Coleman's is billed as an Authentic Irish Pub. For one thing, it definately has the decor. The rich darkwoods all over the enormous, wrap-around bar are impressive. But Coleman's doesn't deserve the word Pub in their name. This is a bar with a restaurant. On any Friday or Saturday night, Coleman's is packed with twenty-somethings from the entire Syracuse metro area. The one goal here is to drink your arse off, and plenty people do it. Unfortunately, in can be really difficult to strike up conversation here, as everyone travels in cliques. If you show up late in the evening and are sober than most, you can wander the establishment almost undetected and observe the crowd, (bring your people-watching skills!) Mostly it is small groups of friends huddled together, nursing each others enebriated state. No, a pub requires more than just decor, it requires the atmosphere... and that means people, conversation, etc. Try holding a conversation with a bartender at Colemans on a Friday or Saturday. Unless you are a pretty young thing with cleavage hanging out, the publican is going to gladly serve your beverage and then move on to the next paying customer. Coleman's also participates in some of the strangest pasttimes. For example, "Green Beer Sunday" is when a tanker truck of green beer is delivered to the pub. They set up an enormous tent outside so people can consume outdoors even in winter. And don't forget St. Paddy's Day. This place will have a line several hundred long out the door, all day and night long. Granted, if you visit Syracuse, you must pay a visit to Coleman's. But it's never going to qualify as your local pub. read more

I came here recently for drinks and some lunch. We started with the chicken dip, and it wasn't what I expected. It reminded me of Mexican food, which is strange in an Irish pub. It tasted ok, though. We split a burger with cheese, ordered medium-rare. It came out medium, but the flavors were all there so I didn't mind. I also liked the bun it came on. For a burger, I found it average. They definitely pour a Guinness correctly. They also have a house beer (Pete's Pale Ale) made specifically for them that I tried but didn't really like. The bartender was really friendly, and the other customers were also friendly which is something I appreciate when sitting at the bar. Overall, it was a nice experience. Parking is in a big lot next to the building, and over the summer they have outdoor concerts on Thursdays with dollar drafts. read more

I was really pleasantly surprised at how good lunch was. I am used to all the fake Italian and Irish stuff that seems to permeate Syracuse so I wasn't expecting too much. So much for my preconceptions. Coleman's really did us proud. The bangers and mash with onion gravy was delicious as was the authentic Shepherd's pie. A starter of very crisp fresh Crab cakes, enough for both of us was accompanied by a really spicy remoulade. Eric, who served us was quick and very pleasant . The only negative for me was the Guinness head didn't have the staying power until the end. Tasted good though. Well kept and nicely poured. I go here solely for their cheese steak sandwich. So. Good. And, really, that's about it. My friends live within walking distance so I've been quite a few times, and it doesn't really do it for me as a bar. I think the layout makes it feel cramped and it's usually too loud. Also, we had an issue with a bartender being snotty to my friend about the wine she was ordering, which was just off-putting. Nice pub look to the place though. Really, it's nothing remarkable. Well, the decor in Coleman's is unique and authentic. It's a hot spot during St. Patrick's Day and I can see why. The full bar is a good size, the atmosphere is buzzing and don't forget about their famous green beer! However, the dining experience was a bit disappointing. I ordered a Margarita for a drink and it was almost sickeningly sweet...i could only finish half of it. The meal was OK. I ordered pasta primavera with an alfredo sauce and the sauce was lumpy and not of a smooth consistency. it was also very heavy and I couldn't even eat half of it. So, I guess if you are looking for a fun hang-out spot at the bar, Coleman's is the place to go (or so I hear, I have never been there just for the bar)...but the dining experience is somewhat different. read more

I remember Coleman's from the day's when it was a little bar where the girls were served from one entrance and the guys from the other. Yep! Around mid 1960's Well we always found a way to mix and it was so much fun! Coleman's is still one of the best Irish pubs in the area. Having grown up in Syracuse I can relate to Christopher P.'s comments about Coleman's. Syracuse as four sides and Coleman's is one of those bars that attracts groups from all sides. Unfortunately, East Siders usually do not mingle with West Siders. Same goes with the North Siders. Sometimes there is cross pollination. Alchohol eventually does the trick. At one point Coleman's was probably more of a traditional pub but it has expanded multiple times over the years. Bartender was very knowledgeable about all beers on tap and even offered samples. I ordered a side of the cheesy-gnocchi and the cheese platter app and was not disappointed. Food arrived quickly and hot and was even given a few recommendations from the bartender as to what brew would pair nicely with the meal. Hosted an impromptu group event here mid-week with about 25 people. The staff was great and was super accommodating. In addition to the fantastic service, the food was incredible. We ordered Beef on Weck sandwiches, Coleman Club sandwiches, chicken tenders, as well as Irish fries for the group. There was something for everyone, and the food was served promptly with all of the appropriate condiments. The club sandwiches were extremely fresh and had real, carved turkey breast meat along with the right amount of other fixings on the sandwich- easy to eat and delicious. We live out of the state, and we're really disappointed we can't visit more often. While not your typical Irish fare from this establishment, the beef on weck comes highly recommended. Very highly recommended!!! This sandwich is something we had never experienced, but we are now dreaming of another beef on weck sandwich. Nice, juicy and tender sliced beef on a delicious and very fresh kimmelweck roll. Horseradish on the side allowed everyone to season to taste- it was a crowd favorite, and we will definitely be back the next time we're in town! read more

