This place is fantastic. I go here every week. Probably because I have a membership, but yanno whatever. Great selection, great $1 boxes, personable and friendly employees. I did some research on all the local shops near my place before deciding where to have my membership and this one definitely rose to the top of the list. If you're like me and really want to be able to adjust your list via email instead of by phone, they've got you. Total selling point. Dunno who the people are complaining about the owner, he's always been perfectly professional when I've been around. And the other folx who work there are just the best. Guess you can't please all the people all the time, or whatever. Also, whoever keeps breaking in and stealing stuff should really knock it off. Had a family member pass and they had a comic book collection , called around and Tasteecat invited me to come in and they be glad to look them over . Arrived next day with 3 boxes worth , they spent 30-60 mins looking them over was willing to give me an appraisal value but he also made me a offer for the entire collection , I felt it was good for us both and accepted. Was pleased on the way it was handled from 1st call to the end. Nice interesting shop had fun thumbing through it as well. read more

This shop has a decent selection but nothing out of the ordinary for an average comic shop. My main complaint is the attitude of the running the place. His attitude towards me and other customers was terrible. He acted so pretentious and annoyed to the questions people asked him it seemed like a movie and not an actual real place. read more

I love this little shop so much. Its coming up on its five year anniversary and i hope it is around for many more years to come. They almost always have what I am looking for and even if they dont, they can bring it in for you if you want to support local instead of buying online. I like spending my money there for things that arent out of print and such. The owner is great as well and clearly a fan of comics. I go in periodically when I have no clue what I want to read but have an itch to buy something. He always has an answer for my questions and about 10 great recommendations for things I might like. If you're looking for new comics, then this might be an ok place. Or graphic novels and omni-busses. There was a fairly good selection there as well. As for back issues, just don't even bother. Going in to see about recent back issues of some off-beat Spider-man comics, there was nothing. In fact, SM was in two different places (possibly more) in the store. I guess the owner is a stickler on alphabetization. It makes it difficult to find things unless the intent is to have your pour over every box in the store. I did get a 'hello' when I entered, however it was an off-hand one without the guy even looking up. As it's a small store, and NO customers except me in it, when I had wandered around for awhile trying to find a lot of back issues I had written down to try and find, he finally asked if he could help. I read off the list of titles, and was told that no, there was no way he would have those. Seriously? When I saw terribly old (and not sought after by any means with $2 and $3 stickers on them) comics there and titles that were not mainstream by any means. So selection sucks, customer service is slightly condescending, and if the owner happens to read this, fix the front door? .... read more

This is an excellent spot for the classic neighborhood comic shop experience. Although it's a relatively small space they make the most of it with very well-organized and well-maintained shelves. This shop has none of the dust covered piles of boxes in a dark claustrophobic dungeon that is the unfortunate stereotype of old skool comic shops. I'm a very casual comic reader. I don't follow any particular series so I usually walk in with the intention of just browsing and walk out with a new favorite graphic novel. The staff have always been very helpful in aiding me with navigating their selection and you can't go wrong with any of the rotating "staff picks" on display. They don't have much in the way of older stock so if you're on the hunt for a rare first edition of a forgotten comic line you'll have to look elsewhere. But if you're in search of a place to get informed advice on what's new in the world of comics then this is your spot. read more

Fortuitously, this place is right down the street from me. It reminds me of the shops I went to in my youth - long rows of back issue bins, lots of collectors issues, wide assortment of superhero comics. Since I'm getting into DC stuff and back into comics in general, it works for me. The owner is a cool guy, and the other dude I've talked to there is nice as well. The store is well lit, the aisles are easy to traverse, and their selection of trades is good. The only potential downer I could see is that there doesn't seem to be a big selection of indie or manga stuff, which I could see being a turn-off to younger collectors. But if you're someone who, like me is getting into Marvel/DC/Image, then this place is probably perfect for you. read more

I recently visited this shop with my two sons who have become quite interested in comic books lately. I had read some reviews mentioning lackluster customer service but that is NOT the experience we had at all. We were cheerfully greeting the minute we walked in. It is a small shop but packed to the gills. My kids started browsing but there's so much to see, that it is a bit overwhelming. I suggested that my 12 yr old go to the counter and ask the guy there for the specific comics he was looking for. The guy at the counter was SO ENTHUSIASTIC about showing my son where the comic was located, however, he had just sold the last copy of the one we were after. He took our number and said he would call as soon as it was in stock. He then proceeded to take my son around and show him similar comics to the one he wanted and when I say my kid was over the moon thrilled with this place...it was really cool to see him get so excited. The guy working was really good with my kids and you can tell he is a real fan of comics because he was genuinely excited to show them things he thought they would like. I wish I had got his name....not sure if he is the owner or an employee but he made a customer for life of my 12 yr old. That is a feat in itself because we all know how 12 year olds are. read more

Kind of a mess. Not dirty, I mean, but the posters all the wall were all stuck up with office thumbtacks, there was unopened stock piled up in the corner, and some of the Ikea shelves had been put in backwards. The guy at the counter was friendly enough, but he didn't even give me a shopping bag for $100+ worth of hardcovers. And what's with the sales being hand-tallied on paper and taking ten times longer than any other comics shop in the city? It's all the little things that suggest the owner's decided to stop at "good enough" and hasn't bothered to try and really make the place shine. That said, the reason the place gets three stars for an "ok" rating is that they occasionally have huge, crazy sales, like 25% or 50% off most of the stuff in the store. First visit today as an old-school collector, and former shop owner myself. The owner was helpful, and pleasant without 'overdoing it', but equally important to me is that it's clear Cloud 9 know their comic business. Noting that the shop serves as an advisor to Overstreet's Price guide, I expected properly graded books priced accordingly, and was not disappointed. For the more casual enthusiast, there is a very solid selection of graphic novels, and new stuff is racked clearly. I also appreciated that the store is fairly balanced in terms of publishers--many stores have a clear bias to being primarily DC, Marvel, or Indy. Cloud 9 manages to strike a very nice balance and serves up something for everyone on the recommended reading racks. It seemed obvious that the shop is a reader-first operation, and I would go further in saying the staff seem to have exceptional taste based on what got racked, and where they placed it. A very nice experience top to bottom at a high-quality shop, and I plan on returning. read more

My primary hobby is collecting comic books, and in Portland my main stores are Cloud 9 and Excalibur. At Cloud 9 you will find comic books in the best condition in town. You may pay a little more than the other stores in the area, but you are getting extremely nice copies of books. At the same time, this is the only place that really has a deep catalogue of Golden Age books, so if you're interested in investment grade books from that era, this is your go-to. They also have a fantastic selection of Silver Age to Modern era books. And, Ken has a great selection in his dollar bins, if you want to get a bunch of books for your children or are looking to explore some new reading material. read more

Cute little comic shop among a variety of other boutiques and restaurants that seems to complement the neighborhood vibe well. The selection is fantastic: from vintage collectibles from the golden age to various cheap $1 issues, anyone could find something to pick up. We personally got a couple of series for about $8/series and were not disappointed. Items were in great condition. Most comic shops are very similar in that they focus mainly on moving current comics, and if they have a back catalog its an added bonus. Cloud 9 separates itself from the pack by showcasing back-issues and catering to the hard-core collector. If you have gaps in your collections from 60's-90's you have a pretty good chance of either finding it here, and if not, the staff could more than likely procure it for you. Its really important to know going in that you aren't going to find any rack of fresh monthlies, but you might find yourself down a rabbit hole on memory lane. This is one of very few boutique comic shops that deal in a steady flow of golden and silver age books, so if that's what you need, here is where to go! read more
