I don't order anything except com tam here, I didn't even know there was any thing else besides com tam when I came back for the first time in years lol This place is usually packed but somehow the wait isn't that long for a table or even to order. It does get confusing when ordering for a big party but it's all worth it. My go-to com tam has to include thit nuong (grilled pork) with bi, cha and tofu ky. I have lots of experience many years for eating noodles. In OC, i have not seen any noodle that has a fantastic bowl of noodle as Thanh. The egg noodle is very chewy and moist just like the one in VN. Flat rice noodle is fresh and soft and moist as well as the one in VN too. Soup is clear and tasty enough to be called Hu tieu mi. I love this bowl and you should try! Even Thanh is a com tam restaurant but their noodles are far more than many other restaurants where specialize in selling noodles. Here at Thanh Restaurant, the rice dish comes exactly like how it would be served in Vietnam! The place is always crowded at lunch and I always see people order the obvious dish, com tam here. This place has made me a fan of com tam/ broken rice! It's a very unassuming place without any flashy signs or banners to alert you to the wonderful food that is held within. In fact, it gives off a very hole-in-the-wall type of vibe. But, when we entered, we were not expecting for it to be as big as it was. I'm not sure how they crammed so many tables inside, but most were intended for larger parties. I get the feeling this is a very popular destination for families and maybe even church groups. I ordered the largest broken rice entree - Com tam with BBQ pork, shrimp mousseline in tofu paper, steamed pork cake, and Chinese sausage (#34, $9.95). I had broken rice in every bite and just couldn't get enough of it! I don't know what it is about it, but it's so soft and fluffy and I feel like it's also sweeter. It made all portions of the meal more satisfying! This restaurant is located in a strip mall with other Asian businesses. Parking lot was busy when we rolled in around lunch on a Friday so be wary! I had been recommended this restaurant by my Yelp friend Van D. who claims that this place has the best Com Tam aka broken rice dishes. What is broken rice anyways? How do they break it? So confused! Anyways this place is located off the corner of Brookhurst and Bolsa. The parking is horrible. I felt pretty lost, but apparently I was in the right place. The restaurant itself is located in a corner. So I was seated and they handed me a menu. Van D. told me to try the #10 with a fried egg but the English description was so confusing I had to call her to make sure I was ordering the right thing. Long story short I called her and she ordered for me over the phone. This #10 was such a mystery! The Vietnamese writing calls it the Com Tam Tau Hu Ky Suon Nuong hoac Thit Nuong, which was translated to "Broken rice with Shrimp Mousseline in Tofu Paper and BBQ Pork Chop or BBQ Pork." I got the boneless version and it was pretty good. The shrimp mousselini was definitely more pleasant than I imagined. That fried egg was a great recommendation and it really made this dish tie together. The meal actually come with a complimentary broth-like soup as well. I was stuffed after eating all this food!! Overall a really good meal at an inexpensive price. Cash only here! However if I'm in this general area I probably would rather go to Luc Dinh Ky for the Shaken Beef since the ladies there are really sweet and I love their free herbal tea. I've eaten here since I moved here in '97 and am in love with it! The broken rice with pork chop is like my comfort food. I've had dates here even and don't care what she thinks. Sorry but if you can't get along with my home away from home then we have no future together. I was in the parking lot of Com Tam Thuan Kieu ready to get lunch when my friend, the salesman, calls and asks me if I wanted to join him for lunch. Anyhow, being the smart guy that I am, I knew that he would be buying my lunch. There was no way that I could say "No". We met at the parking and drove to a shopping center at the corner of Bolsa and Brookhurst, to Thanh Restaurant. We arrived at a little before 1 PM. The restaurant was about 3/4 full. We were quickly seated and given a menu. Before I knew it, it was time to order. The salesman didn't give me a chance. He ordered everything in Vietnamese, without asking me what I wanted. A few minutes later, they bring out 2 plates of com tam that appeared loaded with meat. I got a plate with a pork chop, a pork patty, tau hu ky, cha, and a fried egg. He got a plate with a pork chop, cha, and a fried egg. Both