Excellent variety for new and old movies, tv shows and music besides the wonderful owner Gilbert he's very friendly and funny to if I may say so myself and he's great pals with my dad especially my dad, I well definitely recommend this place to my friends and family for the years to come. Located on Foster and Powell and from the outside looks like any older shop in that area. What you will find in here is a surprising good selection of record albums (most of what is in stock seems to be vinyl) a decent selection of CDs, a lot of DVDs and a huge amount of VHS and cassette. Now that cassettes seem to be making a bit of a comeback this would be the place to look. Unlike most of the inventory the cassettes are not in any order and guy behind counter said only on certain days do they have the full back room open for all the rest of the cassettes. Most of the albums are all mixed together in alphabetical order. County and a few other genres are separate. I give this place 5 stars because of the selection of titles I have found on several visits, the reasonable pricing (they do know what they have so rare items are priced a bit higher) but most of all the excellent friendly and knowledgeable people who work here make it a fun shopping experience. If we lived on this side of town we would be here a lot more often. It is not really in the used vinyl circuit so I suspect it is overlooked by many. I do hope I am wrong in that assumption.

This place is really great! I'm reluctant to write a review for it as I don't want all the hipsters to discover it. The outside is really nondescript, in fact I think I'm guilty of having gone past it many times without knowing it was there when I used to live in SE Portland. Once you enter the building you will be amazed at how well they have used every square inch of this retail space. You can find just about any variety of multimedia in this place. Blu Rays, DVD's, CD's, Cassette Tapes, and tons of Vinyl (which is the reason I keep coming back). From time to time they set up a bunch of boxes out on the sidewalk in front of their shop. The boxes are filled to the brim with dollar records. My husband and I ended up with a huge stack of great old school funk albums! The staff have all been super nice and helpful and have even offered to play records for me to check on their playing quality.

Well arranged selection of CDs, vinyl and DVDs. I noticed in the vinyl section they seem to have a nice collection of vintage PUNK. My interest was in the used CDs and I was certainly able to scrounge up something I don't already have. I will certainly have Variety Shop on my short list of places to check out again in the future.

For the avid dead media fanatic.... this place probably has the largest selection of VHS tapes for sale that I've ever seen. Get ready to spend A LOT of time looking through all of the available titles.

5 stars isn't enough…read more This is my favorite record store in the country (sorry Banana's Warehouse in Clearwater - your variety just isn't there) The owners and staff are super friendly and encyclopedic with their knowledge- I just go here and grab anything that looks cool or I've never heard of, pop it on at the listening station (crucial) and always leave with things I've never heard but am now a better music fan having purchased This store has been responsible for so much musical growth for myself and has even translated into my own art. I owe these fine folks a lot, certainly more than my monetary contributions over the years could ever even come close to - this is a Portland institution and I hope it stays open forever. Also - if you're lame or listen to super popular newer bands/acts, there's throngs of other places in Portland that will gladly take your money and sell you what you're after. If this is the case and you accidentally step into Little Axe, things totally happen but maybe don't feel compelled to leave a nasty review because of this. They're doing what they do at an extremely high level, even if it doesn't appeal to your (potentially) limited tastes.

If you want to find a diverse selection of vinyl without boundaries, I highly recommend you shop here!

Had always wanted to check this place out, and was finally in the area and able to give it a look…read more If I'm being honest, it was a disappointment, but I can only speak for my own experience. Aesthetically, I found it to be pretty disorganized and messy. Boxes just plopped around on the floor, a pretty rough looking back area, and overall not particularly clean and welcoming. The front doors look like they're barely hanging on by a thread, and the pricing was consistently on the high side, though I have seen worse. Impressive selection for the eclectic / obscure collector, and the employee working there today (it wasn't Matt) was a very friendly fella. Was able to find a few records to pick up, but overall, the place didn't have a particularly good or inviting vibe for me, so I don't foresee myself ever feeling the urge to come back, unfortunately. A HUGE turnoff for me, was how they put most of their records in sealed outer sleeves, so accessing the vinyl to check the condition was, for me, an enormous pain in the a$$. My biggest recommendation to Matt would be to NOT do that. Make the records quick and easy to get to for a closer look, brother!

I don't think you will find any rock bottom bargains at this place but you might find some cool treasures. Side note, i would park on street if you can. This parking lot is small and fills up fast.
