A lovely little gem in the Washington Heights area, despite the coldness of gelato, every time I see that Cold Spoons is still open, it warms my heart! While not much to look at, and certainly not a place that anyone would consider "fancy," they are fancy where it counts: in the service and the quality of the food. Over the years, no matter who is on staff, they are always friendly and patient, even when I'm a bit more indecisive, or ask for a shake (if you can get a shake, always get a shake) which is more time-consuming. I've worked near Cold Spoons Gelato for more than four years, but didn't know about them for the first couple years and never think to stop now that I am aware of them. It wasn't until I recently had to go a different way home from a Bucks game due to a highway closure that I passed Cold Spoons while they were open and I was in the mood for something sweet. My son got a waffle cone of chocolate gelato and I got a waffle cone of peanut butter and jelly gelato. My son enjoyed his, but honestly, I don't know if he's ever had ice cream or gelato that didn't like, so take that for what it's worth. I could mildly taste the peanut butter, but there wasn't any jelly rippled in the gelato and the employee didn't scoop from the top of the container where the jelly primarily was. I didn't dislike it, rather, I was disappointed cause I felt it had potential and didn't live up to it. I tried a sample of the watermelon gelato before going with the PB&J and I wish I had just gone watermelon. It wasn't super strong tasting either, but moreso than the peanut butter. I've been going to Cold Spoons Gelato since a was a small toddler. I've grown up on several of their flavors, (my go-to from the age of 4 to present day being smurfberry & raspberry). Pro-tip: Their Tuesday special includes a free size up (ie: large for the price of a medium). I went on a Tuesday. Yahtzee. Their large allows for three different flavors. I went for two: Their chocolate peanut butter and their chocolate hazelnut. If you know me, you know one of my favorite flavor combinations is that of chocolate and peanut butter. Truly. I'm pretty sure I could live on this flavor combo in it's various forms. But, I digress. Here, however, I found my self digging the chocolate hazelnut a bit more. It was far more nutty. The chocolate peanut butter tasted like mostly chocolate (not saying that is necessarily a bad thing...chocolate is, in my estimation, always a very good thing). My experience here was one of discontent. Sadly, the quality of the product was subpar. The milk tasted spoiled in both the Pumpkin and the Sea Salt flavors. There are few worse tastes that milk gone off. Was this from the milk not being fresh in the first place during the production? The owner said she made it fresh on Tuesday and it was Thursday when I sampled it. Or was it because it had been left out too long? The main point is that my first impression of Cold Spoons was one that left me angry and there is little one can do to make up for a bad first impression. On the plus side the young woman working there was very kind. I lived in Italy for four years and have had some religious quality gelato. This is not it. Not even close. After seeing the occasional check ins I finally got over to check them out on a warm summer day. The place is like a hipster kind of ice creme shop was the vibe I was getting from the decor. The place has more room than seating which was weird because the center of the room was open. The young lady who helped me was super nice and did a great job. There is 24 pans with various flavors which made it hard to pick but the mixed berry sounded good. If your used to the MDs 49 cent cone than you will shocked at what $3.66 got me on my visit. I was served a tiny plastic cup that was not even filled to the edges of the tiny cup and maybe an inch over the rim WTF, this is absolutely the smallest most expensive ice creme that I have ever been served and I felt completely ripped off. I went to look at the pictures on yelp and sure enough every cup I saw was way bigger than what I was served so maybe this was a fluke but it was there one chance for my first impression and it was not good because I expected better with all the good reviews. Honestly the mixed berry was pretty good but I was left not feeling satisfied due to its small size and I would rather have had the MDs cone because my cold tread would have lasted longer on this hot summer day. I love coming here for gelato or sorbet! They usually have at least 20 flavors on deck so something is for sure to catch your eye. Smurfberry happens to be my favorite. How sad am I that after living so close to Cold Spoons for years, my first visit was just last night? Answer: pretty sad, because I've clearly been missing out. We opted for gelato instead of dessert at the restaurant we were at and it was a great decision, especially on a Tuesday where you get upsized for free. That meant I was able to try 3 flavors for something like $3.50 which is a great deal. I was pretty impressed with the selection of flavors - there's 10-12 cream flavors (hazelnut, pistachio, cookies and cream, etc) and 10-12 fruit flavors (mango, blood orange, lime, etc). Alas, they did not have the famed salted caramel during our visit so I chose hazelnut (delicious), cinnamon (also delicious) and bay leaf. The last one was my favorite - just enough bay flavor which I think is probably hard to get exactly right. Even my husband, who does not like herbal flavors at all, was a fan of the bay leaf. I appreciated that everything I tried was creamy and not icy and that the flavors tasted "fresh" and natural - not like flavor extracts. In contrast to gelatos I've had in Italy, I'd say the texture is spot on and perhaps the flavors here are somewhat less intense. That's not a criticism though - I really did love everything I tasted. Thoroughly appreciated the fact that the girl at the counter was willing to help me out with my food allergies. Flavors breakdown: -tiramisu: good, a little too sweet for my taste, but when combined with other flavors it was just fine -amatetto: super flavorful! Almost to the point that if I ate it by itself they dumped almond extract into the batter. Work on getting a more authentic taste. -Guiness: my fiancee loved this and he loves guiness. I once went to a VIP type meal at a local restaurant where course after course of delicious food was provided to me free of charge and all I can tell you about that meal is that it ended with Cold Spoons salted caramel gelato. After that, all else ceased to exist. It's life-alteringly good. Cold Spoons is awesome! Though I certainly love my ice cream and custard, CS is a nice change of pace, located on a bustling corner of the Washington Heights neighborhood. They have a great variety of flavors, but I always get the same thing - a small with pistachio and caramel sea salt. Great combo! The pistachio has a REAL nut flavor and pieces of pistachio...yum. Indoor seating is available, but I usually opt for one of the cute benches outside to enjoy my treat. Perfect for a treat after dinner at Meritage, or before or after a movie at the Times. read more

