My son and I tried Chori-Man yesterday for lunch and were pleasantly surprised to find this cute little bakery/coffee shop tucked in next door. I consider myself a bit of a "Sourdough Snob" and I had heard about Colossus a while back but didn't know that there was one (or are there 2?) in San Pedro. I went on a sourdough quest in San Francisco a few months back and I think I found the absolute best sourdough in that city. And Colossus's version, the Country Levain, is right up there! Great crust and chew and flavor is awesome. We got a medium Country Levain and a medium Levain with Cumin and Olives....that cumin and olives....wow, so freaking good and unique. A branch of Long Beach's most beautiful bakery sits right next to Choriman. The display case is so small, be sure to snatch up multiple offerings before they're gone. The Country Loaf is their basic bread, very moist, great for anything, even eating it plain. Here lies the first Pecan Sticky Bun that I can call exceptional since Joanne Chang's from Flour in Boston. Then there's a Vegan Pumpkin Chocolate Cookie and a classic chocolate chip, both amazing. Wanted an almond croissant but came in a bit late for that, about 9:15, so I ended up with a beautiful spanakopita croissant instead. The pastries here are incredible. Their kouign amann was the best one that i've ever had, the bottom was perfectly caramelized and the inside so buttery. My favorite was their seasonal squash, mornay, and pumpkin seed gremolata savory danish, it was unique and tasted so good, i wish i could get another one! Another big hit was the cinnamon sugar twist, it kind of reminded me of a way better version of a cinnamon roll haha. The ham and cheese croissant and the garlic herb and cheese scone were also incredible. I'm usually pretty let down by chocolate chip cookies but this one didn't disappoint me at all! Hands down one of the best little hole-in-the-wall coffee and bakery spots around! Everything we tried was amazing--you literally can't go wrong with anything on the menu. The cappuccino was perfect, and the barista absolutely crushed it. Pastries are generous (perfect for sharing), and the bread is baked fresh every day. Only tiny downsides are limited parking and not a ton of seating, but honestly it's in such a great walkable neighborhood with a park super close by--ideal for taking the kids afterward and letting them run around after we've had our coffee fix. If you only get one thing here ... let it be the OG cookie!!!! I try to stay away from sweets as much as I can, but the OG cookie is definitely my weakness. It's perfect every single time and I always buy more than one at a time. Service is friendly. This place is small but has a lot to offer. I haven't tried their coffee yet, but I have had their matcha and it was just ok. Perhaps their coffee is better or maybe they were having an off day. Parking has never been an issue. i'm not an overly sweet person for a breakfast pastry so I gravitate towards the croissant. I have had croissants many times hoping this time it will be better. in my experience. croissants are supposed to be light and flaky on the outside and airy on the inside. Cutest little neighborhood coffee shop!! It's so unassuming in San Pedro and off the beaten path, but a friend who lives here - gave me the heads up! I had a lovely matcha with their O.G. cookie (which was so good!! just the right amount of sweet with salt and texture!!) Their bread looked PHENOMENAL too - they use stone ground whole grains and "work whole grains into just about every product"! but I was traveling all day so I didn't get it. But, next time! Also, I wouldn't be mad if they sold a thick slice toasted with some good butter...I'd pay good money for that! The folks working were so friendly, patient! Colossus is a small bakery and cafe located in the heart of San Pedro. They offer a great selection of bakery products, coffees, teas, and even breakfast sandwiches. I ordered the chai tea latte, and I have to say it was one of the best ones I've ever had; strong hints of cinnamon, cardamom, and nutmeg while being nicely sweetened. My friend ordered the matcha latte, which is one of his favorites, and the breakfast sandwich, which is a bit expensive but a great one and done experience. I can't believe I've visited LA 3 times now and did not come to Colossus. Because WOW. These might be the best pastries I've had in LA so far, you really can't go wrong with your choices. I love love loved the berry danish, which was nicely sweet and jammy, with a fresh flakey texture that heartily carried the fruit topping. The churro roll/bun was also a knockout, and quite special. And what's even better - Choriman burritos is right next door. I wish I lived next door so I could get these two for breakfast everyday and happily say goodbye to my paychecks. Everything is fresh, quality, and the coffee isn't too bad either. Service was kind, and it's a small spot without any space to sit so know that before you go. Nice and clean bakery although I wish they offered more options. They only have a select menu and most of which they run out throughout the day. I have tried the OG cookie which is really the OG, and also the maple scone which is decent. The jalapeño sourdough loaf is spot on and a little spicey! I have yet to try their drinks but after a look at the prices, they are a little high. It is a rather small location right next to choriman. So, there is always a line or group outside of these 2 businesses and parking... well forget about it. There never is any. It's a very compact area. I was a bit skeptical, but it did not disappoint! The flavor was different from what I'm used to, but in a good way, probably the only time I've ever genuinely enjoyed an Americano. I don't even have to drive anywhere and they have authentic Matcha from Japan. They also have house made vanilla syrup and strawberry puree. It's my go to when I don't feel like driving . I decided to drop in here last week and try them out. I ordered a Matcha latte wasn't a huge fan of the Matcha, but I would like to come back and try something else. There were no signs the day I came in that they weren't accepting cash. It was a bit confusing. When I tried to pay with cash the cashier said that they did, but something about the register being locked. Luckily I had my card with me. I like this place, but the prices are getting a little prohibitive. I'll probably still go, but not as often any more. A couple of years ago, they made an announcement that they were going to raise the prices of their baked goods to give their employees a better wage. In exchange, they would no longer ask for tips. I get it. Workers should not have to count on tips to make ends meet. I thought the employers principles were in the right place, and I supported them. Well, I guess that principle is not longer valid. When I got a Danish, an OG cookie and a twice baked almond croissant, they message came up asking me if I want to tip 15% or 20% perhaps? I asked a worker about the tips situation and they said that, "Well with the other store opening, we moved to a 'service model'..." As far as I can tell, the service is the same. Am I mossing something? And the prices of the items didn't go down at all. I'm sure there's a business rationale for what they did, but from my end, it feels like a bait and switch. I applauded and supported their stand in principle initially, and am only sadden to see that they didn't stick to it. Found this spot over the weekend and it did not disappoint. It is a bit pricey but I can honestly say the quality is worth the price, so it is very fair. We got a chocolate and almond croissant and both were absolutely delightful. The filling in both was plentiful and the taste was spot on! I also tried the matcha drink houjicha and it was so tasty!