I have a serious soft spot for Coleman's Irish Pub - I've been coming here for dinners and family celebrations while visiting my Syracuse-based grandparents since I was a little girl in the late 80s. At the time, I didn't care how well the Guinness was poured (though I remember thinking it was super cool that they'd draw a shamrock in the foam)...I was happy as long as I could get a plate of chicken fingers and cup of milk, and I was always enthralled by the mini leprechaun door and bus stop at the main entrance. Fast forward 30 years.... My grandmother passed away earlier this month, prompting my entire family to travel back to Syracuse for her funeral, and we opted to hold her post-funeral Mass luncheon at Coleman's. Boy were we glad we did! We were seated in their upstairs room, which offered lots of extra space for mingling, and a leprechaun sized table and chair that my 3 year old niece absolutely LOVED! The hearty food and free-flowing drinks (all with impressive ticket times) were just what we needed after spending time graveside on a chilly October afternoon. We were served by Josh, and he was absolutely wonderful: hospitable, attentive, gracious and good humored (especially when some of my drunk relatives cornered him and started telling him their life stories...as they do). In short, our afternoon luncheon at Coleman's was the brightest of bright spots in an otherwise very tough day - thank you all! read more

My sister is a big fan of Coleman's fried haddock dinner; she thinks it is the best haddock she has ever had. Therefore, to celebrate her birthday, I took her to Coleman's, along with our sister-in-law, for a haddock dinner on July 22, 2019. Unfortunately, the waitress told us they had sold out of haddock the day before. I explained to our waitress that I drove from Massena, which is 3 hours north of Syracuse, for the express purpose of taking my sister to Coleman's for a haddock dinner. Much to our surprise, we were told that if we did not mind waiting a few minutes, someone was going out to get some haddock from a local store. He did, Coleman's chef cooked it and it was as wonderful as the haddock my sister remembered having before. Spent a Thursday night here after a friend recommended it as his favorite bar in Syracuse. I'm so happy I was introduced to Tipp Hill. The Irish flair is so easy to love. The crowd is 20-30's. The size and layout is convenient to move around. A live band was playing (and taking requests) which was fun. Plenty of space to socialize, including an outdoor patio area. Bartenders were attentive despite the immense amount of people trying to get their attention for a drink. Reasonably priced. I did not eat and therefore cannot speak on the food. Walking in to find a beautiful wooden interior was a nice surprise. Did I mention that they have a private lot for parking--and plenty of it. I had the scallop and spaghetti dish. It was delicious! It's simply, baileys and amaretto liquor nothing more and nothing less. When the shot came it looked like a shot of espresso with whipped cream on top. I will admit, I told him straight up... sir, this is not what I asked for this isn't the proper shot and I'm not paying for this until you make me a new one. He apparently got offended and rudely asked for my ID again although I was ALREADY asked at the door. I gave it to him. After that he made the proper shot rudely . Due to his attitude his CLEAR attitude, I refused to pay. As a customer, every bartender should know how to make drinks. If not, they should ask . Since he gave me 1) bad service and 2) an attitude ... i will never return to colemans. As a regular and an avid bar connoisseur it truly sucked this had to happen. Please, to lessen confusion within your bar... properly train the bartenders , and if they are wrong they should own up to being wrong instead of being unlawfully rude and absolutely atrocious to customers . And in addition, my aunt Tina frequents your pub and she got food poisoning ! She called your bar numerous times with zero response . Syracuse . I sat at the bar and the service was impeccable, the bartender Alexis suggested their classic pub fare dish, the "Beef O'Flaherty" and it did not disappoint! We enjoyed a classic fudge cheesecake that was to die for as a dessert! The managers Dennis and Matt also provided great service and a willingness to help. After such a great visit I wanted to purchase a sweater from the pub gift shop for a souvenir, they were out of my size but swiftly checked their inventory to find me one! Went to Coleman's this past Friday (12.26.08) for dinner and drinks. I'm giving this 4 stars and I'd break it down as 3 Stars for the food and 5 Stars for the drinks / atmosphere. The parking was great as we found a fantastic space right in front of the entrance. It was already starting to fill up around the bar area and we were able to get a table for 4 almost immediately. They had a coat room where you could hang your coat (a rarity in the SouthtEast). We ordered a couple of beers and then I ordered the Guiness Burger and it came with Onion Straws and a potato pancake. For authenticity...I think they do a great job. However, I asked for the burger to be cooked medium-rare..and it came out more like well-done. Oh...well...I should have sent it back. But then again, they should have cooked it to order! Our waitress was fine...nothing memorable. The food was interesting....but as I remember it.....British Isles food generally is crap. This really wasn't much better. The much funner part of the night was the atmosphere / drinks. By the time we finished dinner (maybe 9ish) the place was really starting to fill up. However, I was still able to manage to get up to the bar sans problema. The drinks were very affordable and there was lots of people watching to be had. It's located within a Irish neighborhood. Cute decor outside, including a leprechaun's size phone booth! Appetizers: Irish soda bread (good but the butter was cold and it was hard to spread) and onion rings (huge and pretty tasty with a mayonnaise dipping sauce). Entree: I had the Shepherd's Pie. I also sampled the Beef O'Flaherty and the Chicken Pub Pie. The latter two were served with irish fries (a cross between potato chips and french fries). Both pies were delicious. The Beef O'Flaherty is apparently their most popular dish. It was very tasty but it had way too much blue cheese in my opinion! Next time, I would get the Beef O but ask for a reduced amount of cheese Dessert: Deep fried cheesecake. Yep, you read right. It was pretty good and the fact that it was in a puff pasty definitely added to the flavor. But the cheesecake inside the pastry sort of fell apart. It tasted more like deep fried uber-fatty ricotta cheese. I only had one bite because it was way way too rich for my taste! It was covered in caramel, but I wish they had just sprinkled it with sugar and cinnamon. Overall a great place. A little overkill on the cheese on the Beef O and I wouldn't have the deep fried cheesecake again. read more

