I have no clue why there are so many bad reviews - both the Downtown ComedyWorks and the one south, near the DTC, are top tier. I've been going to shows at both for years and it's always an awesome time. If you like comedy and haven't seen a comedy show live recently, you're missing out. Bigger shows at Paramount, Red Rocks, etc. are great but there's something about a smaller venue that makes it special. The folks at Comedy Works know how to take care of you! They had experienced technical difficulties the evening we went, so we started over half hour late, by giving the entire audience admit 2 free tickets to a future show. After realizing I purchased my tickets from a third party and was massively overcharged, they did everything they could in order for me to ensure my refund was processed by writing a letter regarding the situation and by providing more free passes. They want their guests to have a great time and keep coming back. It shows! Kudos to manager Ashley Chapa who was kind, understanding and willing to help me out. Thank you! read more

Firstly, the current yelp rating for Comedy Works Denver is completely ridiculous. They are regularly regarded as one of the top comedy clubs in the country, a well-deserved reputation. If you have the slightest clue how to behave and what to expect in a comedy club, you will love Comedy Works. But what makes CW different is their overwhelming ability to provide the best customer service to their guests. They do all the little things incredibly well. From opening the doors a little early on cold nights so audience members who showed up over an hour early to see their favorite comedian don't have to stand in the cold, to providing the least distracting check drop of any club I've been to. I've been lucky enough to patronize the CW for the last four years and I can tell you they bend over backwards to make sure their guests are taken care of. As a result, they've helped create an incredible audience. They've stopped using the cell phone bags and I have yet to hear someone's phone ring during a show. In a world where nothing is quite as good as it used to be (pre-pandemic), Comedy Works continues to deliver week after week. I truly appreciate each and every staff member. They do an incredible job. I know they've had a lot of turnover during the pandemic, as almost every business has, but they've maintained their high standards. I can't say enough about how much I love Comedy Works. Thank you so much to Wende, her staff, and Jordan at the downtown club. They are amazing at what they do. read more

The treatment my quadriplegic friend received was unacceptable. Period. The rudest staff both times of visiting the place. More importantly my friends and i were right next to the exit And first in line to leave out of EVERYONE. The staff had the NERVE to set him aside and let the ENTIRE room leave before him. The discrimination is disgusting. You should really be ashamed of yourselves. And cross your fingers you're not in a wheelchair one day and receive the service this staff shows you. First time here. Great COVID protocols. Comedians were funny. Seating is tight. Staff tells you where to seat which is probably more efficient but we were unlucky and had an obstructed view of the stage. Not sure if we could have requested to move. There is a two item minimum. We had dinner and drinks before and it was 10pm so we didn't want anything but you have to get two items. Menu had a lot of alcoholic options. Drinks were strong and our server was great. If you're someone we doesn't drink or can't have any of the food seemed like the only option is 4.5 for bottled water. I feel like they should have more options for people who have restrictions if you're force to get two items. Or just better options in general. Oh yeah parked in writer square as recommended by comedy works. Getting out was a nightmare they didn't honor the validation and ended up paying for parking. read more

A tip regarding the uncomfy chairs - use a sweater or jacket folded up to pad the spot between the top bar of the chair back and you. It isn't very noticeable at first but by the end of the show that top bar is really uncomfortable. Thank me later read more

