Jackpot Records sells mostly vinyl records although they do have a small selection of compact discs and even cassette tapes. Smart Selection of music that they do have on vinyl. Jackpot Records has their own label that puts out it's own artists. I do believe that Elliott Smith was on Jackpot Records when he was out in Portland. I think he recorded Either/Or with them. read more

Hawthorne's one and only record shop (that I know of) The outside welcomes you immediately with bins of records on the cheap. Some gems can be found in those bins such as "1984" by Van Halen. Inside contains great selections at fair prices. If unsure about purchases, they have a listening station to see if the record is worth your purchase. Reminds me of the stores from Northern VA and D.C. The name Jackpot fits the value for the most part. read more

As I purchased a record I asked if he took a photo of me, then he gaslit me and lied saying no (when he boldly did it right in front of me) and asked if I took a photo of him? Lol. If anything before I even stepped into the store I took a picture of the neon lights outside of the store cause I thought they looked cool. But that doesn't mean he can take a photo of me in front of my face? I also have footage of him walking up to me. I can't upload the video but my bf was recording the neon lights, I attached the photos frame by frame where he's coming from the counter with his phone and another picture (I circled his leg) of how close he stood in front of me to take a picture of me in front of my face. I feel violated, embarrassed, and terrified as a customer knowing he has a photo of me in his phone. Women be aware of creepy older guy behind the counter. This little gem was a place I was dying to see on my it places to see in Portland. Being a musician and growing up with my parents have old school records and playing them i always enjoy music stores. With the amount of change going on in my hometown area all the cute little record places are starting to disappear so I was beyond excited when I got here. When we entered it was just as I imagined records sign in pink neon lights, variety of record selection i was beyond excited! We started looking around and saw so many cool records. Being the traveler and lover of photo taking that I am I decided hey I want a pic with the sign records, as a musician or just made sense right?! The reason why I gave this place 2 stars is not because of the selection or merchandise no everything is there and the place is amazing. It's the service. A gentleman asked if we could not take pictures and I thought that was a little rude because there are thousands of people taking pictures of this place on Instagram and other social media. Music to me is meant to bring people together and hey I completely understand if your setting up camp having a full on photo shoot but this here as a musician stood for something more to me. I ended up getting a picture and would I come back here, yea but hopefully their service improves. read more

Amazing, just purely amazing. I was calling a week before Christmas, looking for a very lucrative pressing that seemed like it was sold out everywhere and I was going to end up giving my partner a shitty Christmas gift. Jackpot Records was one of the last places I called.. and lo and behold, they had it!!! And in an awesome slime green color too. They even went as far as to hold it for me, but I showed up like 20 minutes after calling and picked it up. read more

Jackpot Records is that girl in college who wore glasses, made her own clothes, and made you feel like your knees were made of teabags when she laughed. You wanted to be her friend. You knew way too much about her that you had procured completely from gossip, and then you met her, and she was actually a really, really nice person, who was funny, just as creative as you knew before, and could drink beer and fart with the rest of us humans. She was nichey and interesting. Jackpot records has two locations in portland, each are small with a healthy selection of indie rock must-haves. All cds are available to listen to at the counter. I don't frequent record stores but I've been to plenty and this one didn't blow me away. I came in to find a gift for a friend without a real plan of what I was looking for. During COVID, they have a limit of how many people can be in the shop and have you wait at the door until it's acceptable to come in. They have hand sanitizer right at the door as well as plastic gloves (loved this touch). The hip hop section isn't super big but I was able to find a couple options including old and new. Checking out was the least satisfying experience I've had in a while. One of my favorite thing about Portland is the friendly people and in most situations, the customer service is amazing. The guy worked just seemed so annoyed to be at work and to be helping anyone. On one hand I understand, we are in a pandemic and shits hard but on the other hand, this is your job and you have one so at least try to be kind? I'm probably being nit picky but hey, if customer service is your job..be cool. That's all! read more

