The house was perfect and worth every penny. I'll admit, I was intimidated at first when booking the house, but oh my gosh it could not have been easier. Communication when booking and up to arrival date with the agency could not have gone smoother and the response time was quick. When we arrived, we did need to contact them for something silly and they were attentive and the resolve was very quick. The walk to the beach was short and sweet. It was the best week of my life. I will hopefully be contacting Village Reality again next year but the only change would be for a bigger house. all though I'd want to do it again with just my girls, I think we may have recruited a few more people.

The location of our 6 bedroom house, Outer Banks Rental: #SN890 - SEA STAR, was located in a great area right off of the main road and just yards from the beach...it gets points for being near an awesome beach bar shack called the Fish Heads... ...but the house itself, however was very awkward in that the upstairs rooms did not connect to the downstairs inside..you had to physically go outside to get to the lower level amenities...normally for a beach trip this isn't so bad, but on a rainy or cold day, it just seems like poor development property planning in which the realty company bought what was very clearly a duplex and is selling it as a single family house, and trying to make it seem nice and convenient to have a "separate area". I suppose that is true if you're in a group with issues sharing space, but most trips like this people don't want to be isolated so extremely. The house definitely has some repair needs, and seemed to have mildew/mold on the ceiling/walls. shag carpet is brown and discolored from god knows what past incidents, but the house did not smell or have noticeable grave damage, sanitation issues or repair needs. I do not like the nickle and dimming approach to beach house rentals in which linens, TP and other such things are not stocked standard prior to arrival. These should be rolled up into the price and not at a gouged rate. I've stayed in many homes in OBX some for 20 people and smaller ones like the Sea Star, and this one was just simply, not as well kept or nice. There are better options in the same price range in nags head.

We rented a condo on the beach in Kill Devil Hills…read more 1st night (Saturday)--went out to dinner, came back and water was dripping thru the ceiling fan in our bathroom. No help from the emergency # except telling us to turn off the fan and put a wastebasket under the leak! A smoke detector in the 2nd bedroom started beeping--we took it down and it was full of water and dripping. Finally (after 3 calls) a nice workman from Joe Lam Realty came but couldn't figure where the leak was coming from. He went to the 2nd floor and discovered holes in the walls and huge fans drying the place out. 2nd day--went out to dinner, came back and water was pouring from the bathroom vent plus dripping from the light switch in the 2nd bathroom! We had to pack up a week's worth of stuff and move to another location on Sunday night. Monday morning we went to S. W. Realty and met with a real smug jerk. He couldn't care less and when we asked for $$ back he claimed he didn't really know who owned the property and we could only get $$ from the owner. How can you rent property when you don't know who owns it?? Never again. On top of everything else--the mattress pad had old stains plus fresh blood! Both the Board of Health and Building Inspector should look into these people.

Upon arriving at our rental house, Colonel Bob's Cottage in Nags Head, on 6/3/18 around 10pm, we…read moresaw that the listing was misleading about a half bathroom and washer and dryer. These can only be accessed from outside the house which is inconvenient, and not how it seems on any of the provided information online. We even spoke with someone in the office about this when booking, and there was never any mention of this. When I called the company I was told that no one in their office would say something like that, and that I didn't know what I was talking about. Later that week we also discovered that the front load washing machine was so filled with mold that we had to take paper towels and gloves and dig out handfuls of mold and hair and who knows what else, to even attempt to wash our clothing that week. We came home with several articles of clothing ruined from stains from that washer. Upon further entry into the house, on the night we were checking in, we discovered several roaches. We arrived late, and I didn't even want to "check in". We searched for a hour or more for a 24hr emergency number to contact Cola Vaughan, to no avail. They make no effort to be available to you in case of emergency. I called the next morning and requested that they do something about this and was told that I don't know what I'm talking about. That there was absolutely not a roach infestation. That I am just seeing palmetto bugs not roaches. What they don't know is my family owns a pest control company, and has for over 30 years. The bugs that I killed several places in the house (including the cabinets with all of the dishes, the living room, and the bedrooms), are absolutely roaches. They are in fact American Roaches specifically. They are frequently called Palmetto bugs, but it is nothing more than a nickname for an American Cockroach. I asked to be transferred to another available rental property, and they refused to do that, even though the rental agreement states: "Agent agrees to provide the Premises in a fit and habitable condition. If at the time Tenant is to begin occupancy of the Premises, Agent cannot provide the Premises in a fit and habitable condition of substitute a reasonably comparable property in such condition, Agent shall refund to Tenant all payments made by Tenant." Fit and habitable does not mean living with roaches for a week, besides all the other problems we encountered. We have stayed in many other rental homes in OBX from Corolla, to Nags Head, and many places in between, and never had any trouble with roaches in any of our other rentals. So it isn't just this area as I was told. It's poor pest control. I asked for placement in a comparable house and was refused, even though it was available, because I searched their website and found a few that were still available for the week. I asked to cancel, or for a refund, and was refused. Basically, they got their money, so who cares what I deal with. They certainly didn't wan't to take a loss to correct their poor property. I was only offered, that they could send a pest control company out to spray the outside of the house. Which will do nothing for the roaches inside of the house. Roaches quickly multiply, and could easily be transported back to our home with us in our luggage, continuing this problem long after vacation. It is completely reasonable to ask to be placed in a home that isn't housing roaches. I was told that they were only inside because I left the door open, which is untrue. However, even with the door closed there is a large gap at the bottom of the door frame so anything could get in. The door frame on the front door has other damage near the lock. The frame is busted and pulling away near the lock. The third bedroom had a futon that we could not even use. Upon trying to sit down on it we discovered that it was broken and all of the screws on one side of it were stripped. It is literally held up between the end tables and the metal piece was laying on the floor. We could not sit on it, much less sleep on it. We had to get an air mattress and squeeze it into that room so we could sleep for the week. I wanted to be removed from this house and placed into one that didn't have these problems, or I want a refund so I can take my business elsewhere to a reputable, respectable company that actually values customers. I was treated poorly, and as if I was unintelligent. That is unacceptable behavior from any company.

