Throughout the 20th century, diners flourished in New Jersey. Not only were they places to get an affordable meal, but they were also roadside attractions in their own right, thanks to their signature neon-lit metallic aesthetic that developed during the post-war years. Located in Lyndhurst just off of Route 3 on Orient Way, this establishment has been around since 1985. Gus's Colonial Diner is a 1950s train car-style diner with its sparkling, silver and crimson roof that has been renovated to maintain its retro vibe feel. My partner and I came tonight for dinner from our last visit 2 years ago. Upon entering the bright interior, highlighted by a long, spacious counter and round swivel stools, along with stainless steel wall panels and decorative tile, we were greeted by the host, Jim, who owns and operates the place along with his mother, Georgia, and got a table immediately in the corner with views of both dining areas. Their menu is extensive, much as one would expect from a solid Jersey diner featuring salads, sandwiches, triple-decker club sandwiches, specialty burgers, roasts, steaks, and seafood. For starters, I decided on a small cup of Chicken Noodle Soup. As our main meal, we opted for the Eggs Benedict with Avocado and Turkey Bacon as well as the Chicken Gyro Sandwich accompanied with Fries. Our meals were all prepared to absolute perfection, well seasoned, served hot, and delicious. The portions were huge and the price very reasonable. The staff were welcoming, attentive, and the service was fast. Diners are definitely a "Jersey Thing" which we continue to recommend.

I go to Colonial when I'm in the mood for a delicious eggs Benedict (they make the best, btw). Staff is friendly and full of regulars, which is always a good sign. Can't go wrong here with standard diner fare. Just go. You'll be glad you did. ENJOY!!!

One of my favorite diners. Owned/managed by two brothers. Food servers always great. Really enjoy having breakfast here. Love the eggs and french toast! Good parking and convenient location. Good value. Retro atmosphere.

Stopped by this old school looking diner while visiting New Jersey and it did not disappoint! Really great quality food and everything is very fairly priced. The service was very good as well, really pleased with our visit.

This is a classic old school diner, it feels like going back in time. I loved the red themed retro decor. The space is narrow but there's a good amount of seating. We came in before a funeral that was at the cemetery across from the diner. The service was friendly and pretty fast. I ordered a grilled cheese sandwich with bacon and French fries. The grilled cheese sandwich came with a lot of bacon and was very tasty. The fries were ok. The prices are reasonable and portions are generous.

This diner gets packed! The food is good and is ready pretty quickly. I ordered a waffle deluxe which included eggs, sausage, and bacon. The portion sizes are big so definitely arrive hungry.

Run of the mill diner, nothing really bad about it but nothing special. The friend I went with got corned beef hash and it was the corned beef hash that comes in a can which I am not a fan of so I'm glad I didn't order it. Eggs Benedict was mediocre, mound of Homefries under it made the eggs Benedict slide all over the place when I tried to cut it. Great classic diner atmosphere and service was great and very accommodating to my friends substitutions or additions but just wouldn't really recommend the place based off of what I had and the amount of other diners in the local area to try.

Old school diner with great food! Had the corned beef hash with over easy eggs. I asked they cook my home fries done super crispy, and the waiter offered to deep fry them. Yes!!! That's the extra you want. The multigrain bread for my toast was delicious. The eggs and hash were wonderful - but honestly it was the home fries and toast that put it over the top. Service was great. Nice touch was that the place is full of locals and nice people who chat between tables. Just a nice way to spend a lazy Sunday morning.

Small town charm in a bustling establishment. That's how I would sum this up. We usually drive by and it's always very packed but this time there was a spot right out front. There is a limited parking lot and even more limited street parking on the side street. It's small inside but comfortable if that makes sense. Tables are set up in a matter that you are very comfortable. It was busy so slightly chaotic. To the point that our waitress seemed a little overwhelmed and didn't have time to even check on us. I got the Tex-Mex omelet which had jalapeños, onions, cheddar and topped with salsa. I also got a side of corned beef hash. The omelet was very good. You got your money's worth on this meal. My only complaint was a little too much of the salsa, especially being that you can tell it came straight from a plastic container. Don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with that for your basic Diner fare, but there was just a little too much. Same went for the corned beef hash. Definitely out of a big can, which is all good. On the Diner scale, this was a 4 star all day. Clean, good food and priced right.

Super customer service! From the hostess to our server we had top notch service. Fill up of our personal water bottles, or just drinks for the road, they made the offer. Food was good. I am a bit of a Taylor Ham, Egg and Cheese sandwich snob and theirs was solid. The greatest? No. But darn good. I was not disappointed. My daughter raved about the Oreo Milk Shake. A solid Jersey Diner Experience with superior customer service.

Arrived on a late Sunday afternoon and was craving some breakfast. We were greeted as soon as we sat down and were promptly served. I was drawn to the banana chocolate chip pancakes, and my goodness, it wasn't a mistake. Look at how glorious these pancakes look. They were fresh and piping hot, but so so good. These were some hefty pancakes!! My partner built his own omelette, and that was also just as good. I love diners for their breakfast foods. The service was on point, and the food came out within 5 minutes of ordering. Can't wait to come back!!

For my meal I got the chicken sandwich, and it was really good, super fresh and a great portion size. He was really friendly, attentive, and made sure everything came out right. Overall the service and food were both great, and I would definitely come back.

Unfortunately, this experience didn't fully reflect the quality I've come to expect. A few of our dishes really missed the mark. The lobster mac & cheese special was especially disappointing, I couldn't find a single chunk of lobster. It was made with cheddar cheese and even had tomato in it, which made the overall combination taste off and fairly bland. We actually took the gnocchi home so I could take a closer look, and there truly was no visible lobster, if anything, it may have been just a crumble that you couldn't even appreciate, which defeats the purpose of a lobster mac & cheese. The steak sandwich ordered medium came out overcooked and with a lot of fat making it hard to enjoy removing fat as you eat it and the Cuban sandwich was quite dry. On a positive note, my quinoa chicken bowl was good, and my boyfriend breakfast sandwich as always was great. Our waiter was super nice, and the ambience is always comfortable and inviting. I'm sharing this feedback with the intention of helping, as this has always been a go-to spot for me, and I look forward to continuing to have the great experiences I know you're capable of delivering. One more thing, please bring back the original kale salad. Your new menu lists a new version that changes the whole thing. Including a picture of the original to refresh your memory from 2 years ago. Thank you!

The interior is dated, but that is their charm as they have both booths and tables and can accommodate at least 150 guests at any given time. The Stack is all about Pancakes and steak, but today I had the burger with fries, Cole slaw and a pickle along with an Iced Tea. The service is friendly, fast and professional. They do a great job of hiring great employees and they have an incredibly loyal following with plenty of competition such as The Colonial, Tick Tock and Arlington Diner. i like their extensive menu and will stop by more often when in New Jersey. Breakfast food should be easy to make and a delight to eat, and I appreciate the consistency across both of our visits. A true pancake house, they let you substitute home fries for pancakes and let me tell you, that is the right choice! Fluffy, buttery goodness. Eggs, bacon, sausage, home fries... nothing fancy, but all very easy to mess up. We enjoyed every bite. We're also looking forward to coming back for dinner, it is, after all, also a steakhouse! Ample parking, festive for the season, cozy vibes, friendly staff, and good food. What more do you need? I also love their motto printed on the menus and staff shirts: "You deserve butter."
