I do believe this place has potential to rise to the 4-star yelp rating average, but my experience was pretty sad.
Great reading menu, all of it seemingly well thought-out and carefully planned concoctions of one kind or another.
Frankly, I had difficulty in choosing from the great sounding regular menu, so I looked at the daily specials. I figured I can get a regular menu item anytime, why not get what the chef's whim is making for today, it's got to have that extra something special.
The special of the day I chose was named the Sloppy Jamie. A new a slightly different take on a classic Sloppy Joe? Supposedly composed of grass fed beef, bacon, and black beans served on a egg-wiped bun, with fries and cottage cheese.
When the dish arrived, it looked like it sat at the pickup station for a long time. It looked dried out. Sure enough, it was dry, and somehow so impossibly bland, that any taste inquiry beyond ketchup and a minute remote dusting of chili powder would be giving this mush-wich far too much credit. Seriously though, it was like beans, ketchup, and a dash of flavor-subtractor. Grassfed beef, where? Bacon, again...where? Pureed beans, plenty. Not suitable for service in a microwave-only grade school cafeteria. Then there's the fries... HOW ON EARTH DO YOU MAKE FRIES THAT SUCK? The fries appeared so nicely with little bits of skin on them, maybe they actually process them there and are not from a food service, whoa, that would be cool... whoops, my bad. The fries were just what that poorly conceived 'sandwich' needed to ensure a totally hellish rest of the day burping up poorly cooked food. The fries were the chaser if you will, an insurance policy to make sure whatever sad shape my stomach was going to be in from the sloppy-whatsit, was locked in as a 'for-sure' bet. COOL! All this for $9.
The cottage cheese was aces, and the pickles were too. Something tells me they were not made there... hmmm, really?
I did not mind the long wait for the food, even though this sandwich required ZERO actual cooking-to-order, and my partner's salad also required no cooking.
The service was terrible. We sat at the counter. The dude who took our order, was seen only one other time for our time there. Someone else brought the food and auctioned it off to us, and someone else managed to fill my water once, only after being pestered for the burden.
Sidenote- Chipped plastic water cups (how the f*ck do you chip a plastic water cup made from bullet proof plastic? but why you don't replace this $.05 piece is even further baffling). Ahh, maybe now I see the light, with all the kitchen staffers overloading on quad-shot esperessos with vanilla soymilk, I see how little things like plastic water cup replacement is procrastinated upon.
Like I said up front- I do believe there is a way for this place to live up to the 4-star yelp average.. but for me, this experience will simply require me to not come back for another dose.
Good luck. read more
