The downtown Comedy Works is great place to catch big name, up and coming stars and even new talent as long as you know you are basically going to sit in a basement, on some of the narrowest, most uncomfy seats ever and be required to buy 2 items each for the privilege of watching the show you paid for. Yeah, OK it kind of annoys me. However, I love doing comedy clubs and the downtown location often gets the big names, so I go! Honestly, it is a 2 star place that gets 5 star talent. I gotta agree with everyone about the seats being super cramped, and add that they're uncomfortable as heck, too. I don't care if it's so-and-so's preferred seating style. The seats themselves are hurt-your-butt-and-make-you-leave-with-a-sore-lower-back uncomfortable. So be prepared for that. Hopefully you go with a large enough group that you can sit next to someone you know, so the frequency with which you'll touch each other will be less awkward. Anyway, went for the first time last weekend and felt like the staff could've been nicer/more welcoming. We were like, hi, it's our first time here! And they were like, k, go sit over there by the wall and order 2 drinks. To the point I guess, but could've been nicer about it and/or explained things just a little bit. The headliner was funny and handled an odd interjection from the crowd well. Loved Dr. Kevin. Will probably only be back if we score free tickets again somehow. And even then I'd prefer the other location, I think, as I hear the seating is better. read more

I was surprised by the size of this venue and even more so by the fact that they were able to fill virtually all of the seats while I was there watching Joey Diaz. Not all of the seats are great though - we got there early and were originally placed way on the side, against the wall where we had some tall guy in front of us blocking our view of the stage. It was also really uncomfortable as all of the seats are really close to each other and you really don't have any elbow room between yourself and your neighbor. We requested to be moved to better seats and they ended up placing us directly in front of the stage. Another point to note: some of the rows are not on different levels so you might get a good seat in front of the stage, but the row in front of you is on the same level as you, so your view may be impaired from that. I like all the food and beverage options they had here. It's a two item purchase per person minimum, but you can get either drinks or something to eat. I would recommend their Bloody Mary's - I requested that they make them spicy, and the staff delivered. If you park in the parking garage across the street, make sure you get your parking ticket validated BEFORE you go downstairs to watch the show. They didn't have anyone in the lobby to validate our ticket after the show, so we ended up having to pay the full cost for parking. read more

Using the word "comedy" in the name of this establishment is false advertisement in itself... they lock up patrons' cell phones since they know the entire audience would be playing doodle jump to have more fun than watching the show if they were able to. Most of the routines center around race and rape jokes which is not only upsetting to many uncomfortable audience members, but a telltale sign that comedians have no actual jokes to tell. It was depressing to watch unfunny individuals swing at the lowest possible hanging fruit to try and squeeze out a pity laugh or two for their suffering egos. This dismal establishment requires a two-drink minimum to suck as much money out of patrons before they leave and inevitably never return. To anyone considering buying tickets to a show here, I would highly encourage reading a couple knock-knock jokes and having much more fun while saving a stupid amount of money. Losers read more

Hilarious! Absolutely hilarioius is all I can say about Chelsea Handler who flew out from L.A. to put up her gig here in Denver this past Saturday. My jaw and every facial muscle that allows me to laugh and smile was aching after I saw her. OMG! Everything was up for laughs....so if you're all about being PC....beware! The avenue, like Megan H. mentions is small and intimate with waitresses dedicated to making sure your drink is filled and your tummy satisfied. Mind you, as witnessed this past weekend, if you do drink and get out of hand and a bit too interactive with the comedians they'll haul your a@s outta there as it deserves to be. Coming to Denver in the coming weeks will be Josh Blue (Paramount Theatre on July 17th) and Kathy Griffin (Temple Buell Theatre on June 15). read more

This is a great venue, and it's right downtown - a huge plus when you are looking to grab dinner and a show... They tend to open up with a variety of local talent, all types of humor from rising Denver area comedians, followed of course by a headliner who more times than not is a recognizable name in the industry. Like many clubs, this basement venue has a number of support beams that can be a little annoying if you get a bad seat, so be sure to arrive sufficiently early to ensure good seating. read more

