Wow. Crowded is one thing; smashed in is another (and I say that having moved here from NYC, the land of tight comedy clubs). Then there was the huge pole that was all I could see. This is a review on the venue, service and staff were excellent. But is it just me or does the comedy venue scene need an overhaul of their food and drink. Pretty confident the waitress bartended the drinks using sugar mixes and well alcohol, and I wouldn't be surprised if the waitress was cooking the food. It wouldn't bother me if I wasn't obligated to buy two menu items which ultimately I don't mind if you're going to feed me something consumable. In today's foodie culture and craft cocktail scene I would expect more in a downtown location. Simply put I expect more for the cost of your menu items. read more

We came here to see Craig Ferguson, who was HILARIOUS. That being said the actual Comedy Works downtown location is A-OK at best. While I don't think there's really a bad seat in the house, they are crammed in and they are HARD. My tushie was definitely sore after sitting there for a couple of hours! And boy oh boy does it get sticky and humid in that room! I also find the two drink minimum a bit obnoxious. If it was for a lesser known comic, I'd get it. But, when one is paying about $55/ticket for someone like Craig Ferguson it seems a bit silly. I will definitely return to Comedy Works, but only when it's a comedian I REALLY want to see. We went to see Dana Gould Thursday night. They really pack em in, literally! We were on the front row but the seats are all the same - too small, metal drink holders that will eat into your ribs. There's no place to eat your food. However, they are very efficient in getting your money, taking drink/food items (two required) per, delivering orders, and putting your cellphones in a YONDR pouch. I love the big name acts comedy works brings in. DL Hugley was amazing and I can't remember who the opener was, but he was halarious. I love that it's smoke free now, which used to be my only complaint. This place has some great local talent especially the host for the evening. It does have a cattle like feel getting into the show and the appetizers were pretty blah, but they clearly have a routine & i think it's pretty effective in getting us in and liquored up for a few hours of laughter, much needed these days :) Most everyone else did a good job with the details-intimate atmosphere, somewhat cramped seating, good staff, great local talent. read more

If you have never been to a comedy club, then you are in for a treat! This place is by far one of the best in the country (not my words...words of the comedians that come here...they love it!) It is everything you expect a club to be...underground, brick, cozy...and some of the best acts around! I took my son there for his first comedy club experience, and he loved it...we had a blast! We got treated to Denver's own Josh Blue, and he was historical! Tickets are reasonable, and don't let the 2 item minimum put you off...they have very good pours and great food! I've been to both this one (downtown Denver, on Larimer) and the one next to the Landmark, and I have to say the downtown club is WAY better! So, make a night of it...tons of stuff at Larimer, before and after the show. Save yourself the headache too, and take light rail! read more

So, I'm sure my friend and I were not strategically placed in the front row to be the highlight of one particular comedian's joke, but I will say, "don't let them put you up front when you are on a date...just don't". The basement venue is reminiscent of comedy clubs all over the country where comedy is born. I was lucky enough to see the semi-finals of a new artist competition, and it was great. We have a lot of smart, young comedians here in Denver. The host was extremely funny, and I wouldn't mind going back just to see him. He was on point with poking fun at the audience (myself included) as well as some of the new talent. The waitstaff has a difficult job serving people so quickly between the limitations of the acts, and they do a great job. It's a fun experience. Support local artists :) read more

The waitstaff at this place were incredibly rude and condescending. We were patronized for not drinking enough. When I didn't want to order another beer (since i had about one sip of my first), the waitress was like, you know there is a drink minimum, and I've already let others in your group slide. Well too bad. I'm not buying more drinks that I'm not going to enjoy. Pushing drinks on you is just irresponsible. There were four acts, the first and last comedians were good, but the other two were not at all. The second guy was quite vulgar, and the third guy was painfully bad. Both of them were hard to watch. I felt kind of butchered by the time the main act started. Then I was taking a call out in the lobby, and the people who worked there were so loud and catty themselves, it made it impossible to hear my conversation. They told me to move back (towards them) so I didn't disturb anyone else in the audience. Actually they were the ones making more noise than I. The night started off well enough there, but it went downhill quickly. It was bad enough that half of the comedians were bad, but the people who worked there were pretty awful and unaccommodating. read more

