As someone who grew up in Wisconsin and moved away- when I come back this is the only spot on my must-visit list when I come home. I bring all my out of town visitors here for iconic big, flat, buttery burgers and the best custard. You haven't had custard until you've had Kopps. All the people I bring say it's lived up to the hype...and I hype it a lot. It's loud inside, can get busy but it's worth it. Seating is mostly outside, there are a few standing tables inside but you'll likely want to take it somewhere else to eat (perhaps your car...) in the winter if it's packed. As a Wisconsin native, my girlfriend highly recommended this place as I just moved here and wow - how disappointing. We waited over 40 minutes for a couple of burgers, fries, and custard. After finally getting my order, I had to go back in after realizing half of it was missing! The burgers were subpar at best. They lacked flavor and the overall texture was like the burgers I make...after they were in the fridge overnight and were microwaved the following day. The fries were just standard shoestring fries like those from McDonald's so nothing to brag about. The custard was the only redeeming part of the meal. I do feel bad for the workers as they were extremely busy but that's part of the job. A better system should be put in place that both eases stress on the employees, while delivering high quality food. Unfortunately I didn't get that tonight. Key Lime Pie Custard: Kopp's was founded in Milwaukee in 1950, meaning they've been serving up jumbo size burgers and frozen custard for 70 years. Along with their everyday flavors, Kopp's offers two rotating flavors of the day. Key Lime Pie happened to be one of the flavors the evening of a friend's wedding and someone grabbed a couple quarts for a late-night dessert at the reception. As I'm not a fan of key lime pie in general, this is a flavor I would never go out and purchase on my own, but I thought I'd still give the custard a chance to prove me wrong. The large pie crust pieces found throughout are possibly the best I've had. I was blown away by how good they were! That said, the key lime custard was gross in my opinion, but like I mentioned, so is key lime pie. Way too tart for an ice cream or custard flavor. Avoid (unless you're a fan of key lime pie). Delicious but oh my god it's so much food. I got a double cheeseburger, expecting them to be on the slim side, but what I got...might actually be the biggest burger I've ever seen in my whole life. Very friendly, fast and efficient. Pricing was fair as well. My only issue is the lack of flavors. They have vanilla, and chocolate and then the flavor of the day. Which was cookie dough. This spot made me reconsider some big decisions. Christian McCaffrey goes #1 in most fantasy league drafts across platforms. But most people haven't had Kopp's. Rolling seven guys into an old school burger joint is a gluttons bread and butter. My eyes sparkled in wonderful awe of this menu. As I ordered, Carl made sure to offer a gauntlet of sauce options. He must've done his research, as the spicy mustard laid the foundation for other key players to excel. Prior to touching my entree, onion rings were gruesomely dragged into the aforementioned crown jewel of condiments. These things added a good two years to my life expectancy. Eating them brought forth sighs akin to a deep tissue massage. My stressors never stood a chance to these crispy circles of love! I breezed past this, but Carl and the rest of this crew were a machine. A beautiful noise. You think it's the hats? My final allotment of praise must be sweet. Normally butterscotch, banana or strawberry would get the bullpen call when a shake is on the line. But one elusive character caught my eye, marshmallow. Kopp's started in 1950 in Milwaukee by a German immigrant after husband had Parkinson's. She had no restaurant experience, and now some years later, 74 years, there are three restaurants. Each with their own identity! We have been enjoying their restaurants for some years... my husband use to venture to Kopp's on his bike for burgers for college .... Now some years later we enjoy our visit as a couple....we enjoy grilled chicken sandwiches and sundaes. Unfortunately like everything prices have gone up and size of sandwich has shrunk. Sandwiches use to be $2.10 in 1994 and today $6.50 with nothing on them except for grill onions, everything else is a charge including tomatoes. A bit pricey for this sandwich these days as just a thin piece of chicken. The custard is still yummy....a new flavor everyday that you can monitor online. Plus really good fudge. A junior sundae is $3.99. As for seating. Outside space on cement risers available or you can take it to go! Worth a stop for custard! read more

