3.5 Stars. This place recently gave me shelter from the bitter cold, as I waited an hour and a half for my very late friends to go to Medieval Times (to be fair though, I was 45 minutes early), and for that I am very grateful. Service was very good, the place had a nice "welcome to the neighbourhood, you must be new here" feel for me, because there were several patrons around who were clearly regulars (always a good sign, right?). They served strong coffee, and excellent cheesecake, which the host was kind enough to recommend. And as it became clear that my wait wold be longer than anticipated, I took the unusual turn of ordering an app after my dessert, and got the chili-cheese fries as well, which would have been a pretty average dish, but was elevated by the surprisingly flavourful and crispy fries. Good food, enormous portions, reasonable prices, indoor warmth- me happy. read more

Server named Natalie (I hope I got the name right, if not, is the server working around 5:00am on Friday is extremely rude. I've been there many times with co-workers and I won't come back. I'll make sure my co-workers won't come back as well. Food is great and the other servers (working other shifts) are great as well. Great little diner with standard diner food. If I could give it three and a half stars I would. Slightly better than most diners and even has that old time diner look to it. The thing I like about diners in New Jersey is that you can always get Taylor ham. It's a Jersey thing. The Taylor ham here was pretty decent and I got a tailor-made wrap. I got three eggs scrambled, extra Taylor ham, with fried onions and peppers. Usually when I put in that type of order that is not on the menu, they tend to screw up either the extra eggs or the extra ham. This place got it right. My husband loved his French toast+bacon! My eggs Benedict was okay. It was a little dry for my taste (needed more sauce) but eggs were cooked perfectly. Crispy home fries; good coffee and free refills! Parking is easy and our waitress was pleasant and attentive! Would definitely go back. read more

So amazing. Had the Turkey Ruben. It was huge, I understand why fries don't come with it, you don't need them. The Kentucky derby burger-turkey burger was fabulous. I had to steal a bite of my girlfriends. We got some desert to go, red velvet cheesecake. Had to. Santa came in to the diner while we were here too with the local firefighters.. Our waitress was such a sweetheart too. We will be returning here EVERY TIME we are in town for football games. (My cousin owns a diner... He needs to come here and take some notes!) Went here 07/07/18 Waitress was SYLVIA! Ordered food was ok .Wanted to order dessert but she never came around. She was on phone and watching TV for 15 minutes. There is a waitress here, Danielle. Now I know it may seem silly but I can be in the worst mood of my life and when I walk into this restaurant and see that she's my waitress, without moving a muscle I become 10 times happier. Like not even about the food,(which is amazing I completely recommend the salads or the burgers if you're a picky person) but her attitude makes my visit 110x better. She is on top of everything. She will know when I'm at the bottom of my drink or when I'm ready to pay. She's very consistent and I completely love this restaurant way more just because she's here. Came in diner for bkfast at 7:30 had 8:20 train out of Newark. Waitress was Pam and told me don't worry you will be out in time . She had like 12 tables alone so I was skeptical. Staying nearby for business, tried the Colonial for breakfast this morning. Classic diner decor, and skilled professional service. You can't generally go wrong with breakfast, and Colonial was excellent. Walked in and the heat hit you like a heat wave because they either had no AC or just didn't have it on high enough. When we walked in, the hostess wasn't at the entrance so the bus boy told us to just take a seat at the open booth, so we did. 5 minutes later we were greeted by Jennifer, the extremely unfriendly waitress who asked us for drinks then said: "Do you want menus?" Seriously....? Obviously if we're sitting down, we WANT menus. Her service was terrible on every level. We ask for the check she brings it and we notice it's the wrong check so we ask for another and she snatched it from my boyfriends hands trying to cover up the fact that she made a mistake....... what is the big deal lady? As far as diner food goes, this place is good. I love Jersey diners, they have that something that other diners don't. We ordered the disco fries, a burger and a buffalo chicken wrap. The fries were great, the burger was good--just a little bit dry though. And the buffalo chicken wrap could have done with probably half the amount of sauce. But all in all, enjoyable, and was made even better by the friendly service. read more