SOOO much better than Paciugo! I thought this town didn't know good gelato, but that was only because I hadn't been to Cold Spoons. The friendly service was great - got to try a ton of different flavors, each better than the next. The sorbets are really tasty and not overly sweet The gelatos are creamy with great flavor and texture. My favorites: pistachio and hazelnut. I bought a pint of the "matcha green tea" (on a whim) which unfortunately didn't taste a ton like matcha. This is one of those places that makes me laugh at naysayers. When I lived out here in 2008 and they'd first opened, people were questioning the validity of gelato in this little neighborhood and how they'd have enough business to keep rolling. They had a great price structure from cups to quarts, had restaurant backing, and a great spot for all of the local foot traffic without any sort of competition. This place was genius in my mind. Six years later, I realized that I've never reviewed it despite all the random times I came by. Mostly because it was saved as a draft and I'm lazy. Incredibly out of character for me, I suppose. I really do enjoy this place, as do many others from a random assortment of backgrounds. I've seen the soccer car pool with 10 kids and a mom from a minivan next to the couple in the BMW convertible that rolled in from the Washington Circle ritz. The staff is fun, don't roll their eyes over your fourth "taste" and extremely patient. Seriously....10 kids at a time with more "uh's" than Master P. I will never volunteer to drive that nightmare, but these people (and the mom) weren't the slightest bit annoyed. I still go for my standards (great mint chip and stracciatella), but I have to point out their citrus flavors. I've had the lemon, orange and grapefruit (a favorite)...and they all taste pointedly different and correct. I've had a few places for custard and gelato that simply taste like generic citrus regardless of the flavor, but Cold Spoons has them down wonderfully. read more

Awesome gelato. I live about 2 miles from Cold Spoons and it's my goto place for a cold dessert almost every spring/summer weekend. The fruit sorbets have a very strong flavor and definitely represent their fruits, and the sweetness tastes very natural. If you happen to visit this place and cookies 'n cream is available that day, i highly recommend it. So many flavors to choose from, and they are more than willing to let you try as many flavors as you please before you come to a final decision. I nearly had a heart attack after eating the salted caramel gelato from this place, it is THAT good. I hate to hype things, but just typing this review makes me drool. This place is a little bit pricey but for the quality of yummy gelato, it is totally worth it. The other flavors we've tried are almond, chocolate, raspberry, blueberry, something vanillay with chocolate bits (it was a weird name) which are all creamy, delicious. I wish the cups were bigger just so the gelato would never end. You can also order gelato for a party - which is just over 40 bucks for a big gelato pan. Totally worth it for any gathering. I stopped at this place recently with my mother and 5 year old daughter. Let me begin with the fact that my daughter didn't even want to finish her gelato from this place! Are you kidding me? A child won' t even consume this? I wouldn't consider what they serve here to be gelato. Gelato is typically not frozen hard like ice cream. This garbage was. This place serves some of the best gelato I've ever had. You are able to mix two flavors in the small and large dishes; if you desire three flavors, order the large. In my last trip, I had a pineapple, kiwi, coconut combination. They also have packed pints to-go. I've had a lot of gelato in my short life thus far, and I can say with confidence that Cold Spoons serves up some of the best I've had. The sea salt caramel is excellent, especially side by side with surprisingly good pistachio. The fruit sorbets taste like, well, real fruit, and there are plenty of flavors to choose from. With the inclusion of a few interesting varieties like rum raisin, no one should have trouble finding a favorite here. The only downside is that this stuff, like gelato everywhere, is a little pricey, which makes the frozen custard competition look appealing. But the service is friendly and helpful, and each bite is worth every penny. read more