One of my favorite comedians often says that this is one of the best rooms in the country, if not the best. In addition to consistently great shows, I'm kind of here for the food. Everytime I come here I have an awesome experience! Some of the cheaper shows are some of the funniest experiences that I've had and always leave satisfied and laughing. The Thick Skin and New Talent Night are some of my favorite. They have a great menu with delicious food which in my is priced very fairly. I have never seen a big act here. The days I go are for local talent nights. And if you have not been, I suggest you go, because Denver has some very funny people. Comedy Works has a nice setup with their elevated seating so that no matter where you are, you can generally see the stage. However, the seats are incredibly close and maneuvering through them is only slightly less awkward than trying to get out of an airplane seat when the seats in front of you are fully reclined. Someone's either getting boobs or butt in their face. The waitstaff is courteous and polite and timely, but never, ever order food here. It is overpriced and horrible. Jalapeno poppers are magma hot on the outside and frozen solid on the inside. Don't ask me the science involved in getting that to happen, but it does. Overall, I always have a good time at Comedy Works, but never because of the seating or food. Always because of the talent. read more

There's a good reason that so many big-time comics cite Comedy Works as one of their favorite places to play. It's set up nicely and brings in top-notch talent. I've got no complaints about that. My complaint? They have an antiquated "drink minimum" that they enforce by requiring you to show proof of the drinks before they'll let you leave. That's usually not a problem, but one night I stopped in to check out my friend's (literally) 2-minute set. I paid to get in, then had to get back to work (and therefore wasn't drinking) and they tried to hassle me about leaving. I was cool about it, and they were ultimately cool about it. I think they realized that, when it comes down to it, try and stop me from leaving the building. Don't think so. But in terms of quality of talent and enjoyment, Comedy Works is a great destination. read more

Comedy Works downtown is a Denver gem! Saw three comedians last night, headlined by Joe Zimmerman, and all three had me laughing until my mascara ran! Grateful for the club's attention to dealing with cell phone distraction by blocking them with Yondr. NOTE: DESPITE WHAT YOU READ BELOW, THE CLUB DOES NOT TAKE YOUR PHONE AWAY. YOU KEEP IT IN A LOCKED YONDR CASE. I don't know why anyone would gripe about that except rude people who like to use their cell phones during performances. Two people, considering 2 drink minimum and ticket prices, will cost $100 2 cons: seats are extremely narrow which means awkward interactions with neighbor's elbows jostling your drinks. Next, their amply built wait staff will stand in front of you with their posterior in your face while they're taking drink orders mid-show, meaning you will miss much of the show because of them. I give perfect 5 stars for the talent but they lose a star because of the mid-show wait-staff nuisance. read more

Hope you really want to see the performer at Comedy Works...because the venue isn't all that great. Packed in like cattle, you filter into the lobby, hoping you can get to the box office. Once there, you're filtered into the basement, where you're forced into tiny seats and ordered to spend at least 10 bucks on drinks. You had better hope the random 15 people in your immediate vicinity don't have gas and have all showered recently, because you will know about it. Wait...this HAS to be a joke, right?! I'm at a comedy club and they're just messin' with me, right?! Ha, I get it! Good one, Comedy Works! But once the show begins, you can see the place is fairly intimate. It has to be, considering the confined space. The brochures of Comedy Works include quotes from various performers, saying how much they love the place. I'm sure it's great joint for comedians, but not so much for the audience. read more

For how hard the comedians work, you'd think the venue would try harder to make it worth the visit. The downtown Comedy Works is about as tightly packed as you can get. They've engineered it so that there's really only enough space to walk by without stepping on a whole lot of toes every other row. Efficient layout for waiters? Sure. Beneficial to those stuck in the short-changed row? Not so much. Be sure to get in early enough to snag seats with a little more room, but even then you might be corralled by the staff into a less-than-ideal seating situation. If the claustrophobic among you are balking, then you'll REALLY be sold by the low ceiling. They really nailed the "the headroom was a little tight, but we decided to finish the basement anyway" look. The price seems pretty decent at first glance, but then you notice the two drink minimum. Seriously, guys? Maybe leave the jokes to the comedians, that add-on is none too funny. Although it might have been a random fluke, I feel I should add that their creditcard machine had some kind of error this last weekend. The two drink minimum meant pretty much everybody with a card was stuck in their chairs while the MC died on stage in an impromptu performance. We all agreed it would have been better just to admit the error, turn on the lights, and let us talk instead of trying to force a half-assed fourth act. For all the bile I'm heaping on them the three stars must seem a bit generous, but the fact is that most of the comedians I've seen here have been excellent. I'll give them a little credit for their selection, but presentation has a long way to go. read more

Comedy Works really had their game on for NYE. We came to the 6pm show (no kids for us, but we wanted to ensure we made the 9pm fireworks and had a safe venture home before the crazies made their appearance). Anyone can perform on a slow night - Comedy Works offered great service and answered their phone on a near full-house night. Great waitstaff timing and seats. We were in the middle at the end of the row and saw the stage just fine. The intro and headliner was laugh out loud clean humor. We even caught apps and drinks on Larimer before the 9pm fireworks. Exactly the NYE experience we hoped for. Comedy Works delivered. read more

