Throughout the 20th century, diners flourished in New Jersey. Not only were they places to get an affordable meal, but they were also roadside attractions in their own right, thanks to their signature neon-lit metallic aesthetic that developed during the post-war years. Located in Lyndhurst just off of Route 3 on Orient Way, this establishment has been around since 1985. Gus's Colonial Diner is a 1950s train car-style diner with its sparkling, silver and crimson roof that has been renovated to maintain its retro vibe feel. My partner and I came tonight for dinner from our last visit 2 years ago. Upon entering the bright interior, highlighted by a long, spacious counter and round swivel stools, along with stainless steel wall panels and decorative tile, we were greeted by the host, Jim, who owns and operates the place along with his mother, Georgia, and got a table immediately in the corner with views of both dining areas. Their menu is extensive, much as one would expect from a solid Jersey diner featuring salads, sandwiches, triple-decker club sandwiches, specialty burgers, roasts, steaks, and seafood. For starters, I decided on a small cup of Chicken Noodle Soup. As our main meal, we opted for the Eggs Benedict with Avocado and Turkey Bacon as well as the Chicken Gyro Sandwich accompanied with Fries. Our meals were all prepared to absolute perfection, well seasoned, served hot, and delicious. The portions were huge and the price very reasonable. The staff were welcoming, attentive, and the service was fast. Diners are definitely a "Jersey Thing" which we continue to recommend.

I go to Colonial when I'm in the mood for a delicious eggs Benedict (they make the best, btw). Staff is friendly and full of regulars, which is always a good sign. Can't go wrong here with standard diner fare. Just go. You'll be glad you did. ENJOY!!!

One of my favorite diners. Owned/managed by two brothers. Food servers always great. Really enjoy having breakfast here. Love the eggs and french toast! Good parking and convenient location. Good value. Retro atmosphere.

Stopped by this old school looking diner while visiting New Jersey and it did not disappoint! Really great quality food and everything is very fairly priced. The service was very good as well, really pleased with our visit.

This is a classic old school diner, it feels like going back in time. I loved the red themed retro decor. The space is narrow but there's a good amount of seating. We came in before a funeral that was at the cemetery across from the diner. The service was friendly and pretty fast. I ordered a grilled cheese sandwich with bacon and French fries. The grilled cheese sandwich came with a lot of bacon and was very tasty. The fries were ok. The prices are reasonable and portions are generous.

This diner gets packed! The food is good and is ready pretty quickly. I ordered a waffle deluxe which included eggs, sausage, and bacon. The portion sizes are big so definitely arrive hungry.

Great service/ clean... had the steak n eggs ... good breakfast spot ., wish my steak was thicker but this isn't a steak house.. added a coffee n a soda for $29

Run of the mill diner, nothing really bad about it but nothing special. The friend I went with got corned beef hash and it was the corned beef hash that comes in a can which I am not a fan of so I'm glad I didn't order it. Eggs Benedict was mediocre, mound of Homefries under it made the eggs Benedict slide all over the place when I tried to cut it. Great classic diner atmosphere and service was great and very accommodating to my friends substitutions or additions but just wouldn't really recommend the place based off of what I had and the amount of other diners in the local area to try.

Old school diner with great food! Had the corned beef hash with over easy eggs. I asked they cook my home fries done super crispy, and the waiter offered to deep fry them. Yes!!! That's the extra you want. The multigrain bread for my toast was delicious. The eggs and hash were wonderful - but honestly it was the home fries and toast that put it over the top. Service was great. Nice touch was that the place is full of locals and nice people who chat between tables. Just a nice way to spend a lazy Sunday morning.

