We recently purchased Orbea Rise e-assist bikes for my wife and myself at College Cyclery in Reno, Nevada. My wife loves hers but I had problems with mine almost from the beginning. The assist was sporadic and I had clicking sounds that seemed to come from the motor area. Randy had the bike in his shop several times and each time the problems went away for awhile but returned. The bike was in the shop 4 times and I was never charged. Most recently I went in and was ready to pay to replace the motor (approximately $1,000) but Randy said he'd look it over again. He found that the wiring to the motor was frayed and was contributing to the clicking noise that kept coming back. He charged me $50 for the part but wouldn't accept anything for his labor. The bike is perfect now and I was able to ride it on a challenging trail where dirt bikes usually go. Talk about great customer service!!! read more

I recently purchased an Orbea Gain E-Road bike from College Cyclery. The service was excellent. The bike was a special order, so I got the bike I wanted and was worth the price! It took about 2 hours to do the custom fit to me. The process was very thorough and Randy was very knowledgeable and made me feel comfortable with the fit and purchase. My friend and I went to College to get his brakes serviced and they told us they could do it. We were gone for an hour or more and received their call only to tell us they couldn't work on his brakes because they weren't compatible with his bike. We went back to pick up his bike and they charged him $60 for really doing nothing. We wasted time and money. We ended up going to Scheels and they worked on the exact bike and brakes and got everything working (plus Scheels doesn't charge inspection fee). I hate to not support a local business and I get that they have to make money, but honestly they just want to sell there. They don't really care about the enjoyment of average bikers. If you are an average biker who just bikes for fun go elsewhere. They just want to sell there. read more

I've been going to this store on and off for the past twelve years, only because they are the only permanent bike repair shop in downtown, close to where I live. If there were other stores nearby I would definitely go elsewhere- the people at Cyclery do just an ok job, with an attitude, as if they know everything and the customer is just a dumbass. And they over charge each time. Ask them to do a little fixing for you that takes them a couple of minutes and bang, they charge you 10 dollars extra for 'labor'. I only go see these people when I have absolutely no other choice. It pains to me to say this because I am all for supporting local businesses, but these people don't appreciate you back anyway. We recently went into to this bike shop looking for sidi shoes, it was recommended by another shop due to its Sidi bike shoe affiliations. An older blonde lady helped us. She said we do not allow people to try on shoes you'll just try them on and find them online. We both said no we needed a pair of mountain bike sidis, and I had had many pair but I'd like to see and try on what they had. She proceeded to measure ,my foot she told me I had a metatarsal in my foot, (everyone has five on each foot) but nevertheless she said none of her shoes would fit me. " can I at least try on this pair that I measured for" no she said. They won't fit you cuz you have a metatarsal. Once again everyone has 5 on each foot. Anyway not only did she not want to serve us she tried to insult me with a word she had newly acquired. Just want people to know if this rough looking blonde lady tries to help you put at this store run away she's angry at the world. This is also the first bike store in the Reno area that was rude and inappropriate ALL the others have been so nice and knowledgeable we thought we were in bike heaven . Time for the Spring tune up on the bicycle and there's only one place I'll take it- College Cyclery. They have a great selection of road bikes, mountain bikes, hybrid bikes and e bikes. All of the staff are knowledgeable about the products and eager to help In addition, they have great accessories which include clothing, helmets and other safety gear and a variety of bicycle pumps. I've bought and taken my bike back to them for many years. It's comforting to have them tune up the bike and knowing that I'm riding a bike that is safe and up to standards. read more

Do not go here. The woman (owner?) is one of the rudest and most socially unaware people I've ever met. I went in while VISITING Reno with the goal of getting a chain cut for a key chain. I am a bike mechanic myself, but was visiting from out of town and didn't have a chain breaker. I intended to get a chain cut and purchase a quick link just to make a keychain. Arts and crafts. Instead of cutting the chain, charging me for labor and selling me a quick link, the older woman working fixated on how I didn't have my own chain breaker and repeatedly told me I am not a bike mechanic, because if I was, I'd have a chain breaker with me. Again, I was visiting town, with no bike, or tools. She repeatedly talked over me when I tried to explain I am visiting town. I just need it cut and I'll buy a quick link and be on my way. Do not support this business. These people don't deserve to exist in this industry. Customer service to paying customers is nonexistent and social awareness does not exist here. read more

