Are you allergic to hipsters? If so, steer clear, my friend. From the second you open the front door you will be bombarded by too-tight-flannels and skinny jeans....even in the middle of July. If that bothers you, you best stay away. If, however, you can get past the onslaught of chain wallets and free-thinking, you will find some top notch grub!
Everything I have tried has been great. There are, of course, a plethora of vegan options, which seems odd when there is also a great deal of focus on bacon. For instance, you can get a basket of bacon all day sunday just for ordering the beer special. I also hear you can add bacon to any dish, but I fear this may just be an urban legend. But you can also get vegan cupcakes (which, surprisingly, are pretty good and don't taste like cardboard). Not bad.
As for the other dishes, just about everyone can find something to like. The turkey-ball dinner is fantastic....a whole turkey dinner rolled into three balls, deep fried and served in a bowl of gravy....outstanding. The meatloaf is great, but I did leave hungry that night. Even the Leghorn sandwich, which has cream cheese, jelly, turkey, cucumbers, and probably some other vegetables on toast is quite delicious; this coming from a man who definitely does not like vegetables.
By far the best is their baked mac'n cheese. You can, of course, get it with bacon, but it does not need it. It is quite honestly the best mac'n cheese that I have ever eaten....and I have eaten A LOT of different mac'n cheeses.
Lastly, and my favorite, is the Kimbo burger. Look it up on youtube because it is not on the menu but it was on Food Network's DDD. Quite excellent. I won't spoil the surprise for you about what is on it, but it is HUGE. If you are like me, however, and you are capable of eating a ton of food, I suggest you do the following:
First, order the Kimbo burger. Second, order the mac'n cheese. Then, when it comes, put the mac'n cheese ON THE BURGER!!! I don't mean a little inside the buns...no way. I mean slather the whole thing with your mac'n cheese. If you run out of burger for your mac, just dip the fries in the mac'n cheese for the BEST fries you have ever eaten. This will probably fill up even the biggest appetites, as well as gain you some disgusted looks from the people sitting around you. Just try it. Trust me. I ate the whole thing and was almost too full to walk home afterward.
There are also a ton of beers to choose from , which change seasonally. Lots on tap, lots of imports and micro brews, some with quite high alcohol contents. The selection is quite large and you should plan on having a difficult time leaving sober.
And the desserts....wow. They are brought in from Honeypie (which deserves a review of it's own), Comet's sister cafe in Bayview. Every cupcake I have had has been great, even the vegan ones. The pies are great too. I have never had a "bad" dessert from Comet.
Here's my beef: The service. Wow....eat before you go because you will wait to be seated. Then you will wait to meet your server. Then you will wait to get your drinks. Then you will wait (a LONG time) for your meal. If you are patient, it is definitely worth it, but I have never received fast service, and I have been there MANY times (because I live close by).
Bottome line: Girls will like it because it is a cute little diner and you have to wait a long time to get your food, forcing you to talk. Men will like it because you can get a ton of different beer (many with high alcohol contents) and order a HUGE burger. My advice is to not try the Kimbo burger-mac'n cheese meal on the first date....it's not romantic and doesn't impress your date....just trust me. The only thing keeping me from giving this place a fifth star is the service. It is pretty bad, though never rude (always friendly). The food is well worth the wait though. I have been there many timesand will be back many times. read more