Coleman's is one of my favorite places to eat around the Syracuse area. The menu isn't the most expansive, but what's on it is to die for. I usually get the grilled chicken sandwich or the open race reuben--you can't go wrong with either. They also have Guinness onion rings that are absolutely delicious. I would also suggest getting a side of the Guinness sauce on your burger or chicken sandwich if you're not a big ketchup or mayonnaise fan. As for drinks, you have a huge variety of choices--everything from local brews to the more common stuff. You can also get Baileys and coffee if you're up for that sort of thing. The best part? This place is just so cool. The food is delicious and the kids (and adults) will delight over the "Leprachaun Door" outside (When I was little, the owner used to let kids crawl through, though I don't know if he does that anymore!). The service is also very good and they host private parties of which my family has held 2. Fun fact: the country's only "reverse" traffic light is situated on Tipparary Hill near Coleman's. For any tourists out there, it's fun to know that this light has the green on the top at the insistence of an early very-heavy Irish population. read more

Stopped in here for lunch while in the Tipp Hill area. I was really surprised; the food was CHEAP but quite good. If memory serves, I had haddock (which was fresh and cooked properly) for something like $10. You really don't tend to find decent food in a bar like this often, in my experience. The service was excellent. Now, to be clear, it was not Wolfgang's Steakhouse level of quality. This is a pub so let's keep it in perspective. All things considered, the balance of quality, price, and service was beyond the normal ratio, hence 4 stars. They also have a large parking lot which is a plus. read more

As a family we often enjoy Coleman's. The food never disappoints. Of particular interest for food are the Guinness beef stew and fired haddock. Both are excellent with generous portions. I have eaten here before, never really had a complaint... until yesterday... our table ordered 2 grilled ribeye steaks, which was one of the dinner specials last night (6/28) at $25 per... I asked for "rare, could not possibly undercook it rare... if it pleaded for its life prior to being eaten I was ok... that kind of rare..." it came out very over cooked... closer to well than it was even medium... but I have a hard time blaming the cook... as this steak was realistically last than a half an inch thick... so overcooking it probably happened fast... I didn't complain or speak up because I worked in service for a long time and if a bad steak is the worst part of my day then I dont have a lot to be upset about in life... but I will say I was very disappointed, and it will probably keep me from coming back for any food that isn't traditional Irish. read more

Menu was confusing... choose 2 for $8, I asked the waitress what I could pick from... ended up getting up charged for both my choices, when I thought I was picking what I was supposed to for $8 (just went back and re read the menu and I understand it now, but at the time when I asked her to explain, she did not). The waitress was attentive and friendly. The food was not that good... why are the Ruben's open faced? It also lacked sauerkraut... my salad was far from fresh and served in a tiny bowl making it difficult to eat. The red onions on my salad were not fresh kind slimy and lacked any flavor- yet it was a $1 up charge. I can say that the fries shaped like chips were good. Go here for the beer and authentic Irish atmosphere... for a big SU game, St Patrick's day, green beer sunday, after the shamrock run etc.... but not for a good meal, unless your meal is french fries and a beer. read more
