If you are in Denver you NEED to visit RISE which has the best comedy in town. Nick Armstrong and Josh Nicols are improv veterans who have helped run multiple theaters in LA. They saw an opportunity and decided to move to Denver to run their own place. It's been a while since they took over and rebranded Voodoo Comedy and my lord they are a well oiled machine. They have a FULL bar with thirst quenching drinks, hilarious shows(I recommend BATMAN LIVE and Basement Doctors), friendly staff, and an intimate theater that is conducive for laughs. They just built state of the art classrooms and if you haven't taken an improv class it is something EVERYONE should do at least once because it will change your life. I had two experiences with Rise: 1) My friend and I came during winter season, and it was closed due to weather. I guess I should have checked Instagram in advance. 2) Watched that same friend perform in a stand up showcase for his class. So proud of him. It was easy to buy tickets online. Staff is nice. Love the theater seating and stage. Rise has a variety of alcoholic and NA beverages vailable, but next time I'll pregame or stick with beer. I had the worst martini of my life here, but obviously it's more about the comedy! read more

Rise Comedy is a great venue for comedy! I am a DC-based improviser, but was in town and decided to stop by on a Friday night for a Friends of Friends show, where the owners (Nick Armstrong and Josh Nicols) invite people to play with them for an hour-long set. It was such a fun show! I love that they have a full bar (normally improv theaters have beer and wine if you're lucky). It seemed the bartenders were a bit in the weeds as I approached right before the fourth show of the night, but they were attentive and got my cider quickly. The bar and patio are a great space to hang out to boot. I haven't taken any in-person classes at Rise, but I have taken a bunch of virtual classes over the past year, and they're really high quality classes. I can't speak to the introductory classes, but their advanced/specialized study classes are fantastic. I've gotten to work with a lot of incredibly talented teachers thanks to Rise. Take an improv class and support this fantastic business! read more

Came here for their drop in night improv classes. So much fun! Amanda was our teacher and she was wonderful. We started with some warmup exercises and then did some practice activities. A good group of people, with a variety of experiences. My only complaint is there is only street parking and there are a lot of homeless encampments around this area but I know that might not be within their control. Cost is $11 for a class - very reasonable. read more

Funny enough, I found this place because they were advertising on Groupon - but the Groupon was only for Thursday night, and I was at the GABF Thursday night! But when I saw they had a long-form musical comedy group on Friday, and their regular price was still very reasonable (I paid $14 for the Friday night ticket), I had to check it out regardless. I'm very glad I did - the group I saw, "Hit & Run", was absolutely fantastic. If I were local, I'd make sure to see them pretty much every chance I got - weeks later, I still have the title "track" of their musical, "F the Patriarchy" stuck in my head whenever I think about my trip to Denver (only they didn't say "F", obviously - it was not a family-friendly show.) I wish I could get recordings of *all* the songs from that show, but well, that's the good and bad about improv. I will also say, as a booze snob: I was also extremely surprised to see a bar at a comedy spot with all very reasonably priced, high quality selections, including a list of almost exclusively local craft beer (which I didn't try, because it was now 8 PM, and I had been tasting local craft beer literally all day that day since 11 AM, but it was still nice to see), and $12 cocktails that actually legit looked like $12 cocktails - and at least as far as the one I tried, their peanut butter & jelly old fashioned, tasted like $12 cocktails too. (I especially loved that it was garnished with an actual mini pb&j. It was super cute - and delicious.) I just wish I'd had more time in Denver, since my ticket was good for shows all night for the same price - but I only saw the one I'd come for specifically, since I had a huge number of breweries to try, and only a couple days to try them in. Next time! (Especially if Hit & Run happens to be there again.) read more

Came here for the Improv Duel. We got there a bit early, and got drinks at the bar. The mule on special was fantastic. We stood and enjoyed the space waiting for doors to open. There was quite a crowd waiting for the show. Once doors opened, we grabbed our seats in the second row. They had an improv group warm us up before the challenger and champion improv groups performed. The warm up group did a great job working through and capturing most of an audience member's recent adventure in a haunted 12 room mansion in Colorado Springs. The challenger team came up, and had a pre-set amount of time to perform (12 or 15 minutes). When they were done, the champion team came up and performed. We got to vote on which act we thought won (challenger or champion) which was pretty fun. As we waited for the votes to be tallied, a local comedian came out and did some stand up. He killed it! The winner was announced after his act, Champions won. read more

