The customer service was dismissive, rude and atrocious, the shop and selection was nice. Easily the worst overall shop experience in the Portland area. Great layout, great store but jaded staff/owners ruin all of that. Prices are often higher in store and their online price. Exlied is 10-15% more expensive than better managed, kinder record stores in the area. read more

Awesome store, clean and bright, and very reasonable prices. Everything is ultrasonically cleaned and they sell very presentable and clean records. I found both of the staff that day very helpful as the lady helped me find the 45's section and the gentlemen told me about their record cleaning regiment. Pretty bummed. A friend tipped me off on a few hard-to-find LPs at this shop, at great prices. I sent the shop a Facebook message asking if they ship out of state and while they were quick to respond and quote me a price on the first LP I was interested in, when I asked to confirm its condition the reply I got was that it (and the second I inquired about) was mispriced and "should not have been on the floor." I asked twice if I could still purchase the first LP, as it was not my friend's or mily fault that it was mislabled. It's been about 2 hours and they did not reply, so I have to believe they won't honor the sticker price. Guess I won't visit this shop the next time I'm in PDX. I wasn't treated very well as someone simply trying to make a purchase. Edited to update with the correspondence received after posting this review. Buyer beware. read more

The biggest selection I've seen and a lot of rare copies of records. I came in to sell some old CDs so I browsed around while the owner looked them over. I saw rare titles and musicians I haven't seen at other large record stores, although I would say the prices were higher than I would see at those places too but for the rare and collectible records that's expected. I can't wait to come back and browse some more! read more

Service, selection, value are ALL good! If you love recorded music, I think you will not leave this store unhappy. The staff know records, and are happy to share their knowledge with you. They are not effete snobs who deign to speak to you, assuming they are the only audiophiles within miles. Neither are they illiterate fools who don't really care about what they are selling. They have been truly helpful to me. Their stock of Lps and CDs takes me back through years past when finding just the record you wanted was really a difficult task indeed. Went in today day before national record day. Tried to find a specific record, finally found it. Went to front desk to pay for it front desk person today not the friendliest or most helpful. I came in at an earlier time and the gentleman helping me was very helpful and informative, showing me record players and an album I was looking for. Exile Records is one of my favorite spots in town. I've bought hundreds of records there over the years, and along the way, I've built a great relationship with the owner - crusty in the best way, we'll call him B-man - and the amazing Kathy, the VIP co-manager extraordinaire. What I love most, though, is asking for their own recommendations. - they always steer me toward music I wouldn't normally pick up. That's awesome. They've never led me wrong. It's just a cool, welcoming place, ( once you get past B-Man's grimace) and I really enjoy being part of their little vinyl-loving community. read more

i visited Exile for the first time about 2 weeks ago, and i cannot stop thinking about how lovely the experience was! the man that was working (assume he's the owner?) was super friendly & helpful. they had a fabulous and wide-spread selection of vinyls AND cd's, all listed at a pretty fair price too! i love to support local record shops, that often have better options than a store like Target or Walmart would have. absolutely recommended this shop! i'd like to mention that as i was leaving, the worker man came out & helped me back out, as my view was blocked. that was really above and beyond! read more

There's an okay selection here, pretty small. I did find one record I wanted but I wound up driving into the city to my usual record stores anyway. The reason I won't be coming back is that the cashier used language I didn't appreciate when addressing me and I'd like these employees to think twice before using gendered terms towards strangers who are supporting your business. I hate when men who do not know me call me "dear," "hon," and especially "m'lady". Such gendered terms of "endearment" are outdated and at this point disrespectful. Huge assumptions about my gender that I don't appreciate and infantilizing for women. Let's be better than that. read more

I zoomed straight to the CDs so can't really speak to the record selection, but the stuff I looked at was eclectic, decently organized, and above all, reasonably priced. Helpful and friendly staff. Looks like a low-key remodel is in progress, but that doesn't interfere with browsing. read more

I will start out by saying I am fairly new to records and am not very well versed in terminology or information. However with this being one of the first record stores I have had the pleasure of visiting. I am beginning to see why people can spend so much time searching for that next record. When I first walked in I was quite surprised with just how many different things they had available. From new records to used records, from expensive collector level records to a few dollars. I would also like to say how clean the store was. My experience with records was bad old cardboard mildew smelling covers. Unlike my past experiences this store actually smelled and looked very tidy and well maintained. After a friend of mine passed away I received a rather large number of records (at least for a early collector). So I brought them in to be sold since most of them were not genre's I would enjoy. They were quite informative and bought several of my records. Without hesitation they recommended other stores that might be interested in buying some of my collection since what I had they were not really interested in. I hope to come back again and continue learning and hopefully add a few more records to my collection. read more

Place has a nice collection of music of all backgrounds but the workers there are a drain. Both in person and over the phone I've had a awful experiences. Employees seem too good to offer help and seem like they'd rather be anywhere but with you.