TIPS: -- 2 item minimum (drink or food) per person. They have plenty of drink options including non-alcoholic (various juices too). -- Unfortunately there are no tables (just lots and lots of chairs) so eating isn't the most convenient. You have to pretty much hold the food on your lap. There are cup holders though. -- Prepare to say goodbye to your phone. They will lock it in a pouch as you as you get inside. -- Prepare to wait in line outside. So if you're not sure whether to bring a jacket -- do it. Great acts here, no doubt about that. However, I'm not a huge fan of the actual club. They pack it in. The chairs aren't the most uncomfortable but the biggest issue is that they are crammed in right next to each other. Prepare to sit very close to strangers. Or if you are on the larger side, it might be uncomfortable for you. Not ideal. I have to give a shout-out to the wait staff. They have to navigate the narrow rows in the dark to bring large, heavy trays filled with drinks to distracted patrons. I could never do it -- thank you! This venue is "cool" like almost any other comedy venue. What sucks about this place is their two item policy. The exist to sell you alcohol and nothing else. My experience was completely ruined arguing with some idiot waiter about my order I had to place. Constantly walking through the audience, they'll bother you and ruin jokes, punchlines and whole sets. This place should be ashamed of this policy and just factor in alcohol prices into the ticket and not bother us during the performance. If Dave Chapelle was here for free, I would not go. Worst comedy club I've ever been to, and I've been to Irvine Improv, Brea Improv, Zanie's, and others. First of all, the seating is f'd up. It's made to pack in as many people as possible, not made to be a good experience for the audience. They fill the room with as many cheap Chinese restaurant chairs as possible - I don't know how it even passes a fire marshal inspection! So you're packed in like sardines, and there are no levels to the seating. Everyone is on the same level, so GOOD LUCK if you're seated behind someone tall. Second, they force you to buy two items, minimum, but the seating arrangement doesn't facilitate even a minimally logical way to eat while you're watching (see above). This is because there are no tables. None whatsoever. They have these tiny armrests between every two seats (NOT EVEN BETWEEN EVERY SINGLE SEAT because, you know, gotta pack in as many fucking people as possible) that have holes for your glass. Except if that armrest thing isn't actually secured to the ground - so you can't put anything on there because it's wobbly AF. Third, ALL OF THE FOOD IS SHITTY. Yes, it's all just junk bar food, but you can still make it high-quality and make it taste good. We had the cookie and the brownie with a beer and a glass of wine, and the food was absolutely disgusting. Neither of us finished our food. They serve your food in STYROFOAM plates and bowls, which, for an eco-friendly state/city, is shocking and embarrassing. Thank God we went to see someone really amazing - Neal Brennan. But even his level of talent couldn't make up for the $40 we were forced to spend on food and drink there. I feel bad for anyone who is local and is forced to come here to see all the great comedians because this is the only comedy club in town, which is a damn shame. I'd love to see someone else come in and disrupt this monopoly by opening another club that is properly laid out and has amazing food. Since Denver is already an expensive city to live in, I don't think people here would be upset to pay an extra $10 per ticket to cover the cost of better seating and better food. Saw a show last night and had a really great time. Had a couple annoyances, but try to leave room for understanding that it can be tough for staff to handle a full house. First issue is they sat us in someone else's seat, so we were moved (and luckily to a nicer section), but then for an unknown reason they moved us again and that time the view was not as good. We never had a menu which made ordering difficult. We could have probably ordered more if we knew the food items. It too at least 30 minutes for a server to come ask us what we wanted and the show already started. Our server kept coming up from behind and tapping us on the shoulder which was a bit awkward. The comedy clubs I go to out of the state are a bit different, but overall the comedy was great and it was a fun night out. First review I've ever written right here and I hate to trash a local business. I absolutely love comedy works and go there all the time and it's always been amazing. Went to the big jay show and the show was absolutely phenomenal, until it wasn't... I went with my girlfriend and she had rested her head on my shoulder while watching the show and a security guard came over and said no sleeping in the club. We were like ok that was weird as we were both fully watching the show. Then a little later she did it again and the security comes over and said we need to leave, and this was in the middle of his set (he was crushing btw) we tried to explain but they weren't having it and made us leave. Very disappointed. After a weekend of comedy clubs in Chicago, a friend recommended we check this club out while traveling though Denver. Just save yourself the effort. Hike, get high or just watch a movie. This was a waste of money and ruined our night. There are rules - anyone use to free speech will be disappointed. Went there sober and wanting to love it. The shows are great but this venue is horribly uncomfortable. After putting your phone and smart watch in electronics jail, you're led into a basement venue that resembles the basement of That 70's Show and your high school friend's parents' basement. I'm almost certain my dad remodeled my childhood bathroom using the same tile that this venue uses as a backdrop on stage. You're shoved into tiny chairs with little room to breathe or move, let alone drink your two drink minimum - this has to go against Fire Code, right? Back at Comedy Works in Denver on Friday, Oct. 11th, 2019 to see Janeane Garofalo and she was either drunk, stoned or just a really bad standup comic. And, the THREE acts before her, thankfully, were awesome! Was she backstage trying to pull herself together to come out on stage? Well, this person wishes she had just cancelled. We could have at least been disappointed and in our minds thought we had missed a great show! Don't know what's going on with Janeane, but she looked bad and had this plastic baggy of notes and papers that she kept pulling from that just made her look stupid. Nothing she said or did was funny. Hubs & I were shocked; almost as shocked as when we saw the crash & burn of Bob Dylan a couple years ago... So, this is it! No more old has-been front liners. We will seek out younger, newer talent for our hard earned $$$$ and our sanity. Comedy Works should have been embarrassed to have to JG on the stage and take our money for such a poor performance. read more

