This place has surprisingly good food at a very low price! It is hard to find though, it's located within the grocery store, and you have to go up a flight of stairs and around quite a bit of stores to get there (which all look a bit shady because of how empty the other stores are). The restaurant isn't exactly the cleanest or best looking either, but if you can get past that, you can get excellent food at a low cost. We had the Bun Cha Ha Noi and the daily meal of the day (which came with clay pot fish, sour soup, and rice and pickled veggies). Both items were on the $6-7 range and were both filling and delicious. The Bun Cha was excellent, nicely grilled with an excellent blend of sauces. The veggies were fresh and everything was solidly made. The clay pot fish was exceptionally good, having the rich flavors of a good clay pot fish while also being soft and having a melt in your mouth quality. I went to the Saigon Capital supermarket food court looking to try Chef Peter Hung's banh xeo cause I came across an old OC Weekly article. They weren't open until 5 so we ended up wandering to Com Viet, which has both hallway seating, an enclosed seating area, and according to my brother, he spotted a restaurant downstairs. They weren't any cheaper for their secluded location, cause this is Little Saigon and the competition be fierce. We got the cha ca thang long - sizzling fish w/ turmeric & dill ($10, no longer $7 like in previous reviews and in the giant ad-board behind the cashier), pho bo vien - beef meatball rice noodle soup($6.50), and banh bot chien - rice flour squares fried with egg ($5). The fish was dry to me, like it was fried a little too long; it was good for the crunch, not for the moisture. Plus, the mix of it wasn't really thorough, so the dill flavor wasn't there. The pho was OK; there wasn't that much of it, and it's not a specialty store, but it did take the longest to come out, so I think it's fresh. Lastly, my favorite was the banh bot chien, they cut it thin so every bite was beautifully crunchy. So that's the only dish I'd recommend here. So, 3 stars for taste, value, and service. Knocked one more star off as a combination of 2 things: I saw a Square cashier, but they told my dad they don't take card (which doesn't square with Tracy N's review). Also, charging for water wasn't mentioned on the menu, but they do charge 50 cents per, although they do put it into a to-go cup so you can take it with you, which I appreciate as a new thing that some of the places that charge for water do now. read more

I usually order the Bun Cha Ha Noi and the hot pot (sweet & sour seafood). The price are really good. $6.50 for Bun Cha Na Noi and $12 Small hot pot. The place it is a "help yourself to a table" so don't wait to be seated because that won't happen. It felt kinda like vietnamese. If you eat in the summer, beware it can get hot there. Came here since the family was looking to eat broiled catfish. The restaurant is located on the 2nd floor of a grocery store. Casual environment with plenty of seating. The menu is small with less than 10 items. They mainly served broiled catfish or sweet/sour catfish hotpot. The catfish skin was amazingly crispy. The fish meat was too mushy and lack some firmness texture that I was hoping for. When the fish meat is too mushy, it usually means that it's old. They offered 3 dipping sauces: the fermented crab/fish sauce with pineapple was too salty and has too much odor. The the seasoned fish sauce was not well balance: too salty instead of a balance between salty, sweet and sour. The tamarin sauce was diluted and lacks body. All 3 sauces was poorly made. You park in the back and walk up a flight of stairs. I know it sounds a little sketchy but trust me... Your tastebuds will love you forever. The restaurant is quiet, not packed at all. You sit down wherever you'd like and a woman greets you with menus. Drinks are served almost immediately. And my friends mother knowing what she wanted, ordered for us. She ordered me Bun Cha Ha Noi. It was unforgettable. It's marinated beef, with white noodles, and a side of greens. You combine all of it, and suddenly you open the tastebud gates to heaven. So good!!!! Since then I've been coming as a regular as well. I always get the same thing. It's just so yummy! My mouth is watering just thinking about it. Hahaha! Definitely book mark this place. This is my new fav place for Vietnamese food! They have a cool variety of Vietnamese authentic dishes and their menu changes every week to