Saw Hit & Run Improv last night and it was a really fun. The five improv performers kept the show going even with the weird title throw out by the audience. The great rapport between the improv artists had us all laughing pretty much non-stop. As far as Rise - the venue has added more drinks to their menu and everyone is very friendly. We'd just finished eating dinner at Biker Jim's Hotdogs (review here: https://www.yelp.com/biz/biker-jims-gourmet-dogs-denver-7) and when I went to the loo had spotted a door marked with "Comedy Playhouse." Since it wasn't yet even 7pm, my friend and I decided to go check it out, since it was located just around the block. Walking in, the host at the cashier desk explained that there were 3 shows that night with the first one at 7pm, then 9pm and a final show at 10pm and we could stay for one show or all three and cost regardless of how many we attended, would be $10 for the night. That sounded like a great deal, so I payed up and we got stamped and went in to the theater to get a seat. Note - there was also a bar/ lounge area where I went and hung out during show intermission. We only stayed for the first two shows. The first show was called, "Suit & Tie" and it required all the comedians to dress in a, you guessed it Suit and Tie! There were 6 comedians - all of them really funny and they talked about a wide range of things like breakups, dating after 40 with 3 kids, depression, marijuana, etc,. I loved the wide variety of humor and I reckon between the comedians, they'd have been something to tickle your particular funny bone!My two fave jokes from the night were- "You know if Trump gets a pet, it has to be called Trump-pet, right!" And "I'm Mexican and my Girlfriend is from Texas. Recently she has complained that she feels there's a wall coming up between us and what makes it worse is that I seem to be the one who has to pay for it!!" The show at 9pm was an improv show by a troupe called HUMANS (I'm guess its a take-off/ nod to the photo series, Humans of NY??). The concept was these 4 actors/ comedians (2 gals, 2 guys) would chat with the people in the audience and then create a series of improve acts around that conversation. The night I was there, it was a weird conversation about yellow jacket bees (a lady in the audience had a child going to Georgia Tech and the Yellow Jackets are the school's mascot - they stuff you find out!) and that reminded one of the comedians about a neighbour who kept birds and so that was the hot mess around which they based their 30 mins improv show . Frankly for me, I didn't feel it was that funny or successful, but so much of improvisation depends on the material you base it off and this was just meh. I took a beginning sketch comedy writing class with Nick and it was an outstanding experience all around. Nick is an extremely knowledgeable and supportive instructor and he made everyone in the class feel welcome and free to make mistakes. I don't think I have ever taken a class where the instructor was more accessible between sessions. He took the time to read everyone's work and provide constructive comments on short notice and made himself available on his personal cell. The group dynamic in the class was also really great and supportive. I can't recommend this class highly enough. read more

We had a corporate event where we had Steve come to do a private improv training. At first our attendees were a bit hesitant, but by the end of the session those same folks were absolutely raving about how much fun they had! These are top leaders at our company, from all over the country- the amount of laughter coming from this breakout room with Steve was SO much fun to hear. Small intimate venue for improv comedy. They played modest mouse music during intervention which I thought was cool. I came to see the Hit and Run Musical improv show. I thought that the cast were amazingly talented. Improv is already tough in my opinion but musical improv? I give them my respect for their mastery of singing while being funny all on the spot. The theme that the cast performed was "in jail without bail" which was suggested by an audience member. The other suggestion that someone made was thanks uncle harry but the audience voted on "in jail without bail." The story was about a son who committed a crime long ago but was let loose by his judge father. The cold case got pulled up in the record when two police officers decided that they wanted more respect by solving an unsolved case. What's cool about this place is that your ticket gets you into the next show as well. I also got to see a bit of the previous show which was titled Julius Caesar Salad. I love this little theater in the Ballpark Neighborhood. They have all kinds of shows here. While they tend to be Improv focused, they have Burlesque, Stand Up, Comedy Classes, Karaoke and more. We have always had a great time at the shows here. When you buy a ticket for one show of the night, you can stay and watch all the shows afterwards (assuming they haven't sold out). Ticket prices here are very inexpensive, so it's a great night out on the cheap. They have very reasonable rates for buying out an entire show. We bought out one Saturday night show for our MeetInDenver Holiday Party for under $200 (theater holds 80 people), then stayed for Karaoke afterwards. It was a fantastic event. They have a full-bar, but do not serve food here, so we brought in dessert trays for our event. Because this is in the Ballpark Neighborhood, there are lots of inexpensive parking lots nearby ($1-5) and street parking, on non-Rockies Game nights. Whiskey Bar is right across the street and The Lobby is right around the corner for pre-show cocktails and food. read more

Before it began, everyone seemed pretty nervous and out of their comfort zone but by the end we were screaming funny bunny to the top of our lungs! What a great discovery! My wife and I found the place after watching the Rockies lose again. We were walking back to our car and spotted this little comedy theatre tucked in around 22nd Street and Market. We decided to check it out and went to an improvisation show last night. I'm a "Whose Line Is It Anyway" kind of person and we saw a show last night. Fresh and hilarious. It's a small theatre with a bar that somehow survived the pandemic. My wife and I declared the place our "change of pace" place and added it to our growing list of spots to go to be part of society again. We also feel that we'd make it a place to take friends from out of town to see a different type of spot in the city. We don't plan on going every week, but it's something fun and different. read more
