Absolutely fantastic food and atmosphere! This place screams of Tacoma culture and has all the right settings of a killer bar & grill! That staff was super friendly and welcoming. I was given a recommendation of the jalapeño poppers for my first try here and they are jaw dropping incredibly delicious! The prices are hands down some of the best you'll find for the high quality & tasty food along with very reasonable drink prices. This place is a great place to haunt on Sundays in football season. Great food and drinks and always have the game on. Great location and atmosphere! Daytime waitstaff are excellent. With Heather leaving the kitchen, the food quality has definitely been declining. Fries are dripping with old grease, or grease is not hot enough. Sandwiches have declined due to a change in the quality of bread, and grilling with "old grease". Definitely need to start changing up the menu alittle! Marcy's clam chowder on Friday's is 2nd to none. Always a good poor on the drinks, and an OK beer menu. read more

12/30 Tried Coles again for breakfast. Chicken fried steak. The CFS was crispy and gravy yummy. Toast on point. But eggs over medium were less than over easy and hash browns obviously cooked at 8am and in the warmer greasy slab with over cooked edges. I'd avoid for breakfast at this point unless just having beverages and toast. --- I am excited to see Coles resurrected from the ashes. I loved the dark smelley bar and open mic nights of the late 90s. Gone is the sticky floor and bar flies replaced with amazing dark wood, brick walls, and a blue back lighted bar. I've been their twice in the last 24 hours. Once for Friday night birthday party and the subsequent hungover breakfast the next day. What a delightful surprise to see Shari from Hanks on point when we arrived. It was crowded and loud. I mean loud loud. Lots of ambient noise. Drinks were great. Nachos with what seemed like homemade chips and fried pickles were amazing. Jalapeño poppers aren't my thing. The cream cheese filling was delightful but the jalapeños were raw or maybe undercooked. But such a great time and good vibe. The next morning as we dust off our hangovers we decide to go back for breakfast. Good coffee. Good servers. Mimosas and Manmosa well priced. Food on the other hand, well meh. It came out super fast. Biscuits and gravy. Lukewarm. Hash browns. Like they had been sitting a long while. Crispy but stale. I ordered the hash and it came out close to cold. Eggs underdone and what seemed like the only item made to order. Large chunks of raw green bell pepper and onion that I picked through. Cheese not melted. Hash browns again well over done. Flavor. Meh. Night time I give four stars. AM 2.5 stars. There are so many awesome places to go for breakfast in Tacoma and right now Coles needs some work. If they can get made to order breakfast right, then Coles will have it all. We should have walked out right away...we don't go out very often because we can't afford to. We immediately noticed it was extremely loud. We sat in one spot close to the door and we noticed people were coming in and standing behind us and up the isle like they were waiting for a table but there were empty tables. Then we noticed they were together and talking together loudly. They were a bicycling club. They eventually walked out front and stood around talking loudly, I'm not sure what that was about. We switched tables when they were near our table and I commented to our waitress that they were loud and she just smiled. The food was ok. It seemed a tad over cooked and not hot after we waited a while for it to arrive. We wanted to like it but didn't and can't recommend the place. read more

I know I gave coles a 4 star review my first visit, but there customer service was just horrible our 2nd experience. I'm a stickler for customer service and they failed. Long story short...we sat ourselves without being acknowledged. 5 min after sitting ourselves, our waitress arrived, dropped off our menus and left, not asking what we would like to start off with. 10 min she came back, and we ordered drinks, and 10 min later came back and asked what we wanted, still indecisive because they were still serving bfast, we said we didn't know. I came here to try the wings, which I was told were some of the best in Tacoma. We ordered three different flavors, and found them a bit lacking-- the sauce was good, though the teriyaki was a bit overly salty. The meat itself didn't seem good quality. Crown Bar is killing Coles on the wings front. In fact, all the food we ordered was felt to be pretty subpar, especially the "Philly style" french dip, which turned out to be a pretty "meh" french dip with the addition of shredded cheese blend (cheese SAUCE is standard for "Philly style"--or melted provolone at the very least!) and bell peppers. The caesar salad dressing tasted like straight up mayo; we didn't even finish it. The service was good, and I'll probably be back for drinks since it's just a few blocks from home, but the food was so disappointing that I seriously doubt I'll be eating there again. read more