offer more and more amazing dishes. My friends and I go here almost every week and we're all impressed with all the items we have tried so far: everyday meal combos, hotpot, pork udon, fried taro cake, chicken rice, bún Ha Noi, etc. None of them disappointed me. This is probably the best Vietnamese restaurant you never visited. It is hidden on the second floor of a grocery store. When I was led here by my friend, I was half expecting a smoke filled room with people gambling (as Hollywood often depicted). Instead, there were several restaurants side by side, including the Com Viet place. My friend ordered the hot pot. It was served with a boiling pot of hot broth and a generous serving of fresh veggies. The broth is slightly on the spicy side and very aromatic, with cooked seafood in it. Each guest were to prepare their own dishes by laying the base of rice noodles, then pour cooked veggie, seafood, and broth on top. The simple combination created amazingly appetizing bowls of noodle soup. Each hot pot could easily feed a party of 3-4. All in all, I highly recommend this place if you feel like something new and possess an adventures spirit. read more

This is such a great little place above the supermarket. If your parents aren't willing to make you that good homemade Vietnamese food and you can't make it as well as they can, then com viet is the place for you. Honestly, I can't speak Vietnamese above a 3rd grade level and 90% of the menu was strictly Vietnamese. The best thing about this place is the pictures that they have. I had no shame and I started pointing to pictures on the walls and menu and even yelp to order. The servers were so nice. I was expecting the service here to be like most other Asian food places in the area, but the waiter and waitress came to check in on my group multiple times. Their prices are sooo cheap. It's only 9.99 for a hot pot that can feed two (we split it between three people and we were all satisfied). I also ordered the chicken wings and they were fried to perfection. They were crunchy on the outside and juicy on the inside. Another great thing about this place is they deliver for $2 more. BEWARE. worst experience ever and I'm not just talking about the usual bad service. That's a given here and I never rate based on that. I'll start by saying this place is shady as f**** for a few reasons: 1) We came here to try a few dishes, namely pho Kobe and the grill fish. We asked the workers and they said this is all the same place/owner and that the pho Kobe is not good because it's fake and won't let us order it. Another worker told us the Kobe place was here but the owner isn't in yet....we walked over and guess what? Pho akaushi was open and the owner was there, wtf. Lying to customers so people won't eat at their competition. Com Viet also serves pho so I'm not surprised if people came looking for pho Kobe and eat their pho not knowing better or being lied to.... 2) we ordered blood clams. We got regular clams. And they kept pressing that it was blood clams. I'm sorry we know what blood clams are and have eaten it numerous times and that was not blood clams!! 3) the regular clams we got were super super chewy. I chewed mine for 5 mins and it was still not where close to being in a condition I can swallow without chocking to death. 4) they charged us $0.50 per order of water without even saying anything when we ordered. Again, shady as f 5) they kept refusing to not charge us for the inedible "blood clams". I confronted them about it and they tried to give excuses: A) It's supposed to be tough to chew like that. Our Response: it's not...blood clams aren't like that. Even it it was this isn't even edible, how do you expect anyone to pay for this. B) the box we bought said it was blood clams. Our response: it's not our problem you gave us regular clams instead of blood clams. We ordered blood clams. Doesn't matter what your "box" said. Any way, the grilled catfish was on par with other places but the sauce was way too sweet...so I'll give them 1 star for that. Waste of time, energy and money. So far i've had the Bun cha ha noi (Hanoi style BBQ pork with vermicelli and veggies) and the Bun thit nuong cha gio (Grilled pork, eggrolls, veggies, and vermicelli). I have been living in Orange County for 7 years and have never heard of this place. My mom heard about it from her friends and we decided to give it a try. It is definitely a hole in the wall restaurant, but the food quality is amazing. I had to get an order of com phan, which