The two stars is for the talent. The comedy was great, which is the whole purpose of this place. But I'm going to point out a realistic issue here, and that's that I felt incredibly unsafe and helpless while watching the show, that it was very hard to relax. All of the reviews are correct. They pack you into a sardine can. You are literally elbow to elbow in a basement, which makes you feel rude when you want to take a bathroom break. There are a few lit exits but the first thought I had was...wow I hope nothing happens in this jam packed room. This place is so tough on making sure you lock your cell phones in a bag, which you cannot get out until after the show, but what I noticed, is there are no metal detectors or checking of bags. So as I am literally crammed into a space with hundreds of people, god forbid there was an active situation or a fire, because guess what folks? You won't have a phone to call for help. The rows are so tight you would be lucky to not get stomped on. If you have an on call job or a new babysitter at home, forget having access to your phone. The whole situation felt incredibly unsafe. Maybe you can hire more staff to watch people and let people know they will be removed if they record? Or check people for weapons? Or spread out the space? Or do something before you put way too many people down in a dark basement without any contact with the outside world? read more

Bartender up stairs was very nice while we waited to be seated. The Gummy bear shot don't let the name lie to you its not Yummy! We got here at 9pm but they didn't start allowing people downstairs until 9:50pm. But while we were waiting upstairs they didn't have the AC on and it was getting hot. When we finally got seated we ordered some beer but never got napkins nor did we get any with our chicken tenders. I guess for microwave food it was good enough. But honestly none of that stuff is important because the acts that was there were all hilarious. The host was fun and even though he made some joke about Denver's neighborhoods, we out of towners could still catch on. Bottom line once you are seated and if it's a great act you will forget, the long wait, over price drinks ( to be expected), cramp seating, and uncomfortable folding chairs. This place seems to attract good talent, is centrally located and has little competition. Aside from those things, packing everyone in like sardines and the less than great service keeps me from frequenting this place. Perhaps if they were striving to provide a quality experience over their current quantity approach, the wait staff could keep up and the patrons would have a more comfortable experience. read more

Intimate is one thing, but the space is WAY too cramped with many bad and blocked angles. Also, better hope whoever had your "yondr" bag before you didn't have pink eye, and not be insulted that you have to give up your phone because someone else wasn't mature enough to keep it in their pocket. Beyond dsappointed. Turned away from Marc Maron show because vaccination card now required to go here. Had absolutely no clue this was the case until we got to the door and were turned away. No apology nothing. "We e-mailed you a day or two ago - must have gone to SPAM. Oh well..." The door person could not have cared less. If a vaccination card is required, that's fine, and if the talent gave little notice you have to CALL or text those going to the show. You can't expect an e-mail to suffice on such short notice to be good enough. Not to mention parking, driving into the city, forgoing other plans. Classless, unacceptable move. read more

There is a reason they call it the best comedy club in America. The venue is perfectly laid out for the audience and the comedians. Food and drink selection is plentiful and delectable. Comedy acts range from new talent to national headliners and everything in between. Special guests (e.g. Chappelle) drop by all the time unannounced, and you never know who you will see. This was one of the first clubs in the country to adopt the Yondr no cell phone locked sleeves to prevent people from using their phones during the show. It has vastly improved the quality of the crowd and comedian experience, and I wish more clubs followed suit. I've seen at least 50 shows here over the years, and they never disappoint. I have never been more annoyed with a show. The entire show was full of staff standing directly in front of us excessively trying to push drinks, pick up drinks (that weren't empty), drunks falling up the stairs, glasses being broken, staff having discussions directly in front of us. Paid a whole lot of money and didn't get to see 1/2 the show. And talk about packing the place like sardines. Ridiculous. read more

I love when a comedy club has general admission ticketing. You get there early so they seat you in the front couple rows, where comedians get a lot of energy from so they can make the people in the back laugh just as much. This was the case last night at the late Chris Hardwick show. April Richardson and Mike Phirman were the openers and they were great! Different styles of comedy but they still made everyone laugh. Then came Hardwick and he just KILLED from start to finish. About 5, 10 minutes in he started doing crowd work. He had jokes for everything! I was seated in the front row near the center so he eventually came to me. I told him what I do for a living--handling baggage for an airline--and he called me a hero for doing that job in this crazy Colorado weather. It's not my life goal, which is to be a stagehand for Blue Man Group. So he joked about that too and was like "Hey you can still make it happen, let's make it happen for Ian!" This was the best night I've had in a LONG LONG time so I just want to say THANK YOU to Chris Hardwick for making me feel better about where my life is going as I approach 30. Thank you to Comedy Works for bringing him, April, and Mike. I also want to say that their new cell phone policy is fair and it really makes the show better. I need to go to more live comedy shows and CW certainly has a great environment for them. read more