Comedy Works how I wish you were in the Springs... but you probably wouldn't have as good of acts as you do so I'm fine with making the drive. I was quite pleasantly surprised by this place. Huddled in downtown Denver, it's not a distinctive building (but it doesn't really need to be). You can either buy tickets online or when you get there. I recommend before hand especially for bigger names (sells out quick). They allow you in maybe 10 minutes before the act; you go down in a sort of basement; where a representative helps to seat you. Organized and fast. This place does have a two drink minimum... so waiter's are all around getting orders. The place is private and like other people have said... Not a bad seat anywhere. So looking to do something a little different than the typical Saturday night at the bar, check these guys out... and when the show is over you are a hop, skip, and a jump to your next venture for the night! read more

Great line up, but man this place is a hole... Yes, its a hole in the ground with extremely poor seating. Did I say hole, I meant pit! If you go, go early or you will sit behind the stage. Think I'm kidding, show up late. You can't even see the stage. The one in DTC is very clean and new - Comfortable is a great way to put it. Like so many reviews here I admit the venue is not the most elegant, comfortable or reasonably priced, however they book some great talent, they are right on Larimier Square and I love a good laugh!!!! The location requires you descend into a dark basement and file into a tight little space that is arguably in need of a deep clean. It does however create an intimate atmosphere which balances out the discomfort a bit. The drinks, 2 minimum, are pretty iffy but that seems standard for clubs these days. Overall, if you anticipate the tight venue you won't be let down and can focus on the great talent and constant laughs!!! read more

My friend and I went here last Saturday night to catch Ben Roy and Greg Baumhauer's (my two local favs) 10:30 show. I'd never been here before but as soon as we walked in we were shown where to go to pick up our tickets and down the stairs to where the shows were held. Once down the stairs, we were promptly escorted to our seats, given menus, and had our order taken within 5 minutes of walking into the place. So the service is definitely amazing. I can't talk about how tight it is in the general seating because we were seated right on the stage. I mean literally. It was pretty funny. Kind of uncomfortable, but my friend and I can say we had the best view in the house. We had an armrest with 2 cupholders for our drinks so that was pretty nice. We didn't realize there was a two drink minimum but don't have a problem with that because we're out to have fun and support places that support local talent. I love how well Comedy Works treats our local comics because they (esp. Ben and Greg) definitely deserve it. They were hilarious and got the room going. Troy, the MC, was pretty funny and great at his job. It's a nice place, kind of small and intimate, but that's really how I would prefer seeing any kind of show. It's dark, it's hot and crowded, the box office staff is surly, the seating staff is even more surly and the drinks are way overpriced. But it's the freaking Catalina Wine Mixer! I mean it's freaking Comedy Works people! No suburban cleanliness or nice seating with ultra pretty and polite waiters, this is for people who actually have a good sense of humor and can take a barrage of cursing, drinking, abuse, some moderate funny racism, and being dumped out into the alley as an exit when it's over. This is my kind of place. This place has a lot of history too, many famous comedians cut their teeth here in the 80s (Leno, Roseanne, Ferguson, Seinfeld, Carlin, etc) so you got that going for you. I've seen several shows here and most people are right, there are only a few bad seats in this dark basement (there are some columns in the way for some people). They have the standard 2 drink minimum, just FYI that a 6oz gin & tonic will run you $8. They also serve a limited menu of finger foods like hot pretzels and fish & chips. TIP: If you come here with one of their "Passes", come early because you will queue three times before you are seated. Once outside for about half and hour (dress warmly) then again inside after you buy your ticket for another half and hour, then again down in the basement until the staff seats you. TIP: If you buy your ticket online, you still need to stop by the box office window inside and exchange your printed ticket for their house carnival-style tickets. Also, IDs are 100% checked so don't leave it at home, even if your 50. read more