Visited for the first time yesterday while in town on vacation. Was very impressed with its selection considering its size. We spent about an hour in here and only stopped cause we reached a financial limit. The soundtrack section has tons of hard to find horror soundtracks. The kid's section has fun stuff I didn't know existed. Hip hop boasted cool stuff both new and old school. And in the rock section I got a Record Store Day release I wasn't able to pick up on RSD - this might indicate the store is not super high volume all the time and that's a shame cause it's a great store. Person behind the counter was funny and informed. Offered insight but wasn't pushy. I left with 5 new to me albums, 3 used, 2 new. Very happy with my purchases. I spoke to two gentlemen (John and Drew) on the telephone during Record Store Day, inquiring about online availability and even though the store was probably busier than hell due to RSD, these gentlemen were very personable and helpful, and although they couldn't help me with online orders, they were able to persuade me to not give up and keep trying as additional quantities were to be added to the website during the day. After 5 hours I was finally able to acquire a copy of the record I wanted, a gift to a terminal cancer patient. These two gentlemen were instrumental in helping me obtain a copy of this record, as I would have just given up, but the customer service was absolutely exemplary. There are two types of independent retail shops that are near and dear to my heart: bookstores and record shops. We all know the deal: both have been devastated by big box (Barnes & Noble, Borders, Best Buy, etc.) and online (amazon) stores, but record stores in particular have it rough with legal and not so legal digital downloads. Whenever possible I try to shop at indie record stores, because I really fear that there will be a time in the not too distant future when I will no longer be able to enjoy that pleasure. What that means for me is that, unless the store is complete garbage or the staff openly abusive, you probably won't see me give anything less than a 3-star review for any indie record shop. The problem though is that I've backed myself into a bit of a corner with other reviews. In the PDX area I have my clear, 5-star favorite (http://www.yelp.com/biz/everyday-music-portland#hrid:r_sMwiIIznaOcAR0ET4Opw), so until I find a place that equals it, I'm basically deciding whether the place is 3- or 4-star worthy. Jackpot is cool, and has a lot going for it, but to me it's definitely a step below my second favorite record shop (http://www.yelp.com/biz/music-millennium-portland#hrid:iuJO52ayiix_V4fFuyFUkg), so I've got to give it just 3-stars. I like Jackpot's Hawthorne location because it's so freakin' convenient. There are so many cool shops, bars, and restaurants in this area that it makes it easy to just pop in and browse when you're in the neighborhood; unlike my favorite Everyday Music location or Music Millennium, you don't need to actually make Jackpot a "destination". I also appreciate that, like EM, all their CDs (new & used) are filed together, so you just go to one spot to see everything they have for a given artist. Plus, it's cool how Jackpot just files the CD jackets on the shelf inside black or red reusable cardboard sleeves, rather than displaying the entire CD jewel case. It's brilliantly economical of space and time (though Immanuel Kant might argue that point on a metaphysical level) in that you can fit more stuff on a smaller shelf, and the customer can quickly scan for color to see whether the discs are new/used. And, like any quality indie record store, you will find many discs by artists and in genres ignored by the more mainstream, big box shops. Want some rockabilly, bluegrass, acid jazz, trance...they're way more likely to have it than the music section at Tar-jay! But while the breadth of choices is wide, the depth leaves a lot to be desired, especially when compared with the 2 shops mentioned above. On a recent visit I had 3 different artists in mind, each of whom I'm looking for 1 or 2 specific albums to fill out (or complete) my ownership of their discography. They only carried 1 disc each from 2 of those artists (both of which I already have), and nothing from the third. And that's the type of thing I run into way too often at Jackpot. If I had enough disposable $$ to just spontaneously buy CDs from artists I'm not that familiar with, I'd totally dig Jackpot. But at this point in my life, especially in these "troubled economic times", I'd rather spend THAT money on seeing live shows, and save my CD purchases for stuff I already know I want. And for that, EM and MM are my best bet. But, since I'd like to finish this review on a positive note, I have to mention this - Jackpot is a GREAT place to buy concert tickets, and save a TON on the service/convenience/extortion fees. A number of venues in town that sell their tickets through one of the evil oligarchy of corporate ticket services, will pull tickets and drop them off for sale at Jackpot. Typically Jackpot will then charge just $1 above face value; they have a listing of tickets available, as well as total price including fees, on their website - but I'd recommend calling ahead because they only carry a limited number of tickets per show. I recently bought $17 dollar advance tickets to The Gutter Twins @ Doug Fir for $18/ticket at Jackpot. Had I ordered them online it was going to cost me $20/ticket PLUS an additional $4 per order. LAME! To sum up, I'll make Jackpot a destination to buy concert tickets, and happily browse when in the neighborhood, but when I'm on a mission to buy some music I'll head somewhere else first. read more

Jackpot doesn't really seem to do what their name implies. It was a nice enough location and the employees were again...nice, enough. But the selection seemed pretty lackluster and there didn't seem to be any hidden gems lurking behind the scenes. Prices on each record seemed to be pretty in line with other places that I've been (if not maybe a bit more expensive), but there just didn't seem to be anything exciting and even some questionable classifications as far as genres are concerned, thus making it harder to find what we were looking for. read more