Worst Comedy Club ever. they're two drink minimum policy is disgusting and forces you to ingest things that you don't want to ingest.   I personally do not drink alcohol whatsoever. I am nearly a decade sober and want to keep it that way. As a fully grown adult capable of making my own consumption choices -- I think it's disgusting and in POOR TASTE to force ppl to purchase TWO FULL BEVERAGES. I don't even drink 2 pints of water at home in 1-2 hours when I'm THIRSTY. Why the heck would I want to consume 2 pints of non-alcoholic beverages at a comedy club and be expected to CHUG these forced upon drinks in 1-2 hours at a club? Absolutely obnoxious. 50% of ppl DO NOT drink or want to swallow even 2 pints of water if they are not thirsty!!  What kind of ANY entertainment venue does this anywhere else in the world?  IM THERE FOR COMEDY not to eat and drink. And if i do want to drink any liquid, that should be my adult choice.  Ya know, cause were all adults?! The crowd was mostly 30+ in age which im pretty sure could afford drinks if they want to have the freedom to order without force.  Why charge 12$ for a tuesday ticket if youre going to force over-charged drinks anyway.  Its obnoxious and BAD BUSINESS to force paying guests to gobble down two pints of soda pop or juice like a child because some venue manager is enforcing this ridiculous policy. Went to see a show here and really enjoyed it. It's a small venue and feels very intimate. The food is so-so, but there are plenty of good restaurants around to hit before the show. The drinks are great though. The orange and strawberry ice cream drinks are fantastic! Very easy to hit your two item minimum. The local comedians that opened the show I saw were really good, very funny. I enjoyed myself a lot, as did the rest of the group I was with. Definitely will be back. read more

