This place is a real gem. Tons of comics- rare, local, indie, classics, the whole works! I love all of the Showa-era retro paraphernalia they carry too, although I do find those to be a little bit over-priced. That said, I usually come in here to kill time thinking I won't buy anything, but then I find something amazing and can't resist because I know it'd be just about impossible to get anywhere else... Last time I managed to find a volume of エコエコアザラク (Eko Eko Azarak). They also sell some of my favorite art books, like Curses by George Wylesol and Vermis by Plastiboo... If you're interested in manga, it's definitely worth visiting. I've seen them selling works by some of my favorite classic mangaka like Leiji Matsumoto, Shigeru Mizuki, Kazuo Umezu, Junji Ito, etc. and they even have things like GARO magazine back issues lying around. read more

I think I heard it's in Lloyd center probably year or 2 ago, but last year I take a good look at it, that is I'm surprised that Kanegon from Ultraman series & when I look around this comic book that it's not comic but there's also some a bunch of retro stuff from Japan & some Ultraman stuffs. This shop was listed as a place to check out in a New York Times Travel Book I had bought a few years ago. I'm not a big comic person. I know Marvel and DC characters thanks to the movies and that's about it but my BFF loves comic books and graphic novels so I wanted to see if I could find her something special. What's cool about this place is they are not just a shop, they also publish local writers/artists and the employees were more than happy to provide a lot of recommendations, so I got her a handful of local zines and books for a very reasonable price, plus the staff advised if there is something she likes, she can order more issues through their site. read more

I only went inside of one retailer in Chinatown and it was here. The staff was welcoming coming in and going out. They have ample inventory of new mainstream and indie comics, which makes this a cool LCS (local comic shop). I saw the dollar bins in the back too with old back issues at discounts, so there might be diamonds in the rough there, but it could be like finding a needle in a haystack too, but if you have the time to look through the inventory it could be fun and rewarding. If they relocated to a better area, I'd imagine this place could really thrive, or rather, if the area they're in, improved this place is representative of the type of good business that should reside in the area, as it's well kept, organized and nice. read more

Visiting Portland, we have had stopped at this comic store several times before flying back home. I seriously don't have comic stores like this in my hometown. Great staff, very knowledgeable and kind enough to offer us help whenever needed. First stop here was the good ol' dollar book shelves located in the back. They have a wide variety of anime goodies. They sold rare art books by studio ghibli which made me excited. I bought a manga by Junji Ito here, I seriously can't even find these books at a Barnes & Noble. Love, love, this place. Floating World Comics is an institution for comic shops. Solid for current issues, recent back issues, and trades. But where this place really shines is on the indie scene. From indie comics, zines, and even art books. And even records, toys, pins, and more eclectic goodies. The vibe here is incredibly laid back, supporting individuality, without coming off as pretentious. The staff is always helpful and willing to provide some great recommendations not just for comics, but for anything in the shop. On my most recent trip, I walked away with a new art book from their self-published line featuring an 80s sci fi throwback style. Really cool! Every time I come to Portland, while I have every comic shop bookmarked, Floating World is one I always hit up. And given it's location, you can also hit up Powell's and the other great downtown spots! read more

Wonderful comic shop with an excellent selection and extremely helpful staff. Although I'm not much of a comics expert myself, a friend who is an avid fan of some series had me looking for some issues of favorite comics of his. Although we had trouble locating these comics in my hometown, Floating World had several issues of two different comics that allowed him to fill big gaps in his collection. The woman working at the front desk was extremely helpful and patient as I bumbled through an explanation of what he was looking for, and her help greatly sped up the process, especially since my friend was not present at the time. I'd definitely come back here next time I'm looking for comics. The only question I have: what happened to the vinyl in the dumpster that was there when I visited a few years ago? read more