I purchased 2 records while shopping at Jackpot, but I can't say I was overly impressed with the store or its service. Based on other records stores I've been to, the selection and prices here wasn't nearly as impressive The employees, while not unfriendly, weren't very helpful either....especially when I asked a couple of questions. What stood out to me was the lack of enthusiasm at Jackpot. When shopping at records stores like this, I usually find very enthusiastic employees who like to discuss the pros (and cons) of albums, vintage releases and the resurgence of vinyl popularity. While paying, I mentioned to the cashier that I had recently scored some mint condition albums from the 50s, 60s and 70s for a mere $1 a piece at white elephant sale. All he said was something like, "Oh. that's nice." He didn't even bother to ask any follow up questions. The young lady at the counter was a little more engaging. Again...nothing really wrong here, but nothing outstanding either. read more

We looked up this store and it looked like it had a good selection, so we headed out the Tuesday after Christmas to browse the wares. The website posted the opening hours of 11, so we took our time, had breakfast, and arrived at 11:30. The lights were on, and there was a female inside who spotted us through the front window, but when we tried to open the door it was locked. Okay, we checked the posted hours on the door and it said they were open at 11. I decided to call the store, and low and behold the female inside answered the phone. She told me they were opening at 11:30 that morning, possibly due to the inclement weather, it had snowed overnight, so understandable. She then hung up the phone and I thought, okay, she's going to open the door now because it was 11:33, 3 minutes past opening...hah! She did not! She continued about her business, completely aware of customers waiting outside the doors in the pretty frigid weather. At 11:36, I thought I must've heard her wrong, because surely she would have opened the door since it was now 6 minutes past the time she said, technically 36 minutes past the posted hours. Anyhow, let's move on...so I thought I would give her a little ring-a-ling again, and when I ask to clarify the opening time, the irritated voice on the other side informed me they were opening now...at 11:39...and let me tell you, the look and the greeting was even more frigid then the temps outside. But I digress, the story is about the store, not the icy worker/hopefully not store owner. We perused the merchandise and I was in absolute confusion...I was unable to locate the genre of music or artists I was looking for, and I dare not ask, I felt my quota for assistance had been met for the day. So we kicked up our heels and headed out the door empty handed. While the shop itself is quaint, quirky, and cute...the service and selection wasn't my...cup of tea. read more

Stopped in to check out Jackpot Records on my last visit to Portland, LOVED it. Right up front was a category I always find first when I visit a new record store, MISC/ODDITIES. Just under that was a category new to me, GOD AWFUL. I was in Heaven. I purchased several titles from both. Found old classic country records at a fraction of the price I've seen them at other stores and eBay. Some records were priced a few dollars more than other stores but everything I bought was priced under. As I was checking out I asked if they had any Little Marcy albums. I was told they had tons. This usually means the store has 2. NO. They had tons. I bought five that I didn't have, leaving behind maybe seven. The guy behind the counter was super friendly and the store has a great atmosphere. Will be back to visit them my next visit to Portland for sure. read more

Not the largest inventory, but great location and range of genres. Also their prices are better than their closest competitor. This is my go-to for selling vinyl records as EM will always try to rip you off. They pay a good price for your media and don't B.S. you with complaints about the quality of your stuff(others will say that your record is too scratched to give a decent price yet still try to buy it from you for a fraction of worth). Out of all the record stores I have been to so far in Portland, Jackpot Records is easily the one I was least impressed with. Yes, they had a decent selection of artist to choose from, and yes, the store was well maintained and easy to sort through. However, that is really where the positive points end for me. The first thing I noticed about Jackpot is that it was the only record store I visited where I wasn't greeted with a warm smile and hello. Now, is this entirely out of the ordinary for a record store? No. On the other hand, when you are in a city where everyone is ridiculously friendly, you might as well join in. Sometimes I think people forget how far a smile can really go with a customer. In addition, their prices were absolutely horrendous. They were so bad in fact, I only spent about ten minutes in the store before calling it quits. Why am I going to pay you twice as much for the same record I can get down the street for half the price? No thank you. At the end, to me, Jackpot Records feels like a record store that was built specifically to cater to those who only buy records because its the cool and hip thing to do. Unfortunately for me, I am a life long music nerd, and being so, I will always be to some degree uncool. Maybe I am missing something here, but for now, I have no real plans to return. read more