It's the perfect size; even the back row is close enough to the stage to feel like part of the show. Went to a show last night and it was absolutely awful. They lock your phone in a bag - okay, no biggie. Two item minimum - again not a big deal, even for this sober person. But really it was going down into a basement and being CRAMMED like sardines. You WILL be rubbing thighs and elbows with the stranger next to you and the poor excuse for a table will be digging into your side all night. The "table" is metal and not attached to your chair so good luck if the person on the other side is also not tiny. The chairs are butted up against one another and they are not wide enough for you. Like someone else mentioned they are cheap restaurant chairs. They are not meant to be shoved together! I'm 5'3" and 120 lbs and it is worse than any domestic flight in terms of personal space. Once I was settled into my seat (TBH I was never settled) I tried to enjoy the show but I was so uncomfortable I only found one of the comics really funny. If you do end up trapped in this basement please for the love of god check where the emergency exits are because should anything happen this place is a death trap. We should have left early because at the end of the show they tell you to go "out the back" which is down a claustrophobic hallway. After 5 minutes of standing in a crowded hallway we finally started moving. I could not wait to get out of that cluster. How they are allowed to have that many people down there I will never know. It's amateurs who are local Denver comics who aren't funny or national comics who no one knows of or who has heard of these no talent ass-clowns & they really aren't funny. Not cool. I am sad to write this, as have been a patron of this place for about a decade. I see a huge amount of shows here and will likely continue to do so as they are really the only game in town. That said, I will be doing so with a very different protocol where service is concerned. I will not lob opinion or make accusation in this post. I will simply present a timeline of events and actions we will take going forward. It was a birthday celebration, my wife and I went to Maggianos for dinner then Comedy Works for a show. At dinner we shared a bottle of red wine. We went to Comedy works immediately following, and took our seats. I ordered a double Vodka Soda, I believe my wife had the same. About 3/4 of the way through the show I ordered another drink called a Blue Bayou, the waitress seemed annoyed but indulged me in and went to get my drink. It arrived shortly after I ordered it and I took a drink. Things then took a turn. About 1/4 of the way through said Blue Bayou I began to feel very poorly. Poorly enough that I was unable to stand and lost much of my memory for about 3 hours. (My wife relayed to me how we got home, the trouble I had walking, etc.) The last thing I remember is looking down at my drink thinking to myself "what is happening?" Several hours later I regained some composure but not my balance and fell down cracking my scalp open. I required staples. It was not pleasant. We reported this to Comedy Works who does not wish to comment or take responsibility for the problem. (I can't say I blame them) We were told that perhaps a patron had somehow accessed my drink. A drink that never left my sight from the time it arrived at my table. Leaving me to understand that drinks may be unsupervised in area where patrons hang out? I am not certain how this could have happened in transit. Going forward we will be ordering only bottled beer and instructing the server to bring them to us sealed so that we can SEE them opened in front of us, or we will order directly from the bar where I can personally oversee it being made. For the record: I am not a small person, I am nearly 6 feet tall, I weigh 190 lbs, and I had at that point an average of 2 drinks a day. 2 glasses of wine and a vodka soda does not pack enough punch to make me unable to stand. My medical staff at the ER and Primary Care Physician agree, but will not comment. We approached Comedy Works first as a courtesy, but were told that they could not accept responsibility and that perhaps another patron was the culprit. There was a two item minimum and drinks purchased upstairs do not count towards this requirement. Great show! Very funny! Intimate setting. There is a two item minimum per person which is pretty standard for comedy clubs. The drinks were good. They have a wide variety of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drink options as well as food which all count towards your two items. When you enter, they put your phone in a little bag and lock it, so people do not disturb the show by being on their phones. You keep your phone with you. If you have to use it, they will unlock it in the lobby for you. My only complaint about the venue is that it's very cramped. Everyone sits on chairs which are very close together. There is very little leg room, and if you needed to use the restroom during the show, you'd have to crawl over everyone in your aisle. Others using the restroom was a bit disruptive. It's also awkward that there is no table for drinks. We had two bottles and two drink glasses and only two drink holders. Overall, we had a great time, but I prefer comedy clubs with cocktail tables and a little more space to stretch out. read more

Came here on a Saturday night (7/23/16) for the first time. Pros: -Theater is smaller, so the view of the stage is good unless you arrive late. -Will Call, Seating, and Wait Staff are very friendly - amazing customer service from them specifically. Cons: -The only good experiences I had with the staff were with Will Call, Seating, and Wait Staff. Otherwise, everyone seemed very unhappy and unwilling to help. I understand that they try to get the line moving as quickly as possible but I would appreciate it if I could actually take a quick moment to silence my phone before it gets SNATCHED from my hands. To make matters more irritable, the young woman taking tickets and checking IDs becomes quickly impatient when people can't figure out which pocket they left their ticket in. She taps her pen or your ID very obnoxiously, then shouts at you to move aside. You've got about 30 seconds before she implodes. Even the police officer standing next to her looked uncomfortable. -There isn't a place to dine or set your food, so eat before coming in. Especially if you're a light weight. Overall: The location and the theater itself is magnificent but I felt disrespected. I paid for a good time, not to feel harassed. I'll just stick to the DTC location. read more