This is an excellent example of a classic New Jersey diner. Good food, big portions, prompt, friendly service. It's conveniently located right off of Route 3 and there's plenty of parking. (Don't laugh, parking is a pain in the ass in Northern NJ). Check the specials. They're usually excellent. On Fridays, try the Macaroni and Cheese with the Fish Cakes. The Fish Cakes are nothing special but the mac and cheese might be the best I ever had -- and I lived in the South for over 20 years. I know my mac and cheese. I was visiting the area for a football game at Met life Stadium. Being that there weren't many options for food near my hotel, I decided to try this diner. Well let me tell you, I was very happy I did! I got the chicken souvlaki platter that came with THE BEST tsaziki I have ever had! It was so good that I had to tell not only the waitress (who was beyond sweet) but also the owner how good it was. The service was quick, friendly, food was delicious, and prices were great. What more could you want? My only complaint is that I live too far away to get this tsaziki on the regular....because if I lived here I definitely would! I would recommend this diner hands down. So far i have been here about 15 times and the crazy thing about this place is either the dishes are pretty damn good or terrible. Not many diners in Lyndhurst so this place is in a good position take on a good reputation. I had their Chili and it was great. Their Chicken Souvlaki Platter is also damn good. As is their breakfast dishes...eggs and home fries are good stuff. I had a few club sandwiches that were also real good. Asian Chicken salad is also great. Their burgers can be much better. Any place in NJ open all night or late should be smacking out top notch burgers especially with all the good burger joints that have been popping up last few years (5 guys, smashburger, ect ect). Give me something better than some frozen patti of crap ground beef. Their "philly" Cheesesteaks are terrible. I knew i was taking a chance when the menu mentioned something about "Roast Beef" ..at that point is it even a Philly Cheesesteak?...but damn was it bad...overcooked dry chopped roast beef on a previously frozen roll that was absolutely terrible. This was a decent diner. Definitely a classic and it was clean. We had a good meal but not exceptional in anyway. Manhattan clam chowder was full of onion celery potato and had a decent amount of clam pieces. But it tasted overall of celery and onion. The garden salad 6.99 was simple and maybe a little small for the price but the ingredients were fresh and crisp and it wasn't super cold like so many diners. I had the grilled chicken Italian sandwich . Lots of grilled chicken breast with, mozzie, and roasted peppers . The ingredients were all excellent but it need something to tie it together. My wife's grilled cheese with bacon and tomato was satisfactory . Fries were ok, nothing to complain about, nothing to get excited about. Went in for the first time on a Sunday at noon. I am trying to stay open minded about trying it again, but I don't think I plan on returning. Diners are always busy on weekends, but service was slow. We had like 3 different people serving us and the host clearly wasn't paying attention as to which group came in first because she tried seating people out of line all the time. Plus, the food took about 40 minutes to come out, and we didn't even order anything difficult! Not to mention I ordered my eggs over medium and they were SO over easy that they were barely cooked at all. Overall the food was okay. But really...charging PER cup of coffee? That's ridiculous. Not sure why this place is rated so high, I'm being generous by giving it 3 stars. There are way better diners around. Small and classic diner. Unsuspectingly awesome. I say unsuspectingly awesome because the diner appears to be your average normal diner. But the food, it's amazing. SPECIFICALLY, the chicken Cesar WRAP. It's packed with juicy chicken, crisp lettuce, and mouth watering Cesar dressing, all ingredients-at the perfect ratio. Colonial Diner, how I longed to love you. The decor is cute, and it is conveniently located. Coffee comes consistently, and the servers were adequate. That being said, the food was sad. I had the Eggs Benedict, and was not thrilled to eat eggshell twice. The hollandaise sauce was grainy and flavorless to boot. Moreover, I was a little confused as to why my husband's french toast was orange. (Not fussy, he ate it, but see for yourself.) I was relieved to see, however, that we got our food BEFORE the cook ran his hands through his greasy hair and went back to cooking... call me a germophobe. I just prefer butter or oil instead of head sweat. Maybe there is a special dish that makes this place shine. Yet, not too sure I will risk having another lack - luster meal when there are so many other places to try. read more

The staff was very friendly and helpful, we came in with a larger party after a graduation ceremony without notification and they made room to accommodate us in a very short time. The service was great and the food was excellent. Prices are reasonable. Being from out of town it is unfortunate that we won't be able to make this a regular spot but I sure would recommend this restaurant to any one. I had the Veggie panini and it was mouthwatering. Let me start by saying the food from this diner is great! And the waitresses are all friendly, my one and only issue is with the older lady/manager maybe? Most of the time I'm doing a pickup and while I agree that a tip is well deserved for packing the bags, one should not be guilted onto you. This lady does just that. Case in point, went tonight to pick up an order and when I was given the total it seemed a little high. I left a tip on the tip line and asked for an itemized receipt. I saw they added gratuity automatically to the order, I've never seen that done for a take out order from anywhere. Insane if you ask me. I explained to this lady that I had already left a tip on the tip line and would like a refund, so at first she tried giving me the tip I left back but I wanted what was added to the receipt back. All I got was huffs and puffs and things like "well I'm not sure how to do that" and "we add that automatically because some people don't leave anything". I'm sorry don't we live in America where we are free to leave a tip or not? How do you force that on someone. Sorry but she is terrible to deal with and should not be there! I went here for a Saturday night dinner. It was my first visit. I love diners, but I won't be returning. Our hummus plate was good but it only had 3 pita wedges, which meant we had way more hummus than pita - for $7. The told me mid-way through our appetizer that they ran out of my chosen meal. I picked the moussaka off the top of my head and asked if it'd take too long to make. They said no. What we got was one meh burger that had been sitting too long, and some moussaka that was cold in the middle. I think they rushed heating it because I asked if it'd take too long. Look, I just wanted to know if it'd be 40 minutes because you had to make a tray from scratch... I didn't feel like asking them to reheat it, so I ate around the cold parts. The sauce on it was a little burnt-tasting, and it just wasn't working for me. It was serviceable but not the wonderful Greek comfort food experience I had been hoping for. The bechamel was unremarkable. The burger had a dense structure that suggested a pre-made patty or one that had been sitting for awhile in salt - no fresh, lumpy texture. Dessert was alright - never heard of ferrer roche cake before. It was a bit rich but that's cake for you. I wanted to like this place, but there were too many strikes against it. It took 45 minutes to get egg dishes. Our food had not arrived yet and we were ready to just pay for our coffee and juice and leave. Then the "manager" comes over and advised us she would comp our meal if we would just stay. The food finally arrived and she says she can't comp hash. This other manager comes over and says he will comp our coffee. Then explains their "fresh food"is made to order. There is no diner in NJ where corn beef hash 2 eggs and an English muffin should take 45 minutes. Especially when other people who ordered after us are getting the same food we ordered first. He is rude and argumentative. To his credit he did comp finally comp our meal. But because he was condescending, argumentative, and rude and I am never going back! read more