This store seems to have had it's heyday. When selling "indy rock" was easy. It was easy to get ahold of, you didn't have to try to hard to stay on the game, and you just had to hire hip kids to sell it for you. Well that time has come a gone (a bit). Portland now has stores that excel greatly at knowing their stock well and genuinely. And not just randomly ordering from the bigger names in other fields of music besides whatever Sub Pop and Matador are pushing this month. There's the usual paid-for-by-labels listening stations, CIMS banner - all the things that are an instant give away of a store that gave up just being a shop that cared about music, and tried to get into the $ game. Overpriced, and cold atmosphere. No vibe to this place at all. A bad McDonald's color scheme thru-out both shops. No excitement to be had. I like where they are headed with their label though! Seems like a more interesting endeavor at this point than the physical locations. read more

I only have one experience with Jackpot on Hawthorne, but that's quite enough for me. That experience actually happened some years before Yelp's existence, but searching record store reviews on here was enough to jog my memory of my one lousy experience at Jackpot records on Hawthorne. I went in just to browse around, not planning to buy anything. But then I saw a new copy of the Shins' "Chutes too Narrow." It was already a couple of years old by then, but I never bought it, and it was sealed, so I decided to purchase it. I take it to the counter and look down to pull out my wallet. Just as I look back, I see the clerk swapping it with a copy he had behind the counter. I promptly ask, "You're swapping them? Is there a difference?" He says, "No, no difference, this one just looks better." I say OK and pay as he bags my record, kind of in a hurry to get out of there as I was starving and wanted some tasty street tacos from Pepinos. Of course, I should've checked my record before leaving the store, that was my fault. And I should've really thought about why on earth someone would take the time to swap records behind the counter in the first place. But I wasn't expecting the clerk to swap my new, sealed copy with a used, open one that was warped enough to cause distortion on the last two tracks of side 1. I really wish I would've checked before I got home. And, if I remember correctly, the copy I was going to purchase was a colored vinyl copy, and the one I got was black. Well, you know what they say, "Fool me once..." and all that. Of course, I haven't been back there since. Seeing as how I spend about a thousand dollars a year on records, all it would've taken for them to get a significant portion of that expenditure--and another loyal customer--was an honest, straight ahead transaction. But Portland has more than a few other fine records stores around town, so I will happily continue spending my vinyl dollars elsewhere. Bottom line? Caveat Emptor to would-be Jackpot shoppers. read more

I LOVE JACKPOT RECORDS. Though there are many other good record shops in Portland I have to say that I really found the best stuff here. Actually the BF as well. Prices are reasonable and the selection is really good. All sorts of genres of music both new and old. The people that work here are super friendly and not pretentious music snobs. True, it's smaller but I like that. If yo are expecting some large store then there's Amoeba and for those who whine of hipsters then you will be miserable. I didn't spot "hipsters" in Jackpot just people who dig music. There is no dress code to enter Jackpot and if you are one who suffers from insecurity and intimidated by those who do have visible tattoos and has a style (referring to a lame review) then dear I am sorry and you may as well isolate yourself in your own world and never go outside. So to end my review I like Jackpot Records. read more

Seemingly larger selection than the downtown location, but still picking up some of the same attitude from employees (not mean, just aloof.) I have never purchased any music here for myself, because I'm admittedly not on the up and up. Prices on used items are very inflated, and the selection sparse. I get bored here pretty quickly. This seems like a great place if you are into what is new and hip. It is a sparkly, pretty, well-lit space which could be interpreted as minimalist or sterile depending on your sensibilities. I can understand why this is a Portland institution, it's just not for me. read more

I purchased a record and as I was walking out of the store, removed my mask but I had another question so I put my mask over my face with my hand and held it there and asked him if they would accept applepay as a form payment for their record player. Best thing about this store is their t-shirts. I love the design and logo. The store is only so-so. They have all their cds in these annoying plastic sleeves. I'm sure they do it to prevent theft, and to conserve space, but it looks and feels kind of crappy. They do have the latest releases and a fair selection of new and used older titles. read more

Weekend manager named drew accused my wife and me of attempted theft just because we had our selected records sitting ON TOP of our stroller IN PLAIN SIGHT. He refused to let us carry the records while we browsed and said he had to hold them behind the counter. This type of hyper-vigilance is an insult to good customers like myself and I will not be returning to this store again. I went in planning on spending between $100-$200 dollars, as record collecting is a serious hobby of mine. I'll take my money else where from now on. This place sucks. read more

Unless you want to pay extra for the privilege to look at the clerks' new $150 jeans that were made to look "vintage" while listening to them talk loudly about how much blow they did last night, I suggest going to Music Millennium, Everyday Music, Ozone O3, or the Internet. read more