We were seated off to the side on stage right for Brad Williams where my right shoulder met a huge column. I like having no one sitting next to me but a huge column and an awkward view of the stage? Not my favorite. Service and food were excellent. I almost feel like we were profiled in some way or another. The hostess and the waitress communicated with their eyes and mumbled a couple words to each other. When we got to the seating area, there were plenty of seats everywhere else but we were pushed all the way to the side. Go figure. The seating is very nice and an extremely intimate space despite having seating for 300+. We went to Comedy Works for a particular headliner and really enjoyed all of the opening acts that the Comedy Works brought in. This place is VERY BAD!!!!! The staff is rude and made discriminating commits towards us. We were kicked out after paying are 90 dollars to see the show because my friend yelled out a commit that was no were rude or dicriminating...So asked us to leave 30 minutes into the show!...and can you believe they charged us for our two drink minimum even thou we only had one drink each. When we asked for a refund of our admission we were told NO and that they were calling the police. boycott this place they discriminate!!!! A group of us went out for date night and had a horrific time. The emcee was an extremely racist black woman. All she did was trash talk white people, there was no laughter from the entire crowd. We stayed throughout her opening standup knowing that she wasn't the reason we were there. The first comedian was fine but the headliner was from Canada and he bashed gun laws and America and mocked our country. Six people got up to leave and we followed suit. When we went to retrieve our phones they asked if everything was okay and I said the emcee was racist and nobody seemed surprised by it. The venue is hot, the seats are uncomfortable, its extremely small and the service is beyond slow. Save you time and money. read more

I really like The Comedy Works. Most of the acts I've seen here have been hilarious! I've been coming to The Comedy Works since I turned 21, in 2001. The acts are great and the atmosphere is awesome, but they pack you in very tight and the chairs are extremely uncomfortable. There are no arm rests, just a narrow wedge with holes in it for you to stick your drink. I have to tightly cross my arms to not be smashed up against the person next to me. Luckily, on my last trip here, I had my father on one side and my boyfriend on the other side so it wasn't so bad. But I've been here when I've had to sit next to strangers and it's very uncomfortable. If The Comedy Works would put in wider seats with more padding (I'd even suggest movie theater seats with cup holders) it would be much more enjoyable and I'd actually make a point to come here more often! They also need to drop the bullshit 2 drink minimum they have. The tickets are pricey enough! read more

We laughed very, very hard this past Sunday, Jan 10th and so did everyone else...well, except for the guy in the front row wearing jeans shorts and the other guy wearing women's jeans....oh yeah and the guy wearing the Afflication tshirt... Comedy Works called me a few days prior and I "won" 20 tickets to an upcoming show. "Won" is technically not the word, I got my free ticket and 19 other tickets that were $5 a piece. But hey, that's $7 off the regular price! She mentioned Sunday, the 10th was an option and I said, "Yes, that's my birthday" and then she told me that my first drink was on her. Very cool! The waitress was seriously awesome. The food was good. So many alcohol drink options. Since you have to order two items per person (some expensive, some not,) my boyfriend and I split a turkey club with the kettle chips, he had two beers and I had a diet coke. I chose the expensive pinot grigio as my free drink..of course! The sandwich and chips were really good. Considering it's my birthday, there are no limits so I ordered mayonnaise on my sandwich which ended up costing $0.50 but I think they gave me $3.00 worth...I'm not sure who won here? Eek! The seating is very close and we had a lot of large men with us and small girls, but whatever, they sat on aisles, it was fine. I was comfy! The featured comedian was Randy Kagan who tours with Craig Ferguson. All of the comedians were funny in their own way. I can't wait to go back and "win" more tickets considering I hear that some people get called once a month. I'll take it. Comedy Works is a great time if you want to go out and do something a little different than your standard bar or club. The space is small and intimate...really no bad seat in the house. The servers are always amazing and right on top of things. Their usual, local comedians are always funny and entertaining...especially when you're in a packed place with couple hundred other people laughing along with you. I can't say I've ever actually paid for a ticket here. I've known somebody who's known somebody or found a special free ticket offer in the newspaper or something. After you sign up for their mailing list, they call you pretty much every month and offer you more free tickets. And that's cool, I love free things. That said, if they got rid of their two drink minimum, I may actually buy a ticket. I don't like being forced to drink or ordering food I don't want. It's wasteful. I was once out and truly did not feel drinky, so I ended up having to order a dessert and get it wrapped up for later. Also, the cocktail and blended drink menu probably hasn't been updated since 1995. I usually just stick with Stella but would be more receptive to ordering and drinking more if they offered something a little more "out of the box." That said, I enjoy a night out at the Comedy Works every now and then. I probably wouldn't consider it if I had to pay full ticket price AND buy two drinks. Comedy Works is a magical land filled with laughter and hilarity and strongly-poured drinks! I've been here quite a few times to see some truly amazing acts like Dave Chappelle-post South African getaway with Josh Blue as his surprise opener. That's what I'm talking about! This place is titsgolden when it comes to booking! The ticket prices aren't out of control and the 2-item minimum is kind of standard fare at comedy venues. I think I need to employ a 2-drink maximum for my liver. Oh yeah, don't order food at a comedy club. Do you really need to be told that? There's an underground parking garage across the street at Writer's Square that is $6 or something after 5PM and apparently you can get your parking ticket validated at the club so it's only $4. Not bad for downtown parking. The servers and bartenders are great here: very friendly, FAST and they pour a nice, strong cocktail. My only issue with this joint is that even if you stand near the front of the line to be seated, you aren't guaranteed a good seat because they stagger the people in line between rows. For example, the couple right in front of me sat in the 3nd row and I ended up sitting a few rows behind them. That's some bullshit! Also, if you want to sit in the front, you have to call ahead and reserve the seats. It's kind of a tight squeeze too, but that just makes it intimate...right? Here's the end of my criticism sandwich: the emcees here are fan-fucking-tastic! Chuck Roy was the masterful wizard host at the last 2 shows I've been to and his material is awesome. Comedy Works is a great comedy club that competes with Vegas comedy clubs in terms of headliners! Here is the downfall of the Comedy Club. There is a 2 item minimum which is normal for a comedy club, but the food is horrible. If you charge $20 a ticket and the seats are crammed together...at least offer some decent food. The seating is always horrible and the balancing act it takes to hold your basket of fries, basket of chicken fingers and to drinky our drink without spilling it on yourself or the person next to you is impressive! I enjoy going there because I am always in tears from laughing so hard, but if you are reading this MR. COMEDY WORKS MGMT, please improve the food and seating!! I give this place 4 stars for always making me laugh, but never improving the environment for customers. read more