Even though this is not their original location, I do love the cow statues here and there is plenty of parking available. Their cheeseburger with the works is absolutely the best thing ever, and my friend recently told me that she gets it with blue cheese and a few other things, and I had no idea how many possibilities I was missing out on. We heard about Kopp's having the best custard in the city and we made it a priority to stop by. When we arrived a little after noon on Friday, we found the place almost completely packed to the gills, filled with people waiting to pick up food. The inside is pretty sparse and empty, with only hightop tables without seats along the outer edges. The center has a giant spoon and maraschino cherry statue as a focal point, with an unbroken line of counters with registers and pickup area to complete the space. If you only order custard and/or fountain drinks, you can basically get in and out within a couple of minutes as there's a service counter dedicated solely for those orders. If you order food, be prepared to wait. They do allow you to get custard immediately after your order if you prefer which helps to alleviate any hunger pangs. 1 Scoop Dish, Cookies N Cream, in a Cup ($3.50) - Now this is a proper custard. In Michigan, I'm used to places piping homemade custard out right from the machine into a cup. At Kopp's (which I've learned is common in Milwaukee), the custard is piped into large pails standing in a freezer. The employees then mix in the other ingredients and scoop the custard into cups/cones for you. The temperature of the freezers is set perfectly - the custard doesn't harden into a more ice cream like consistency. Instead, it's smoothly creamy and starts melting a bit along the edges as you eat. As you dig your spoon into the custard and pull out, smooth crags develop upwards along the surface. The custard texture is basically perfect. The sweetness, on the other hand, is a bit too much for me, but I'm not sure if it's from the added Oreo or the base custard. Kopp's is quite generous with the Oreo; you rarely get a bite without at least one piece of crunchy cookie inside. Through the Oreo, you can still taste the rich milkiness of the custard in the background. The custard comes in a 5oz container, piled up over the top, but still seems to be a bit less custard than how much competitors give. It's served with a piece of Oreo cookie on one side and a fan wafer on the other side. The fan wafer is flaky with multiple layers that come apart. It adds a very nice crisp element to the custard. (5/5) Double Cheeseburger, The Works ($9.25) - The burger took a bit over 20 minutes to come out. The first thing I noted was just how large the burger is in terms of width. It seems to be at least 5 inches wide, which is way bigger than a typical burger. This allows the ingredients to fit neatly in between the bun and as you eat, nothing ends up spilling out of the sides. The bun is slightly toasted, with the most obvious portions being near the edges due to the sauces and cheese softening the center. On top of the bun they place a pickle slice for some reason. At first I thought it was a mistake, but I see other pictures with it there. I guess it's just a quirky thing that Kopp's does. The beef patties here aren't too dense and are kind of on the drier side. Based on the texture and flavor they feel commercially made, like a typical fast food patty. They have a uniform thickness and a well defined perimeter. On top of each patty is a slice of melted cheese, adding creaminess and additional fatty moisture. I ordered the burger with The Works, which includes ketchup, mustard, pickle relish, and fried onions. The ketchup, mustard, and relish are pretty standard, adding sweetness and tanginess. The fried onions are browned in oil, not breaded and deep fried as I expected. They are sliced and add a bit of sweet freshness, without any raw onion bite. There is more than enough moisture from the sauces and cheese to counteract the dry patties. Still, as I was eating the burger I felt like there was just something missing. I can't think of what that would be, but it lingered in my mind the entire time I was eating. (3/5) The custard? Amazing. The burgers? Serviceable, but there's better elsewhere. Go here for the custard and you won't be disappointed. There's a reason this place is a Milwaukee institution. Bathrooms - Both men's and women's rooms. We were walking around downtown Milwaukee after the Bucks game and stopped by a cheese shop. There, I asked one of the ladies behind the checkout about the best custard spots in town. With full confidence, she told me to drive 10 minutes down the road to Kopp's, and that's exactly what I did. It's located in Glendale, which has a small-town feel. The parking lot is iconic--full of cow statues which make for great pictures. It was a little crowded when we walked in, but there was barely a line since it was well-staffed. We were able to place our order right away. There were a few flavors to choose from including chocolate and vanilla (which they have every day) along with 2 special flavors. I think one of the special flavors was mint, and I can't remember the second one. Either way, I always go with classic vanilla to decide if it's really worth it. Turns out it was fabulous. It was rich, creamy, fresh, and not too sweet. The vanilla flavor was strong as well. I tried chocolate from my boyfriend which wasn't too sweet either, but I definitely preferred the vanilla (no surprises there). Not only is the custard is super duper rich, but portions are quite generous. I couldn't even finish the smallest size. Choose wisely and avoid waste! I love frozen custard and as a recent transplant to the Midwest, I've been reveling in the opportunities to enjoy it more as it's not widely available on the East Coast. I was visiting Milwaukee for a day, and all the guides said you have to go to Kopp's! I got there in the mid-afternoon and it was busy; you can tell it's always busy. They have plenty of parking, some outdoor seating, and a bunch of cows in the back. Everyone there was working hard. I ended up just ordering a basic vanilla cone (you can't go wrong with vanilla) and the person at the register charged me for a small but gave me a medium.