I just brought my granddaughter's bike to the back door of College Cyclery where the repair shop and all the parking for customers is located. It was 9;50am. There is no signage at this door, that has storefront windows on its side, as to open hours or anything else. Only signs were Covid warnings and mask requirement. I saw two people opening up and they saw me standing there with the small bike. Neither person acknowledged me or told they they weren't open or opened at 10;00. They just ignored me. How hard would it have been to say they weren't open, or to open the door and help me with the bike. There are plenty of other bike shops that would want business from a repeat customer. Not sure if the shop needed money or something at the time but this is a grudge that I'm going to hold against any bike ship regardless. I was passing by one day in Reno Nevada, saw a nice bike I saw on display. It was a Bianchi Pista Sei Giorni size 55. I was 5'6. See the problem there? The person who helped us did not hesitate to sell us the bicycle at all despite the HUGE different in size. Was an older white man with a gut. Probably figured I was a sucker for spending $1000 plus tax on a bicycle that didn't fit me. Did not say a single word about incorrect fitment. Awesome experience at this bike shop from start to finish. I called about a bike fit, the person on the phone said they were really busy and would call me back, and she did (I have called many other bike shops around town and they say they will call back and never do). When I came in for my fitting, Randy was very thorough and very professional. I could tell that he knew his mountain biking. Hands down the worst bike shop I've ever encountered. Randy, the owner, is a complete DB, I tried to purchase a Specialized bike through him, he argued with me through the entire purchase, would not help me make changes, was completely willing to sell me a bike that was clearly too large, then backed out of the agreement we made. I spoke with the Specialized rep and they noted other complaints and said they were re-evaulating their relationship with College Cyclery. The kid could be more useful and know more so he could help. But because of the old man that I've had to deal with for the first time ever I won't be back. I have had nothing but an extremely positive experience with this bike store/shop. They helped me pick out a great bike, and have followed the sale with excellent service. Usually, when I've needed some minor repair, they do it the same day. They are friendly and professional. I don't know what else to say! I have two bike shops I like. This is my stop when in midtown. It's a tight space full of any cycling merchandise you could possibly want. And a great very knowledgeable staff. Thank heavens for also being pet friendly as Sheela was shopping with me when we first stopped here. Looking for Head and tail lights for my bike, as I was still riding into the fall and the sun wasn't holding out long enough for me to get home. I was recommended this place by a coworker, ended up buying a bike from them, but it's been downhill after that. I brought my bike in for a service and they made fun of me for upgrading to better handlebars. I gave them another shot with a brake service (my brake levers were very squishy and didn't actually apply the brakes enough). Paid their fee, they "fixed" it that day which was a nice turn around time, but turns out they didn't actually do anything to the brakes. Would not recommend, unless you're buying. read more

I've avoided them for years even though they are just blocks away from my home. I couldn't have been more wrong. Their prices are fair, their selection is excellent and their service is outstanding! HORRIBLE SERVICE!!!! This is hands down the worst bicycle shop we have ever been to. Not only did they not service my bike for what I brought it in for, they lied to our faces about what was and wasn't done, there wasn't an employee there that was on the same page, they scratched my bike in various places, and sent the bike back with us in worst condition then it was when we brought it in. The owner Randy is a terrible business owner and has NO morals. Amy has extremely bad customer service, changes her story every other time you call to check status on your bike, and will flat out lie due to lack of knowledge. Kevin ( a supposedly new employee ) has no clue about the profession he is in. College Cyclery will ruin the sport of cycling for anyone. I would bring my bike to a Walmart bike assembler over College Cyclery any day of the week. Please be AWARE!!!!! read more

Randy set me up with a new e-bike last year and dialed in the geometry to match my height, weight and riding position. If you want a disposable bike don't go here. It's mid to upper end bikes and equipment. If you want a bike that will work for you for a long time then this is your place. read more

Stopped in to grab some brake rotors. Ignorant to the market price of the brake rotor I was purchasing, they sold me one new rotor for double the retail price of said rotor. They charged $80 for the new rotor and then said they'd sell me a slightly used same rotor for $40. Later when I actually did research on the rotors I realized that this particular rotor sells for $45 brand new. When I was reviewing my receipt, the used rotor that they said they'd sell to me for $40... they actually charged $50.. Pretty Slimey business tactics in my opinion. I always try to support local places, but this place will get 0% of my business. I would suggest going to some of the other great bike shops in town such as Drop Out , high sierra cycling, or Black Rock Bikes. read more