The comedy itself was hilarious, the setup was nice, they even have speakers in the restroom to hear the stage although it's be nice to hear it in the hallway too. If you are new to comedy clubs, beware of the 2 drink minimum rule (doesn't have to be alcoholic). If you don't order 2 drinks, you'll still be charged for 2 as well! This place is a poorly-run nightmare. To begin, every ticket is, inexplicably, will-call. Doors open an hour before the show. So when you arrive, you'll need to wait in line for an extended period of time just to have them hand you your tickets (which are the kind of cheap tickets on a roll you've gotten at any elementary-school raffle). Then you'll get in another line to go downstairs and file along the wall waiting to be seated. At the front of the line is a group of harried young men, one of whom has a seating chart and will ask the number in your party and assign your seats. You'll be shown to them by one of the other harried young men. We arrived an hour before showtime, and it took 40 minutes from the time we got in line to the time we got down to our seats. The seats themselves are cramped and uncomfortable. They're chairs you'd find at a banquet hall, bolted to the floor with a narrow metal armrest between every two where you are supposed to put your drinks. There's a two-item per person minimum purchase, and they do offer food, but if you get food, you'll be eating it out of a little basket in your lap, your elbows crunched into your side to avoid poking the people on either side of you. (The good news - that minimum isn't actually enforced.) And every time the servers come through, you have to shift and get your feet out of the way. This is extra-fun if you are on the end of a row, and extra-extra-fun if you have long legs. The experience reminded me a lot of flying on a low-cost airline. Oh, special seating bonus for some of you - the club is in a basement, so a number of you are going to have an obstructed view because you're seated behind pillars. Even though you've paid full price for your ticket! And you won't know until you show up that night! And if you ask to be moved, the staff will claim the show is sold out! Even if you can see literally a dozen empty seats that stay empty throughout the show! Isn't that great? I turned to the other people we were with a number of times during this experience and asked, "Is this the first time they've ever done this?" It feels completely chaotic and amateur. There are a number of shows we'd love to see, but we won't be coming back. It is 2015, Comedy Works. Get a real ticketing system. Get a real venue. Get a clue. read more

Comedy Works, you earned my praise. You bring some of the best comedians to Denver, but I was hesitant to go. After reading some reviews, I prepared myself and my bf for an uncomfortable night of cramped space and obnoxious patrons. I really had low expectations, thinking it might be like some other big comedy factories in other cities. One by one, they alleviated my fears and gave us a great night. Here's how: After selling out SIX shows by one comic, they sent an email with info about how the night would work (incl a message about dressing warmly since we'd likely have to wait outside). My other fears, and how they were relieved: 1. Will call. We arrived and couldn't get inside to the box office. Which line were we in--will call or just to get in? Shortly, a staffer came outside to walk the line and check in all will-call patrons. Whew! 2. Seating. Would there be a mad scramble? No. They have plenty of staff who quickly seated groups in an orderly fashion. IDs were checked at the door so waitstaff didn't have to deal with that. We had good seats, though I made a note that some seating has obstructed views, so future sold-out shows might not be so fun if we don't luck out. 3. The seats. They were padded and not tiny round wooden rickety things like other clubs. The 'table' was weighted so we couldn't easily topple it. Not that roomy, but there was leg room for my tall bf. 4. Service. Staff could walk between rows, so there was no passing of the drinks. They were quick and efficient and offered little interruption to the show. 5. Security. A show like ours was bound to have some rowdy folks. But one unruly patron was quickly escorted outside with no fanfare. If he hadn't been sitting near us, I might not have even noticed the fuss. Well-played, Comedy Works. Thanks for bringing great comedians to Denver and making our experience a good one. read more

I very much enjoy going to comedy shows, so it's unfortunate that I dislike this venue! They pack you in like sardines; if you're sitting next to someone large, he or she will be half in your lap, and there's no leg room in front, so each time a waitstaff or customer passes in front of you, you're continually having to move your legs out of the way. The two item minimum is also a pain in the butt because it makes it necessary for the waitstaff to constantly interrupt to make sure you've ordered the obligatory two items. It's overly disruptive. The food is bar grub with very few healthy choices. It isn't very appealing and is extremely difficult to balance it on your lap and eat without spilling all over yourself. And the drinks, though delicious sounding with cool names, contain very little booze and aren't worth the price. It's disappointing that a comedy club in Denver doesn't have a better selection of microbrews. If they are going to have a mandatory two item minimum, they should consider improving the quality of the choices; that way, people aren't just ordering bottled water. Really, I think they should do away with the two item minimum and just charge more for the tickets. It would also be helpful if they utilized some kind of small flagging system on the seats, which the customers could use to indicate they need another drink or food item; that way, there wouldn't be so much disruption from the waitstaff during the show. read more

We went to​ the comedy contest. There were 13 contestants plus an opener and closer. It was a full 2 hours. The chairs are very close together. My father is a big guy 6'4 and about 250. He was uncomfortable, but they kindly let us move to an end. The comedians were mostly very funny. We're from NY where we regularly attend Comedy Cellar. This was a VERY WHITE roster. There is a 2 ITEM minimum and a bottled water counts as an item which is really nice because my husband doesn't drink and we just came from dinner. It was a fun time and so happy that Denver has something like this. But it doesn't hold a candle to the New York scene. read more