There was dog hair all over the place, spiders alive and dead, open junction boxes with wires hanging out, half the railing is missing from the deck. The one bedroom showed a full and a twin get here and it was twins. The pool picture showed lounge chairs about 8 of them and there are none only 4 seating chairs and 1 is broke. I had to stay in a hotel the first night because it was so hot and they offered no assistance whatsoever. I will never rent from them again.

While we understand that emergencies happen, the way the situation was handled was completely unacceptable. The company simply told us they would issue a refund but offered little to no assistance in finding comparable accommodations. We were left scrambling to find a place to stay at the last minute during our vacation. The only alternative they offered was a significantly inferior property with fewer bedrooms, no pool (one of the main reasons we chose the original home), and overall much lower quality than what we had booked. It was not a comparable replacement by any reasonable standard. When a company cancels a reservation at the last minute, especially after guests have already arrived in town, they should take responsibility for helping secure equivalent accommodations--not leave customers to figure it out on their own. I understand that unexpected property issues can arise, but customer service is measured by how those situations are handled. Unfortunately, this experience caused unnecessary stress and disrupted the start of our vacation. I would think twice before booking with this company again.

This home in Currituck Club was dirty and had issues. This house had cobwebs with bugs in it. Shower heads had green mineral deposits and abundant of mold. There was other things that need to be deep clean but those was just examples. We arrived to a dirty pool I called to have it clean couple days later. Nobody came to clean the pool. We hade to watch videos on how the clean the floor of the pool. The toilet ran continuously in one bathroom. We had to turn it off. So we could not use that bathroom. Doors stuck in the house. Which made it hard to open and close the doir. The front door was very bad. Sometimes it would not lock. My husband had to body slam to door open, in which he sliced open his knuckle. The garage smelled old and musty. I did call and complain. I was given an option to have people come out to clean and fix stuff. So we have people in and out of the house for how long. My husband was still do some work there. And we brought our dog. So having people in and out for long period was not going to happen. Too much stress. The house should have been deep clean before rental season. I did call again about the doors to maintenance. Nobody called back. And yes the office was open.

Place was clean and stocked with cooking supplies and various items we needed. You do need to provide your own sheets and towels but that's fine. You are VERY close to two public beach access points, restaurants, bars and a short drive to all OBX has to offer! Water pressure in that shower was amazing :) We would highly recommend sea spray cottages to friends and family and hope to come back!

The cottage was clean, comfortable and has a fenced in yards for pet use. There are relatively few places that are pet friendly and accommodating but here they go out of their way for pet owners. I attempted to rent a house managed by Nags Head Realty and my rating reflects the false…read moreadvertising and dishonesty with which they post rental rates & fees on VRBO. Specifically, in discussions about a rental, we had reached an agreement on price and began to initiate payment, at which time the company tried to raise the rental rate with a 'mandatory' 10% ($75) 'booking fee' and another $45 fee for some sort of non-refundable rental insurance; neither was mentioned in the fees section of the VRBO site, and so both seemed completely arbitrary and out-of-the-blue. The VRBO sites for houses managed by this company specifically state rental rates per week, and below the quoted rates is written the words "Notes: Prices start at the following rates excluding taxes and *optional* extras." I expected taxes, of course, but the extra $120 charges were out of the blue and neither was optional nor negotiable, as per discussions with the company... so, a bad case of false advertising. If a company is going to say they'll charge one amount for a service then try to charge another amount, well that's dishonest and deserves to be reviewed accordingly. I suggest taking your business to other rental agencies in the area that don't try to weasel extra money out of the renter. It's worth mentioning, also, that this negative experience blew up a week-long rental of a house that will now likely sit vacant for this week, since it was a short-notice rental of a vacant property (move-in would have been today). So, they blew it for their client as well as the prospective renter (me).

We were not told of this restriction nor was it in the rental agreement. Outer Banks Blue offered up box fans as a resolution. Heat rises and at night 72 was pretty miserable, The manager refused to speak to us, we had to deal with a go between In the office. It took 3 calls to get the owner to allow a lower temperature at night and even then if you touched the thermostat to raise it even a degree it locked you out. The dryer in the house must be 25 years old and a lot ad of beach towels took 3 hours to dry. Called maintenance and their resolution was to tell us to do smaller loads. Just not very renter oriented. If you're an owner they're probably fine.

They stayed in touch via text and email, letting us know when the plumber was scheduled to come. Super responsive. Half way through our 3 week stay, they gave us the option of getting fresh linens delivered, which was super convenient. Someone maintained the hot tub on a regular basis without being intrusive. This company gave us the feeling that they had our back if anything went awry. We've rented beach houses (VA beach) for many years. The beach environment is very harsh. Rental homes can be in wildly different conditions depending (I think) on the owners and not the rental company. Sometimes a house is old and fraying around the edges, sometimes updated and sparkling. Sometimes renters leave the place a wreck and the cleaners barely have time to put it back in order. If an updated, newer place is important to you, let the rental company guide you to the right homes. P.S. Our house was spanking clean and in excellent condition. I believe the owners take pride in their home, which is well managed by Outer Banks Blue. Great house + great company = great vacation.