For a variety of reasons I have problems with plastic. Plastic People. Plastic Bags. Plastic Credit Cards. I especially dislike how comics are wrapped in it at most shops. It sucks to find series with great cover art and lame innards. Plus it's an inorganic barrier to interaction. It's a little thing, that when I drifted into Floating World Comics I found out was too me actually quite big. Here you're welcome to browse, to sample, to take cursory or pervasive reads. No plastic here. I loved the opportunity to linger and discover new writers and artist, to comfortably get a feel for a series before committing cash. Jason, the owner, is also a wealth of comic book knowledge and a chill dude to talk with in general. After briefly discussing a few of my favorites (Fables, 100 Bullets, Gotham Central, Okko, X Force, and Demo) he quickly offered up some other series I might like (Walking Dead, Criminal, The Killer). Additionally there's a wealth of reading material here for the design oriented, creatively minded. Art books. Design books. Magazines. Andrea asked if I needed anything and proceeded to tell me a little about the comic book shop. She notified me that there was an event happening that evening and I should check it out. I felt as if she was a long lost friend and we've just reunited. Hahaha! The shop was starting to pick up with foot traffic but it's big enough where you could find a decent spot to read. Usually in these types of shops I would slowly generate anxiety during my visit but... I didn't :] I was totally relaxed. Everything was well organized and the products were systematically placed. It is almost like Downtown Portland's very own Android's Dungeon, minus the obnoxious Comic Book Guy. FWC may be small, but in terms of comics, they have it all. Whether you're a fan of Marvel, DC, Dark Horse, Image, or even indie comics, FWC will likely have what you're a looking for. I'm always happy to stop by here whenever I am in the Old Town area and I have some time to spare. The sense of nostalgia whenever I purchase a comic or two is more than I can even bear. Love this fun and classy store. We went here during our last visit to Portland. It is clean, well lit with something from the casual shopaholic like me to the avid cartoon/manga fan. I was instantly impressed by the friendly counter guy who made us feel so welcome. Son of Rinky was impressed too and found some titles that had been eluding him. I found some interesting zines and wished I had tons of money so I could have bought tons more. Came across Floating Wold Comics while I was wandering around Portland in search for food. So glad I came across it! Lots of things to choose from - vinyls, comics, books, art work, figurines, and more! I love that there's a whole section dedicated to zines and local art (support your local artists!). They put their newest comics in an area where you can easily find them too. If I hadn't been on a time crunch, I would have probably just stayed there for hours. While visiting Portland, I noticed that this city has a lot of book stores. They have the world's largest of course but they have small ones too. And it seems like they all make it. First time I dropped by this shop was to attend an Oni Press event featuring the talents of Matt Wagner and Joelle Jones. Got to meet Jaime S. Rich and have a book signed by them. AND picked up a few books for reviewing as well. The dude behind the counter was extremely helpful, and the atmosphere was great (no sleeves so you can browse!) but is a bit on the small side. The location isn't entirely beneficial to me either. I don't work downtown or spend much time in this area of Portland, so I'd probably only show-up for specific events. And of course buy some books while I was there. How else am I gonna support these venues and the art-form? I'd probably be a regular if it were closer. But I'm sure this services the downtown area quite nicely! read more

Serious as cancer. There was a bouncer. A fat sack of shit who sat and stared at me as I walked in. I turned and saw what appeared to be the owner. He glared at me as if to say "why are you in here"? After saying hello to him he went ahead and kept staring. I wandered around the bookshelves of "graphic novels" and racks of badly organized wrinkled comics. The only plus was a section full of zines and home brewed books sitting up by the front window. This place is for people who got into reading comics in college. The kind who like to express to you that there are more to comics than superheroes. Fuck that. I like friendly service, a well organized store, mylar and to go kick some punk's ass at a bar after reading The Punisher. This place is for image conscious hobos. read more

This store made my day during a recent trip through Portland. I was looking for a particular book that wasn't for sale by anyone on amazon.com, and by chance Floating World Comics had a copy in stock. I asked the sales person to hold onto the book for me since I'd be there in a few hours (I was in Seattle at the time heading back to SF). The store was nicely organized and very well lit. I ended up spending quite a bit of time browsing their stock and planning out future purchases. The sales person was extremely helpful and looked up some release dates and other information for me. Floating World is a great comic book store. Here in Portland on vacation and noticed a real lack of graphic novels and anything comic book related in Powell's City of books. While walking back to my hotel I came across this shop and was immediately impressed just by the creative name. The attendants were very helpful. I had a few questions about what issues certain comics were on and the guy that works there was very helpful and answered every question I had patiently. The girl that works there was also very attentive and nice, she rang up my copy of "Unbeatable Squirrel Girl #1" and even placed it in a plastic protector for me. It's somewhat of a small shop but they had everything I could possibly want and with extremely reasonable prices. Love this place. Highly recommended for comic book fans. read more

I dig these guys. Their comic shop is in Old Town near the cluster of "cool" shops like Compound, Ground Kontrol, and Backspace. Floating World has a good selection of mainstream comics, but the thing to get here are the indies. Local comic companies galore. They also have a good selection of art books. They are also the new home of Grass Hut's gallery which usually has graphic art themed works. This combo makes First Thursday at Floating World a must-see. It's sad that I can't spend much money on comics or I'd get a bunch from Floating World. It's still fun to browse. read more

I am no comic book aficionado - I probably couldn't name more than three Marvel characters, and missed the acronym S.H.I.E.L.D. by a long shot at our local pub trivia. (Uh, look it up yourself.) So, I really couldn't tell you if their comic supply is astounding or impoverished. However, I do love graphic novels, and among all the books I had no clue about I recognized several classics, such as Maus and several works by the delightful R Crumb. I forgot to ask about Junko Mizuno's work (my fav!) but I suspect she was in there somewhere. They also had cool art, although it boggled my mind how expensive it was... I have collected comics for thirty years and have lived in six states and two countries while doing so. In all of my travels, I have never seen a shop with as much quality independent content as FWC. Most importantly: they present this material WITHOUT BEING PRETENTIOUS. I lived in Los Angeles for nearly a decade, and sadly most of the shops with indie content down there were, well, snobby. Snooty. (Except for House of Secrets!). FWC is run like an old-school shop: fun little corners to explore, friendly, knowledgeable clerks and a strong selection. These shops are disappearing and FWC is an oasis among them. Get in there! read more

