DEFINITELY come in if you are trying to quit smoking because a deal this good makes me think these games will sell out fast.

Waited a few days and finally got an offer on my cards. Offer was ridiculously low. I said no thanks, I'll come get my cards. As soon as I said I wasn't interested Steve was rude over the phone. Tried arguing with me about the value of the cards, their condition, etc. I told him I wasn't interested in arguing and would simply come get my cards. Went in an hour later and Lo and behold, some were missing. I mentioned this to Steve. I noticed his hands were obviously shaking. As soon as I said something about the missing cards he got extremely defensive. He acted like I had accused him directly (which I did not, I understand mistakes sometimes happen). He then tried to escalate the situation, raising his voice in the crowded store and yelling at me in front of dozens of people. It was Friday night, they were hosting a game night. Steve continued to yell at me, even as I walked out. Unprofessionalism, cards disappearing, and insultingly low offers seem to be par for the course, judging by the reviews. I'll be going to Guardian Games from now on.

Noice! Upon entering, I was greeted cordially by the person at the counter, given a tour of the shop, and an explanation of their (mostly secondhand, but high quality) business model that allows them to undercut other shops, as well as the predatory pricing of certain miniature manufacturers (if you're a wargamer, you know who I'm talking about). Everything from RPG books, figurines, paints, board games, dice, toys and accessories can be found within, new and/or used, and if you're okay with a gently loved, open box copy of whatever it is you're looking for, it's likely going to be a steal of a deal! Lucky Breaks may be a smaller card shop, but it packs a lot into the space. What really separates…read morethis shop from others in the area, though, is the customer service. Jim and Tanya, the owners, have created the kind of local card shop where you can stop in, talk cards, bring your kids, and actually enjoy spending some time without feeling rushed. As a parent, that matters to me. My boys are 11 and 6, and both are really into Pokémon. Jim and Tanya have always taken the time to talk cards with them, answer their questions, and treat them like collectors rather than just kids tagging along with their parents. My boys regularly bring friends into the shop, and one thing I have consistently noticed is that every kid gets treated the same, whether they are spending $5 or looking at a card worth hundreds. That kind of atmosphere is becoming harder to find, and it is a big reason we keep coming back. The Pokémon selection is solid, especially when it comes to singles. Sealed product can sometimes be limited because of distribution and availability, but there are usually plenty of cards in the cases to look through. Salva is their Pokémon guy, and it does not take long to realize he is a collector himself. He knows the hobby and actually enjoys talking about it. I also appreciate that Lucky Breaks does not focus exclusively on the newest sets. You can usually find a good mixture of modern, mid-era, and vintage Pokémon, which gives collectors more variety. Their Magic selection is pretty good as well. They recently brought in Josh, and he seems to know his stuff. More importantly, you can tell he genuinely enjoys the hobby. That enthusiasm makes a difference because nobody wants to ask a question and feel like they are bothering the person behind the counter. Another thing I appreciate is that Jim will actually try to find something if you are looking for a particular card or product. He is straightforward, easy to work with, and his buying percentages are fair. Around 70% cash is reasonable for a brick-and-mortar LCS when you consider the overhead that comes with operating a physical store. I have always felt like the deals were fair on both sides. Overall, Lucky Breaks is a great local card shop with good people behind the counter. It may not be the biggest shop around, and it may not always have mountains of sealed Pokémon product, but it makes up for that with a good singles selection, fair deals, knowledgeable people, and excellent customer service. For me, the biggest selling point is still how they treat the kids. A good card shop should do more than buy and sell cardboard. It should help build the hobby, create relationships, and make the next generation of collectors excited to come back. Lucky Breaks does that exceptionally well, and that is why it continues to be one of our favorite local shops.