Could be an awesome place on a busy summer day.... I recently made a trip to Cold Spoons Gelato to take advantage of the Groupon deal offered a few months ago. I don't have much experience with gelato, having only had it a couple of times before in the past so I can't comment on how their pricing or flavor selection compares to other places, but Cold Spoons was decent. My boyfriend and I each got a large cup with three flavors (retail for 5.75). I selected the chocolate hazelnut, the cappuccino, and the tiramisu- he had the raspberry cabernet, the mango, and the lime sorbets. Hands down, the fruity "water based" flavors were better. The chocolate hazelnut was delicious and smooth, the way gelato should be, but the tiramisu and cappuccino flavors had some icy bits to them. Although I didn't care much for the raspberry cabernet (not a fan of alcohol flavors), both the mango and lime were smooth and flavorful. The drawback to Cold Spoons is that if you go at a time when it isn't busy, you really have no idea how fresh the gelato is. When I commented to the server that their raspberry must be popular as it was pretty much out, she told me that it was really more of a reflection of how long ago that particular flavor had been made. I would stop by again as they also have a selection of beverage creations that sound good to try out, but maybe sometime when there's more traffic through the store. read more

I live unhealthily close to this place, as in within walking distance. We are good friends. Especially on Tuesday, because you buy one size and get upgraded for free. The chile chocolate is flipping awesome. So are all of the flavours. Really great, unique flavours. (Except the one that looks like blue moon, it has a childish name and tastes awful.) I was looking for a frozen yogurt joint near Milwaukee, to find that there weren't any. BUT, in my search I found this little gem. My husband likes gelato, so I figured it would be worth a try! Its located in this little strip on Vliet, which has all these quaint little stores and restaurants. There is street parking around the neighborhood. The menu is on three LC TVs on the wall with a power point going on behind the menu. They have these cool drinks which are a mix of gelato and Izzy drinks. Sounds odd, but it was so yummy! I just wished that they had more berry options on their menu - I ended up having the blueberry, which isn't my fave, but it was yummy anyway! I would have preferred strawberry. My hubby just had a small, which was scoops of two different flavors. I also ordered a can of Izzy, although they didn't have the pom even though it was listed on the menu. (Maybe they were out?) Everything was good and fresh. My blueberry drink was full of real blueberry bits! The place was neat and clean, however they only have napkins at one register. No apparent AC, it was a HOT day, but it wasn't too stuffy inside. They have a cooler for to-go options, which includes a tray. They don't appear to have a website. This is my favorite place to get any kind of frozen dessert! Gelato is better than ice cream, sherbet, or any other kind of frozen dessert, imo. Anyways, there are tons of different flavors from the standard chocolate to raspberry to pear and hazelnut. My favorite is the coffee flavors and the pear. The gelato is creamy and sweet, and the staff is very friendly; they will let you sample flavors to figure out what you like, and then you can combine them. I tried another gelato place by Mayfair and it wasn't nearly as good, and neither is the gelato you can find at the grocery store. I totally recommend this place and voted for them in the Milwaukee A-List 2011 competition...5 stars read more

OMG!! Unbelievable! Discovered on Yelp and close to my house this trip was totally worth it! It was a hot Friday so a cold gelato was in order. Took Mom with me. I had the mango sorbetto and some strawberry basil sorbetto. The moment it hit my tongue I was hooked! It tastes like icy cold fruit! I don't remember what Mom got but she likes it as much as I did! I have been frequenting this establishment since it opened years ago and enjoyed the many flavors and Upgrade Tuesday specials. Sadly, I went in tonight to discover that not only was the Tuesday special gone but napkins have become a thing of the past as well. Whoever heard of an ice cream parlor with no napkins?