If you have never been to a comedy club, then you are in for a treat! It is everything you expect a club to be...underground, brick, cozy...and some of the best acts around! Tickets are reasonable, and don't let the 2 item minimum put you off...they have very good beer and great food! I've been to both this one (downtown Denver, on Larimer) and the one next to the Landmark, and I have to say the downtown club is WAY better! So, make a night of it...tons of stuff at Larimer, before and after the show. Save yourself the headache too, and take light rail! read more

Go to a different location because of the great talent. Denver downtowns location has big Roman pillars and there are rows of seats right behind them. Which is surprising. I attended the show on July 16, 2023 with a party of 5 people. The comics were very good, but the venue is sub-par. That's an understatement. Actually, it's a very uncomfortable atmosphere with sub-par bar service. The wait staff was attentive, but the drinks for all 5 in our party were weak and a sorry excuse for $15 dollar cocktails. I'm guessing it's management who dictates the quarter-strength alcohol measurement's? The seating is in rows, with no tables, and everyone stuffed tightly together. You better like the person next to you because you're going to be ass-to-ass and skin to skin together for 2 hours. It's tighter than airplane seating! I'm a small woman but had the bad luck of having a large person next to me, who consumed a fourth of my already too small seat. She also crossed her leg in such a way as to put her foot directly in front of me. The amount of space given is just ridiculously small. A small person just barely fits, and big people spill over onto the next space. I've never seen a comedy club with such an inadequate and uncomfortable format. I couldn't help wonder if the Fire Marshall would approve of the amount of people crammed into this small space. I would definitely see these comedians again but not at this venue...not ever. read more

4 of us went to Comedy Works this past Tuesday to watch Ali Wong. Park at the Writers Square garage. You save a $1 if you remember to get a validation ticket from Comedy Works after the show (so you pay $5). The email I received stated that doors would open at 8:30pm. We got there around 9pm and found a long line outside not moving. It didn't start moving until around 9:30pm. If it was the summer, fine; but it's the middle of winter. People should not have to be outside freezing if they're told doors open at 8:30pm. You are forewarned too in the email that cell phones are not allowed, which I actually appreciate. We are all there to watch a show with our eyes and not through a cell phone. So if you bring your cell phone, you have to put it in a Yondr pouch. They say there's a 2-item minimum, but it wasn't enforced; so that was another plus. No matter where you sit, you have a good view. read more

My husband and I really love this place. The bartender at the front was a super nice guy and we loved the show. We thought Yondr was going to be an inconvenience, but realistically it's super nice not to have everyone on their phones and they did a great job of making it as convenient as possible. I can definitely see the dangers of completely limiting cellphone access, but there are plenty of staff around that I feel like would notice anything out of the ordinary and would be able to react appropriately. A metal detector or bag checks might be a necessary evil eventually though! It's definitely a tight fit, but we hardly noticed once we were settled in. We went to the Kermit Apio show and loved it enough to buy tickets to two more shows this coming week. Can't wait! read more

This venue is excellent, contrary to some of the reviews on here. Yes, they place your phone in a locked bag you hold on to so you can't record the comedians. You do have a two item minimum purchase (they say this on their website when purchasing tickets). You also do sit in chairs with a small shared table in between, no different spaces seating than a sports arena. Honestly, none of that is out of the norm if you go to other venues and shows! I have been to comedy works many of times over the years. If you want to get a good seat you need to arrive when the doors open. It is a very tightly packed venue during sold out shows. It is what it is. If you are looking to see a comedy show and have a little more space to yourself, I recommend seeing a show at the other location down south. The 2 item minimum is standard at most comedy shows. Get over it! I read in a lot of other reviews that the wait staff was rude. I have never had a problem with any of the waiters or waitresses that work here. That leads me to believe the people who are getting rude service probably deserve it. We were there for 30 minutes with a group of 8 friends. The table service forgot 2 of our orders and we had to flag down a waiter. After some of our group was told to "quiet" down after we were asking about our drinks, two of us were kicked out. We went up to the upstairs bar to wait for for the rest of our party. We were then told we were kicked off the premises and "banned" by the manager Tom. Who explained we were warned 12 times (in 30 minutes, when it took 20 Minutes to get a single drink) they are delusional and unethical. read more