Small town charm in a bustling establishment. That's how I would sum this up. We usually drive by and it's always very packed but this time there was a spot right out front. There is a limited parking lot and even more limited street parking on the side street. It's small inside but comfortable if that makes sense. Tables are set up in a matter that you are very comfortable. It was busy so slightly chaotic. To the point that our waitress seemed a little overwhelmed and didn't have time to even check on us. I got the Tex-Mex omelet which had jalapeños, onions, cheddar and topped with salsa. I also got a side of corned beef hash. The omelet was very good. You got your money's worth on this meal. My only complaint was a little too much of the salsa, especially being that you can tell it came straight from a plastic container. Don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with that for your basic Diner fare, but there was just a little too much. Same went for the corned beef hash. Definitely out of a big can, which is all good. On the Diner scale, this was a 4 star all day. Clean, good food and priced right.

Super customer service! From the hostess to our server we had top notch service. Fill up of our personal water bottles, or just drinks for the road, they made the offer. Food was good. I am a bit of a Taylor Ham, Egg and Cheese sandwich snob and theirs was solid. The greatest? No. But darn good. I was not disappointed. My daughter raved about the Oreo Milk Shake. A solid Jersey Diner Experience with superior customer service.

Banana & Chocolate Chip Pancakes

Arrived on a late Sunday afternoon and was craving some breakfast. We were greeted as soon as we sat down and were promptly served. I was drawn to the banana chocolate chip pancakes, and my goodness, it wasn't a mistake. Look at how glorious these pancakes look. They were fresh and piping hot, but so so good. These were some hefty pancakes!! My partner built his own omelette, and that was also just as good. I love diners for their breakfast foods. The service was on point, and the food came out within 5 minutes of ordering. Can't wait to come back!!

They have great happy hour specials and staff who are there to honor the deals and give you a fun experience. Nothing worse than walking into a bar because of an advertised deal and the bartender charging you full price because they didn't know anything about the deal. That doesn't happen here which is huge!!! They have multiple TVs and seating areas, which make it perfect for watching sports. Drinks are great and food is delicious. We love the chicken quesadilla and wings. The espresso martini was surprisingly good. We love their drink pitchers as well. Overall you can tell they care about the community, and want to offer a reliable and fun experience in an area that doesn't have too many bars like this. We have returned multiple times since the first time because we love the consistency, fun events, and friendly staff. The only thing they could improve on is the music. When there's a DJ, it's a great night, but when it's up to Touch Tunes there's room for improvement. We still will return whenever we are looking for a good time!

We tried the Ham & Brie Croissant with Tavern Fries. The Croissant was big enough for two of us to share and SOO good. I had the Golden Peach Martini while my girlfriend ordered the Brown Butter Old Fashioned. I'm not typically one to order an Old Fashioned so I always try hers out -- this has to be a top 5 for me!! This was my second time coming to Union. I had initially come in the fall for a Yelp Elite event but I've been wanting to come back ever since. For a "bar," their food and drink list is elevated and better than most! Shout out to our server Mariah! She said the bar had poured too much prosecco for another table, so we got to enjoy some complimentary prosecco -- can't let that go to waste! ;) Parking in East Rutherford can be tough at times, but I do love that Union has their own lot with plenty of parking. Ownership really did a great job creating a very cool, city-style, modern atmosphere. Before writing this review, I had to really think about what UB&P really is and (duh!) the name says it all. This is more of a bar first and food ( provisions) secondary. As long as you visit with this in mind you should have a good experience. Well lit, well stocked bar with as pair of large TVS for watching a game. Not a craft beer bar but ok on the wine selection and it has an interesting craft cocktail list. However the drinks sounded better than they were made. My dining companion and I have had our fair share of Old Fashions and Lychee-style martinis. The versions here GOLDEN PEACH MARTINI & BROWN BUTTER WASHED OLD FASHIONED fell flat. At $16-18 per, they need to get better. As for food, a very small menu ( which I do like at times) but this one doesn't have anything that says "I have to try that!" Again I'm feeling that what with all the great restaurants in the next town it makes sense to push the alcohol here more than the food. We split he hummus platter which was very good; For our main course: the house burger ( with fries) and meatloaf ( with sauteed spinach and pureed potatoes). The burger was very good and cooked as ordered. The meatloaf was good\ok, but I have the opinion that most of us already have a version of our favorite meatloaf from somewhere else ( mom's, spouse's, our own). A side of cornbread was ordered too. I find most places make it too dry but this version was very good. Do NOT expect to have dessert here as it is almost non-existent. No menu and only a few generic choices like cheesecake, chocolate cake, creme brulee ( they had 1 left on a Wednesday night! really? ) Anyway, good place for catching the game with some drinks. Food here if needed to keep the night going. They just need to do a little work on those cocktails.