The best thing about a comic shop is the sense of community it inspires. It feels like home when you walk in, and the chillest people are always willing to talk to you about the books, and they know their stuff, and even thought the shop is perhaps smaller or has less of an inventory than certain competitors, it has thrice the charm and then some. This is that shop, so good in fact a lot of local or travelling artists and writers of both the mainstream and indie persuasion often stop here for the same reasons, whether they are signing or not. There's a vibrant atmosphere with art on the walls and lots of stuff to look at. As an artist, I love that there's a lot of indie-arty-books. Floating World is my favorite comic shop in the country, bar none. The selection is by far the best in Portland -- graphic novels of all kinds, superhero titles, indie and foreign comics, art books, whatever you might want -- and Jason, the proprietor, is a master of helping you find exactly what you'll enjoy the most. (And in addition to comprehensively knowing his shit, he's also incredibly nice. Whatever kinds of comics you're into, you're not going to get the Look of Condescension here.) The shop also has excellent readings and other events on First Thursdays, and the gallery space is usually crammed with interesting stuff. If you're in the area to see something at Just Be/Compound Gallery on a First Thursday, make sure you catch Floating World as well. I first met Jason when the shop was just a wee little thing run out of an ActiveSpace unit up in NW, and it's been a great pleasure to see his business flourish -- and to see it enrich the local comics scene. I've had great relationships with comics shops from Boston and NYC to San Francisco, and Floating World totally wins. I moved away from Portland a few months ago, and Floating World (along with Powell's) is one of the things I pine for now that I'm gone. read more

There is a pretty decent selection of comics here, as one should hope to find in a comic book shop. I'm not a huge fan of the presentation but I've got to admit that it works well to economize space and pack more comics on the floor. As for selection, I found what I wanted and a few items I didn't even know I wanted. Then again I tend to go for popular stuff so of course they had it what I was interested in. If I were an aficionado then I might be able to give a better appraisal of the shop but to the causal buyer it was just fine. Right after the Chinatown gates. Pretty roomy, with a very good selection of comics, especially for the indy/graphic novel types, instead of just the usual superhero types. The guy who greeted us was friendly and helpful. The only negative was that it felt very very low key in terms of presentation/decoration. No effort to create a personality or style. This was the first comic book store i went to in Portland. The store is laid out really well and is very welcoming. All too often comic book stores feel like someone's garage and are cramped and uninviting. There is plenty of room to move and browse Floating World's large selection of graphic novels and new comics. While browsing I was at first disappointed with their selection of indie comics, but then i noticed the separate room at the front of the store that was dedicated to small press, alternative comics, and zines. They have a really good selection of new and back stock indie comics and graphic novels. My only complaint is that the zines are not organized very well. It's very hard to browse through them in the small space they are displayed in. Other than that, this is a great comic store! read more

If Powells did not have the comicbook reading material you were looking for, come here! I decided to come by Floating World because my brother's girlfriend heard about it from her comic book shop in Seattle and I was also looking for some back issues so I decided to tag along. I was immediately impressed with their collection. By no means it is not the exhausted and chronicled selection that you would see at Excalibur but that's not what they are going for! They had everything from the tame (Batman and friends) to the independent graphic novels. This is a good place to look for back issues from the mainstream because they do a 5-comic bundle for about $5. I was thrilled because I was definitely looking for back-issues. I give it a 5 because I believe this is the kind of comic shop that I am looking for. Good selection/variety, reasonable prices for those hunting for back issues, and a big enough collection that it would appeal to any comic reader. Awesome place where I am positive I will be spending WAAAYYY too much money and time. I LOVE the local art all over the place and I am super happy to find a place that carries all the graphic novels and quirky art stuff I live for. DIdn't have to dig through any trendy "pop" crap to find the stuff I wanted either. They seem to have a good handle on what the serious collector goes for. Meat, clean and well organized. Doesn't have that creepy "OMG I am a girl- will they all lear if I walk in" vibe. ;) WIth yummy vegan food right across the street, what more could I want? read more

Best comic shop in Portland, straight up. Great selection of indies, zines, and mainstream stuff. I've never left this place empty-handed. Environment is super chill, staff is friendly, there are pretty much no downsides. Floating World is also attached to Landfill Rescue Unit, which has some really great records, and has a little section of independent toys, mainly vinyl stuff, all of which is super cool. 100% worth going out of your way to visit. read more