In my opinion it seems that one could expect to pay between 50-75% more on bicycles and accessories than comparable stores. I've bought two items there out of emergency needs. One was an inner tube that they charged me $8.60 for, and I found the same tube in other stores for $5.99. Specialized's pricing to dealers is $1.21 (google it yourself). I mean I like to support local business but this is absurd, they mark up the tube 711 percent?!! Finally, they gave me the wrong tube, thankfully I dummy checked them on the way out of the store. read more

Recently I bought some cycling shoes and some other accessories worth around $60.00. so as to get started in road biking. The shoes were on sale and I got a good bargain. I could not figure out how to fit the clips(for the pedals) on the shoes, went back to the shop next day and asked Randy if he could help me do it, and he said he would do it for 5 BUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!. Now, I am not cheap, but I just bought the shoes from him and was gonna buy more biking stuff from him gradually and i told him it would not be fair for him to charge me. He did not budge. Went to the Reno Cycle Project on fourth street and the kid there did it for free and it took him a minute!!!!!! I actually felt dumb it was so easy. My sister and I rode our bikes through a patch of wretched goat heads. Oh no! Bicycle bain.With the tubes in our tires quickly deflating we were forced to walk our bikes from South Virginia, near the Atlantis to the nearest bike shop that I knew of. This happened to be the College Cyclery. We had never been there before, only seen it in this busy section of midtown. Just one of my tires was flat. My sister had one flat and the other pretty low. I walked in expecting to shell out $4-6 for replacement of a new tube, as quoted by my man, an avid downhill mountain biker. When we asked the curly headed blonde dude how much it would cost he said $15!! Per tire!!!! Wha?? But, it was a hot summer day and we really wanted to ride our bicycles, we wanted to ride our bikes!! We sucked it up and waited what seemed like an exorbitantly long time for the man to do what should be a simple and quick procedure for an experienced bike mechanic. I felt that the crew was somewhat patronizing too, responding as if we were a couple of silly amateur girls on bikes that cost less than 6,000 dollars. Forty five dollars plus tax later we were on the road again. With the wind in our hair and the sun on our backs we quickly put the expensive memory behind us. In the long run, however, we certainly will not forget the experience. If this is truly a cyclery for college students, it must be for those rich college kids who are living out of their wealthy parent's pockets. It certainly is not for us po' people, who will push on by next time and learn to do it ourselves. read more

I recommend avoiding this place. The guy who is I think the owner, but I'm not sure, seems like a bit of a con artist. He called me and tried to basically say he couldn't give my bike back to me because of same brake issue but then when I challenged him and asked questions he quickly backed off and then all of a sudden somehow managed to solve the issue. I brought my son's bike in for repair. They were so friendly and helpful. They even pumped up his tires. My son also bought new grips for his handle bars and they installed them for free. I live near College Cyclery and needed a a quick flat repair on my folding bike. Well, they did a great job with the flat but now my brake cables are all twisted and the brake pads on both tires are in a death grip on my rims. I called College Cyclery and explained the issue - and was told I'd have to pay for the privilege of having them undo their own weirdness. So much for convenience! This was supposed to make my life a little easier, but instead has spawned another errand. In short: the Reno Bike Project is pretty cool, maybe you should check them out first. read more

The very first job I had was in a bike shop as a sixteen year old kid. That bike shop and every other bike shop I've ever stepped foot inside is inhabited by eccentrics. From my experience people that own, and or work in sporting goods retail are a weird sort. College Cyclery is no exception to that perception of mine. Having visited this shop over the past three years I have purchased one bike, numerous tubes, seats, tires and miscellanea like lights and otherwise. Every visit has been a different experience ranging from "wonky" to "generally professional". I believe this variance of experiences is attributable to the unusual and often socialy inept breed that congregates around two wheeled human powered transportation devices. Reluctantly admitting that I myself fall into this category as well. In defense of the staff I would suggest that directly across the street is the Ponderosa hotel a veritable scourge within its own right. It's strange inhabitants I have witnessed pester staff to utilize the phone or bathrooms (this is well documented amongst the neighboring businesses, including Starbucks and the nearby bars). Overall I feel that this is a local business with strengths and flaws, and one that I will continue to do business with as long as I remain in the northern Nevada area. I accept that the staff suffer from the same flaws I do and allow them the courtesy to bumble about, occasionally making mistakes and improving upon them when they occur. The bicycle I purchased was assembled properly,(a well assembled bike is an outstanding achievement as far as I'm concerned) and I paid a competitive price for the vehicle in a local establishment. I like College Cycling, and I feel I receive a good value here. That's a fair sentiment. Also it's poor form to ask any mechanic, bicycle or otherwise to borrow tools. Buy or bring your own. read more
