremely busy on weekends and most especially on pay day weekends. So, I try to time my shopping days on off pay weeks. I might miss some sales but it's ok. The prices for the things I need are still cheaper than civilian stores. And you have baggers that take your groceries to your car and load it for you. I forgot that commissaries are the only place on the island that have this available as a regular convenience. A friend was waiting for me outside and she was shocked that I was walking out with just my purse and a receipt with a guy pushing all my stuff behind me. Her jaw dropped when she saw him start loading up the car. HOOAH! =) I'm glad they made this a mandatory ID store. The hoarding of goods by those who abused the privilege was out of control. Not everyone who shops with their entire families do this but when the reservists were activated, this place was a madhouse. I saw families with 4+ carts loaded with food and household goods. Due to the low inventory and crowded shopping experience all the time, I moved my grocery shopping to Schofield where there was some kind of crowd control thanks to being on post. In response to the yelp about bringing your children. If your child is too young to have an ID, they let you bring them in under you. If they are, get them one. I bring my kids all the time and I have no problem bringing my "underage" ones with me. If my son forgets his ID, he waits outside. Thankfully, this new mall has the food area upstairs so he can wait comfortably and have a snack. read more

The NEX commissary is always my favorite supermarket because everything is cheap. We had a big party and I wanted to buy the food where it was cheapest so I had price matched ahead of time. When I compared normal supermarket sales ads vs Costco vs the commissary, the commissary came out cheapest for 95% of the items I was buying. The NEX commissary doesn't have the best quality veges or meats but it has the best selection of other local commissaries I've been to on Oahu. I shop here because I can afford it. Honestly, I'm not really sure how those without Commissary access can even afford to buy groceries here in Hawaii. (I'm assuming that they simply make more money than I do.) For the goods that are the same where ever you might buy them (think Doritos), there is no denying that the Commissary is the way to go. And they do carry a large selection of foods and brands, including a great many local foods and brands. (I wouldn't think of buying Hawaiian Host candies anywhere else!) Now here is where they lose a star or two. Produce sucks at the commissary. They always seem to have the puniest, brownest, flavorless grown as far away as possible versions of whatever produce you are looking for. The prices can't be beat, but at what point are you paying the price by paying the price... Does that make sense? The wife and I are strongly considering adding Foodland or TImes to our weekly grocery shopping just for the produce. The prices will be higher, but likely well worth it (I've been in these stores enough times to oogle the produce.) I'd say that we'd go the the Marukai if not for the fact that its so far out of our way. Lastly, please, if you read this, Commissary, buy new carts! You have the most raggedy carts of any shopping experience on island. I almost feel the need to hire a bodybuilder to push my cart. Maybe he/she could get it to go in a straight line! Sometimes... My step dad is retired military, and when the fam came for a vacation on Oahu, this was our first stop to stock up the frig. To our surprise, they DO NOT let guests in. SUPER LAME!!! I've been to a couple different commissary's in my life, always a guest with him, never any problems. My mom and step dad got to go in, and we had to wait outside while they shopped. We didn't get to select items we wanted or needed because we just figured we would see what we wanted while we were shopping... So needless to say I had to stop at a Foodland after. I have a total love/hate relationship with the NEX commissary. I hate it because when I am off work, I don't want to see/smell/touch/interact with military people. I don't want to be in my uniform. I love the commissary because this as close to mainland prices as its going to get. There is a Safeway across the street from my house, yet I drive 30 minutes to the commissary because it literally saves me $100 a week. They have a great selection and rarely will I not find something I need. Word of advice, though: Avoid pay day and pay day weekend. This place is a ZOO. I normally wait until the middle of the pay period when the military moms with 7 kids can't afford to shop. They also can't clean out all the good produce. If your family isn't military or you have a friend visiting, sorry. You can't take them. It's 100% I.D. check and for this, I give them 1 star. I understand thoroughly why they have that rule in place, however, i don't think it should be such a big deal if a family member enters with a military sponsor. Couldn't take my mom here, so I had to drive an hour to Schofield commissary where they accept sponsorees. The people working here suck, but what did you expect? They are NEX employees. They are generally rude and aren't helpful whatsoever, but hey...you are still saving that $100 a week on groceries, so don't be lazy and just go. read more