plate came with pickled cabbage. He also asked for extra fried pork fat for us. The pork fat came in a small bowl and was full of grease. The food came out so fast, that I suspect that this is another place where the food is prepared beforehand. It is impossible to cook at that stuff up within 3 minutes. The pork chop was marinated and grilled perfectly. It was nice and moist, not dry like others that I have tried. The tau hu ky and cha were both pretty good. I have never ordered com tam with an sunny-side up egg. I liked it. I wasn't a fan of the pork patty. The pickled cabbage tasted good to me. The pork rinds, rice, and the fish sauce was a magical combination. Overall, I thought the food was okay, especially since I didn't have to pay. I don't think I would bring my family here, as the restaurant was not clean. My wife would have a fit here. I can't comment about the service or the prices. Best broken rice dish in Westminster! Meat is savory and tender. Rice is moist. Get the fried egg on top and it's a perfect dish! Aside from their renown rice dish, definately try the banh canh. It wasn't until I walked up to the cashier, politely asked if I could take some menues for my table that someone came over to take our order lol. Service from there on was quick and efficient =P. Sometimes you gotta speak up. I ordered the Com Bo Luc Lac - the rest of my party ordered Com Tam dishes. The thing with Com tam is there are several different types of meat/entrees you can get it with. "Bi" - by the way is shredded pork skin - so just a quick heads up lol. The tau hu ky (fried tofu cake) is amazingly good here. If you like beef - try the thit nuong - which is seasoned beef strips. Besides the service (which is typical for a authentic Vietnamese restaurant), the food here is tasty, filling and cheap. A plate + beverage runs you at about $9 per person. Parking CAN be a disaster at times, but you can just park at the plaza "next door" (where the Luc Dinh Ky restaurant is located and walk over. read more

Man, at first finding this place on yelp was hella hard. This was one spot where I relied on my friend to show me after a night of partying. She said the broken rice and pork here was amazing, which is GREAT comfort food to get all of that alcohol out of your system. This place really is a hole in the wall. There is a large sign outside "COM TAM" and is in the corner of one of many Vietnamese plazas in Westminster. When you enter, there is a clipboard where you put your name and # of people in your party. They'll call you once they are ready to seat you because this place is packed for a Sunday brunch. I ordered the #28 "Com Tam Bi Cha Suon Trung Chien," which had broken rice, a BBQ pork chop, Julienne pork, and fried egg. Service wasn't too bad for a busy day, and they started off by giving us complimentary soup. Also, water is free here, so no worries about being charged a ridiculous amount for it. When the food came, I was chowing down! It was GOOD! The pork was a bit on the dry side, but everything else on the plate complimented it very well. The meal came with clear soup and was a generous amount of food, so I only ate half and took the rest to go. This stuff is delicious! I tried some of my brother's BBQ pork, too, and it was beautifully seasoned and very tasty. I enjoyed how all the food was already seasoned, but then the flavors were even further heightened by the fragrant sweet fish sauce that came on the side. My sister-in-law's parents also ordered a topping of what looked like green onions and crispy pork skin, so that was an even further decadent topping to add to our dish. Haha. I like to try a variety of things, so I'm glad I got the combo plate. But my favorite of the three things I ordered was definitely the pork chop. Extremely flavorful and juicy and not dry. I was pleasantly surprised and wouldn't hesitate to get it again. The steamed pork cake was okay, looked a bit like steamed egg cake. This is mine and my family's favorite Com Tam place. I order the Com Tam Tau Hu Ky (broken rice with bean curd wrapped shrimp) every time and it has never failed me, not once, not ever. The tau hu ky is prepared with the right amount of crisp, the broken rice is soft and moist, and the savory nuoc mam (fish sauce) brings the whole dish together harmoniously. I love the small pieces of fried fat they cook with green onions, so delicious! If you're looking for dessert to finish your meal, order the Che Ba Mau (mung bean, red kidney beans, green jelly, coconut milk). Don't let the vibrant colors steer you away from trying it, it's a definite must. They prepare it in a cup with crushed up ice and it's never overly sweet.