Two drink requirement = -2 stars right off the bat. I hate getting nickeled and dimed. I'd rather have just paid $10 more per ticket. This was my 2nd time here. Just like last time, it was too cramped. The chairs were just as uncomfortable. And, they've got a real temperature control problem there. It was pretty dang chilly, and I like being cold 95% of the time. I'd rather be cold than hot any day, but I kept my jacket on. The comics were average. I laughed more earlier in the day reading jokes off the internet. Save yourself some cash-o-la, give yourself your own 2 drink minimum, snuggle up on your couch and watch funny youtube videos. You'll laugh just as much, not have to smell 150 other people, won't have to deal with drunk-guy & friends behind you, drinks will be cheaper, and you will have a lot more room. Yea the venue was small and packed, just like every other comedy club I've been to. the two drink min reminded me of cheesy strip club and when I got downstairs and saw how small and cramped it was I was glad it wasn't one.that started me out with a little laugh. They have a great line up of big names coming and going. laughter is good for the soul, but bad for a big fat guy my stomach and sides hurt in the AM. One of the premier comedy clubs in the country, and by far the best one in the state (except maybe the other Comedy Works). To the other reviewers complaining about the cramped first-come-first-serve seating and the 2 drink minimum....... Obviously you are a newbie when it comes to comedy clubs. It's ok, I forgive your blatant ignorance. But next time, know the culture before leaving ignorant Yelp reviews. They always book the best comedians and every show I've seen here has had 3-4 opening sets who are usually really funny. Including the house comedian Chuck Roy, he is the best! Tickets are always very reasonably priced, I don't think I've ever seen it top $30, even for the most popular comedians that come through there. I paid $75 to see Daniel Tosh at the Paramount Theater..... So everybody can shut up about the 2 drink minimum, the low ticket price off-sets that. They even let ages 18+ in for their late Friday show. Most comedy clubs are very strictly 21+ every day with no exceptions. read more

AWFUL. DON'T GO HERE. Rude, terrible service, and they lie and treat you like trash if you don't want to order their crappy weak drinks. And they pack you together like sardines in little tiny chairs which was super uncomfortable for everyone in our party. It was like being in the middle seat on a Spirit Airlines flight. I called several times to find out ticket prices, availability, policies, etc. No answer. So I drove across town to find out and there was nobody working at the box office while a line of customers formed. Phone ringing off the hook, with two employees standing ten feet away chatting with each other and letting the phone ring ring ring. So we buy our tickets and go downstairs where they confiscated our phones. I tried to explain that I'm not hungry, and I don't want anything to drink. They didn't care and gave me ridiculous responses as to why I had to. Here's their favorite: "CLUB POLICY STATES THAT YOU MUST PURCHASE TWO ITEMS OFF OUR MENU. EVERY COMEDY CLUB IN THE COUNTRY DOES THIS." That's funny because NO comedy club I've ever been to in this city, or any other city, pulls that crap. This was my second time there and will be my last (the first was 5 years ago, I hoped they'd gotten better - they got worse).