I don't usually review a place when they first open, but it seems this place is up to the test! Very happy to see them, first of all. Not a big fan of the other choices in downtown Ruston (except the new BBQ place, Mitchell's. They kick ass!!) We came last night, their first Friday open. The service was friendly and smooth. It was really busy, but still did a great job! The fish burger was delicious and had lotsa nice, whitefish but light breading. The roasted pork sandwich and chowder made my husband's eyes roll back in his head with pleasure. To top it all off, the fries were amazing, and the prices were a happy surprise! With tax, our 2 meals and 3 drinks came to $35! When's the last time that happened????? They are working on a few quirks, but it's to be expected in week one. They are quick to address it, and make it good. They also don't crank their music so loud you can't converse with the person sitting next to you. Came to check out Ruston's neighborhood bar, Cole's. Despite not having a pool table, this place is pretty cool. Excellent staff, really good food, and friendly people. Definitely not crowded by any means, but not dead and boring either. Just a really cool, chill bar to come and hang out and have a few drinks with friends - or by your damn self! Seriously, don't worry, the ppl here don't judge - they'll have a a friendly conversation with anyone who wants to have one. If nothing else, that is definitely Cole's biggest strength - friendliness and willingness to engage with pretty much anyone who walks in the door. The food is good for the price. Cheap, I would give the food quality a B. I would have given this place a 4 star, BUT the service was a C- at best. It was a drop and go service at best and at times it seemed as if the waiter was avoiding our table. Came out with some peeps to check-out the new place in T-Town. Sad to say, we weren't super impressed. :( The service was slow, though cheery, which was appreciated. Waters didn't go empty and drinks were refilled quickly. However, after waiting over 30 mins for French fries, veggie salsa and chips (don't really recommend the salsa and chips: basically just corn and black beans, not a whole lot of flava), nachos (nothing too special) and jalepano poppers (delish), the fries were cold (no bueno!). Went today with my sister for the first time. Food was good, but the service wasn't what I would have hoped. Our drinks took about 15 minutes to arrive, food took way too long, maybe close to 40 minutes. When our food came, both orders were wrong. Then took about 15+ minutes to bring out fries. Then she forgot my sisters second drink. I have been in the same industry for 19 years, I understand things happen, but I was not impressed. In my opinion it wasn't busy enough to be so in the weeds and forgetting things. Our waitresses remained friendly throughout our experience and didn't charge us for everything because they new mistakes were made. They made it right for me, without me mentioning anything. We came for breakfast and though the place was half full we felt like we got a lot of attention from the one waitress working the whole room. Somehow she managed to mix drinks and serve everyone promptly. Food was good but nothing was spectacular. Great atmosphere, rustic decor, friendly and accommodating staff, really really good food and a menu pricing structure dating back to the 90's. $5 dollar appetizers and it wasn't even happy hour. The search is over for our "Go To" watering hole. Can't wait to try out their breakfasts. And for the icing on the cake, they are open until 2am. There was not one empty seat for the 2 hours we were there. Could be a chance you may have to wait for a table, but it's worth it. read more

Four of us had a great dinner at Cole's on Sunday night. I am not sure what the complaints are about the service, we had great and attentive service throughout the evening. The fried fish dishes for exceptional, including the fish sandwich which often ends up being tasteless. This one was terrific. The burger was a "tavern" burger that delivered on all levels. I love the location and the look of the place but it lacks personal friendly service. When he finally showed up, our waiter actually said "what do you need, menus or somethin'?" Ugh. Good selection of spirits, beer and wine but the service was lackluster. Food was just okay. I had the grilled chicken sandwich and I do not understand cutting corners by using cheap untoasted bread. Such an easy fix. Fries were fabulous! This would be a highly desirable place if just a few tweaks were made - starting with a friendly welcome from staff and just a little attention to detail. Great Prices, Satisfying food, Big portions. Great combinations. My favorite part is the $5 appetizers. If you sit at the bar, the kitchen staff pokes their heads out every once in a while, always friendly despite the hot (even hotter) temperatures back there. Chloe is a fun sarcastic bartender. My husband and I were excited when we heard the newest tavern from the owners of Hank's and the Parkway was going to offer brunch, so we went this first weekend they've been open. The interior is gorgeous and unique. Our server, Connie, was wonderful. She was very sweet and seemed to know exactly when we wanted something. And of course, just like at Hank's, the food was delicious. My husband tried the eggs and hash, and I had the veggie scramble. Perfect portions for us. We are looking forward to going back and trying all the dishes. Prices are very reasonable and a pleasant surprise, nine dollars per dish. We're looking forward to next weekend, stopping for brunch and then going on down to Point Defiance to walk on Owens Beach. read more

Sadly, we were greeted by rude and unwelcoming staff who did not even bother to say hi or give us a menu. Ten minutes later we get some service but again, just got a "what do you want" instead of anything polite or friendly. Their beer selection, however, was great, I would have also liked to try their food had I been given the opportunity to order some. I would have understood if the place was busy but we were one of maybe four or five groups there, so I don't know why my friend and I were seen as such an inconvenience.