I honestly hate going here. All commissaries on the island require an ID check at the door, yet somehow here they have managed on multiple occasions to make me feel like I was trying to board a plane with an explosive versus enter a grocery store with a valid ID. The store does have its plus sides, it's much larger than the commissary at Hickam, and sometimes you can find things here not at Hickam. Also for some reason the strawberries seem to be in better shape here. The checkout here is also a nightmare. The self checkout "express" is never limited to 20 or 40 or less and then for some reason I always get stuck near parents who need to be on Super Nanny as they're literally beating and/or cursing at their kids. Hellooooo were NOT at Walmart folks. Last time I was here it took me literally 45 minutes to pay for 2 potatoes. Parking is also a boo since they share a lot with the NEX so I usually have to push my panic button until I find my car but that's because I always misplace my car. It's always crowded here, unless you come on a weekday and it's during the early opening hours (0900-2100 hours are the hours they are open everyday). Even so, you will be blocked in an aisle by an old World War II veteran and his wife's huge ass cart. And because you are the courteous person you are, you say excuse me, but they don't move anyway. Then you try to hide your irritation and go around through the other aisle...It's really best to avoid the commissary on pay days, which are the 1st and 15th of the month if you hate crowds. Besides the crowds, this commissary has the freshest produce amongst all of the choices on Oahu. They have a pretty good seafood section compared to Hickam and Schofield. There is also a pretty good deli counter. Parking will be crowded as well, despite the huge parking lot. If you don't mind walking, it's best to just park nearest the stalls by Pearl Harbor Elementary school and hoof it over. It's not that far... The lines move fairly quickly even though there may be a lot of people in line. Unfortunately, to come here you need a military ID or dependent ID and you cannot bring any guests inside. read more

The DF and I are both Army and it pains me to say that the Navy has the best commissary on the island. That said, even though it is a 30 min drive from where I live (with no traffic), this is where I choose to do the bulk of my weekly grocery shopping because it has the best prices you can find for most every day items. It is an absolute zoo on the weekends so I try to get all my shopping done during the week. There are lots of vendors right outside, and the exchange next door, which also houses some other vendors right inside of it, as well as a food court. If you have a military ID and don't shop here, you're wrong. read more

I think I've previously written a review about the commissary located at Schofield but never had one written about the one obviously closer to where I live. Here it goes. Although being the same store I feel like the three commissaries that I've been to are all so different (I've yet to try the one on K-bay). Schofield is still my favorite mainly because even though there might be a pay-day weekend, the place isn't packed. very different from the commissary at NEX that always seems to be packed and busy. I feel like it's always very empty of stuff too, I don't know how many times I've passed the salads and it's been empty. Other places have lacked things too, like juices or yogurts. It has the same layout as the other commissaries (except for hickam that confused the s*** out of me), with vegetables at the beginning and then fish, meats, chicken etc with the isles reaching for the registers. At the end of the store you'll find the frozen and fridge food. Much like Schofield commissary. I feel like there always is a long line for checkout and that they have no order to what register to go to. Sometimes (very very seldom) there is a person there walking back and forth telling us what register to go too, but isn't it easier to just get the "cashier #" speaker voice to work?? Would seem so. Sometimes I feel it's a little stupid letting the people bring out the food for me, especially because I feel like I can't possibly ask them to walk all across the parking lot with something that I can easily put in a cart and take myself. My husband always fights me and tell me that it's their job, oh well .. guess so. They do have a no guest policy so remember that you can't bring ANYONE in with you if you happen to be the only one with military ID.