is rice with soup and 2 side dishes. My side dishes were braised mackerel with pineapple, some stir-fried Chinese broccoli with ground pork, and a vegetable soup. The fish tasted just like how my mom would make it, which had a sweet and salty sauce, and the fish was really moist and fatty. The Chinese broccoli tasted nice and fresh; the same could be said about the soup. My mom also ordered com phan, but with a fried salmon steak in tomato sauce, and canh chua which literally translates to sour soup. The salmon was nice and moist, and went really well with the salty tomato sauce. The canh chua was sour, fresh, and full of vegetables. My brother ordered bun cha, which is grilled pork slices and patties in a bowl of sweet fish sauce and pickles. It is served with vermicelli, hence the name bun (vermicelli) cha (meat), and a plate of vegetables and herbs. The best bun cha place in OC is arguably Ha Noi Avenue located near the Westminster and Newland intersection, and the bun cha here is just as good. The pork slices were juicy, and had a smoky sweet flavor from being grilled and soaked in the sauce. The pork patties could use a little more char on the grill, but they were still pretty good. We also ordered a plate of bot chien (pan fried rice cake with eggs and green onions). The rice cakes was golden, crispy on the outside, but soft and sweet in middle. It also had a sauce, which contains soy sauce and vinegar, and some pickled radish and carrot. Bot chien here has a fresh rice aroma to it, which is what you want to have in a good plate of bot chien. Last but not least, we had a plate of tamarind wings. The name said it all; chicken wings in a tamarind glaze. They tasted exactly like canh ga chien nuoc mam (fish sauce wings) with some added tamarind sauce. These wings were sweet, sour, and salty. They were not bad, and would probably be a good drinking snack. This place is hidden gem in Orange County food scene. The food is great, and really affordable. We ordered 6 items for a total of $27 . The taste reminded me of the lunch spots on the sidewalk in Vietnam a lot. I feel so ashamed that I had not come to this place for the past 7 years. This is the worst place in USA to eat out. We, 4 people, arrived at 11:00am order 3 rice cake, 1 fish drill, and 4 hot tea, after the waiter informed us banh xeo was not available because the chief for banh xeo would not arrive until noon. 40 minutes later, nothing was served, not even hot tea. We asked for the waiter only to be informed that nothing was made yet...They could not made rice cake (Why? If they could not make the disk, why did they NOT inform us so we can choose another or leave?....40 MINUTES). 5 minutes later, they served teas (45 minutes for some instant tea cups). 10 minutes after that, fish drill was service (55 minutes for the first disk). NO rice cake was served yet, so I checked on their kitchen. What I found was 3 people in the kitchen yell at each others, but NOBODY cooked anything. GREAT PLACE? Around noon, Banh Xeo chief arrived. The waiter asked us if we wanted to drop rice cake orders because rice cake have not yet been made. Great.....We agreed to replace 2 rice cake and order 2 Banh Xeo. 15 minutes later, 2 banh xeo was service. Still NO RICE CAKE. I checked the kitchen again. The cook told me that they had dropped the rice cake (all 3 of them) and replaced them with Banh Xeo, but only 2 Banh Xeo was served. I asked the waiter, the waiter said he forgot the order. He said they current renovate the shop, they was busy, so he forgot the order. Why did he NOT write the order down if he could not remember it? If he could not remember the order or had anything written down, how can they calculate the bill? Another Question: IF THE SHOP UNABLE TO SERVE CUSTOMER, WHY WOULD THEY OPEN THE SHOP? IF THEY OPEN THE SHOP, SHOULD CUSTOMER EXPECT TO BE SERVED CORRECTLY (forget about high standard, we just want to be served correctly)? At 12:25pm, the rice cake was finally served. The Banh Xeo chief came out and said, "I am apology. The shop is opened at 11:00am." I am apology too, It was 12:25pm. Did he think we were too stupid to tell the time? We thought the ordeal end there, but it was not. When I paid the bill, they overcharge by a large about, compared with what we estimated to pay. I asked for a detail charge. Guess what? They indeed overcharged us. The bill included 2 rice cakes, 2 Banh Xeo, 1 fish drill, drinks, and taxes. What we was served only 1 rice cake, 2 banh xeo, 1 fish drill, and 4 hot teas.