Seen 5 or 6 shows here. I've waited in line to get in and I've shown up 10 minutes late to a show. I have never been able to get a good seat. If you show up early, like the second person in line, you may end up like me and sit all the way in the back of the club for. You may show up a little late into the opener's set, and you may get sat right on stage behind the comedian. You may show up and be the 15th person in line and get sat way in a back corner while the front seats stay open. You may say something like, "can we sit in those seats?" And the staff member escorting you may say, "those are reserved." Even if you showed up early, you may see people behind you in line being sat front and center to the stage while you sit in the back. I always end up laughing and smiling while I'm there, but the way the staff seats the audience is always something to scoff at. read more

Just went for m 1st time on new talent night and I was impressed. The comics were great. A few we're just okay. But nobody bombed. And one who's name was Zack (I think) completely crushed it! Would like to have seen more women and minorities perform but I don't necessarily attribute that to the venue. The service was impressive. The food was better than you'd expect. Pretty good, in fact. The venue itself was okay. They really pack you in, though. If there's one complaint I have about the experience, that's it. JO KOY was absolutely hilarious that I might have peed in my hot sauce panties... Don't get grossed out... Girls know what I mean, just a little dribble... Nothing that won't dry up fast... Especially here in Colorado... It is dry by the time you change your crossed legs to the other side. My boyfriend took me out for a night on the town... Oh boy, first stop, Illegal Petes... Where my entertainment was watching a DU student try to eat two burritos before he puked. At 7:25pm, we made our way over to Comedy Works for $12.50 tickets and had no problem getting tickets and great seats... Right to the side of the stage and above the people sitting on the floor. A good location for a party of two or three... but no more, because the people behind us literally could not see... They sat behind us at an angel and could only see by leaning forward and peering between people's head. I would not be happy with those seats, but the gent's didn't seem to mind. The two drink minimum is not a good policy and I really didn't want to order anything, but we ended up paying $30 for drinks, so really the tickets and night ended up costing my boyfriend about $60 with tip. I would rather they charged more for people who don't want to drink, say $20/ticket... And if they later decided to drink, then it would be their decision to pay more. The local comedians were a great addition to the show, even if it was hit or miss with every other joke. I think it is important to highlight local jokesters and I give CW credit for sticking with it. The theater is no frills, but makes you feel comfortable space wise with little drink holders and movable aisles so you can run to the bathroom and pray to God that the comedian does not pick on you... Or slap your ass, as JO KOY did. Stratgey: Bring a coat or be miserably cold through the entire 2 hour show. * Star one is for offering a comedy club in general... Not enough people laugh these days ** Tickle me Elmo star two is for featuring local comedians... Even if their act is less than entertaining *** Come on down star three... He is here for CW's trendy and comfortable theater that easily sits 200 people... so great for groups! **** Our final and last star is for bringing in great comedians that deliver and deliver good... Boo to Comedy Works! I was so looking forward to this place! First of all, there is nothing on their website about their two drink minimum. There is ONE small sign by the bar upstairs that says, "Items purchased here do not go towards your two item minimum purchase in the showroom". So, if we did not stop there for a drink, we would've never known about the food/beverage minimum. No one tells you anything. Our server reminded us of the two item minimum at the end of the show, but told us she would let it slide. I'm sure they let it slide for so many people because how would anyone know?! The comedians were just meh. Someone needs to tell the MC that you don't need to scream when you have a microphone unless you want your hard of hearing grandmother in Florida to hear you. Really, we can all hear you loud and clear. The second comedian was just awful. The funniest part of his show was when he left the stage. The next comedian had some funny moments, as did the headliner, but all in all, we weren't really entertained. The seating is cramped. It would be so much better if they got rid of the seats and made it all cocktail table style seating. The only redeeming thing about the night was the fact that we were able to get discount tickets. My friend won some kind of reserve special ticket pricing. We paid 10 dollars for each ticket. Still not worth it, in my opinion. We won't be returning. read more

I came here, and I enjoyed it. I definitely did! It's nothing really special, but it definitely doesn't suck. The bar has a decent selection of beverages to offer, nothing hugely awesome, but some definite classics. The hosting MC was REALLY funny, and made me feel less horrible about my propensity for thinking that people with Down's Syndrome have funny faces. It's alright, you can hate me. I probably slept with your sister, too. I like the setup here, but it does tend to get a little cramped in the close-quarter seating. I'd probably not be hugely thrilled about sitting in a sold-out room next to someone noshing on wings and drinking suds- chances are they'd end up on my lap, and that's not a good look on me. But this place is perfect for either a small group or for a date- provided that Dane Cook isn't on the stage. Cause he'd probably steal your girl. Or boy. ... whatever, like I'm the only one who thought that. read more