We bought tickets to the Friday evening show, paid for them, got a babysitter, made dinner reservations - only to have Comedy Works cancel the tickets when a bigger name came into town, and they wanted to sell tickets at a higher premium. 5 stars for the comedians...Negative one hundred million bazillion for the patrons. That's about 3 stars right? (Hey, I never claimed to be a math major). My boyfriend and I took his mother here when she was visiting from out of town a couple of weeks back. The comedians were really funny and I enjoyed myself...UNTIL (duh DUH DUUUUUH!) the most annoying group of drunk middle-aged women IN THE WORLD decided that they wanted to make the show about them instead of the comedians. Sitting next to said women, I experienced drinks being spilt, glass being broken (I found a piece in my purse the next day), constant bathroom breaks (pretty sure that an hour and a half of getting up and down from my chair counts as a squat excercise right?), and just plain annoyance. I understand that Comedy Works is not to blame for these women, but it wasn't until 5 minutes before the show was over and some hostile threats from other audience members that they said something to the women. Here's my deal with Comedy Works. Whenever I show up I usually immediately dislike the place. There are sometimes lines to get in, and I hate lines. Next you are taken to the basement where the theater is located, and the seating is so tight and close together that you feel you can hardly move. I sit there feeling like a sardine, wondering why I ever came. Drinks are precariously placed in cupholders between me and my date, which has me anxious that with one wrong move I could soak a good number of people in a shower of rum and coke. It's awkward and uncomfortable and I always sit and wonder why I would ever decided to come back. And then the show starts... and something magical happens. Because as annoyed as I was while the lights were on, once they dim the lights and the emcee takes the stage, none of that matters; I become engrossed in the show and the evening just flies by. Featuring comedy acts both big and small, Comedy Works always has top-notch talent and they're always incredibly funny. Like, your stomach is going to hurt when you leave because you've been laughing all night, funny. During the show the waitstaff manages to keep your drinks filled without being too distracting, and the audience around me makes the place feel cozy instead of cramped. Once the show is over and the lights are back on, all is right with the world and I'm ready to do it all over again. read more

I have been to hundreds of comedy clubs, as that is part of my job. Most of these clubs are faceless, heartless rooms owned by corporations that dont care about comedy, just the money that fills their pockets. The owner of this club is one of the few I have ever met that "gets it". She invests time into helping local comics, and she is one of the most honest people I have met. The staff is respected, and do not fear the owner as most clubs I have witnessed. She is a fan of comedy, not just a money hungry club owner. The room is tight, but thats good. You get to feel raw comedy at its best. Comics love this room, its setup is perfect. If you come to a sold out show you will feel the energy in the room. They have great food also, so dont be scared to have dinner here. Its very rare to come across a club thats a perfect comedy club, and this is one of only a handful that exists. Support this club if you are a fan of comedy, its a place that comics love, and for good reason. read more

I normally avoid going to live stand-up comedy shows because I get anxiety attacks when someone isn't funny. I feel bad for them and end up clapping my hands and laughing like a retarded seal. It's not a pretty sight. However, since my date already bought tickets for new talent night and he's super adorable (he turned out to be a dud), I swallowed my fears in the form of alcoholic beverages and braved the show. I must say, they had a lot of funny people that night. Local comedian, Chuck Roy, was a hoot. In fact, only one guy was really bad and I just closed my eyes and wished for him to disappear. After a couple minutes into his act, his mic was shut down, and my wish came true. I had a blast and would gladly come here for a show again. FYI, there's a two drink minimum per person so be ready to toss'em back. read more

Wow. Crowded is one thing; smashed in is another (and I say that having moved here from NYC, the land of tight comedy clubs). Then there was the huge pole that was all I could see. The last straw was that every comedian tonight (except the host) made a point of insulting Trump supporters--not poking fun (used to that! we *chose* a Denver comedy club for our anniversary!)--instead, just nastiness. So much for this club for us... :-( read more