Upon arrival at Sonoma Bistro, we were greeted by the staff and got a table by the back wall decorated for the holidays, evoking a festive, warm, casual, and inviting vibe with music playing throughout. If you get her as your server, it's a start to a pleasant and great meal. Angelina knows what she's talking about! One feedback would be to learn how to better time the serving of the foods. We got our soup and shrimp cocktail as starters but literally 3 minutes later, our entrees were served to the table. Our entrees got cold while we tried to finish our starters. Please look to have the servers better time the serving of entrees AFTER the starters are finished. I had the New England Clam Chowder and the Prime rib. The clam chowder was tasty but lacked clams. They added andouille sausage to the chowder to give it a nice tasty twist but this should not have taken away from the amount of clams expected in a clam chowder. Prime rib was a good thick cut. But served warm and almost at room temperature. Not exactly how I would like my prime rib. Shoe string fries were tasty. My boyfriend ordered the Clam Chowder and Shrimp Cocktail as starters, followed by Cajun Sea Pasta and a bunch of side dishes - southern Coke slaw, black beans and rice and the loaded baked potato. Shrimps in the shrimp cocktail was good sized shrimp topped with old bay seasoning. The pasta was seasoned just right, very tasty and delicious. Cole slaw was crunchy which meant the Cole slaw was freshly made and not sitting in the sauce for too long. Loaded baked potato was of good size and baked to the right softness. Black beans and rice was the only side dish that was a bit too salty but went great when mixed with the baked potato. Overall, we were impressed with Angelina's services, friendliness of the staff and quality of the foods.

The home made…read moresalad dressings are phenomenal. the "Nonnas lasagna" was extremely burnt, so hard we could not cut it, it also lacked authentic flavor. The chicken tacos with rice and beans on the side were phenomenal! The Cesar salad was good but we did get served some browned romaine which i noticed half way through and couldn't finish eating it. I had the salmon and it has a fishy taste, it was also very small looked like 4-5oz. Although I asked for it well done, I did not expect it to be BURNT it was literally black like charred on the whole bottom and top. The wild rice/orzo chilled salad really lacked flavor and was quite the conundrum, I think this side should be improved or changed out completely. The roasted chicken with mashed potato's was excellent. Our server was very absent minded, although she circled and passed by she NEVER once stopped and checked in after serving the food to ask "how is everything?" so we didn't even get a chance to tell her about the burnt lasagna but fortunately the food runner and a different server did pass by us and checked on us ecause they saw us with our necks out looking for our server who had actually passed by us but didn't even look at us...I found it strange that for such a fine establishment the server had not been drained to check on the table 2-5 minutes after each course is served. We had a 3 course meal. A salad to start, followed by the chicken tacos and Nonna lasagna as a second appetizer, then our main dishes. Not once did she check on us after the food was served. I will return in a few months to see if there has been any improvement. The manager did take the lasagna off the bill after the busser brought the plate back. However the waitress never came or made any comments about it. She truly lacked hospitality, personality, and attention To details. I don't remember her name i don't think she Even provided it... the dessert menu also could be better being that there are other restaurants in the area with better dessert options. I think this place needs something good that makes it unique... maybe a story to tell by the server for first times guest or any suggestions etc.
