Very cool vibe. Old school hip-hop pumping from the speakers, while the DJ (owner?) spins the tunes. Unusual T-shirts. Vinyl Collectables. and and art gallery in the back with some really interesting futuristic paintings on wood. I've walked past a few times and surprised that it wasn't on Yelp. It has a really cool homey feel. You can peruse through the records or pull out a few and listen to them. Older funk and R&B like Cameo, Tower of Power and a Prince section! Blondie, Bob Marley and some old school rap in the racks as well. I guess you'd say a very eclectic place if this is what you are into. I'd go back just to see what new art is in the back gallery. Enjoy!

5 stars isn't enough…read more This is my favorite record store in the country (sorry Banana's Warehouse in Clearwater - your variety just isn't there) The owners and staff are super friendly and encyclopedic with their knowledge- I just go here and grab anything that looks cool or I've never heard of, pop it on at the listening station (crucial) and always leave with things I've never heard but am now a better music fan having purchased This store has been responsible for so much musical growth for myself and has even translated into my own art. I owe these fine folks a lot, certainly more than my monetary contributions over the years could ever even come close to - this is a Portland institution and I hope it stays open forever. Also - if you're lame or listen to super popular newer bands/acts, there's throngs of other places in Portland that will gladly take your money and sell you what you're after. If this is the case and you accidentally step into Little Axe, things totally happen but maybe don't feel compelled to leave a nasty review because of this. They're doing what they do at an extremely high level, even if it doesn't appeal to your (potentially) limited tastes.

What sets this one apart from other stores is that they have a wide variety of albums and 45s from all over the globe. The owners travel to various countries to buy some of the most exotic music, anywhere from Canada to Turkey to Mozambique. If you want to find a diverse selection of vinyl without boundaries, I highly recommend you shop here!

First visit was during their one-year anniversary wing ding, so the place was packed. Matt, the…read moreowner, greeted us at the door. Nice vibe, cool customers, DJ, and the selection seemed just fine to me. "Spendy" stuff, sure, but lots of $1 records, too. Anyone who starts a brick & mortar these days should be commended. Keep up the good work, Matt; you're obviously doing something right!

Aesthetically, I found it to be pretty disorganized and messy. Boxes just plopped around on the floor, a pretty rough looking back area, and overall not particularly clean and welcoming. The front doors look like they're barely hanging on by a thread, and the pricing was consistently on the high side, though I have seen worse. Impressive selection for the eclectic / obscure collector, and the employee working there today (it wasn't Matt) was a very friendly fella. Was able to find a few records to pick up, but overall, the place didn't have a particularly good or inviting vibe for me, so I don't foresee myself ever feeling the urge to come back, unfortunately. A HUGE turnoff for me, was how they put most of their records in sealed outer sleeves, so accessing the vinyl to check the condition was, for me, an enormous pain in the a$$. My biggest recommendation to Matt would be to NOT do that. Make the records quick and easy to get to for a closer look, brother!
